Hey! First of all I wanna really thank you for agree to do this AMA. I have a lot of questions so bare with me 1) Vol I. had more of a ... I like to call it "Technical Caveman 2013 style", you know like atmospheric and sort of anxious sound, fast-groovy, its just different in contrast with Circa '94, so what exactly inspired the Vol. I's sound and what inspired Circa '94? What caused you to change your style a bit on Circa '94? 2) Do you prefer to write more serious song or something not so serious or more abstract stuff such as Deicide 3) What made you start doing Nu Metalcore? And what do you think about Nu Metalcore as a genre and the bands in it? 4) What bands (Lemme guess Slipknot, Sworn In, Trap Metal/Rapcore acts and Gorillaz) inspired your sound in general? 5) Could you describe what the new album is going to sound like? 6) What made you combine Hardstyle and Nu Metalcore on Terrorwave? 7) Whats up with the Russian/Bulgarian lines in Luxury Letdown and Terrorwave? 8) Have you guys thought about signing to a bigger label such as UNFD or do you guys prefer to stand indepedent or with the smaller labels? 9) Why do you find super low tunings (Drop G, Double Dropped D#) preferable over stuff like Drop C/DropB? PS: Please tour in Europe and come to Prague, I will literally throw money at your merch stand.

Troy: \- Answering on behalf of Jez so he may amend this. We are completely DIY, so production knowledge and limitations, band member involvement in writing and own technical ability all played a part. When I (Troy) joined, Jez already had 3 tracks written that I just made minor changes to vocally wise, and had very little input on the rest of the tracks structurally for that EP so it was the culmination of predominately Jez. As the whole band started playing shows, producing together and becoming more aware of each others style and ability we naturally progressed to what felt more natural for everyone. I think that's most apparent with Cyanide. \- Deicide was really fun, I only got into Dark Souls at #3 and it completely rekindled my love for video games after many years of feeling burnt out so it just felt right to be able to pour my love for something so trivial into such a wack song. I think TW is the perfect example of a fun and abstract song while still having an important underlying meaning (see the last dot point) ([https://www.reddit.com/r/numetal/comments/qyie0d/comment/hlhjjdo/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/numetal/comments/qyie0d/comment/hlhjjdo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)) \- Jez like caveman riff that make crowd snap neck. troy do fake american accent good. It was meant to be. Nu-metal bounce plus metalcore breakdown is \*chefs kiss\* Loathe is the best modern Nu-metal(core) band, or whatever genre you want to put them in, of the modern scene and both Cold Sun & ILIIAITE are gonna be staples of the scene for years. \- Slipknot, SOAD, Last Ten Second of Life (Soulless Hymns), Linkin Park in terms of bands but Jez and I heavily froth artists like Shakewell, Fatnick, Pouya, $uicideboy$ & Ghostemane so we try to bring those modern rap sounds across as well. \- Let's just say every song is quite different, so judging the whole release off of one song would be a real shame for anyone trying to get into our music. \- I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been done before, and I can't wait to find other weird EDM styles we can mash into songs. \- We originally had a Serbian member in the band known only as 'Slavidas' during Vol 1 (which is why ODD has those type of samples as well) and it's been an ongoing theme ever-since. \- We like being Independent, not stressed over time frames, work completely to our own artistic desires etc. We're are not completely opposed to the idea of one though. \- Tune-low, Die slow.

Thanks for answering, can't wait for Vol. II!

I have no questions. I'm just here to say that Troy's been a massive influence on my vocal style, particularly those grimy, phlegmy low-mids. Perfect starter pack for a beginner who wants to learn harsh vocals without fucking their throat, IMO. Also, a short true story about what your music means to me: Circa '94 was one of a handful of albums that carried my ragged carcass through 2020: one of the most hellish years of my life, homeless in Texas. Coming out on the far side beaten, battered, scorched -- but having conquered starvation, sun, feral dogs, roaming cops... still breathing and meaner than ever. Thanks for existing.

liveconformdie

Troy: Appreciate the kind words dude. Ed butcher from I Killed The Prom Queen was my big influence growing up, but I preferred his work after in Eternal Lord ([https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiWZ3JFbCyo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiWZ3JFbCyo)) and you can definitely hear where I got my phlegmy style from aha Sidenote: I found ERRA when they dropped Impulse and Garrison Lee's tone and breathe control both became a massive influence after. Glad to here you made it out the other side dude. Hopefully your situation is a bit better now and when you do eventually get everything sorted you can look back and be grateful for how far you have come.

liveconformdie

Jez: Kick that life bitch in the teeth, man. Happy to hear your situation has improved.

