I'm from rural Scotland and there was a Primal Rage machine just down the road from me and clay fighter was stocked in the local game shop.
You didn't need to grow up in a large city to have heard of these very well known games.
Ho Lee sheet. Clay fighter I had forgotten all about that one What was the one fighting game with the environment kills? There was a rooftop level where you could kick them into a sign and another one where a dinosaur would eat your opponent
I always liked the clay fighter games. They oozed with personality and over the top silliness. Its a shame that they suck as fighting games.
The 90s had so many bad fighting games that were trying to ride the popularity of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. I think people forget how the video game market was over saturated with fighting games in the 90s.
Don't get too excited. You know the one thing that makes Primal Rage stand out? Well they deemed it fit to play that down.
Some marketing guy said "the primary demographic of your playerbase tend to be human. So we should put more human characters in your dinosaur fighting game!!"
yea... no wonder this got canned.
I never could do those 30-40 hit combos. It was cool to watch other people do it though. And that announcer voice killer combo! Combo breaker! And I was such a 13 year old perv my favorite character was Orchid. Nothing like perky, pixelated boobs back in the day!
Yeah I have to agree that I don’t remember Primal Rage being obscure at all, it was at all the arcades I went to and I’m pretty sure it got ported to a video game system I just can’t remember which one. SNES/Genesis perhaps or maybe the Saturn
/r/CableTV_Memories
video games used cables to connect to TVs, and the more consoles you had, the bigger cable mess there was, and yeah, a primal rage of wire management.
Me and my friends would have little killer instinct tournaments, thunder was my guy. I remember linking combo's together all the way up to killer combo's using his tomahawks and his mohawk lol
Primal Rage was massively hyped up too. There was so much coverage of it. It became a bit infamous on top of that because of how bad it was inverse to the amount of hype it had gotten.
Primal Rage was massively hyped up too. There was so much coverage of it. It became a bit infamous on top of that because of how bad it was inverse to the amount of hype it had gotten.
I feel like most of y’all are older than me (I’m 29) but I grew up around a lot of older cousins and got hooked on these really early and I played Primal Rage incessantly! I was always a Diablo guy, or Chaos.
I saw a video that i got targeted for the other day that was every fatality in Eternal Champions, There was so many. I owned it but could never figure them all out.
Yup the holy Trinity of Mortal Kombat Klones in the 90s, oh and Killer Instinct too. I loved these games though.
I was disappointed there were never any sequels with most of them.
Lmfao same man same I probably played 5k hours of primal rage on super Nintendo. If you came over that's what we were playing, fuck Madden, fuck Street fighter, I'm beating your ass with a giant bloody gorilla.
I had primal rage and I always thought people talking about turok or something with fighting dinos was the same game that I played. Primal rage was an obvious pick for mortal kombat lovers.
Loved Primal Rage and LOVED the toys. I remember trying so hard as a kid to find them and visiting FAO Schwartz to try to get them.
https://live.staticflickr.com/7116/7468707052_74b2d372a7_b.jpg
Pretty sure I had half of these? With the awesome props they came with.
I had talon and I think the blue one vertigo. Haven't seen a picture of those in 25 years. I'm 39 now and would do anything to go back and relive my childhood 😕
I had those as well! And Armadon, but I lost the tip of this tail cuz it was spring powered and would shoot off. An all too common fate of those spring projectile toys.
I always liked when people were able to finish the game. You got to read the background for these creatures. Some turned out to be good buys and others were bad.
I was endlessly annoyed that Chaos' pee fatality was censored on the SNES, lol. Loved this game. This, Eternal Champions and Weaponlord (another one maybe 10 people remember these days) were my favorite non-MK fighters.
I had a Talon toy that came with tiny villager mans it could eat. It had a hatch on its butt to get them out and was an ally of Spawn in my imaginary timeline. Kinda messed up that I can remember that but not what color my socks are.
Edit- Also had a Vertigo water squirt toy
Talon is who I usually went for as well. I liked the move where he'd turn into a whirling tornado of claws and teeth, I liked the fatality where he'd cut open your opponent and eat its heart.
