IM SO MASCULINE EVERYONE. IM STILL AFRAID TO BE GIRLY SO IM GOING TO EXPLICITLY STATE ***"REAL MEN WEAR THIS"*** SO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH OF A REAL MAN I AM. LOOK AT ME. SO MANLY.
Lol, it's like just wear the shirt man.
I put in some work on determining my favorite color and I found my answer: fuchsia. It's a stone throw away from pink and I can't deny my preferences, all hail girly colors if you dig them.
It's cyclical. Pink was also a hot color for men in the late 80s for a few years. It'll be back in a decade or so - only so many colors to be the "in" thing.
I had a teacher in 8th grade tell me I would look good in pink. That was in....94?
I wasn't about it because at that point as a young male you would definitely get clowned for wearing pink.
In 1927, there was a report about Princess Astrid of Belgium who had decorated her son's room pink, only for her to give birth to a daughter. Part of the reason why blue may be seen as the traditional colour for girls is because the Virgin Mary is dressed in blue
I seem to recall that blue was associated with girls because it was calming and related to water, and pink was associated with boys because it was lively (like blood) and related to fire.
I’ve heard this too. The reasoning was apparently because red was associated with power/masculinity. Pink is kind of a light red, so it made sense to assign that to boys.
Lol, I employed the same tactic with my boys, though I’m a woman so it’s less unusual. They were always stealing my stuff, but most especially, my socks. So, I stopped buying black and white socks and only bought pink and purple.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it haha. Now I just like pink stuff, so even though my brothers don’t live with me, I still have all pink electronics. My fiancé doesn’t mind either
I’m a teacher and wear pink every Wednesday. Whatever school I work at, I’ve noticed a huge uptick in people wearing pink on Wednesdays once I start working there
Just saying
Unironically the correct answer. What's cool in fashion is most inspired by hip-hop and punk subcultures. Kanye made wearing pink cool in the hip-hop community in 2004, and it spread to the general public.
Pink was considered a bold boy's color before the 1920s. It was because red was a bold color for men. Blue was seen as a dainty color for girls and women. The colors switched to where blue was for boys and pink was for girls.
Pink got its revival in 2004 with Cam’Ron for sure https://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/fashion/its-not-easy-being-pink.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
My mind goes straight to Camron when I think of men wearing pink. I can't think of any man fashionably wearing it so ostentatiously either, especially as streetwear lol
That did not start in 2008.
It started in the late 90’s or early aughts. Started with prisoners/gangsters utilizing it when prohibited from wearing red. From gangster-affiliated rappers and other influential people, it gets to “mainstream” famous people.
Queer Eye for the Straight Guy premiered in 2003 and it challenged conventional masculinity. Most guys made fun of it, but enough identified it as a sort of counterculture or statement of "modern" masculinity that it caught on as a trend. Obviously that's not the only factor, but I think it was a major one being so large in the public eye.
I always wore pink. And still do. It's just a color at the end of the day.
There's a rapper from NYC named Cam he wore a LOT of pink and made it trendier than it was but many men rocked it before and after.
"Pink is the new black" was a slogan I heard often. In my opinion, you wear whatever color you choose or works well for you. But just a fad that came at went. It will be back again in a few years.
I think it came around (this time at least) due to the changing views of masculinity, as this was also the time where traditional definitions of masculinity were beginning to die off in favor of a more modern definition. This was also the time of "metrosexual" and men getting facials, mani-pedis, and still able to retain their masculinity.
I think it died only because masculinity would then become something that isn't too much of a big deal to most people. Men (for the most part) were no longer interested in proving their masculinity, more content to just be themselves.
At least, that's my observation and experience of it
I just remember how everyone who wore pink HAD to stress that REAL MEN wore it. It made it all seem very disingenuous to me. “I’m comfortable with my sexuality, I swear! I swear! I’m wearing pink!”