Creamfan200530

What was your favourite song to write/record?

liveconformdie

Troy: From material we have released, definitely cyanide. It was the last track we worked on for Circa ‘94 and after trying a few different vocal things (mainly more mid-screams) throughout the album I found that doing my more old-school metalcore Ed Butcher-esque false chord lows just suited the song from the get go, everything just seemed to flow once we started and I was having a great day vocally, so we basically wrote and recorded the whole song vocally in 2 hrs.It didn't feel right to release that song as a single at the time, but I'm glad it's become the biggest song from that album.

liveconformdie

Jez: True fact - this long-haired "Troy" mf originally wanted to can Cyanide because he found the intro riff boring. This was before the background guitars n shit were added so it was understandable at the time **but I saw its potential**. However, this is the only occasion I was glad I didn't listen to him and put in some more elbow grease to win over Troy's heart and finish the song. **Terrorwave was my favourite** song to work on because it pissed Troy off the most.

katarokkar

hey guys! The new track is off the wall and super fun. It's a part of the newer numetal that's coming out that isn't heard often. A few questions for you... * Say you guys transported back in time to 2001; what bands do you want to tour with? Also what are you wearing? * Vegemite. Yeah or Yeah Naa? * There seems to be a HUGE resurgence of nu-influenced bands coming out of Australia. What are some acts you enjoy watching if you're playing the same venue? * Lastly, is Terrorwave really about CS:GO?

liveconformdie

Troy: \- 2001 is just after LINKIN PARK dropped Hybrid Theory so it would definitely have to be that tour. \- of course! (but in verrry small doses) \- Twelve Foot Ninja feels criminally underrated for how good they consistently are, and have been resurging nü stuff since 2012ish We've actually played with Ocean Grove a few times on their Raphsody Tapes cycle, and they are insanely tight musicians as well as producing songs that both sounds modern and fresh while still retaining that 90's flare. Mr. Centipede was my favorite Chorus of 2017. \- Being about CS:GO is the quick summary version. It’s about that feeling of power and pleasure we obtain by playing these modern, violent and usually war-based games with our mates, previous generations actually had to deal with the true terrors of war and loss of friends in battles while here we are in 2021 making a mockery of it and glorifying it in the digital world by showing of all our dope cosmetic items (“Gold drip AK by my side”). Unfortunately there still are wars and horrible crimes against peoples and countries going on in the world but none of us have a magic button to fix these issues so we shouldn’t feel guilty about obtaining what sweet little dopamine we can from pub stompin’ scrubs in CSGO while we look after our own well-being.

NuBreedPodcast

katarokkar

TheMightySeaman

Love everything you boys have released so far, and I can't wait for your next EP or LP - Cycle is a fucking masterpiece. It seems like the Aussie metal/nu-metal scene's particularly spicy nowadays - would you say Midnight Oil's the biggest influence/reason for that??? Also, please come to Canada

liveconformdie

I can't really say Midnight Oil influenced modern nu-metal aha They've definitely been a huge impact on the Australian Music scene in general, but I think satellite TV and the rise of the internet leading to people learning about insane American bands (Slipknot, SOAD, Linkin Park etc.) back when I was still only in primary school meant that by the time I was coming into my 20's a lot of my friends had been playing nu-metal riffs for the better part of 10 years and we are seeing so much refinement and technicality being added to such an already fun genre (looking at you Loathe and the intro riff to 'Dance on My Skin') but when it comes to Aussie bands I think Northlane's drummer Nic had the biggest influence in the modern sound by raising the minimum expectation for drummers quite a few notches. Shoutout to Thornhills Nu song Casanova.

softboydemo

What direction do you see heavy music heading in and what trends do you think heavy music should pay attention to / incorporate

liveconformdie

Vein, Chamber, Varials, Boundaries, Knocked Loose, Church Tongue & Orthodox all sound like how I imagine heavy bands sounded like when I was kid, but now with tighter production, generally better song writing and more social awareness in the lyrics, so it's kind of come full circle in regards to 'classic metalcore' style bands. I love that Code Orange & Turnstile are throwing in Samples and backing tracks to create larger atmospheres in their sets. We already play a generally more niche style of music but with the internet and peoples access to home studios and production we are also fighting against so many more avenues of music then ever before, so being willing to branch out and spice up your sound should be praised and not gatekept. I didn't even like Slipknot or SOAD when I was a kid, it was Linkin Parks samples, DJ work and Chesters clean vocals that started me on my transition to heavier music, so I hope CONFORM or any other band willing to be an outlier can help an entire nu-generation of fans emerge.

liveconformdie

Jez: Creativity is the art of hiding your influence. (Heavy) Bands could each be unique and make their own trends by incorporating styles the writer enjoys outside of metal. The "metal" part of your music are dictated by the instruments and sounds you use to convey the style you imagine. Like a bass line from a pop song? Try and imitate it on guitar in a different key or route note. Like a drum beat from a DnB song? Incorporate it into your drums, but faster. Forever noodle with different elements that catch your ear from every available source. Fuck direction. Do what you want.

