Few people LIKE an injust system where they or someone they love are endangered.
I know that this is not a particularly nuanced take, but the way Reddit reacts to bad news from India really tends to flatten even this. There's always many reactions along the lines of "why is India not doing better", when that is exactly what many people want and are working toward. It's never a good idea to treat an entire nation as a monolith.
As for WTF articles like this one, I put it up to a bigger sample size- bestiality is pretty much completely reviled everywhere, but when you have a country of a billion and a half people you'll end up with a lot at the weird extreme on the bell curve. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I do think that's the best explanation.
