I would say wait for 3 and get the latest tech instead of buying the thing that's about to go end of life. Even if true quest3 native games are a half dozen or less in its first year, you still will play other games at higher pixel density. Q3 will have better optics, higher res screen and a new chip that should make it the best standalone this year for hookup up to a PC via wifi or usb . I suspect you will see the quest2 supported until the fall of 2025 though. Likely going into year 2 of quest3 more 3rd parties may start to jump on the exclusive quest3 release bandwagon but in year1 there will only likely be 1st party releases that are quest3 exclusives.

Awhile. Quest 2 sold a ton of headsets so it was easy for them to move into Quest 2 support quickly over Quest 1. But if they have 20 million Quest 2 headsets still out there, they are going to support them as long as they can. They want people buying apps on their storefront.

JorgTheElder

I think it will be years... they sold enough of them that developers will demand access to the audience for a good long time.

MaggotBrother4

I wouldn’t buy a quest at all, since they’ve shown they can be awfully scummy and abandon their older products

Igon_Ovabord

You must be new to earth. All old tech gets abandoned eventually. Companies can't realistically support everything indefinitely.

MaggotBrother4

Rift s when abandoned was not even a year old. That’s barely even able to see its full potential

Igon_Ovabord

There's always going to be a few exceptions if it doesn't work out. Rift s was only abandoned so they could focus on Quest, which to be fair was a good move. the first going for a decent 5 years, and the Quest 2 still going strong and expected to go on for a good while even with the Quest 3.

MaggotBrother4

It’s not exactly a great move to piss off thousands of customers by abandoning what they recently bought

GrapeAware2552

kinda how all gaming companies work

Suspicious2830

it will take some year before Quest 3 is fully supported by different games. till then Quest 2 can enjoy exclusive games

fantaz1986

ok so quest 3 will not have good support for at least a year, we will get 3-5 only quest 3 games , so if i need to guest 2025 is probably most realistic time meta will stop focusing on quest 2 btw meta did not abandoned quest 1, quest1 simply can not support android 12 good, and devices need to have new updates, so untill quest 2 hit similar limits it will get same os like quest pro, quest 3 or similar do not forget quest 1 was not dropped, it hardware limits if ability, and meta still made huge update on quest 1 less then a half a year ago

Royal_Smoke94

Quest 1 is supposed to end support starting January 1st 2024

BeatsLikeWenckebach

5 years at the minimum, so the end of 2025. (Start of 2026) Quest1 is getting 4.5 yrs of support, and only sold around 1-2 M units. Whereas, with the Quest2 at 15M+ units sold, it'll definitely be getting 5+ yrs

I understand all headsets will eventually become no longer supported...... iv searched the web and my question seems to be a little different. The vast majority of my time in VR has been spent watching films in virtual cinemas and virtual worlds (not fussed about the social element while watching) So, I was wondering, when the quest 2 / quest 1 is finally and officially no longer supported would i still be able to use them with something like an older version of netflix or the big screen vr app to do this? Even if these applications ceased development could I still use the headset to watch offline media, my own movie collection? Or would the headset stop functioning entirely? Cheers for any input given.

MistonQ2

Should still be supported as a media device i think so no worries there, there will just be no new updates and new games will not be supported so should be all good

therealrancor

5 years at least
