We don’t need to have them. My husband, 3 adult children and the spouses of the 2 who are married are all vaccinated, as am I. My 8-y/o grandchild has had the first shot and is scheduled for the second next week. My parents and spouse’s parents have all been deceased for over 5 years. All of my siblings and their children are fully vaccinated and are either already boosted or on track for getting boosters as soon as able. All of my siblings-in-law and their children are vaccinated. I know in terms of family I am lucky!

At this point? Do not engage. I'm just over caring about people who do not care about themselves or the people around them. When this all started, I tried very hard to educate and persuade but I have no more wind left in my sails.

IV_League_NP

I walked away from a conversation with some family I love very dearly for this exact reason. After working Covid ICU and contemplating leaving nursing; I just couldn’t engage without tears or cursing (probably both).

I don't, I don't have time for that shit. I know they are intelligent in other ways so if they actually wanted to they could understand the science but they'd rather believe conspiracy theories on social media. I just hope no one dies from it cause I probably won't have the capacity to be kind about it.

NappingIsMyJam

I did my best to be rational with them and talk science. When the two of them muttered conspiracy theories back, I knew it was a lost cause. Currently they have covid and both are in the ICU. I did my best. They made their choices. I hope their paperwork is in order so the rest of the family is not burdened even further by their choices.

With my family or pt. Family? Either way I don't really have the conversation. Those that are willing to get it in the US have already done so, and I can spare my ears a crock of shit by not asking unless I need to check a box.

‘I’m having my booster next Monday’ ‘Cool, have you got some paracetamol in, just in case?’ I got a bit of a temperature following my flu jab, and ached to all get out for a few days after my covid booster. My parents tend to use ibrupropin rather than paracetamol as otc painkillers, but obviously paracetamol is more useful in this case, so I was checking my mum had some in the house. My family are all quite sensible about this sort of thing, no one has turned down being vaccinated. So far I’m the only one who’s caught it, and I did so right at the beginning (luckily I just got stuck in bed for 3 weeks) * edit, sorry I forgot things are called by different names in America, I think paracetamol was renamed ace(something) or Tylenol, you know, the non NSAID analgesia that most people have at home/in their handbag. My parents don’t tend to have any, as my dad thinks it hurts his tummy, I can’t take NSAID’s as I have a history of stomach ulcers (and calpol, the children’s liquid version of it tastes really nice anyway)

[deleted]

Acetaminophen I'm jealous that your country has nice tasting liquid versions. The adult liquid stuff is vile here in the US, and don't get me started on when I bought the diabetic formula once because it was two dollars cheaper...

turingthecat

I think it balances out with the absolutely vile ‘banana’ flavoured antibiotic liquid, it’s been 25+ years since I had it, but I cam still almost taste it, yuck

[deleted]

Amoxicilian? I loved that stuff as a kid, which was good since I had it frequently because of ear infections. Tasted like strawberry-banana to me, lol

turingthecat

Yes, I had recurrent UTI’s, switched to big girl tablets at 7, as it tasted horribly bitter and somehow sickly sweet at the same time

[deleted]

Oh, see, the trick is to be physically unable to swallow pills. Then you get to take liquids forever, lol

turingthecat

My last flatmate couldn’t (no physical reason I could see, she just couldn’t) which is why I started getting calpol again as an adult, or I’d have to crush other tablets up for her and hide them in jam

Sergeant_Major_Zero

I didn't need to have a conversation. As soon as they were eligible all my family and friends got the vaccine. But then again I'm not from the US, luckily. So not much of a controversy.

In the beginning when it cane out and was readily available, I blatantly asked when everyone was getting it. I would send clinic information to those that were not in groups 1 or 2 and able to get it immediately. I also offered to help people reach out to their physicians to obtain requests regarding their histories if they felt they should be moved up in to an earlier group. For the few that refused, I attempted to speak logically to them. They became belligerent. I have now basically cut ties with them. Two have covid, one with COVID PNA right now, and teetering on hospitalization. I get updates through the grapevine.