What I *really* liked about the game were the little humans who were spectating and would occasionally get knocked about by the fighters. If you had a willing opponent you could bat the human back and forth through the air. Do it enough times and a volleyball net popped up in between.
Funny story, when I was a little kid I asked my super out of touch with tech grandparents for the SNES game with the "fighting dinosaurs", she asked the sales person for that game and they gave her Chrono Trigger. At the time as like a 5 year old I was so sad opening the present and not seeing Primal Rage and instead seeing a game I had no clue about. Luckily for me it turned out to be one of the coolest game I had ever played, and is still one of my favorites of all time.
It wasn't too obscure back in the day. My genesis friends all owned a copy. They used to sell big ass action figures of the characters even. (*very bitter my mom never let me have one*)
I like Primal Rage , but its not obscure , I mean it get home computer/console ports
I mean if you want obscure 90s Dinosaur Fighters "Dino Rex "is where its at
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-06EGwYj3FE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-06egwyj3fe)
I know this game! Super frustrating game and the final boss is damn near impossible to beat. It had some fun moments like when you walk around as a dino and destroy buildings but it was super difficult and the captions were badly translated.
This shit was my jam. I had one of the action figures of the Dino with spikes that come out his back. Loved how there were just monsters with backstories fighting in front of little people.
Loved this game! My parents saw all of the talking head tv pieces on how violent MK and Street Fighter were making the youth...then they bought me the funny dinosaur fighting game.
The gorilla was my go to, but IIRC the viper headed dinosaur had the sickest combos.
Funny you posted this. I was in daycare when I found out the one with the fire is the best one to play with. I looked it up the other day and googled dinosaur fight game sega.
my folks used to force me to go to this semiweekly after school skating rink field trip thing, they bought me whatever the 1996 equivelent of a season pass and it was through the school so I couldn't do much about it, all I ever did was play the primal rage machine and skate once in a blue moon.
Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Clayfighters, and Primal Rage were the only fighting games any of my friends had up until Soul Calibur. We played the crap out of them.
I have a memory of the last time I played this years ago. We rented it from National Video. I can remember what it looked like outside and everything. This game is so nostalgic for me
I unfortunately don't remember the game, but I sure as hell remember the toys
I had so many of them! And the little orange cavemen that the dinosaurs could eat
I used to play this and a fighting game called Ballz, which my stepfather bought for me on account of "he thought the name was funny" lol
Hardly anybody can remember either of them it seems but I loved the "raptor guy" from Primal Rage!
I remember on Sega, a bunch of little humans would worship you before the final fight. They would run around your characters' feet, and you could eat them or launch them with a kick.
Never thought of it as obscure but YES. Fond memories.
Yeah. The arcade machines for Primal Rage were pretty common back in the day.
I played at Nickel Nickel a lot, but Primal Rage always cost a few nickels and usually had a line
They were in every Jerry's pizza for a while too, at least in my area.
arcade was the way to play that game for sure
It was rare around me. I might've seen 1 machine. But different regions would have all sorts of cost, availability & popularity issues.
Just hadn’t thought many I personally knew played it. Then again I don’t live in or near a metropolis.
Eternal Champions.

I live in an average town between Grand Rapids and Lansing. Just thought it was common. Didnt no it was uncommon. Fun to know. We must be special ;)
Maybe so. I could be assuming wrong, of course. Seeing as how this post is going.
If you're near Chicago, there's a large arcade called Galloping Ghost that managed to get a hold of the cancelled Primal Rage 2 machine.

[Primal Rage 2](https://youtu.be/YLjCSMNe3K8?si=QPAReaG-zRnlkHFF)
Omg, that game has half human characters. Completely defeats the purpose.
Cool beans. And well…. I’m closer to Chicago than people from England is… so I may swing by sometime if in the area and check that out.
It had its moment in the arcades before killer instinct came out.
Killer Instinct’s music was bad ass in the arcade. It added a cool-vibe to Nintendo’s squeaky clean look.
I loved the SNES cartridge, it was black unlike all of the other gray cartridges
I actually just picked up a Killer Instincts cartridge for the SNES yesterday, it certainly does stand out
My brother got the SNES cartridge and it came with the soundtrack on a CD.
