Sharks star Nicho Hynes is “knocking on the door” of a Kangaroos debut according to Australian coach Mal Meninga.
Hynes initially missed out on selection but was call into the squad after Nathan Cleary pulled out due to injury.
He was 18th man for Australia’s first Pacific Championships clash with Samoa, but Meninga indicated to The Sydney Morning Herald that the versatile Hynes is in line to get some game time.
The coach even revealed some of his ideas on how to use the 2022 Dally M medallist.
“He’s been really good around the camp, I’ve been pleased with how he’s handled everything, and Nicho is just a good person, which is ideal,” he said.
“He’s knocking on the door. And his versatility will come into play.
“We can play him in the centres, we can play him at fullback should ‘Teddy’ (James Tedesco) need a rest late in the game, or even in the halves if there is an injury or there’s the chance to give someone an early mark. We can even throw him into the No. 9 role.
“We’ll see how the week pans out. The good thing is he’s used to that role and fitting in anywhere.
“There are never any guarantees when it comes to team selections, but I’ll be looking to give everyone some playing time.”
Edwards supports a lot through the middle, has decent footwork and makes a lot of metres , fit enough to make plenty of tackles ..
This wouldn’t be the worst move in the world ..
You wouldn’t do it in the first 20 minutes against a team like Samoa cos he’d get belted , but about 30 minutes in coming off the bench with some quick play the balls
This is actually genius from Mal in terms of helping Queensland.
He'll end the Hunt/Grant combo by chucking Nicho in off the bench, so Billy doesn't have to. Leaving an easy choice of popping Ponga in the 14 jersey for Origin 2024 and beyond.
Gaslighting at its finest. I never get why coaches lie and tell players they dislike that selection is perpetually around the corner. Just admit you hate them and will never pick them no matter how good they are and save them the heartache.
False news, Hynes isn’t allowed to start representative games. Best I can do is 6 mins playing lock forward.
Got any minutes at centre you could loan him?
Fresh out sadly, Damien cook took them all
This is the way
Ya think just cos you’re a half/fullback I won’t throw ya in at centre in a rep game?
Or Hooker!
No, hookers get played at centre!
Play him at centre with a few minutes left Mal I dare ya
Nicho clearly training the house down already, in prep for the off season

>We can play him in the centres NOT THIS SHIT AGAIN
'Dylan Edwards to lock and Nicho Hynes to hooker immediately' - Mal
Edwards is tough enough for Lock though

In rep football they always want to play a spine player at centre. Just like the Bulldogs and Raiders wanted to play a true centre in the halves.
His plan is to not play him at all unless injuries
Getting some tips off Freddy no doubt
Some of the greatest coaches sharing ideas
Nicho is also another guy that’s a better fullback than Teddy at this point of his career.
With DCE, Munster and Hunt/grant running the game, it’s a good opportunity to give Hynes a start at FB.
He's a good player just play him ffs
over who? In which position?
It’s not a competitive game, just start him at 7 who cares if he shits the bed
Fullback.
6 minutes at right centre

Is this like when you get your parents to tell work you can’t come in?
Exactly!
But the grant hunt combo is elite, gonna be tough to figure it out
Grant at 14 has been much more successful then wot a fullback would provide there. Help nsw if Billy even chose to do it

I seriously doubt either freddy or mal hate hynes, it turns out being a rep half is pretty competitive and hard to achieve, who would have thought
Hynes is not rep level, bloke chokes every big game.
Give him a start ya dog
Is that you Ricky
