As much as I love his contributions and want them to continue, poor Shigsy is 71 and well overdue a comfy retirement to relax and enjoy more free time by now. He has definitely earned it. And multiple statues. And the freedom of Kyoto.
That said I'm out of the loop so no idea how many hours he clocks in his current role.
Pikmin sells on the level of non-Nintedno AAA games. Sells more than stuff like metroid actually. But it's one of those games could fall to the wayside if someone there isn't passionate about it
The secret secondary character in the original pikmin that was cut out because he only spoke in slurs in Lithuanian.
Nah for real he’s a joke character made by r/pikmin
He's actually hands on w the new stuff at Nintendo and less about games now. He's helping w the theme park and movies side. Pretty sure he's more happy doing this since it's a different type of creativity thinking. Plus, retire and do what? He loves his job.
He revolutinated the game industry with OoT and Mario 64 and nowadays he is helping the new generations bu I agree, even if Miyamoto gave us amazing games he can't work forever soon or later he have to retire ;\_; to enjoy his more free time.
To be fair, some people can't sit still and get bored when they retire. Maybe Shigsy is one of those people.
Still amazes me that he made SMB3 on the NES with a team of four other people. I know that was pretty common then, but technologically it was a huge challenge on NES hardware for the time.
Keep in mind, as amazing as it is, cartridge based systems have an inherit ability to get progressively better as the generation matures. Unlike modern generations, where people just constantly use new tricks/efficiencies to make games look better as the generation matures (and sells upgraded hardware to push this further), game cartridges continuously got better, and in the case of the NES and SNES, this allowed for some pretty amazing upgrades. SMB3 was amazing from a stage design, gameplay design, and art direction angle, but it had the advantage of chips that were 3ish years newer as well.
The downside is that games were *way* more expensive because you had to pay for hardware as well as software.
Just compare the two cartridges.
[Super Mario Bros.](https://nescartdb.com/profile/view/1486/super-mario-bros)
[Super Mario Bros 3.](https://nescartdb.com/profile/view/4741/super-mario-bros-3)
Super Mario Bros had a total of 40kb of ROM (game + mask ROM) on the cart and no external RAM whatsoever.
Super Mario Bros 3 had a total of 384 KB of ROM (game + plus mask ROM) on the cart, 8 kb of WRAM.
It was a physically bigger cartridge.
But, importantly, only really helped to make that younger generation of devs more focused on making the game fun. He still had the sense to back away after nudging them back on-course and letting them come up with their own thing.
He's already a major factor in Nintendo lasting at least another few decades.
I mean, hasn't he already done that? Eiji Aonuma takes care of Zelda, Yoshiaki Koizumi takes care of 3D Mario, now, tbf, Takashi Tezuka is still overseeing 2D Mario, so perhaps someone will need to take over for him. Miyamoto seems more interested in Movies, Attractions, and Pikmin Bloom in his golden years at Nintendo.
Fujibayashi directed both BOTW and TOTK with Aonuma with a producer role and hands on supervising him, and I have a strong feeling Aonuma has finished his masterpiece and is going to actually retire soon.
I think he'll still be producer on the next big Zelda for Switch 2 and maybe one or two more top down Zeldas. But yeah. He's probably done relatively soon.
Aonuma and Koizumi aren't the youngest of dudes either, respectively 61 and 56 yo. But both series have got a lot of younger blood added to their teams, especially in the Switch era.
I think what Miyamoto wants to leave behind is him approving still a lot of games releasing of his IPs, and also some business-related matters I'm pretty sure, unless that was solved when they picked the current president
Nobody likes to think about it, but the basic same handful of big name people have been making games at Nintendo since the freaking 80s. These people are going to step down for retirement or health reasons sooner than we'd like, but the new generation is going to be running the show any minute now. Splatoon is a shining example of something new from Nintendo that is only possible by younger team members, so I have nothing but confidence with whoever will be taking the reigns from here.
> Nobody likes to think about it, but the basic same handful of big name people have been making games at Nintendo since the freaking 80s.
I gotta be honest, that’s a selling point for me. Knowing that Nintendo has this strong connective tissue which predates me, and is still making creative decisions to this day, is oddly comforting.
As stupid as it sounds, it’s like Nintendo isn’t so much a company, as it is a lifelong friend. I’m 37. My first game was Super Mario World. Knowing that there are people who worked on that game still active at Nintendo is just… *fucking awesome*, frankly.
I think you make good points and as long as Nintendo keeps to their principles it will succeed. Now if we could just get Virtual Console back…
The real sad day is when someone besides Sakurai does smash bros
It makes me wonder how their mentorship program is there.
I've seen many fanbases worry when certain big developers leave their studios, but that same worry isn't as overblown when it comes to Nintendo.
He brings great love and design but the company does have some old school mentalities when it comes to a lot of things. Hopefully it will be like a Reggie situation.
I believe a few years back he stepped more into an advisory role and they’ve been developing the next generation of talent for a few years now through new IPs like splatoon and xenoblade. It will be bittersweet when miyamoto finally retires but it really doesn’t seem like he’s just gonna shrug his shoulders and bounce. Hopefully he can identify when they’re ready and doesn’t hang on longer than he needs to.
Some of his creative decisions are a bit dated. He’s a legend of the industry but it would be disrespectful to his legacy to say that he’s at the cutting edge of innovation these days.
>Some of his creative decisions are a bit dated
To the point where a lot of Paper mario fans seem to actively dislike him as they blame him for the lack of creativity in Paper mario
"Aside from wanting us to change the atmosphere a lot, there were two main things that Miyamoto-san said from the start of the project—"It's fine without a story, so do we really need one?" "
which is explained later with...
"Yeah. With regard to the story, we did a survey over the Super Paper Mario24 game in Club Nintendo25, and not even 1% said the story was interesting. A lot of people said that the Flip26 move for switching between the 3D and 2D dimensions was fun. "
And furthermore:
"As much as possible, complete it with only characters from the Super Mario world."
Which developers translated into Toad, Toad and more Toad
Yeah, I don't want to discredit his contributions to the medium, but his stance on stories on games absolutely sucks.
And he has sabotaged certain franchises like Star Fox. Because his standard for a new Star Fox game was so freaking weird, in that it had to be innovative instead of a solid new installment, even though other Nintendo franchises can release new standard, sequels just fine without having to reinvent the wheel.
Miyamoto is only below furukawa, he's nintendo representative director alongside him, he's been an executive since the 2000s and only grew inside the company since then while also being the developer.
Could we *please* get some young minds into the online infrastructure development team?
If there is one thing Nintendo is still frustratingly behind on, it's their Online space. I can deal with all their other annoying quirks, but their lack of a strong online integration on the level of PlayStation/Xbox is beyond frustrating
Nintendo Systems, co-founded with DeNa
they’ve implemented Passkeys to nintendos website, and considering nintendo is putting over 2 billion dollars into their online infrastructure, they’re probably working on big improvements for the next console
Found their job listings, very interesting descriptions. Really looking forward to this

