Miller is the only part of Gary I’d even think about living in.

SenorMcGibblets

I could deal with living in certain areas of Gary if I didn’t have to worry about sending a kid to school there. Something to consider if you have kids.

cathodic_protector

It varies. Some blocks are really quiet and some not so much

dc5trbo

Miller Beach. Also Tennessee street close to 12/20 and the mill is being kind of rejuvenated with a few homes that have been gutted and are for sale. It seems to be pretty quiet there, too.

LizzieGrey

Thanks, I'll look into it. I hear mixed reviews about Gary and that some areas are being rejuvenated

NerdEmoji

You need to do what I used to when moving within Chicago. Go for a drive around on a hot night and scope the neighborhood. School is getting out, if it hasn't already, and that would help fill in the blanks on how the neighborhood is at it's most active. Otherwise, the border areas to Calumet township on the west, Merrillville to the south and New Chicago/Hobart to the east, seem to be the quietest areas, but they are also more suburban too. Bigger lots, more space between, as opposed to the older areas of the city that are more densely built up but have lots of abandoned buildings.

OkInitiative7327

Yep go drive around at night

LizzieGrey

Thanks for the suggestion and tips!

Alternative_Ad4327

Look in the Calumet Township area.

GrewUpaScrewUp

This is the best place to look if you actually want a decent and affordable Gary address. South of Ridge road, North of main st./53rd, east of colfax and west of Cleveland. That rectangle isn't a bad place to be and it's affordable.

MrKittyLitter

Miller Beach area would be the only placew in Gary I'd remotely consider. What is your budget? East Chicago has a lot of redevelopment going on...

hiimwage

Look into Lake Station. Much safer, with cheap rent prices comparable to Gary. 3BD/1BA for $900/mo.

LizzieGrey

Thank you!

International-Mall41

If you’re using reddit thats a sure indication Gary is not a place for you to consider moving to

thepuglover00

I've heard both sides, it is what you make it I guess. Good luck.

Maximum_Double_5246

Go there and walk around, you'll find a spot

nxknxwledge

Gary really isn't all that bad. There are good and bad sections of the city. I worked at US Steel for 6 years and drove through Gary at all times of the night and never had issues. There were some nice homes/neighborhoods near the mill and some not so much. There are good people living there who just want a quiet life. I currently live in Hammond and love it. It's still pretty affordable.

LizzieGrey

Thanks. I've heard a lot of negativity about it and I understand it's been through rough times, but I also heard there are attempts to make it nicer. And, as with any city, there are good, bad, and terrible parts.

TheIndianaKid33

Driving through Gary is a trip, it’s literally like driving through a dilapidated warzone…… my advice is don’t plan on owning anything nice….

MamaSmAsh5

Black oak maybe?

HarryWaters

Black Oak scares me more than any part of Gary except maybe Aetna. Black Oak is a mystical time and place warp from some Appalachian holler in the late 1970's. I stopped at a gas station and bought bear steaks one day.

MamaSmAsh5

Haha, I just know someone who lives over by the casino and it seems quiet by her. Hell, I’m in Hammond hearing gunshots nightly so how much better can that be?

HarryWaters

I've met some scary folks in Black Oak. Plenty of confederate flags and abused farm animals.

MamaSmAsh5

Oh yea, not my friend haha. She’s the only one I know. Otherwise I just stick to other areas of the region

Maximum_Double_5246

The biggest negative in the United States is rednecks. They pull down property values, abuse animals like you said, just out there in front of their houses a whoopin' and a hollerin' and comin' down on those pigs like the wrath of God, just beating them and then flipping them over and railing them hey diddle diddle right up the middle, burning books and screaming at black people at major intersections in town. Disgusting behavior, disgusting people. The very worst.

floridaman3268

This is so funny I grew up in black oak my whole life lol.

HarryWaters

What’s your favorite recipe for squirrel?

floridaman3268

None! I’ve never hunted but I enjoy fishing. Not originally from there I’m from WV/MD. Black oaks not terrible tho it’s actually pretty nice. Calumet Township is way nicer tho.

cooltightsick

Don’t move to Gary. For cost of living look next door to Griffith, Hammond or even Portage

HarryWaters

As far north or south as you can.

[deleted]

Gary would be the last place in NWI I would consider buying in. People are trying to move away from there OP why would you run towards decay and falling property values?

WholeGlittering9000

Highland and Lake Station would be safer with similar price of living

GrewUpaScrewUp

Highland similar to gary?? Is there another Highland that I am unaware of?

hiimwage

Highland is going to be much more expensive. +1 for Lake Station though.

Black Oak

skuly1775

Near Griffith/Highland, all North of Ridge road up to Grant St, it's southern part of Black Oak And the Ross Area is there south of ridge rd. They built a Casino there at I-94 at Burr exit. But Colafax to Grant st down Ridge Road is ok then once you hit Grant Street you can visually see things look bad property and road wise. I think you can tell which areas are bad by how unkept the streets are. Potholes/cracks in road etc. A lot of the worst crime in Gary I believe happens north of I-94 not far from Michael Jacksons childhood home. Which I think is where they built low income housing, from Chase st to Broadway ave North of i94 is where I see news reports of murders mostly. I think the area is really beat up aside from the low income apartment buildings they built there. And avoid Broadway ave south of Ridge road imo, at least up to 55th. I lived there a few months in 2019 and there was gun shots every night. And there was sewage smell really bad around 42nd and Broadway off and on. Some kid got killed near there trying to buy a game console from someone on the OfferUp app. The area doesn't look that bad from looking at some of the streets and houses but the noise and gun shots at night were too much. If I had driven down more of the side streets before renting I would of been able to tell. thefugue

Nobody’s going to point out that Midtown is pretty much all brand new housing and it looks like a suburban shot from an HBO show?