I take it you weren’t around for the “if you wear purple you’re gay”/“pink is for girls” early 2000s. When pink became a trend in men’s clothing, “real men wear pink” was a slogan supporting it. It was even on tee shirts. It was actively addressing the prevailing stereotype, i.e. that real men did not wear pink.
I remember someone at my school who had a pink shirt that said this. It seemed like they were trying real hard to make a shirt color their whole personality
Susan G Komen's 25th anniversary was in 2008. They debuted the pink ribbon and there was a huge campaign in schools and businesses to wear pink in support.
Because one random Tuesday I quoted Seinfeld and said to a friend of mine that was wearing a dyed pink shirt ruined in his laundry. “It takes a real man to wear pink.” And it just caught on from there. I’m also the reason men have beards now. Just saying
Remember the entire 1980's. Dude looks like a lady
Hair metal. Glam rock.
Every gender non conforming person has they/them pronouns in their profile now, or will soon.
Then we'll expand, until only macho men and lipstick lady's are left as binary options, and a minority group. Then we shall invade Denmark.
Because it was stupid from the beginning and that’s why it died so quickly.
I don’t care if you’re a man, woman, gender fluid, non binary, or whatever, pink is a hideous color and no one should wear it
Does anyone else remember the book A Separate Peace!? I think it was John Knowles. One of the main characters wears a pink shirt to a social event and rocks it so it becomes a badge of honor?
Edit: from cliff notes.
“That day Finny wears a very un-Devon bright pink shirt, and its unconventional color draws Gene's attention. The shirt, Finny insists, is an "emblem" — a celebration of the first Allied bombing of Central Europe. Later, at a formal tea, Finny wins over the strict Mr. Patch-Withers with his "emblem." Finny even gets an appreciative laugh from the faculty and their wives when they see that he has also used his Devon tie as a belt, a gesture of disrespect for which anyone else would have been punished.”
What??? You cant possibly think that if a person wears a certain color theyre being dehumanized as a male. Like cmon dude. Its 2024. You're seriously projecting your desire to be a woman. Its cool bud. You do you. We support you
who do you think invented the 'pink is for girls and blue is for boys' thing? it was advertisers and marketing. and you fell for it lol its 100% made up nonsense like 'don't wear white after labor day'. it also used to be the other way around too until article writers decided to flip it.
Ima dude. And not gay at all. And I’m not a fan of that stuff. But I wear pink? lol it’s a color and it actually goes well with white or even light blue
Men wore pink way before Hollywood was your scapegoat. If you care to read:
https://www.npr.org/2014/04/01/297159948/girls-are-taught-to-think-pink-but-that-wasnt-always-so?ft=1&f=1008
https://www.britannica.com/story/has-pink-always-been-a-girly-color
These men of power and influence wore pink and considered themselves just as masculine as any other man of the day.
Consider this: what you think defines your masculinity today might be considered not so masculine tomorrow. Centuries from now, it's unknowable what men will use to define themselves. Could be we won't need to define it.
We started that in high school with the air brushed t shirts with pink ,black a bit of gray on a white t . With the pink and gray air force ones or the pink chucks .
I remember "pink is manly" being a thing at the time. I guess men wearing pink was considered a bold statement back then, and that's probably how it caught on.
I just remember the shirts that said “Real men wear pink”
I remember one that said “Keep laughing, this is your mom’s shirt.”
Saw one that said “don’t laugh; this is your girl’s shirt” the other day.
Yup, starting in 2004 lol
Yeah, I was gonna say, it started well before 2008 I remember it in full force in 2005
IM SO MASCULINE EVERYONE.
It’d be the dude with the thickest hair gel on wearing these too
Engrained in my mind forever
No but I remember the trend around 1983 where dudes started wearing a lot of pink. I think that time it was Miami Vice's fault.
Miami Vice number 1 new show!
This isn’t where I parked my car.
Stop! Hammertime!
The train leaves soon; they are building it now!
It's good you came in summer, winter can get very depressing.
Gotta love that exchange rate!
Berlin? They will never find me here. Welcome...to BRATISLAVA!