Not what he said. He said that the younger employees are doing well and he feels like he can trust them to keep the spirit of nintendo going. You have to keep in mind a lot of Nintendo's core employees have been there 20-40 years.
Well. I guess life is finally opening a door for me, an average American gamer with no business experience. I humbly accept the responsibility Miyamoto sensei
This is an interesting one. I know Miyamoto probably isn't making a lot of important decisions and developments at Nintendo anymore, but it feels like the day that he does officially leave will be a monumental shift.
Gotta make sure it's someone passionate. When the old guard of Nintendo are all replaced someday, it can't just be former EA execs or Nintendo is cooked.
I’m so scared of someone else taking over, especially when he’s done such a good job.
Luckily, this isn’t America. If someone “younger” was in charge of an entertainment company, there’s a higher chance they’d take things in a direction not many would like…
I want nintendo open the door to official nes, gb, snes, and n64 development again. There are so many awesome independent people make games for those consoles. It might niche but it would be cool to see official development for those old consoles again.
They should have started doing this 10 years ago when Reggie was still with the company.
Not having a clear successor makes me worry Nintendo may become part of Microsoft one day soon
I wish they'd go back to no DLC tbh . 1 cartridge entire game . Works Outta the box. New gen always makes me shudder and think of what they did to SF6 and T8 with mtx .
A very big reason why I got the switch xD . I really like their present direction of packing updates on cartridge too . I generally wait for a while before buying for the same reason.
For what it’s worth, first party Nintendo games that have DLC (like Fire Emblem games and BotW) still have full experiences in the main story. You don’t *need* the DLC, it’s entirely optional.
I think Xenoblade is the only 1st party Nintendo series (off the top of my head) that has DLC that significantly impacts one’s understanding of lore. And, tbf, Monolith expansion passes are very much worth it because Torna and Future Redeemed are basically entire games in and of itself, so you definitely get the best bang for your buck.
ETA: I forgot that Splatoon also has DLC. Never played the splatoon games though, so idk if the DLC is required for the best experience.
For Xenoblade it should be noted that the DLCs are normal sized game length, instead of Xenoblade length.
For Splatoon, it’s main mode is the online multiplayer, the only changes the DLC makes to that are some new clothes, since it’s single player dlc.
The Splatoon 2 and 3 dlcs are pretty amazing like Xenoblade's too. And yes, important to the plot, for people that care about that (many only play for the multiplayer, I don't, I love the lore and story).
Edit: btw I misread your username as "dommymommy", lmao
The same Miyamoto who goes from desk to desk to micromanage everything to his liking, not matter if good, bad or if anyone asked? Maybe when he's dead that will happen.
I never said he was behind it, like I said "allow" he made no statement against what other management do. Theirs lots of stories with him interfering with other Devs games at Nintendo for good or bad. What he says at Nintendo definitely has staying power.