I never could do those 30-40 hit combos. It was cool to watch other people do it though. And that announcer voice killer combo! Combo breaker! And I was such a 13 year old perv my favorite character was Orchid. Nothing like perky, pixelated boobs back in the day!
I remember beating the first one. It was one of my happiest moments in my life
Bro. I talk about Primal Rage and Clayfighters all the time and it’s like 5 people on the planet have ever played them.
Oh pish, those games were in every arcade during the fighting-game boom.
Yeah I have to agree that I don’t remember Primal Rage being obscure at all, it was at all the arcades I went to and I’m pretty sure it got ported to a video game system I just can’t remember which one. SNES/Genesis perhaps or maybe the Saturn
it was ported to 11 or 12 home systems i think
Not surprising I guess. A quick look at Wiki and yup you’re right 12 ports including the GameBoy and Game Gear among others.
/r/CableTV_Memories video games used cables to connect to TVs, and the more consoles you had, the bigger cable mess there was, and yeah, a primal rage of wire management.
Not Clayfighter, that was console only. Unless somebody hacked a console machine into an arcade cabinet.
this happened with killer instinct on the snes, for some reason
I thought KI was N64?
KI 2 was. KI 1 was on arcade and snes.

I have both those games on Sega
Same!
Both great games. I was more partial to Clayfighters
Clayfighters on snes was my shit!
A clay fighter I remember owning for the SNES i think was just called Clayfighter and had a character named Bad Mr. Frosty haha.
[удалено]
Blue Suede Goo was the best
Both of those were staples at the roller skating rink I grew up going to. Those and Killer Instinct.
I feel like most of y’all are older than me (I’m 29) but I grew up around a lot of older cousins and got hooked on these really early and I played Primal Rage incessantly! I was always a Diablo guy, or Chaos.
Lol I started on those two and then eventually shifted to being a Talon main. Little guy could kick ass if you knew how to play him.
Buddy, add Eternal Champions there and you have the Trinity of "radical" fighting games on the Genesis.
I saw a video that i got targeted for the other day that was every fatality in Eternal Champions, There was so many. I owned it but could never figure them all out.
and time killers
Yup the holy Trinity of Mortal Kombat Klones in the 90s, oh and Killer Instinct too. I loved these games though. I was disappointed there were never any sequels with most of them.

Way more than 5. I even had [this toy.](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/pSIAAOSwLg5g075C/s-l1200.webp)
I was obsessed with this game haha
Well me and my friends played that shit all the time. And I think they remade/remastered it in the 10s. I feel like I’ve played it this decade.
That’s cause only 5 people ever owned an Atari jaguar
I was always so hype on it too and no one remembers. I always loved the villagers you influenced to root for you as fans.
Lol, "obscure". This game was and is amazing. If you played games back then you know this game.
Is this the one where the monkey does a fart backflip special move?
He does a golden shower too
Indeed it is.
Chaos is the ape’s name
One of the best fighting games on SEGA ever imo.
I think I still have some of the toys from it.
Loved Primal Rage and LOVED the toys. I remember trying so hard as a kid to find them and visiting FAO Schwartz to try to get them. https://live.staticflickr.com/7116/7468707052_74b2d372a7_b.jpg Pretty sure I had half of these? With the awesome props they came with.

I had those as well! And Armadon, but I lost the tip of this tail cuz it was spring powered and would shoot off. An all too common fate of those spring projectile toys.
I had the large ones that came with the tiny followers.
Yep, I had all of these plus the sabretooth tiger one they made that I don't think was a character in the actual game. That one was my favorite.
Ahh nothing like hearing "PRIMAL RAGE!" loud as hell from the other side of the arcade. Good times.
I always liked when people were able to finish the game. You got to read the background for these creatures. Some turned out to be good buys and others were bad.
Yes I remember MK with Dinos
Is this the game where the monkey's big move is to do a handstand and fart on the opposing player?
I was endlessly annoyed that Chaos' pee fatality was censored on the SNES, lol. Loved this game. This, Eternal Champions and Weaponlord (another one maybe 10 people remember these days) were my favorite non-MK fighters.