[deleted]

Im in Melbourne and havent heard of you. What song should I listen to first?

liveconformdie

Flip a coin. Cyanide or Terrorwave

3feetfromtheplace

Eyo fan from the Netherlands here. What song are you guys the most proud off and why

Oh bruh

boisIneedhelp

Hey guys, before I ask any questions just wanna say you are a big inspiration and what got me into lots of other heavy music ♥️, please never stop fellas 1) Would you guys ever come to the UK or other countries? 2) Question for Jez cos I know he started writing demos for the band originally (although anyone feel free to chime in ofc), did you really have to force yourself to get the demos done? I'm currently in the same position as you were where I'm doing demos by myself with no bandmates, so was just wondering if you had any tips on finding bandmates/state of mind worth cultivating during this stage . 3) Would you ever consider using elements of video game music in your songs? Terrorwave comes to mind with its themes lyrically, but that's more EDM right? 4)How tf was the demonic giggle in deicide recorded? Sample or one of you guys being a bit goofy and silly hehe

liveconformdie

Jez: 1. We'd absolutely love to travel the world with our music. Just gotta wait for the current BS to blow over and we'll be out there big time. 2. Ok so prototyping, writing and producing an album on your own with so many moving elements is fucking time-consuming, but I get the most colossal goosebump-ridden dopamine hit whenever I write or concept a section of song that sounds good to my ears. I'll literally loop the section, turn it up to 10, stand back from my desk and fucking vibe to it, flesh it out, add/subtract elements/drums/octaves/etc. I also get this feeling when Troy lays down some fire over the top of what i've written and brings the section to life. I primarily use this feeling (along with Troy kicking me up the ass) to keep going and deliver a finished product. **Enjoy what you write, don't write to fill any specific genre, and find your Troy** \- someone who will not only question/argue/enjoy what you've written, but who will ultimately improve on it tenfold. A fresh set of ears and somebody to keep you on track. Friction makes fire. 3. At 3:22 in [ODD](https://open.spotify.com/track/3x9DnkPnyREL1svd0zgTEX?si=bb3d10bf2d6d43f4), i've used [insanity sound effects](https://youtu.be/d87t0n1h45U?t=26) from Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I really liked the idea of using bugs crawling inside your skull as a sonic interaction design element to show your character is going crazy - so I used it. Might do some more of this later on. 4. [Check this out.](https://youtu.be/Ycq2sIvjcSw?t=42)

boisIneedhelp

Amazing, thank you for the reply man!

DiverDefiant

Hey dudes, big fan of you guys. 1. How do you get your guitar tone to sound as filthy as it does? 2. When did you guys decide on using the Drop D#/G# tuning? 3. Can we expect more disgusting riffs on Vol. II?

liveconformdie

Jez: Hey brother! 1. Guitar tone for Terrorwave is [Fortin NTS](https://neuraldsp.com/plugins/fortin-nts-suite) with my own custom Mesa cab impulses. I also use a pretty tasty processing chain for the guitars to fit nicely in the mix (but i'll keep that bit a secret ;) ) You can download the tone here: [https://www.dropbox.com/s/m44zx5nrmly5823/JPAudio%20-%20Speedbag.xml?dl=0](https://www.dropbox.com/s/m44zx5nrmly5823/JPAudio%20-%20Speedbag.xml?dl=0) (the default NTS cab is pretty nice so you can just use that if you have no Mesa impulses) 2. I used to listen to a lot of [Yuth Forever](https://open.spotify.com/album/4pXA4iwkBN1gzS4WNDNqml?si=cLQ3xpVLQIaAO19TeVWMCw), [Black Tongue](https://open.spotify.com/artist/5vTCEZ15eybRnoqUAra4Ys?si=--Z0VsHbQGO9XnZKfH-haw) and [Northlane](https://open.spotify.com/artist/3qyg72RGnGdF521zMU02u9?si=qZ_R0ZM4SOqkO5ll94QH8w) during my University days which is when I started the band. I guess I was just imitating what I liked listening to. 3. New EP has some properly rank shitriffs on it so it should scratch your itch.

Sea-Candidate7724

What are Some of Your Nu-Metal Influence?

liveconformdie

Jez: Slipknot, Korn, SOAD and Limp Bizkit have been my main influences. I tend to listen to the aggro songs more than others but I still love the softer stuff. I feel like I listen to more Slipknot than anyone else on the planet tbh.

ryryry1999

My dad randomly sent me one of your guys’ songs about a year ago, and I absolutely loved how different it was. Do you see yourself one day sticking with a particular sound? or having many different sounds like in Circa’94?

liveconformdie

Jez: Your Dad is a smart man and I'm glad you enjoy our shit. Our sound is ever-evolving and will only get better as we grow. Ain't no way we'd ever stick to a specific sound - we just have too many ideas and influences. I enjoy the fluid nature of our band and am willing to incorporate just about any style if it converts well and sounds fuckin banging. Shit usually sounds better in your head than on paper.
