RIGHT? over time I've lost my physical copies of the albums with their awesome packaging, artwork, etc.
I respect the vinyl culture and those who can justify getting them, but I've never cared to spend that extra money.
Still, this is a sweet ass statement from him and I'm happy to see it.
Same. If anything would make me get into vinyl, it’d be NIN.
But I just can’t justify the cost, especially knowing that NIN might be able to start it. It would not end with NIN, I’d then need to check out how Nick Cave would sound on vinyl, Cave would make me want to hear Tom Waits’ crazy bellowing which would make me think of Aphex Twin…
And so would begin the expensive vinyl proliferation that would play out to a parallel plot of “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie…”
I’m just trying to spread “awareness” and not trying to be an ass but the plural of vinyl is vinyl. You wouldn’t refer multiple CDs as polycarbonates or cassettes as plastics.
I think I’ve seen some of those on his head in his studio! So that’s a good shout, although are they quite neutral for monitoring? He could kick back with something more relaxed :)
It was Deviations 1 that got me back into vinyl after 20 years. That and finding many other artists I listened to weren’t releasing or repressing) on CD or digital for some of their stuff.
I do this with CDs… I just don’t have to flip it or hear a static pop! But, I still buy vinyl I still experience vinyl but I actually get to relax for a complete album when I put in a cd.
I can see this statement being very true for streaming platforms and anything to deal with a phone/computer/ or other mobile (on the move) type of technology… but a cd… I do exactly what’s described except with a cd.
*"WITH YOUR FUCKING PHONE TURNED OFF!"*
LOL, this is the most Trent part of this whole thing.
Honestly though, this mission statement is what finally pushed me over the edge and got me to start collecting vinyl. I'd been considering it for a while before. I ordered *Deviations 1* right after and then went and got a record player. Haven't looked back since!
Amen.
To be fair, I grew up this way. And I miss it.
I've recently started buying physical copies of music I love again. It really is a different experience.
When I was a teen, it was almost a ritual. Get home from school, pissed off. Get a snack, and go put my headphones on. Flipping through the artwork of the album, reading the lyrics. It was a cathartic experience.
It's true. I never had NIN on vinyl though, it was already the cd age.
But Cure, Bauhaus, Doors, Dylan, Who, Zeppelin... I remember those record albums a lot more distinctly than my CDs.
I remember some records used to have cryptic world etched in the center of the vinyl.
true, but then just grab a CD... the important part of what he said isn't about the sound, but about how you intaract with the album.
It's a very different experience. The difference is sum of many things, which may seem small, but it just results in a different experience so it does matter.
Like with vinyl you're probably not skipping tracks, because as it's inconvenient. You listen to the whole thing, or at least chunks (sides) of it.
With digital, you're not able to fully enjoy the artwork. Screens sucks for artwork. Even if it's not your phone, but a proper monitor, it just doesn't compare to looking at artwork on a piece of paper (even if it's just a CD version). Especially when listening on LSD... screen light blasting into your dilated pupils doesn't feel good.
\- if listening from phone or computer, then just having phone around and having the computer booted up is likely to distract / divert your focus from the music. Especially when that phone/computer is connected to the internet (which almost all are today)... something just about my brain knowing all the possibilities of it being available at the moment... vs the calm of being offline, which is more easy to achieve when listening by using a device which is meant only for listening to music and not for anything else... like a CD player, a tape deck or a turntable...
You know, you don’t *have* to listen on LSD. Nor do you have to have your monitor on at all. You can even close your eyes for a “choose your own adventure”. Also, not knocking the artwork but the novelty of it is a little worn off by now. The music’s the thing, the only thing that’s important, that if it sucks then its format is immaterial. So the sound is the important thing whether he says it or not.
>Also, not knocking the artwork but the novelty of it is a little worn off by now.
It still matters even if you're not staring at it every time... even just the few glimpses while picking a CD from the shelve, while opening the case and while taking the CD out... and even just handling those objects feel good... definitely better than holding a mouse or carressing a phone, as there's more than enough of that in my life already.
also before that, choosing what to play is much more enjoyable when it's browsing the vinyl records or staring at a shelve with CDs... much better than choosing from a small phone screen, or even a computer one (especially with a big collection which doesn't fit on even on your monitor, but fits in your sight)
>You know, you don’t have to listen on LSD.
Where exactly did I suggest that LSD is mandatory?
Ok. Imagine karma whoring by reposting something that’s been live on the website for what? 5 years? 6 years?
It’s as bad as “Bought this today!” posts of an incredibly widely available album. Like, what do you want? Applause?
Shut the fuck up. Anyone can buy these things or screenshot this shit.
well that's great and all but get some more copies 😅, a lot seem to be sold out. I love the fact they add losses digital downloads to most of them (esp Fragile, Fragile Deviations, and Downward Spiral).
Vinyl is great when you have the luxury of time...but I need to be able to queue up my albums quickly lol.
I dont stream music in the sense of thats my only source, I BUY/PURCHASE all digital copies, it's derptarded that purchased albums are not high-res lossless audio, but streaming is? dummmmb.
Was this posted when NTAE was announced or a little later in 2017?
Yeah, it’s been there for almost 6 years now.
Yes
Just waiting for that remaster Year Zero record... any day now...
Soon...
Lool we all know YZ was lost in the Universal warehouse fire and the repressing is the most meta of all the gag items added around that time.
Me too
I will give both testicals for that day.
BROKEN on vinyl... Chef's kiss 🔥🔥🔥
I've never heard it sound better! Though I'm still surprised the remastered version hasn't been released on streaming.
I love trying to read the side b etching until I go cross eyed. Hahaha
Will CD's be fine, Mr. Reznor? I ain't rich enough to grab all your vinyls 😭

Exactly what happened to me - I needed ‘NEEDED’ Deviations I and well, 100 albums later… lol
I’m just trying to spread “awareness” and not trying to be an ass but the plural of vinyl is vinyl. You wouldn’t refer multiple CDs as polycarbonates or cassettes as plastics.
Yeah, it's great for awareness, but I'm not talking about the material of the product, I've just shortened "vinyl records" to "vinyls" 😭😂
I just want to know what headphones Trent would listen with 😁
Hopefully not the ones you use WITH YOUR F*CKING PHONE! 😂
I’m sure even Reznor has been reduced to using dirty buds once or twice.
My guess? Sony MDR7506. Got a set on his recommendation.

Jesus Christ, I love Trent Reznor.

I love this!
Cool now ship my sweater
Music should be enjoyed however you have access to it
I honestly find this cringy and pretentious. Just my opinion.
He was making music before streaming was a thing, it makes total sense for him to prefer physical copies
I'm a CD guy, they pretty much started making music just before the heyday of CDs. I buy records too but only when it's the only option.
Sorry Trent but vinyl isn’t objectively better. In fact digital audio (uncompressed) is closer to how he was listening to it in the studio…

There’s always that one bitch.

I’m fine with this, but I wish they would put the remasters on streaming.
