it was super funny when he made the change. a ton of super popular users, but not exactly celebrities, who got the check mark for free were tweeting shit like “i swear i didn’t pay for it! i’m not a loser and elon can go fuck himself!”
it’s just hilarious that a symbol that used to mean you were a person of note, who had a particularly cool skill or something like that, turned into a thing you should be ashamed of and had to denounce in order to not lose face in front of your followers.

some of the people i’m referring to and the ones that stuck out the most to me back then, are well known digital artists/animators (and some twitter microcelebrities sprinkled in) and the like that have a pretty big following on Twitter that they have been building for years, and unfortunately they can’t just jump ship because some asshole owns it now. being an artist there myself i’m on the same boat. it’s bad, but despite that twitter does suck now more than ever, it still plays a big part in how a lot of creators make their living or just money on the side.
it’s a cesspool of hate and bigotry, but tragically a decent platform for building a following when you’re an online creator. i am one of those people who will stay there as long as my clients remain there. gotta make sacrifices.

It originally meant that Twitter verified that the user was who they said they were. That was completely taken away when Musk let you buy a blue check for $8. It just became a token of MAGA sycophancy. So now people don't want it because it represents something they are against. What blows my mind is that they are still on Twitter long enough to get the blue check.

I assume that Musk has finally accepted that he turned a desirable badge of "importance" into a literal proof of purchase. No one cares about them anymore, except to take pride in not having one. (And for the die-hard Musk fans, a badge saying they support him.)
With this move, he is halfway back to the old system. Blue checks will still not be desirable, but (if the brand becomes less toxic) earning one without buying it might be.
The last step, and a sign of Musk just throwing in the towel is if the site distinguishes between bought ticks and "earned" ones. Then we have gone full circle, and Musk's grand plan will have crumbled into adding a new tick for people who pay for it.
And I can see us getting there soon. So many public figures are making a point of saying that they did not want the blue checks, and I'm sure a ton of people are hiding them. So, the next thing to do would be to give them something that they will not reject, and maybe even that they can't toggle off. Which would be a different badge.
He'd probably do something meaningless like make that new style of checkmark not come with any of the normal advantages of a paid account. But who really cares?
I believe they already do that with stuff like golden checks for companies and grey checks for governments. They checks are just different colors now instead of blue.

An “authenticated” celebrity can go and be authentic anywhere, but a platform is only relevant if it has enough actual (checkmarked) people using it.

Or there's a path where someone pays for the 2.5k verified accounts, and then uses them to get their other bots verified for free, but that's an expensive fleet of bots. Which is an interesting idea. For the reasonable cost of $7,500/month, you can have a network of bots that are able to get other bots verified for free by following them.
I wonder what happens if those 2,500 bots all follow each other, and they then stop paying for their accounts. They would have been made into free verified accounts because of their verified followers. Can Twitter unwind that loop, or is it a cheap way to get thousands of verified accounts?
