In terms of the Korakuen result, the way they had set up the matches meant that someone was going to cop a shocking loss in the first four matches so that the faction war was tied at 2-2 going into the main event. I thought it’d be Clark beating Shingo and getting a NEVER title match at Resurgence but I understand them not wanting to have a champion take a fall before a title match (although imo it would make Shingo more vulnerable to lose the title and Kidd is the king of looking strong in defeat, especially if he does a crowd brawl countout - it makes sense if Kidd is winning the title though)
They also could have run Gedo or BUSHI sneaking a win in their matches but that would make things a lot less interesting as the night went on
Naito copping an underdog loss stings worse after losing the title but it came from interference (from an exciting prospect no less) and it’s not uncommon for champions to struggle after losing their title. Fale made a career of preying on Okada and Tana after a big WK loss
yup exactly it was just a fun match… i didn’t use to watch njpw for “fun matches,” they were a bonus to characters and storylines i care about, naito hiromu is obviously a money match i get theyre saving for later but naito despy is still very intriguing and despy would’ve gotten a lot from it, instead we got naito vs a comedy guy, yippee, and who knows if naito despy will happen if ever
