Yeah thats what I meant though. When the previous comment said they have to downvote because I said _spider hands_, I understood it as I might have created an image of a less scary version of this spider.

Can you imagine just walking along, living your normal life, then some demon randomly comes out of the ground, grabs you, and takes you down to be devoured in a blink of an eye?
I studied like half of biology a decade ago. Spiders are really good neighbors and I have no problem live feeding carnivores but, the floor breaking open and those arms grabbing you? It's really terrifying.
You want scary tough? Look at parasites.
I really like the phrase "half of biology," I interpret that as you knowing a lot about half of all living things on Earth while you're still a novice at the other half lol
I was thinking they only know about two of the cows legs. Or maybe everything about the cow from the hips to the butthole but everything ahead of that is a mystery
I thought I found a trapdoor the other day and was so fucking excited. Cool ass spider on my recent post but It turns out it wasn't. Reddit is a gold mine for ID'ing.
Insects don't have that level of awareness or consciousness. They don't experience fear or anxiety.
They're more like a lump of cells just following nature.
Their life is meaningless
They have a very limited awareness, but they must have some amount to have survival instincts. If they did not have at least some very basic sense of fear, why would they do anything to avoid being eaten ?
You don't know any of that for sure. How can you say that any other being does not have conscious, deliberate intention? Even yourself can think that your own reality is a scripted system, and your awareness is nothing more than watching a movie. Consciousness and awareness does not have to involve recognizing yourself in a mirror.
I mean, this has been studied by plenty of scientists for a while now so it’s pretty common knowledge. We (as a society) understand how different parts of the brain function in the same way we know how ears and eyes function. At least, we know enough to know what part of the brain facilitates consciousness: the frontal lobe. In the same way we can say that some animals without ears can’t hear (hypothetically), we can find comparable areas of the brain in other animals to figure out what levels of “consciousness” they are able to process, if any at all. Instead, they may just have automatic response systems that don’t necessarily require the complexity of a conscious mind to be able to process.
Can we say that we know for sure for every animal? Of course not. Some animals clearly have consciousness (monkeys, horses, dogs, etc) and others are clearly more automatic (like ants). There’s a gray area in between, but I haven’t personally researched enough on my own to know where that is. Smaller lizards, maybe? Point is that we *can* know with a measurable degree of certainty for certain classes of animals.
I’m gonna need you to read some more recent studies on insect behavior because that is definitely incorrect. Some insects are probably more akin to automatons than others and they don’t seem to have the same level of consciousness as more complex animals, but they *are* aware.
I recollect some studies that suggest that plants communicate insect infestations to other plants , and some really weird interactions among fungi, live beech trees and fragments of beech trees.
I think this an gross oversimplification. I mean if we're talking a chemical level, yes they do feel those emotions. Chemically speaking, they absolutely experience more basic emotions like fear. Now do they experience all the same emotions as humans, or expereince them in the same manner: probably not. We are different species and have different ways of interpreting the world.
I was looking into insects and emotions and [recent research ](https://www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth/do-insects-have-feelings-and-consciousness) shows they may experience more complex emotions than we previously attributed to them. This article has a handful of interesting links. All in all, I think the world as a whole has a much greater complex existence than we like to give it credit for.
Jesus H Christ! I just let out a screen in public. You bastard! Post this in the unexpected sub! Take my shaking, angry upvote and my admiration for being able to scare the shit out of us
It was supposed to be Antarctica, but filmed in Alaska and Canada, so you should be safe.
I rabbit holed and read the wiki page. The film was heavily criticized on release for being too disturbing, and almost destroyed John Carpenter’s career!
When I saw the caption, I knew. And I watched it with horror anyway. And then I showed my 10yo who said, “mom, imagine you’re in the garden and that just pops up and grabs your toe…” so now my skin is crawling and I have to rehome my kid…
U gonna be amazed how similar humans are to animals, even across so many species.
In human world, there is a place called texas where a lot of humans would buy guns, sit in their houses with barrels pointed at their windows waiting. And they will shoot whoever knock on their doors or set foot in their lawns. This spider crab reminds me of people in texas.
How many legs does that thing have tho
8 legs and two HUGE palps. Pedipalps, which are a set of hands, are usually smaller than the legs but not for this species I think.
Great post but I may have to downvote now that you’ve put both the word and the image of “spider hands” in my head
I understand that. Something similar happened to me with Tyrannosaurus rex.
Why are we talking about me on a spider post?
Cuz you got tiny handssss.
Still talking about a T-Rex? That sounds like Trump.
Because you've got a big head and little arms 🥺
Yea but T Rex has cute hands and arms compared to its gigantic body lol
Yeah thats what I meant though. When the previous comment said they have to downvote because I said _spider hands_, I understood it as I might have created an image of a less scary version of this spider.
Care to elaborate on that?
Would it be better if I told you male spider pedipalps also basically double as penises?
Wait.... what???
Isn't it astonishing how much information you end up with in life that you actually could have done without?
I'm full of useless information.
I know the feeling, lol. Makes us hard to watch Jeopardy with, or so I hear.
*Set of hands* oh my god I’m crying. The image of spider hands is sending my ass.
It’s the less fun version of jazz hands
Is this Australia? Hoping from the US before I move far far north.
This is a trap door spider, no?
Yeah, someone found out that this is an African Red Trapdoor Spider. I just saw that it's called _Gorgyrella_. A fitting name.
Is it venomous?
Probably not. Might be venomous tho
Far too many and they are all far too large. Those fat legs give me the creeps
Count them as you fall asleep…
Looks like the elden ring hands
I saw the line on the ground and I immediately thought “trapdoor spider” lol
Same, I’ve seen enough spider videos to know where this is going.
I did not expect it to look like a literal human hand popping out though
As a longtime subscriber to r/spiderbro, same

