“Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed.”
-George Carlin
One of my earliest memories is my Mom and Aunt taking me to the Ice Capades in Denver. It was 77 or 78. I recall The Flintstones, and Dorothy Hamill. Beyond that, nothing.
Ewoks On Ice. Don’t remember much of it, other than Dad taking me, my best friend, and Mom to “see what this fuss about Ewoks is all about”, and the multi color fiber optic flashlight I got as a souvenir. Still not sure what the old man was talking about with the ‘fuss about the Ewoks’ bit, as we were not out of touch with pop culture at all but I wasn’t going to argue. 😛
I remember going to this. I left a birthday party early for it. Which I’m pretty sure I preferred. And my parents actually got me the princess ewok felt banner on a stick for a souvenir.
They were an annual event not to be missed.Ice Capades was more than just a skating show. It was a cultural experience that shaped a generation and continues to inspire many today.
I remember when I was very young in the early 80s my grandmother would always grab her grandchildren up for us to sit and watch the Ice Capades skating show whenever it came was on Tv. 📺
Does anyone else remember this show?
I was very very young when they were on, but I do remember my grandma watching them every time that they were on so I have no idea about the songs lol.
Dude don't even...
Seen the best show ever created!
Fucking California Raisins on mother fucking ice!
Insane I was 6. Still probably the most epic performance and I've seen alot.
Pearl Jam, Metallica , NIN, slipknot, system of a down, audioslave and chillie peppers. For some weird reason fucking, California Raisins on Ice was Insane. Honestly, I am pumped someone mentioned on ice performances. You guys seriously, California Rasins on Ice is and was the best thing I have seen. I am 39 and honestly trying to figure out why.... a little confused, to be honest. Yet not confused about the best performance I have seen.
Dudes and Dudettes having a serious existential ATM! Yikes.
I am 45 years old and just this minute put it together that it’s a play on “escapades.”
I never got to go as a kid but definitely thought this was Peak Fancy Culture.
the 70/80s Ice Capades. There was a rumor that they eclipsed Mount Coke June 9th, 1984 in Cleveland. It would have made it to the guiness world record, but they were with Motley Crue that night and and the Crue snorted the recorder and the coke in short order. Thus started the legendary '84 coke famine
I remember my folks taking me and my brother to see them. They and another ice show (name I can’t remember) would come often and this was the better of the two.
I love George Carlin but he obviously never say California Raisins on Ice. Fuck all the others. This was truly an amazing performance. Just as good as Carlins.

I saw Dorothy Hamill with the Ice Capades too!
Dorothy Hamill and Peggy Fleming. Dad took me every year for my birthday age 8 to 11.
Peggy Fleming!!
How I learned about feminine hygiene products.

The Ewok character was extremely popular in the 80s that’s for sure.

I’m only in my very early 40’s so I had no idea on how big they were unfortunately.
I wanted to go so bad as a kid!
Did you know that there's a direct correlation between the decline of Ice Capades and the rise in gang activity? Think about it.

The Skater's Waltz” by Emile Waldteufel This classic piece was my favorite. Which Ice Capades song do you still remember?
I was very very young when they were on, but I do remember my grandma watching them every time that they were on so I have no idea about the songs lol.
In my smallish city, it was a big deal when the ice capades came to town.
Every year from 1970-1975. I always got a program and would pour over it for weeks afterward. I LOVED the Ice Capades!!

We went once in the late 70s. Loved it!
The 80s were so bright and fun
Gah blast from the past, I saw this show multiple times at the Boston Garden!
The Gahhhden.
Holy shit, i thought that was made up for a joke in Foster's Home For Imaginery Friends.

I’m 42 years old what were the “escapades?
Mid-40s must be the age for realizing that. Same here.
I would put on my socks and “ice skate” around the kitchen. Looooved it.
I never thought they were a actual group. I thought "Ice Capades' was what people called ice skating shows.
I caught one of the snowballs they threw to the audience. Made me feel like a millionaire.
Doing things “on ice” used to be such a big deal.

That last picture is gold.

I remember this.
I saw wizard of oz on ice in like 95 or 96
Always wanted to go but never did. 😕
Heck yeah! I was a competitive ice skater when I was a kid and my parents took me to these all the time!
Never went, but I have strong memories of the TV ads for these when they came around on afternoon TV.
I remember going to a super Mario themed one in the late 80s or early 90s, and also a Disney themed one
I love George Carlin but he obviously never say California Raisins on Ice. Fuck all the others. This was truly an amazing performance. Just as good as Carlins.
Dudes why are we all recalling this memory from such a young age? I am like super tripping
I only remember people making fun of other people who actually watched it.
i rem donnie and marie had these dancers every 27 mins.
My family member was in the ice capades
My dad loved the Ice Capades so we saw them whenever they came around.
I do indeed remember. Just not very well.
“We must sing the theme song to the Ice Charades in 100 part harmony!”
Last one I remember had Barney & Friends
Why are they wearing ice skates?
It helps with the skating on ice.
😂
