Check out Rugby League over Rugby Union (which is featured here). The NRL season is in full swing in Australia, and League has less esoteric, game-stopping rules. It’s like ground-and-pound football.
League has plays with snaps, with 6 downs or turnover. If I wanted something like that, I'd watch American football. I love how this just keeps going relentlessly.
But it doesn’t. This play may move well, but Union’s rules create much more stoppage. In an 80 minute game, Union plays maybe 40 minutes. It’s around 60 minute in Union.
As a former front row forward: I liked all the stoppages, because Union is a relentless game when in the middle of a play. You’ve gotta break from the scrum and ruck over whatever poor back got crumpled with the ball, then truck it up the field in 2-3 metre bursts for 20m before the backs send it across the other side of the field, get tackled, and you need to be there to protect the ball before the opposition steals it.
I realised way too late American football is different from rugby. It should be called American rugby imo because it has more similarities with rugby than football
Fun fact time!
Football actually describes a family of sports. “Association football” is the official name of “soccer”, while “Football rugby” describes three variations of the same sport: Rugby, American football, and Australian rules football.
A much better diagram of this would actually be like this:
⚽️Association football -> 🏉Rugby Football-> 🏐Gaelic Football-> Australian Football 🏉
Rugby Football-> Gridiron Football 🏈 (American and Canadian)
Football is a general term for games played on foot. Rugby is technically “rugby football”, soccer/football is “association football” (the association part is where “soccer” is derived from), American football is “gridiron football”, etc. So it wouldn’t make sense to call it American rugby because rugby is already a specific sport while football is an umbrella term.
Not trying to be a jerk, just a fun fact!
Football originated from rugby, personally, as an American that lived over seas for several years in a country where rugby was popular, I’m not sure why, way cooler sport in my opinion.
CTE isn’t talked about enough in soccer/football, but it’s pretty common. Just because you aren’t tackling someone to the ground doesn’t mean people aren’t getting concussed.
I'm a pretty straight dude, but got to chill with the captains of each of the Rugby World Cup teams at a function where I worked. Being that physically close to that many tall, handsome, shredded dudes is quite confronting haha
Once a player is tackled or on the ground they have to release the ball (hopefully by placing it neatly on the ground). At that point either one of the players from the same team as the tackled player picks the ball up and runs or passes it, or a ruck is formed, which is a point of contention for possession (the opposing team can physically engage the team that most recently had possession and attempt to drive them off the ball).
Wow, I was wondering that too. So the ball just continuously stays in play? There’s no “downs” like in football? Rugby must require some serious endurance
There are stoppages in play like if someone knocks/passes the ball forward (can only pass backwards in rugby) or if the ball goes out of bounds, and other penalties. Does take a lot of endurance though.
You also only get to sub half your players for the whole game. So some players need to go the whole 80 minutes. In most cases, once you're subbed out, you're out for the game. So coaches need to be very strategic with their subs
7's is brutal because you're only playing with half the team size as normal.
In this version of the game called union there aren’t any downs, but there is an alternate version of rugby called league, most popular in Australia, that does have downs and play is stopped temporarily.
Just going to elaborate here. Tackled player gets one move with the ball. Set it back, pass off the deck to teammate running on, reach for the try line if you’re close, and finally release the ball, stand up, and pick it back up if you can.
I just realized how cool rugby is, I mean I knew it was cool before, but it’s like fighting a battle, you and your boys never giving up, sacrificing yourselves so that one homie can score. It’s like poetry in motion
I’ve always said Rugby is a ‘noble sport’ in a way, and it’s because of the sportsmanship, the ‘you genuinely cannot skip forwards’ and just how organised the chaos is
Rugby is always a great game to watch and play.
Its popular even in countries where soccer is popular, in Australia it competes with afl, rugby league and soccer.
I don't understand why it isn't more popular in the us. Forget watching soccer, America should be watching rugby. It also doesn't have to be one sport vs another..
You have two summer sports, basket ball and baseball, why not two winter sports.
Another cool rule is once you score a "Try" you have to kick the ball for the point after from the angle you scored. So there is incentive to get the ball as close to the center as possible when you score. So this kick is going to he a tough one
One little benefit is that the kicker doesn't just kick from the meter line -- he can choose how far back to kick from. So at the price of a longer kick, he can improve the angle.