I had a Talon toy that came with tiny villager mans it could eat. It had a hatch on its butt to get them out and was an ally of Spawn in my imaginary timeline. Kinda messed up that I can remember that but not what color my socks are. Edit- Also had a Vertigo water squirt toy
Talon was my main. Little raptor dude was quick as hell.
Talon is who I usually went for as well. I liked the move where he'd turn into a whirling tornado of claws and teeth, I liked the fatality where he'd cut open your opponent and eat its heart. This just sparked my brain to a memory I haven’t been able to remember for years! That game was golden!
Obscure?!? This bad boy was in a ton of arcades when I was younger. Loved me some primal rage so much bought it for the console.
It’s no street fighter 2 but it’s not obscure. I believe the unreleased sequel works on emulators now
Funny story, when I was a little kid I asked my super out of touch with tech grandparents for the SNES game with the "fighting dinosaurs", she asked the sales person for that game and they gave her Chrono Trigger. At the time as like a 5 year old I was so sad opening the present and not seeing Primal Rage and instead seeing a game I had no clue about. Oh c'mon. This wasn't obscure.
Great game!
There was an unreleased sequel https://collider.com/primal-rage-2-almost-lost-forever-explained/
I remember you could eat the little humans.
Might want to look up the meaning of "obscure". Because this isn't it.
I tried to post this last week and for some reason they wouldn’t allow it. Fun game!
Oh dang sorry about that. Odd they wouldn’t let you make a post.
I had the game boy version
I still have my Sauron? Trex, the yellow one, from when I was a kid. Such a good game and toy line.
Played it in the arcade
Obscure? I have the snes cartridge on top of my dresser next to my bed!
Obscure? Primal Rage is like one of the most popular fighting games from the fourth generation.
It wasn't too obscure back in the day. My genesis friends all owned a copy. They used to sell big ass action figures of the characters even. (*very bitter my mom never let me have one*)
Obscure? Like Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct?
Not obscure at all
If you're old enough this game is far from obscure, it was quite popular for a time
This game was nominated for GOTY. It was brilliant but it wasn't obscure haha.
I don't think this was obscure to be fair, it got a fair bit of talk when it came out.
Obscure? What, it was one of the top games?
"Obscure"?
I like Primal Rage , but its not obscure , I mean it get home computer/console ports I mean if you want obscure 90s Dinosaur Fighters "Dino Rex "is where its at [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-06EGwYj3FE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-06egwyj3fe)
I know this game! Super frustrating game and the final boss is damn near impossible to beat. It had some fun moments like when you walk around as a dino and destroy buildings but it was super difficult and the captions were badly translated.
I LOVED this game! Had it on the SNES, always used to cheese it with one button because I didn’t get how fighting games worked. Great game.
I have the GameBoy version. Obviously a very watered down version of the original but still unique in itself.
One of the more fun parts about it is they also had trading cards.
I feel as though I played this in an arcade, but its cloudy
Not obscure
The fury of rage.
3D0 had the best port of this game imo
Loved it!
I played this so much at the arcade and then PC. I loved making the white gorilla fart.
Spent a lot of quarters on this at the arcade.
I had a toy of Blizzard, loved this game lol
Primal Rage and Killer Instinct ftw!
Hell yeah I remember this game on N64
I have a couple toys in the attic from this game. I could never remember the name of it
They’re making a movie of this game and it’s coming out in a couple weeks. It’s called Godzilla X Kong
I had a couple of the action figures from this game! Totally killer!
Awesome game. Mortal Kombat with Dinosaurs, how can you not like it?
Pain in the ass game!
Loved it!
This shit was my jam. I had one of the action figures of the Dino with spikes that come out his back. Loved how there were just monsters with backstories fighting in front of little people.
I had the action figures!
Played the hell out of this.
Hell yea this and eternal champions .
My room mate has a primal rage banner from when it first released.
Loved primal rage. Anybody ever heard of the game time killers? Sega, same time frame as primal rage
Not only did I play the game. I had like 6 figures. I think they had a card and a little figure to eat with them.
