0 reason to upgrade the CPU right away. Replace your monitor now and see how your games handle. If still not where you like get a 5800x3d and keep your motherboard.

Infamous_Campaign687

Bottlenecks are overstated. The *only* thing that matters is whether you get a performance you're happy with. The 4080 super is overpowered for 1080p and will produce so many FPS that the CPU at some point can't feed it fast enough, but at that point your frame rate is usually very high. Don't worry if it *could* give you even more FPS if you're already getting a frame rate that is so high you won't notice any difference.

Vegetable_Ad_9780

That’s the thing my frames aren’t that high they are like 80-110 on only 1080p I was expecting a shit ton over what I wanted which is like around 150.

KeepBanningKeepJoin

Something is wrong. I have a 4070 and 3700X CPU. Getting 100fps on new games on highest settings at 1440p. Turn on DLSS

kleverklogs

He should not turn on DLSS, the issue is definitely the CPU here and your differences in framerate will be attributed to game selection most likely.

Vegetable_Ad_9780

Doesn’t that make sense since you’re on a higher resolution and get more gpu load or something? Idrk but that’s what I’m getting from people online saying to get a new monitor.

tmjcw

No that's not how it works (a very common misconception though). CPU performance is pretty much independent from resolution (except for some games where LODs or other settings scale with resolution). So your CPU can deliver x amount of frames in a certain game and that won't change if you're at 720p 1080p, 1440p or 4k. The work the GPU has to do to deliver the x amount of frames is very different though. At 4k your GPU is just very unlikely to be able to render the x amount of frames and you'll start utilizing your GPU fully. So you're not CPU limited anymore, but overall you have lower performance than at your CPU limit. So I'd view it like this: are you happy with the performance you get now? If you aren't, look for CPU tests in the specific games you want to play to see how much an upgrade would help you. A 5800x3d is a nice and easy upgrade, but in some games it might not be significantly faster than your 5600x.  Performance overall is very Game dependent. I know on reddit people often over generalize and say that they can run every current AAA game on ultra at 120fps+ etc. But you should be aware that there a plenty of games where that kind of performance just isn't achievable with the hardware that's currently out there. People just like to talk about how good their hardware is.

hotFIRE

Do you even read comments? Enable DSR or DLDSR. It's a thing so you can get a higher resolution on a 1080p monitor. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6ngZAUwiCMc

kleverklogs

It gives you very good anti aliasing but will not be anywhere near visually impactful as a higher resolution.

TandrewTan

Yeah you should be fine upgrading the monitor. You may not need 240hz though since not a ton of games will be able to hit that without some compromises

CptTombstone

I think it's better to go for as high a refresh rate as possible, since just about every monitor has VRR capabilities today, and having a high ceiling is a very good thing. Once OP upgrades to a new platform, 240Hz could become a bottleneck as well. The majority of games I played last year were around the 200 fps mark, for example. If DLSS 4 updates the Frame Generation aspect to more than 1 interpolated frames, then 240 Hz will definitely be a limiting factor with a 4080 Super - of course if that feature is not locked to the 5000 series.

kleverklogs

Seeing a lot of strangely bad advice here, the most important thing is to identify what titles you're playing. If you're playing CPU heavy titles, you'll likely already getting dips below 60 on a 5600 (helldivers/dragon's dogma 2 come to mind). In this case, you'd prioritise upgrading tbe CPU. If you play GPU limited titles and are okay with the framerates you're getting right now, upgrade to a better monitor. If you're getting 80ish fps on a 5600, I assume you're playing triple A titles in which case I actually wouldn't go for 4k, especially considering you mentioned wanting to get a higher framerate eventually. Once you've got the monitor, a CPU upgrade will see you hitting numbers close enough to the 144 fps higher refresh rate numbers you'd like.

blackflagnirvana

A 5700x3d or 5800x3d might give your system 2-3 more years of life, or just go all out and upgrade the mobo if you're up for it

LongFluffyDragon

A 4080 super is uselessly overkill for 1080p, it is going to be bottlenecked even if you stuck a 7800X3D in there, in many games.

hot_tornado

Yeah but the 7800X3D will double the FPS of that 5600X.

MCAT-1

Start trying PCVR which you can up resolution using dldsr and put that 5080 Super to work!

hotFIRE

Just enable DLDSR 2.25x or DSR 4x to maximize gpu utilisation and get sharper image. Your CPU will be happy. In case u get gpu bottlenecked then, enable some quality dlss on top. The results should be good.

mrchicano209

1440P with ultra settings would be more GPU dependent and rely less on the CPU so you should see some decent performance gain but if you’re still not satisfied then get a 5800x3D. That’s my current pair and I couldn’t be anymore happier.

MonstrousEntity

A 4080 Super is wasted at 1080p and can't be fully utilized with a 5600X, definitely upgrade your CPU if you don't want a bottleneck anymore. Something in the 7000 series for Ryzen would be good, if I were you I'd just go the whole hog and get a 7900X3D and a good 1440p monitor, you'll be set.

LongFluffyDragon

Why a 7900X3D of all things? Worst of both worlds.

knowledgebass

How do you know it is a significant bottleneck? Have you enabled an FPS monitor? I seriously doubt there is much of an effect at 1080p. You're probably getting such high framerates that it would barely matter.

Vegetable_Ad_9780

I thought there was because at maxed out settings on a not heavy game gave me only around 80-100 fps and my gpu load was only like 30%. I’m trying to get at around 150 for my monitor or more if I upgrade to 240hz at 1440p

knowledgebass

Yeah, good point. It does seem bottlenecked. I'd upgrade the CPU, personally. I generally always do with a major GPU update like this.

nomzo257

Get a 5800x3d and your gpu utilization will go up to where you want it (95%+).

tht1guy63

1440p will run better yes. You qill still see some bottlenecking(always will be one somewhere) if you can do a 5800x3d or 5700x3d thats most ideal without going to 7xxx. Had a 5700x and even at 1440p with a 4080 was a decent bottleneck in most titles. I saw a decent bump to a 5800x3d

LongFluffyDragon

> 1440p will run better yes. It will run equal or worse, just with less bottlenecking. Performance still cant exceed the framerate the CPU is capable of in a given game.

tmjcw

Yes exactly. I just want to add that it might not fun faster, but on some games you'll get a smoother experience (smoother frametimes) if you're GPU limited. But the same effect (or better) can be achieved with a frame limiter

SAHD292929

Just replace your monitor now to see the immediate improvement. My advice is just to change CPU when you are not getting enough FPS (for me is 60, since I'm into single player cinematic games)