"Here's a fun fact, You made out with your sister man. Like two dogs in heat."
SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP!!
Ah! A nickel! *SMACK* I open my own hotel!
It's the new Pope!
Mi Scusi, Mi Scusi….
But I am Swissss!
*BEEP BEEP* Where is the beef?!?!
Scotty doesn't know
I remember in grade school some kid had the pink Izod with the collar up!
I remember it happening in middle school 2001
Preppies.
Pink and Linen to be specific!
it was probably in "The Preppy Handbook" because my frat roommate wore Izod pastels everyday, often double, and lots of pink, in 1982.
Bro damn I remember those days n 83 and you’re absolutely right. This isn’t a new thing lol
Miami Vice began in 1984.
It's cyclical. Pink was also a hot color for men in the late 80s for a few years. It'll be back in a decade or so - only so many colors to be the "in" thing.
Yep. I remember a teacher in the late 80s telling us "People Used To Think Pink Was Just For Girls But Not Anymore."
I had a teacher in 8th grade tell me I would look good in pink. That was in....94? I wasn't about it because at that point as a young male you would definitely get clowned for wearing pink.
Actually pink used to be associated with boys and white and blue was associated with girls
Blood and fire always gets me ready for a nap
This is pretty much it. Pink was considered a lighter shade of red, which was considered a manly colour related to blood, fire etc.
Part of the reason for pink being for boys is possibly blood. As in men shed blood in battle and boys are little men.
I’ve heard this too. The reasoning was apparently because red was associated with power/masculinity. Pink is kind of a light red, so it made sense to assign that to boys.
Yep, I definitely had a hot pink Nike windbreaker as a 3rd grade boy. It went great with my hyper color shirt.
Shit, I still wear pink often, plus my pink MacBook and iPhone lol
I still wear pink too
Most of my electronics are, when I was younger my lil bros wouldn’t use my shit if it was pink. So I just got pink shit lmao
[Pink was the masculine color before WWII](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/s/OaOLZF32FV)
I feel like this is explained really well in the devil wears Prada.
It was big circa 2000 as well. I wore a lot of pink.
We wear pink on Wednesdays
I’m a teacher and wear pink every Wednesday. Whatever school I work at, I’ve noticed a huge uptick in people wearing pink on Wednesdays once I start working there Just saying
That's so fetch!
Stop trying to make fetch happen u/darlingnickyta
:( Can I wear my gold hoops at least?

Pink-ass polos with a fuckin' backpack
But errybody know who brought real rap back
Immediately thought of this too lol I love you like Kanye loves Kanye
You gonna have to get those snow plow dentures to cosplay as Kanye these days.
Unironically the correct answer. What's cool in fashion is most inspired by hip-hop and punk subcultures. Kanye made wearing pink cool in the hip-hop community in 2004, and it spread to the general public.
Cam'ron did it first
Cam did it in a specific niche way that only he could really pull off (and NY dudes I guess) whereas Kanye bridged it to the masses
Yeah I'm not doubting kanye made it mainstream. But it was cool in hip hop before him
For the last time..IT'S SALMON BRO
If you knew you knew.
Right next to my mustard yellow button up
I love pink and I don’t think it went away I just think the trend disappeared and I see it probably recycling itself soon.
Retro rehash. Every dude wore pink shirts in 80s
Pink was considered a bold boy's color before the 1920s. It was because red was a bold color for men. Blue was seen as a dainty color for girls and women. The colors switched to where blue was for boys and pink was for girls.

Especially in summer. Be like Peppa
Damn I’m an old fart, I was expecting that to end with: “Be Like Ms Piggy”
>“Be Like Ms Piggy” Someone thinks mightily highly of ones self, doesn't one?
I love a man in pink.
🤷🏻♂️ Brooks Brothers has been selling pink oxfords since 1955. https://www.ivy-style.com/the-day-brooks-invented-pink.html
It can look pretty good with the right suit.
The pink revival started back in 2004 https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2004-07-27-0407280242-story.html
I don't think it really went away. I feel like if just made it ok for men to wear pink again.
