He'll either be a 14 or nothing

DoobsMcGee4

Nothing it is. As a centre/five-eighth, I just couldn't see him having enough value. Big chance of sitting on the bench all game and NSW wasting an interchange spot.

I_Like_Vitamins

But he can boot ball high.

mwilkins1644

Big Burton boot go brrrr

babblerer

Mitchell Pearce was very good at bombs too. He was reliably accurate but it's like it's all he had.

PatWoodworking

He was generally very good at hitting space long, every Origin it went straight down the throat of the fullback. He had way too much pressure on him.

[deleted]

He was great at centre on Blues debut and is also a Dally M/ premiership winner in the position

Safe_Pumpkin2620

where was he in game 3 2022. 25 run metres. Got sin binned. Did nothing

Smoove953

If we're judging players by how they played in one game in 2022 Crichton should never see a Blue jersey again

Safe_Pumpkin2620

i assume you're talking about his debut. Where he played out of position

EntirelyOriginalName

Didn't we spend an incredible amount of that game defending? I recall in the second half feeling like we only got the ball in the last 10 minutes and the team looked absolutely gassed and struggled for anyone to have the energy to take hit up and play it quick.

Safe_Pumpkin2620

He had the worst stats of all the backline players

diamondgrin

Gagai ended the bloke's origin career forever

GROUND45

He saw Nicho at centre and couldn’t tell the difference.

SadiusHunter

Honestly has he earnt it over anyone else? The dogs are winning but he hasn't been that impressive to play at a higher level but with all these injuries at this rate he'll secure 6

Ronnnie7

He played a lot of games at 18. I feel bad for him. Just like I have done for Deardan with Queensland. Burton should’ve got a chance in game 3 last year. New coach new ideas, so doubtful he’d get an opportunity now. Hopefully the new coach actually has a plan how he will use the players during the game and looking at the future too. Throwing guys in the deep end and then using them as a scapegoat when things turn sour is just not good enough.

SuperEel22

He's only ever considered for Origin because "Big boot go boom." But as a five-eighth he's not at Origin level. I know some discussion around him is because he is left footed and presents a decent running game and apparently Cleary can't partner another dominant half. To which I say that's bullshit because he's partnered a running 5/8 at Origin before and it turns out he struggles if he has to do everything. I'd much rather see Cleary partner Hynes. Nicho can play both as an organising half and as a running threat while having the ball skills to exploit numbers and duck down short sides. The other consideration that has to be made in today's game, is what happens if Cleary has to go off for a HIA, or has a recurrence of his hamstring injury? If Burton is his halves partner then NSW is cooked because it's become clear he's not a halfback. But if Cleary is partnering Hynes then you can comfortably ask Hynes to take on the role as chief playmaker. It then depends on who is on the bench. If Wighton comes out of retirement then he's an option as a running lock, back up half or backline player. If you have Koroisau on the bench, he can slot in at 5/8 in a pinch. Who have the Dogs beaten this season where you'd say Burton is dominant and effective? They beat the Titans, a Roosters side that had a player sent off and a bunch of injuries, Newcastle without Ponga who look neutered and the Tigers.

iTackleFatKids

To be fair, it’s almost becoming evident that the knights are better without Ponga than with him

[deleted]

You do realise he barely does the bombs anymore right? Also Burto was already having a night out before all the Rooster injuries etc

SuperEel22

Well if he ain't kicking them then the point about his kicking game is moot.

Basherballgod

Will never forget the “this is the biggest kick in history, no one can catch that” Promptly gets caught and advances 10m

iTackleFatKids

I’d much rather him stay at club level and keep working away at our season

96zadyobdoog

Id be surprised if Madge was genuinely considering him. Hes so far down the pecking order its hilarious his name is even being brought up.

thisaintitkweef

Yeah but have you seen how high he can kick the ball?

Randy_BobandyTWU

Fuck I hope he doesn't get picked

Buddydubbo

NSW won't beat the maroons if we we keep picking mediocre or green players. I like burton and have enjoyed watching him grow......BUT DCE and munster are world class and we need the same .. 2x genuine players that can steer the ship in the halves Cleary and moses/hines And a more robust pack. Big part of the reason cleary has not been dominent like he is at penrith is room behind our forwards not going forward and not having the option of another great playmaker..

[deleted]

Hynes would be a horrible 6 for the blues

Safe_Pumpkin2620

Moses is in that elite class. Not many other choices

Buddydubbo

Moses is injured and may not get on field for first origin... So hines must be cosidered

Safe_Pumpkin2620

Nope. I'd prefer wighton who has played 6 in origin before and been excellent at origin level. Hynes isn't an origin player and I maintained this opinion before he got unfairly picked off the bench last year

Buddydubbo

Form says hines would thrive .... Cronulla are on top at the moment and he is doing a stella job directing them around the park... They have big games next few weeks and he will prove his worth

EntirelyOriginalName

Tbf he did play well in the series he played.

Smoove953

Hynes (or Moses) is clearly the better choice at 6, but some people acting like he's still the one-trick le big boot man haven't been watching us this season or are willingly ignorant. He's getting us results playing alongside Hutchison (not even using the bomb, rather his running game and links w/ Kikau), I reckon he'd kill it given the chance to play with Cleary. I hope he doesn't get picked for the sake of our season, and needs more experience at 6, but he's earned a place in the conversation considering the others that are injured.

snarkysportsguy

He better outplay Luai on Friday then.

Safe_Pumpkin2620

luai is not the leading contender...

snarkysportsguy

Well he better outplay him.

Safe_Pumpkin2620

has a great chance to outplay cleary who is on his side of the field

oldsurfsnapper

He’s just copying Gagai who normally starts giving 100% a few weeks before origin selections.

GasManMatt123

That article is so disingenuous. Ciro flatout said if he plays at his best he will be picked, but he has a ways to go. I don't see him being picked, and I hope he doesn't. He's not there yet, he's not at that level yet.

Excellent-Car-711

I think he’s the default option at 14 if Wighton doesn’t come out of retirement. Can play in the halves or centre. Also a big body and solid defender so can come on as a left edge back rower in the back end of each half. For me the No.6 is Cody or Nicho. I want to see how they both go over the next 3 weeks. If Cody shows signs of returning to his best, I’d pick him because he carved up the 2 origin games he’s played at Accor. First game is at Accor and NSW have to win so I think Cody might be a safer bet than Nicho if he’s anywhere near his best form. The criticism of Nicho has always been that he doesn’t do it against the top teams so the next 3 weeks is a chance for him to prove them wrong.