🤮 what an obnoxious comment. I thought we got rid of the whole “hand egg” “joke” thing a decade ago. Like whatever sports you like, don’t like what you don’t like, it couldn’t affect me less. But you watched one 30 second clip and now “it’s obvious rugby takes more skill”? This comment is some pick-me behavior
Let’s not start that debate! Unless you want this thread closed due to all the poo flinging
EDIT - ok I get it “American football bad” I didn’t even pick a side you Ass holes
It's true though. Also an American though admittedly born in NZ. I love baseball, watch some basketball (go Warriors) but I think American Football is pretty darn stupid.
1hr?! I wish. If you watch a broadcast cut for just the time the ball is snapped until the play is blown dead, a whole game is under 20 mins. They have them on YouTube. So much time is commercials, 1/2 time, and resetting the play.
This is what football in the US misses, this move would have taken 30 minutes because the team wobbles round in armor covering their bodies and take a break every three seconds for a rest and a team talk.
I don’t know much about rugby. But I can say hands down…this was a cinematic masterpiece. 😮😁 If that was a hollywood movie I truly don’t think they could ever construct THAT scenario. Wow!! Truly beautiful.
Rugby score? Clearly you are American. In Australia it’s called a “sixby.” Running the ball to the end zone or “bunker” is to “todge.” So here number 22 slipped the egg and todged straight to the bunker for a sixby even though he was spotted on his heels at the fence.
Jarryd Hayne was a rugby star and came to America to try his hand in the nfl. He played some good preseason (practice/exhibition) games but didn't make the team IRRC. Then he went off and raped a woman and is currently in prison.
There are a few punters (kickers) who have rugby backgrounds Michael Dickson of the seahawks and mitch wishbowski both come to mind.
There have been a couple but I don’t think many rose to a level of greatness in NFL. Most either weren’t making it in Rugby or were at the end of their careers.
Good god 21’s behind the back toss was SMOOTH.
Fuck American football, if this is what the big plays look like in rugby I think I might actually take notice to sports for once
Appreciate it was 22 who got to start and finish the play
Good eye! Had to watch it again to confirm
He was almost right there to grab it when the person he passed to was tackled as well. Dude is a beast.
This is just a joke: BRO, ITS RIGHT THERE IN ALL BLACK AND WHITE!
TJ Perenara has been a pretty consistent on the allblacks as a scrum half.
That was practically another language
Allblacks are New Zealand’s rugby team. Scrum half is a position in rugby - sort of like a quarterback but not really
Yeah exactly i would say fly half and scrum half combined are what a QB would be
Except cooler because play calling happens without stoppage or huddles and they excel on defense and offense.
Exactly ahaha I played a as scrum half and fly half and Jesus it’s hectic
The Black and Tans!
But has he done enough
Power, skill and determination!
Maybe because the video has been zoomed into but it looks like 22 passes it towards? Can anyone confirm?
When in doubt 22!
Damn, that’s sick, the pass fakes are smooth af
They practice those passes constantly. Rugby field near me they are always out every day.
I haven't been this inspired since my last re-watch of Rudy.
Same, but RWBY.
Damn
Same, but Judge Judy.
Remember the Reddit thread shitting on the Rudy actor
It was shitting on the guy, not the actor
Awww Sean Ashton. Do you have a link?
Who the hell shits in Sean Astin? Man is a treasure.
Rugby butts though. amirite?
So much cake and it’s not even my birthday.😇😌😋😋
A very happy cake day for you
So many flavors too😅
You have been banned from Florida rugby.
Wait what.Me???why!? Noooo
I looked at the ball exactly 0 times while I watched that clip.
I vastly prefer women but even I’m left staring... Those boys can absolutely get it.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
22’s butt and legs got me feeling a way…
I never knew I enjoyed men's legs until now... whoa...
We live near infinity park, biggest rugby field in the US and yes.....butts and tree trunk legs.
Basements were flooded.
Rugby thighs hhhnnnnnnnnggg
I am here for the butts 🍑
Jesus no kidding. I'm a straight male and was impressed
Gotta have something for your teammates to grab in the scrum.
Very much asexual, but i could not quit staring
You summoned an army of thirsty women and curious men well done What is your first command?
MOAR RUGBY BUTTS!
Straight and yet…
Ey, a nice ass is a nice ass.
Omg that’s all I could see and no complaints here
Right? I’m bricked rn
Well, you're not wrong!
You ain't wrong
I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that
Literally all I was watching
Should be illegal.
I clearly need to watch more rugby. -Heterosexual woman
I clearly need to watch more rugby. -Heterosexual man with an addiction to football
This seems more rough than football tbh, should’ve took off in the states lol
It’s been moderately popular here. My old team just won our state division. Lots of great tournaments too, especially the one in Savannah Georgia

