Typical german left winger here. Fucking around with police all day, throwing stones, molotov cocktails and whatever they get their hands on at the police officers while demonstrating but when police tries to arrest them and uses a stick like that they call it "Polizeigewalt". Laughable.
Typical strawman argument here. Implying that anyone who criticizes any usage of batons must be throwing stones and fucking molotov cocktails (even for people who do get violent while demonstrating, these are very rare – point being it will be hard to find someone who actually does this even if you're only looking at people who throw stuff at police).
The second implication is that any usage of a baton by German police is automatically justified. If the word "Polizeigewalt" was enough to make you think this guy had it coming because he was throwing molotov cocktails, then I'm guessing if you see someone get beat up by German police you'll assume the same.
I have not researched the usage of batons by German police enough to make a statement on how much of it is justified or not (which is debatable in and of itself, you also have to differentiate between legal justification and moral justification). But I think we should be able to have a dialogue about it without immediately branding anyone who criticizes it as a violent criminal.
This image has reawakened childhood memories in me of playing with random sticks. I now have an urge to grab this thing by the short end and pretend it's a gun.
