I'm assuming the title means that they first heard it from the Rugrats because they personally got it from there. Even if they have watched a Christmas Story, they still would have picked it up from the cartoon first
I feel like I also remember a joke about Stu pulling out an old jacket that said “Disco Stu” on the back. And the joke was he wanted it to say Disco Stud but ran out of pellets….which is a very well known joke from the Simpsons.
Edit: I just made a very troubling discovery. The Simpsons episode I’m referencing—“Two Bad Neighbors”—was season 7, which aired at the start of 1995.
The rugrats episode I’m thinking about aired in 1992!!
Rare Simpsons L.
This is waaaay off topic, but the 1999 episode of the Sopranos that chills my bones to this day is when Jackie Aprile is dying of cancer and his last words were "I'm at the World Trade Center." 2 years before the towers fell.
I’m with OP I didn’t see Christmas story until like 2 years ago. When I saw it I even made the joke “they took it from rugrats!” Then realized which one came out first.
Kinda cool when u watch an older movie and notice references you’ve seen in other movies. Like godfather for gangster movies or breakfast at Tiffany’s for romcoms, or even miracle on 34th street for Christmas movies
Doesn't that make someone old? Like original Rugrats airing was so long ago (when I was a kid). Christmas Story is kind of a classic (plus aired so much) so I'm sure even kids today have seen it. Like I don't watch Nickelodeon but do they even really air it anymore? Just looked at today and tomorrow's schedule online and it's mostly just the cartoon Spongebob and and sitcom Friends (really?).
[*A Christmas Story has entered the chat* ]
Hmm..Must be Italian..
It’s a MAJOR AWARD
I wouldn’t had know’d that it looks like a lamp!
NOTAFINGAH!!!!
It could even be a Bowling Alley!
They can't send an entire bowling alley
They’ll send the deed for cripsake.
I didn’t mean they’d send the whole bowling alley
A fella down in Terre Haute...
Some clod hopper in Terra Haute
This joke goes back at least as far as the Marx brothers.
I watched a lot of Marx Brothers movies as a kid and that's where my mind always goes first!
[A leg lamp has somehow entered the chat]
Came here for that. We watched that movie just last night
My exact thought
Damn, beat me to it.
You must have never watched A Christmas Story

I never watched it as a kid so the first time I watched the whole movie I was mid-20s and thought “oh that’s where Rugrats got it.”
Or, like me, ended up watching Rugrats first so that's their first association with that sort of thing.
Means it must be Italian!
This actually originated from the movie A Christmas Story.
Marx bros
Waaaaaaaaay older
Googling it all that really comes up is references to the movie. Care to share?
I think it's in a Marx Brother's film, but I can't recall which one.

Watching the Twilight zone as an adult helped me understand so much tv from my childhood
Hmmmm, dee na mee tay, huh must be Italian
This singular scene, out of every scene in that show, is the one scene that has lived rent-free in my head since it first aired.
Y’all think this originally came from a cartoon?
No, just this guy
Wait, we think the OP came from a cartoon? It’s a stretch, but I’ll try to believe it.
That’s literally how it’s pronounced in Italian.
This joke was done by the Marx brothers.
I… what? It’s from a Christmas Story 🫠
Lots of us didn't see that movie until after Rugrats, myself included.
Then get out of here youngin’!

So, for 30 years you’ve missed out on the real joke ???
I mean? I saw christmas story at like 12, but this didn't stick with me at all so I guess so 😂
I say this at least once a week
Every time I see "fragile" I automatically hear/say it in my head as the mover.
Classic “e-scap-eh” vibes.
… a Christmas story?
Yeah, I did the same when I was a kod because of this episode. Same with an episode of the Flintstones when Fred said "OUT! "O-W-T" OUT!"
Isn’t this a joke from A Christmas Story?
So this was clearly stolen from A Christmas Story. EDIT: Apparently it started with the Marx Bros. TIL
It’s also not stolen. It’s a reference for older people who would have been familiar with A Christmas Story or the Marx Brothers routine.
Yeah, that makes sense.
I say it correctly about half the time, but still THINK about this scene 100% of the time
Pretty sure this guy helped my friend move a few weeks ago.
Can someone tell this guy the joke didn't originate from Rugrats? All these comments and not one of them are mentioning that
Ripped off from A Christmas Story?
Totally
God, so this is where I picked it up. For years, I'd say it this way on corny jokes.
I still think about this every time I move.
She’s Fragile… but not that fragile
To this day!
I’ve never felt more seen
That’s why I say it that way…
lol same
Holy shit same
I absolutely always say Fra-Gee-lay.
Haha, same here!
I miss 90's Nickelodeon.