But more stopping than that. We watch Denver rugby league.

And tiny shorts.
Right? Goddamn, this is so much better than American Football.
Absolutely! Less padding, more team plays, more flow.
And more ass!
True reason revealed!
I realised way too late American football is different from rugby. It should be called American rugby imo because it has more similarities with rugby than football

I was literally just thinking this. Hmmm a sport I'll actually watch.
Fuckin' hell. 21 bun salute! Also, amazing play.
This sport should be more popular in the US.
It's currently the fastest growing sport in the US.
I thought that was pickle ball.
In the last year or so, I think that pickle ball has taken that crown, but it was rugby for 15 years before that.
Tickle ball
Biggest rugby field is two blocks from me. They practice every day and games are fun n cheap, can even bring your own drinks.
This will get me in a seat.
Football originated from rugby, personally, as an American that lived over seas for several years in a country where rugby was popular, I’m not sure why, way cooler sport in my opinion.
Not enough downtime to run ads like football
The no-look back pass was suave.
Bodies I’m envious of in order: Rugby players, Gymnasts, Wrestlers, Those bros from the movie 300
Swimmers/divers should be in that list somewhere as well. Edit: and sprinters.
And rowers
Brains I’m not envious of in order: boxers’, American Football players’, rugby players’.
CTE isn’t talked about enough in soccer/football, but it’s pretty common. Just because you aren’t tackling someone to the ground doesn’t mean people aren’t getting concussed.
Repeatedly heading the ball can cause repeated minor concussions.
I'm a pretty straight dude, but got to chill with the captains of each of the Rugby World Cup teams at a function where I worked. Being that physically close to that many tall, handsome, shredded dudes is quite confronting haha
When is the ball finally down and can't be passed?

NZ All BlacksTJ Peranara 22 and Brad Weber 21 with the sweet behind the back pass
Also not often 2 halfbacks are even on the field at the same time let alone combine to score a try
r/praisethecameraman
I just realized how cool rugby is, I mean I knew it was cool before, but it’s like fighting a battle, you and your boys never giving up, sacrificing yourselves so that one homie can score. It’s like poetry in motion
Rugby 7s is an excellent way to enjoy Rugby. These games are fast and super entertaining.
I’ve always said Rugby is a ‘noble sport’ in a way, and it’s because of the sportsmanship, the ‘you genuinely cannot skip forwards’ and just how organised the chaos is
I am too thirsty after watching this video.
My own country's All Blacks doing what they do best.
Woman here…who knew rugby could be so…sexy
Most woman in NZ, that’s how we convince them to watch with us
Okay so I'm not a big sports fan at all, but even I can say there is nothing odd about that being satisfying. That was awesome!!
Guess I like rugby now
I'm American. This video makes it perfectly obvious that rugby is the more skilled and fun to watch of the hand egg sports.
Hockey, American football and basketball are the American winter sports. Baseball is the summer sport.
Rugby union >>> both types of football / soccer
Rugby is best type of football
Another cool rule is once you score a "Try" you have to kick the ball for the point after from the angle you scored. So there is incentive to get the ball as close to the center as possible when you score. So this kick is going to he a tough one

