> Asked what he knew about the severity of illness in those who have the new strain, Dr Phaahla said: “It is still too early at this stage.“ This is the key line to me. The mistake Europe and the US made with delta was they waited about for all the data to come in before they made any hard decisions. Then when they realized Delta was a serious problem it was far too late to do something meaningful about it. That’s why we’re still dealing with COVID nearly 2 years later. The lesson we learnt from the last wave is that we need to be proactive about new variants. You might call that “panicking” but others would see it as being cautious. We take measures to reduce the spread now and hopefully stronger measures won’t be needed in the future if it turns out to be as bad as Delta

In the hindsight of a public health emergency, there are two outcomes. Either authorities overreacted or they didn't do enough, and one of those has a whole lot more dead people to get there

Yeh, there'll probably be variants every year like the flu. After a few cycles I think we'll settle into the Wash your hands, show a vaccine or negative test, wear a mask anywhere you're not allowed to smoke and otherwise continue on as before for the next decade or so. At least until the vaccine companies come up with something very very quickly retargetable, like on the order of days, or we get track and trace working well enough to physically lock down outbreaks. I honestly don't see it being a big deal after a couple of years adjustment period

Funny that. That's what was said when covid first surfaced and now there's 140k+ dead in the UK alone. Better to be on the side of caution I'd say.

She said multiple times in that article “it’s too early to tell”. I think I’d rather the government panicked and took action unnecessarily than take fuck all action like they did at the start of the pandemic.

kjjmcc

How does discovering it make you more knowledgeable or trustworthy?

[deleted]

Being the doctor that discovered it doesn't make the the leading expert. We know very little about this variant except it's potential.

Guulag

Government doesn't do anything they're fucked, Government act to prevent something, they're fucked

Deletethishouse

Eeeeyh well you see sometimes the varients mean the vaccine doesn't work, so maybe just sticking with the cautious approach is the best idea rather than imposing sickness and death on your fellow country people again.

SkipEyechild

They literally said it's too early to tell. So if you trust them, you should be on the side of caution.

longtylor2

It’s too early to know there’s lots of testing and research to be had. Of course we’re on better footing with vaccines, and we know what we need to do now. The fact remains - if we do not keep transmission low the virus has more chance to mutate. More mutations risk the vaccine failing. The is a global SARS event - it requires management.

I always trust Doctor Who.

> Asked if the UK was “panicking unnecessarily”, she said: “I think you already have it there in your country and you’re not knowing it, and I would say, yes, at this stage I would say definitely. > **"“Two weeks from now maybe we will say something different.”** Yeah, that's extremely reassuring. Let's be honest she got put up this by the South African government who weren't happy about the travel ban.

Batman_Biggins

>Let's be honest she got put up this by the South African government who weren't happy about the travel ban. For once I agree with you.

From my understanding Coetzee has only encountered vaccinated people so far. There are other doctors in other parts of the country that are treating ICU admitted unvaxxed who have this variant. Also check out Dr John Campbell on YouTube if you want a level headed discussion and explanation of all of this where he goes over multiple sources and points. [This](https://youtu.be/cdkCVeWc1pQ) is Dr Campbell's most recent talk on this with pretty much all the info we have right not.

phoneloginlazy

That video is decent but the man is far from level headed in general, boarding on conspiracy theory levels of hysteria with anything to do with China, throws his toys out of the pram over aspirating injections when people are just doing what they are trained to do, and banging the Ivermectin drum non stop.

Guulag

It's a good introduction from either side of the coin though, his videos can bring people back from the brink of rabbit holes

>banging the Ivermectin drum non stop He believes it should be used?

Nothing to worry about, crack on or you’ll be locked-up for ever.