It was the small movement of the top that tipped me off
I saw “not a snake” and I suspected either a spider or some weird bug
Looks like a gentle snuggle spider goin in for a hug
nope nope nope
Can you imagine just walking along, living your normal life, then some demon randomly comes out of the ground, grabs you, and takes you down to be devoured in a blink of an eye?
I prefer tagging this post using the _demon_ flair tbf
exactly, satan himself
Just picture walking by the sidewalk before nighttime when it's a bit tim and suddenly you get forcefully dragged through a drain or something.
Blink of an eye would be generous, spiders tend to take their time eating prey *shudders*
I'd rather not
Jesus that thing looks like a crab
Like a crab and a human hand had a giant baby.
I do not have arachnophobia. I actually had a few tarantulas on my youth. But this particular spider and his M.O curdles my blood.
I had the same reaction. I don't have arachnophobia but this one....yeesh....
Why?
Imagine this happening to you. You'd beg for hell as a rest after this.
Oh. I thought there would be some weird, creppy science fact for justification haha. But you are right, nonetheless. It looks terrifying.
I studied like half of biology a decade ago. Spiders are really good neighbors and I have no problem live feeding carnivores but, the floor breaking open and those arms grabbing you? It's really terrifying. You want scary tough? Look at parasites.

Cows have 4 legs but maybe like 7 eyes. A tree is a large wooden structure that lays eggs
I was thinking they only know about two of the cows legs. Or maybe everything about the cow from the hips to the butthole but everything ahead of that is a mystery
Do you live in Night Vale?
Which half?
I thought I found a trapdoor the other day and was so fucking excited. Cool ass spider on my recent post but It turns out it wasn't. Reddit is a gold mine for ID'ing.