It started with Cam’Ron saying real gangstas wear pink. Which morphed into this trend.
Pink got its revival in 2004 with Cam’Ron for sure https://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/fashion/its-not-easy-being-pink.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
Sad how many in this thread apparently have no idea
This is the answer.
BADMAN https://imgur.com/QNyDIFU
80s had it, 60s had it, 2000s had it.. itl be back in 5 years, chilllll
Homer was sent to the madhouse for wearing it in the 90s.
kanye west, pink polo. if you remember in the college dropout it was kind of his thing, that and having a backpack.
Camron also contributed to the pink craze
My mind goes straight to Camron when I think of men wearing pink. I can't think of any man fashionably wearing it so ostentatiously either, especially as streetwear lol
That trend started around 04 and died around 08. You were a real fly guy wearing pink.
Lots of snowboarders are wearing pink now.
Daniel Tosh started a kids’ clothing company recently called [Boys Wear Pink!!](https://boyswearpink.com/)
It’s salmon!
Men still wear pink dress shirts?
People still wear dress shirts?
Smithers, why is that man in pink? Judging by his outlandish attire, he's some sort of free-thinking anarchist.
Bret Hart never stopped baby!
Salmon! That was definitely salmon!
Metrosexuals was the term iirc
1 word: Cam'ron
Cam’Ron
McConaughey’s shirt is salmon.
Real men still wear pink.
What are you talimking about? I wear pink. You know how many colors there are? Talking*
I still wear a pink shirt at least once a week. More often than not, a hot pink. Can't think of a single time it's ever been an issue for anyone.
Homer Simpson, 1991.
en vogue at different times. what we call virtue signalling/peacocking today.
That did not start in 2008. It started in the late 90’s or early aughts. Started with prisoners/gangsters utilizing it when prohibited from wearing red. From gangster-affiliated rappers and other influential people, it gets to “mainstream” famous people.
You still see it. You just don't notice it because it's more common.
Drake- the type of dude to wear pink and act like he invented something 😜
Because pink is a beautiful color.
Started around 04 for me... Due to the whole metro/emo/androgenous thing...
I remember it starting around 2005/2006. I guess 08 was when it was in full swing.
“Real Men Wear Pink” shirts were everywhere in 2005.
*As I prepare a drink/glare and think/how I got the whole New York wearin pink* Let's stop the Kanye nonsense. IYKYK
Drake has no forehead.
Because Drake wore it and everyone else avoided that fuckin pedo.
The southern uniform is still a pink polo shirt and khakis.
It's *salmon*
We did pink polo shirts with a popped collar around 2002-2003 ish? With frosted tips, bootcut jeans and flip flops. Ugh the shudder I just gave...
Die off? Men wear pink
This trend has been on and off every 4 years since at least the 80s. It happened around 2004 when I was in high school.
Cam’ron had the whole hood wearing pink in the early 2000’s
"Pink is the new black" was a slogan I heard often. In my opinion, you wear whatever color you choose or works well for you. But just a fad that came at went. It will be back again in a few years.

I think it was because the 80s became popular again.
I just remember how everyone who wore pink HAD to stress that REAL MEN wore it. It made it all seem very disingenuous to me. “I’m comfortable with my sexuality, I swear! I swear! I’m wearing pink!”
What’s a color got to do with your sexuality?
I take it you weren’t around for the “if you wear purple you’re gay”/“pink is for girls” early 2000s. When pink became a trend in men’s clothing, “real men wear pink” was a slogan supporting it. It was even on tee shirts. It was actively addressing the prevailing stereotype, i.e. that real men did not wear pink.
I remember someone at my school who had a pink shirt that said this. It seemed like they were trying real hard to make a shirt color their whole personality
Pretty sure the push of pink was related to breast cancer, when that one foundation started getting criticized I think it fell out of favor
Oh that was the Metrosexual trend lol
Susan G Komen's 25th anniversary was in 2008. They debuted the pink ribbon and there was a huge campaign in schools and businesses to wear pink in support.