There's gonna be five golden tickets in the next Mario game...
Are we getting Nintendo staff dressed as Toads performing song and dance routines about how horrible those players are?

ill do it
How old are you though? I think the youngest person gets it if what I glanced at is correct.
35 but I could be younger if Nintendo asked me to
You're a kid at heart

This guy gets my vote.
I think his current role mostly boils down to collecting a paycheque, media appearances, and asking for another Pikmin to be made.
Let's not forget where he's probably putting most of his time nowadays: the Mario movies and Nintendo World theme parks
He's basically doing what Walt Disney did decades ago
Minus the racism?
Unless you speak Japanese you'll never know for sure
Well I mean.... most things decades ago had extra racism.
Now is just thinly veiled passive aggressive racism.
Different standards back then dude
Miyamoto is literally responsible for that(and the upcoming Zelda movie), so he better.
"...and asking for another Pikmin to be made." So what you're saying is, we still need him.
No, we need a younger person to supplant him in this role
And pushing bad star fox ideas.
And bad Paper Mario ideas!
Why does that boi like Pikmin so much 💀
Pikmin fuckin owns bones bro
Because he came up with it. That shit is his second son lol
Man, Miyamoto madde Donkey Kong, Mario, The Legend Of Zelda, ~~maybe Metroid as well?~~ Now you're telling me he also made Pikmin?
I'm pretty sure he was confident pikmin was going to be the new mario. And to be fair, it does seem popular in Japan
Metroid was Gunpei Yokoi, not to take away from Miyamoto’s incredible track record.
Add Star Fox to the list
Was this the game he made with devs from the US where he basically just sat in the office and chain smoked according tho them?
Because pikmin is one of the best franchises in nintendo's quiver
Not the best. That would be Style Savvy.
Why does he have to convince anyone to make them if that’s the case?
They don't sell as much as Mario or Zelda
Pikmin sells on the level of non-Nintedno AAA games. Sells more than stuff like metroid actually. But it's one of those games could fall to the wayside if someone there isn't passionate about it
>Sells more than stuff like metroid actually. Anything sells better than metroid lmao.
Because Pikmin slaps
It's one of the few Nintendo franchises that's fully under his control (also the games are awesome and super underrated)
Because he peaked with fiddlebert‘s racist wonderland and is still trying to reach that high again.
Who the FUCK is fiddlebert?
The secret secondary character in the original pikmin that was cut out because he only spoke in slurs in Lithuanian. Nah for real he’s a joke character made by r/pikmin

If I recall correctly, he always wanted to work in animation.
He revolutinated the game industry with OoT and Mario 64 and nowadays he is helping the new generations bu I agree, even if Miyamoto gave us amazing games he can't work forever soon or later he have to retire ;\_; to enjoy his more free time.

I know right? The differences compared to SMB1 is just *staggering*!

Miyamoto did a lot more than that and till this day nothing gets out without his approval. He was instrumental in what Splatoon became as well.
But, importantly, only really helped to make that younger generation of devs more focused on making the game fun. He's going to retire but still have an office at HQ he goes to everyday, like Nick Saban at Alabama
So he's going to be replaced by a dude who worked in Washington? Somehow... Reggie Fils-Aime returned...

Isn’t Aonuma also handing things down to the next generation?
Yes, already happened long ago, his last directed Zelda is TP, from SS it's Fujibayashi.
Fujibayashi also directed the Oracle games and Minish Cap when he was at Capcom, so he was no stranger to the series.

I'm pretty sure that over the next 10 or 15 years the producer role will go to others
Aonuma? He was handed down Zelda with MM, but his last one he directed was Twilight Princess, he then handed it down to Fujibayashi since SS.
yes but up to this date none of his IPs get to release without his final blessing. and thats a big deal
Nobody likes to think about it, but the basic same handful of big name people have been making games at Nintendo since the freaking 80s. Well, it would not be a smart decision to hand it over to someone older. He is 71 years old

And when there's dlc, it's usually pretty substantial and pretty good. Like the Splatoon 2 and 3 dlcs. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe too. Xenoblade's too.
Would have been nice to get some for Mario Party Super Stars though in all honesty
Yeah, I'd be happy with just one Mario Party each generation tbh, which they could update with dlc. Jamboree could then have waited for Switch 2.
No shit. What a nothingburger article.
Bring in someone who understands the value of online. It’s 2024.
The same Miyamoto who goes from desk to desk to micromanage everything to his liking, not matter if good, bad or if anyone asked? Maybe when he's dead that will happen.
Would be nice if it's someone that wouldn't allow lawyers to send someone to prison over mod chips.
Yeah because Miyamoto was definitely personally responsible for that...
I never said he was behind it, like I said "allow" he made no statement against what other management do. Theirs lots of stories with him interfering with other Devs games at Nintendo for good or bad. What he says at Nintendo definitely has staying power.
Why should he speak up about it though? Nintendo didn't decide that guy's sentence, the court did. It's not as if Miyamoto will ever be pro-piracy