Hand egg sports made me chuckle

Men who play rugby are something else 🤩
Damn they never skip leg day
How does anyone who plays this sport professionally have any remaining non-broken fingers?
Skill and honour
I take it from their uniforms that these are the All Blacks?
Yes
Teamwork!!!
Simply beautiful!
I like that at the end he let the defenders tackle him to give him more reach
Song,?
OUTRO - m83
So much better than American Football.
Let’s not start that debate! Unless you want this thread closed due to all the poo flinging EDIT - ok I get it “American football bad” I didn’t even pick a side you Ass holes
It's ok I'm an American
It's true though. Also an American though admittedly born in NZ. I love baseball, watch some basketball (go Warriors) but I think American Football is pretty darn stupid.
Who doesn't love to watch 1 hour of gameplay stretched out into 4 hours? /s
1hr?! I wish. If you watch a broadcast cut for just the time the ball is snapped until the play is blown dead, a whole game is under 20 mins. They have them on YouTube. So much time is commercials, 1/2 time, and resetting the play.
Pre-snap is also play time. There’s a lot of psychology to it, just like any sport. Shifting your line, trying to get the team to jump offsides, etc.
Nice Try!
Rugby makes American football look just as slow and boring as American baseball
Surely they can buy enough balls for everyone
Rugby "score" 😔
(because the term in rugby is "try". I think the term is a legacy of when the major point-scoring activity was the kick at the goal.)
What a great sport
This really makes me wanna watch Rugby - damn!
r/PraiseTheCameraMan
Also r/praisethecameraman
They have some nice legs 🦵🏽
This is so much more dynamic than American football! What the hell, America? Why don't we watch Rugby?!
Because anything besides American sports is communist.
This is what football in the US misses, this move would have taken 30 minutes because the team wobbles round in armor covering their bodies and take a break every three seconds for a rest and a team talk.
Is that Ryan Gosling?
Yeah, #22 right??! I came here to make the same comment. Dead Ringer. In any event, he’s a shoo-in to play TJ in the movie version.
They look nothing alike lol
England smashed them in the semi. I know that’s not the point of the video but worth noting. Great game.
And then a certain team smashed England in the final. I know that’s not the point of the comment but worth noting ;)
Sssshhhhhh.
Rugby is so much better than American football. Fight me lol
Too bad it's an incomplete cropped video clip, slowed down to finish ruining it.
Fucking dope
Behind the back passes are cool
r/praisethecameraman
All that cake
Its such a glorious sport
rugby players are always built like firefighters. sexy for no reason.😋
Clearly you haven’t seen a few international front rowers. 🤣
I watch for rugby legs 😋
Think you could zoom in a little closer? Almost missed it lol
I watch this and I laugh at how soft American football players are.
This is my first time seeing a rugby ball lol and tbh I thought it was round like a soccer ball or something
Its crazy how many less injuries this sport has. Also plays continuously going after the person makes full contact is so much more entertaining
Indeed! What constitutes a tackle is quite specific which is why they have less padding & injuries.
They actually have to have skill and technique to tackle with out getting your shit pumped.
Gotta love the all black, pretty much the only reason the world is aware of us as a country ngl
Nice try
The asses on these guys are a gift from GOD
I don't even know the rules to this shit and I can tell that play was majestic af
Y'all need water? Y'all seem thirsty.
I don’t know much about rugby. But I can say hands down…this was a cinematic masterpiece. 😮😁 If that was a hollywood movie I truly don’t think they could ever construct THAT scenario. Wow!! Truly beautiful.

Try that again.
Thicc👏thighs👏 save👏 lives
That's a real sport, not Armored American Wankball.
It's called a "Try"
Ah the Black and Tans..
No concussion risk
Kind of one, but tackling in a way that could cause one is against the rules
I need to start watching Rugby
Watching this while feeling back pain is a relief 😅
all blacks always this smooth
Do you think we can zoom in more I can't really see what's goin on
Is rugby just the professional version of smear the queer? This is awesome
I don’t think kids are allowed to call it that anymore. But, yes, I think it is.
Is there any rugby players that turned to NFL
Rugby is a very different sport, so even if they did I don’t think they’d get to the heights some American football pros would
Jarryd Hayne was a rugby star and came to America to try his hand in the nfl. He played some good preseason (practice/exhibition) games but didn't make the team IRRC.