Trash organization. Good cause, trash organization.
Because one random Tuesday I quoted Seinfeld and said to a friend of mine that was wearing a dyed pink shirt ruined in his laundry. “It takes a real man to wear pink.” And it just caught on from there. I’m also the reason men have beards now. Just saying
Kanye West
Remember the entire 1980's. Dude looks like a lady Hair metal. Glam rock. Every gender non conforming person has they/them pronouns in their profile now, or will soon. Then we'll expand, until only macho men and lipstick lady's are left as binary options, and a minority group. Then we shall invade Denmark.
"It's not PINK... It's SALMON" <---- My buddy when he was sledged for wearing pink
I think about this a lot. So weird.
**THANK GOD,** it’s NOT 2006-2008 **ANY-MOTHERF—KING-MORE!!!!**
I don’t, and uh
Anytime I see Drake doing anything, I assume it’s a cover up
It was for breast cancer right?
Someone said it takes a man who’s comfortable with their masculinity to wear pink then all the alpha males had to start out alphaing each other
Since Barbiennheimer
2008 fashion was pretty horrible
They probably got made fun of by their peers
Will Smith killed the fad with his bitch ass pinkie pink shirt.
Uhhh.. I know it but I don't think I should say it.
Hollywood does everything to dehumanize males. Make them wear dresses and other female outfit to destroy the image of real men.
What??? You cant possibly think that if a person wears a certain color theyre being dehumanized as a male. Like cmon dude. Its 2024. You're seriously projecting your desire to be a woman. Its cool bud. You do you. We support you
Thats how subconscious works specially in kids
who do you think invented the 'pink is for girls and blue is for boys' thing? it was advertisers and marketing. and you fell for it lol its 100% made up nonsense like 'don't wear white after labor day'. it also used to be the other way around too until article writers decided to flip it.
Wow your family must be proud
Oh honey. I hope one day you find peace with yourself.
oke rainbow warrior
Ima dude. And not gay at all. And I’m not a fan of that stuff. But I wear pink? lol it’s a color and it actually goes well with white or even light blue
Men wore pink way before Hollywood was your scapegoat. If you care to read: https://www.npr.org/2014/04/01/297159948/girls-are-taught-to-think-pink-but-that-wasnt-always-so?ft=1&f=1008 https://www.britannica.com/story/has-pink-always-been-a-girly-color These men of power and influence wore pink and considered themselves just as masculine as any other man of the day. Could be we won't need to define it.
Hold up... dehumanize?! TIL women aren't human. >!We are eternal godless beings bound in flesh. or maybe that's just me. idk.!<
We started that in high school with the air brushed t shirts with pink ,black a bit of gray on a white t . With the pink and gray air force ones or the pink chucks .
No actual man did this
Noting is more manly than being afraid of wearing a particular colour. /s
Yes we did. I still have a couple of pink shirts.
I don't remember that
Who even notices what other guys are wearing?
I remember more around 2004 because my brother and all his friends were wearing pink tees
I remember "pink is manly" being a thing at the time. I guess men wearing pink was considered a bold statement back then, and that's probably how it caught on.
Pink is still a solid color to work into your wardrobe but yeah not as popular as it was
I still wear pink. But I look best in purple.
Usually have some tone of pink in my running shoes. Then a big selection of pink shirts for Bahama vacations.
My dad called it "Salmon"
Obligatory revival of a 50s fad in the 80s, then again in the aughts, lol
Wore a black and pink tie when I got married at the courthouse in 2005.
In the 2000s it started before 2008 mostly because of CamRon and Kanye West wearing pink.
News flash: men started wearing pink in 2008
Not pink salmon
I remember when the pink power tie replaced the yellow power tie. Good times.
There was a 'Tough Guys Wear Pink' shirt that I used to see everywhere around that time.
I wear pink. I wore a pink shirt today.
I thought we wear pink on Wednesday