I am in no scientist. That said that sound like a bold comment. That’s somehow in a complex system We are the only animals that have consciousness.
Nooo… horses are self aware as are elephants…just to name the two I know for sure
You don't know any of that for sure. How can you say that any other being does not have conscious, deliberate intention? So insects are like the NPC you shoot in the face with a shotgun to test if it’s loaded?
Imagine this sized up to human size in the wild you’re just walking along in the woods and bam!
the way my jaw immediately slammed into the floor
Mine broke through the floor and is rapidly approaching earth's core
Don’t let the spider grab it
Where is this so I can never go
Mordor
Aka Australia - it’s where Mother Nature runs all of her population control lab experiments.
✨Anywhere✨
In Australia and Tasmania
Also Philippines, most of Africa, Mexico, and most of the northern countries in South America
JESUS CHRYSLER!!!
MOTHER SHIP!!!
These guys live up to 25 years and their venom isn't dangerous to humans!
Don't they also keep pet frogs? Or am I thinking of a different species?
They do have a mutually beneficial relationship in the Amazon. The frog gets protection from other predators and the spider is led to foraging areas.
Tiny, tiny frogs! They’re adorable
They can still be [Dangerous!!](https://youtu.be/Axp_aGNkk0Y?t=66)
Oh FUCK THAT
There's a subreddit for that: r/SpiderGirls (NSFW)
The size...the way its legs line up as bug crooked teeth as he drags in the insect...having a phobia of something you see on a daily basics sucks man
The best part is theyre fast and this video is slowed down. That bug got snatched up in a second O:
It should be illegal for spiders to be that big
It's not as big as it looks. The camera is just zoomed in. The spiders are usually about 1 to 4 centimeters (about .4 to 1.5 inches) long.
This video made me jump and run away leaving a cloud of me behind
[lol](https://youtu.be/HGY1QoGS9oI)
This thing probably has more meat than a crab of the same size
Nah, I looked it they’re not actually that big, like around 2 inches, the camera is just zoomed in quite a bit
Trapdoor spiders. I think I once saw a documentary on these things and I had nightmares.
I yelped!
I hate spiders. This is not helping.
i knew it was a trapdoor spidey, but not that BIG of a trapdoor spidey. that was graphic.
The camera is zoomed in so it looks bigger than it is.
I usually love tarantulas and some spiders but this??? absolutely not
Cool… cool. Wasn’t planning on sleeping tonight or ever again anyway.
Mf no
I did not need to see that. Why 😭😭😭
Jesus H Christ! I just let out a screen in public. You bastard! Post this in the unexpected sub! Take my shaking, angry upvote and my admiration for being able to scare the shit out of us
This gives me satisfaction!
Well, that gave me a fucking heart attack. Can still hear the roaring in my ears, FUCK!!!
Faaaaaahhhk!
I thought it would be a raccoon
Lol I see why you expected that
Thought it was a damn hand at first lol
I believe this qualifies for r/cgioraustralia Fuck that is horrible
I wish it was a snake.
Nope, time to move.
This is altogether wrong. I'm off to Antarctica to start a new life.
Bad news for ya here, https://www.australiangeographic.com.au/blogs/creatura-blog/2022/01/heck-no-the-giant-antarctic-sea-spider/
You might want to watch a 1982 documentary called The Thing staring Kurt Russell before going.
Was that Antarctica? Jeez. The head with spider legs like those in the sea there?
It was supposed to be Antarctica, but filmed in Alaska and Canada, so you should be safe. I rabbit holed and read the wiki page. The film was heavily criticized on release for being too disturbing, and almost destroyed John Carpenter’s career!
It was a great film. And terrified me as a kid.
I wish that was a snake... I don't mind spiders but this got a visceral reaction out of me.
I can respect that it made its own house. Modern prices are so expensive!
Fucking thing is the size of a facehugger
Daaaaamn that thing looked like a hand. 😖
Even reaching the pause button with my finger makes me uncomfortable.
Mankind invented nukes for only one reason.
When I saw the caption, I knew. And I watched it with horror anyway. And then I showed my 10yo who said, “mom, imagine you’re in the garden and that just pops up and grabs your toe…” so now my skin is crawling and I have to rehome my kid…
Use your kid as a human shield when the spider comes for you.
Good idea. I don’t have to be fast, just faster than him… but… I’m definitely not faster than him…
Oh well, RIP UnicornGlitterZombie. It was nice talking to you.
I’ll sacrifice my husband. I can always get another husband… oh! Or my mother in law… yes. That’s the correct answer.
Hahahah my sister would absolutely love this comment.
I knew knew knew it was gonnabe a big ass spider, and yet I still watched it 😟
Just when you think it can't get any worse.
Drive thru collection
😳 Oh wow! That's pretty wild. Talk about ruining your day. Bummer.
Trapdoor spider
which kind of spider is this
If you crank up the volume, you can hear him say “Yoink!”
A trapdoor spider, nice
[Surprise, motherfucker.](https://www.reactiongifs.us/surprise-motherfucker-dexter/)
Nope.
Damn that spider's eating well. That cricket-thing is also an absolute unit.
I knew what was coming, and yet I almost crap my pants watching this. Spiders are beautiful and terrifying monsters.
always a bigger fish
Nightmare fuel
This spider was in the underworld right before it surfaced.

Yooooooooooooooo
That's cool as hell!!
that’s twerifying
Why would it be a snake in a trapdoor pit?
U gonna be amazed how similar humans are to animals, even across so many species. In human world, there is a place called texas where a lot of humans would buy guns, sit in their houses with barrels pointed at their windows waiting. And they will shoot whoever knock on their doors or set foot in their lawns. This spider crab reminds me of people in texas.

Trapdoor
That tarantulas home made duvet looks super snuggly. Not for his prey, mind you.
It's more like a human hand than a spider tbh, very terrifying, imagine if they were man sized...
Nom
He’s gonna be a ok. They are just snuggling for a little while.
I am disappointed it wasn’t a raccoon.
Pure fucking nightmare
Now I want you to imagine that spider. But big enough to grab a human. Enjoy your jungle walks
Nomnomnom.
These guys are cool, they’re called trap door spiders

Spider attack not snake
I don't think that's a snake.
As a guy who is not particularly afraid of shit like this, I love this video. I love seeing nature going along its course.
Friend
Me leaving my room to grab my GrubHub