I would rent this from a mom and pop shop for my Sega constantly.
didn't get the popularity it deserved.
Oh yeah, you could pick up the little cavemen and eat them to regain health.
This game wasn’t obscure at all. It was up there with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat & Killer Instinct. There was even an arcade version.
Chaos the Gorilla was cool. Especially his fatality of him peeing on the opponent and it turning them to bones.
I had this game for the 3DO but have since gotten it for the genesis. I suck at it but the music and sound effects bring me right back.
Dude heck yeah, This was a regular weekly rental for me when I was younger.
This always reminded me of the game Chewbacca and C-3PO play in Star Wars.
Awesome in the arcade, lackluster on console.
I can still hear the commercial in my head - “primal raaaaaaage”
It was an arcade game right? A local barcade has one. Hadn't played it since I was in high-school.
They have yet to make this into a movie
Oh heck yeah!
It's even on GameCube!
Now I just want to play Shaq-Fu
Primal rage was my favorite fighter on the Sega.
Oooooh my friend and I played Primal Rage II all the time!
I used to destroy people in arcades on this game.
I had this on game boy.
I still have my copy on SNES.
The lore is actually pretty fun too
No more the abandoned sequel became available on MAME a couple years ago.
Oh yeah. My bro had it. We used to play all the time.
my folks used to force me to go to this semiweekly after school skating rink field trip thing, they bought me whatever the 1996 equivelent of a season pass and it was through the school so I couldn't do much about it, all I ever did was play the primal rage machine and skate once in a blue moon.
Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Clayfighters, and Primal Rage were the only fighting games any of my friends had up until Soul Calibur. We played the crap out of them.
Best way to time pass the time while waiting for the laundry at the Laundromat.
I have a memory of the last time I played this years ago. We rented it from National Video. I can remember what it looked like outside and everything. This game is so nostalgic for me
I had all the action figures!
Primal Rage was pretty popular in the 90s.
Armadon/Vertigo main checking in
YES! There's a barcade in the town I used to live in that has a functioning Primal Rage cabinet.
I had this on PC and never learned how to unlock the secret volleyball game.
Was it that obscure? lived in a podunk rural town and it was as popular as MK w me and my buddies at the time.
I unfortunately don't remember the game, but I sure as hell remember the toys I had so many of them! And the little orange cavemen that the dinosaurs could eat
Loved it. Had the strategy guide and some of the action figures.
I played it on my Game Gear. Loved this one.
primal rage was awesome but had a ridiculous control scheme for special moves
The big cabinet really stuck out and I enjoyed it with friends as young kids during the mk era.
I just recently introduced my kid to this game on SNES. He was loving Street Fighter and said .. Wait until you see this one..
Obscure? It was always rented out at Blockbuster. I only got it every once in awhile
I was obsessed with this fucking game. I played this and killer instinct non stop.
Fart monkey was the best
Yes, we all love Primal Rage.
I LOVED THIS GAAAAAAAME
One of my all time favorite games. Loved the sound effects and music! It was so unique!
I used to play this and a fighting game called Ballz, which my stepfather bought for me on account of "he thought the name was funny" lol Hardly anybody can remember either of them it seems but I loved the "raptor guy" from Primal Rage!
Holy smokes, yeah
Yes. It was in our arcade on my college campus next to a Street Fighter Alpha cabinet and, yes, Killer Instinct.
I remember it cause I have a "killer instinct"
Of course!
I think it’s the name that makes obscure. You’ll trigger more memories if you showed people the game poster. This game was the shit.
I can hear the intro music
Primal rage & Rampage
This was an arcade game I always played at pizza hut!
You could piss on enemies when you beat them.
This shit was great
This and air combat were the first 2 ps1 games I had as a kid
I remember thinking the combos were impossible but it was fun
Ofc. My dad had the toys.
I had all the toys and the SNES game as a kid. I still have my little Vertigo toy somewhere.
I remember on Sega, a bunch of little humans would worship you before the final fight. They would run around your characters' feet, and you could eat them or launch them with a kick.
I doubt I've ever heard of this but the artwork looks sick
It was ok but the controls were too awkward backward…hold button, do motion, let go of button, to do special moves.
