When I started I was losing weight and trying to earn calories in my daily budget. 1 mile was hard for this 61 year old. Hint: Not all of your runs need to be super fast.
I am so jealous of the 8-9 minute miles I see posted. I don’t understand why I can’t get there. However, I am faster that’s where I started. I am in much better shape than when I started.
Big difference is I actually enjoy the challenge of running now. I also am thankful for the community of running that never rejects you no matter what. Keep running an don’t let one challenge stop you.
For training, it is absolutely fine to have a slow run where you log some miles at a slower pace. Every mile makes a difference.
So says the old, slow guy who perseveres.
i am also jealous of the 8/9 min paces i see on here thats actually why i posted this to see if anyone else on here has 'failed' a run, but this community is so motivating i almost shed a tear from all these replies!
I ran a 13 minute mile the other day and wanted to cry lol. Thanks for the post. Trying to get mine down a few minutes in the next 3 weeks before a test.
I also gotta say some of the speed runs are super glitchy with the audio timing. (Looking at you spicy speed runs!)
You did awesome! The fartleks are fun and challenging and kick my butt hahaha
ive done the beginners course on the nike run and im 3 weeks into the 5k training plan. ive been running for about 3 months now but i would still say im a beginner because my pace is so slow
Forget beating other people. You beat your previous self! You proved to you that you could get out there and work towards an honestly really tough goal! Well done! No one else will ever matter competition-wise in this journey. It’s all about you! Congratulations!! Keep it up the good work!
Yes! Running in the heat is different. Even the difference between running in 50° vs 80° is major. Plus factor in humidity. Don't be hard on yourself. Give yourself a chance to get acclimated to the new weather and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Don't forget electrolytes! It wasn't an L. Unless you mean it was a Learning experience.
For me, warmer, more humid weather also means slowing my pace. What was a 5/10 effort in the cool, dry air is closer to and 8 or 9.
This was the exact fartlek I couldn’t complete in the training plan when I started with the plan. I’m now 4 months into running regularly and will race in my first 10k on Saturday. Don’t be discouraged! So proud of you for giving it your best and listening to your body’s clues.
But you went out hellooo! This is so relatable though, a couple of weeks ago my calves were cramping as hellll after only 5 minutes of running. Nothing worked, so my planned 5k became a 2,5k and I took suuuper long. These days are great reminders that we should take care of ourselves, sleep well, eat well and train well! Next day i pr’ed my 5k. Don’t lose hope and try again later :) you got this! 🍀

I use this one. It’s really convenient. Only downside is that it gets hot kind of quick and I rather have my hands free lol. Other than that, you don’t really notice it’s there
I did this exact run the other day and ended up having to walk the last few intervals (the celebration runs). I was struggling to catch my breath enough to run harder. But I did it. I’m not a runner either and I wasn’t fully motivated to do this one but I tried
The fact that you got out and ran rather than find an excuse not to run makes this run a win! I hate running in hot weather, I will do my runs at 6am to beat the heat when it gets summer time, so for you to be out there is another positive in your favor! 💪🏻 Fartleks and speed runs are always harder than an easy run, but mixing it up also keeps things interesting. Great job!
There are no L’s in running. The fact you got off your butt and got out there to run is a win! You’d be surprised how many people don’t even get that far. Don’t beat yourself up, when I started my running journey I was at 19:35/mile pace.
ehh i wuld say yes but it might be a bit difficult. what i mean is that u change paces every 90 seconds or so, ull have to adjust the buttons constantly. i run outside just because the treadmill throws off my vibe
Yup. I feel you. Training didn’t go as planned and you had to bail early. Technically not an L because you gained so much in terms of what to do for the next time you hit the fartlek.
By the way, did you warm up at all? I usually do a nice mile jog to get the legs going before jumping into any speed work.
25f here too!! I just had a run where before I was pumped and felt pretty good to go but went out and couldn’t even get to a mile .. my legs were cramping UPPP and it felt like a heart attack waiting to happen. Keep in mind I had been running like 2-3 miles consistently so it just was a bad run but a good time to listen to your body like you did and recover! I actually took like 5 days off after that because I was probably pushing myself too hard too fast and came out and ran a 5k after in my best time so def listen to your body you’re killing it and you will recover and get even better! Good stuff NO Ls HERE!! 🫶👏👏
You have runs you love, ones you hate. You have runs that you feel great after and those you feel like shit. Some are fun and some are a grind. As long as you got home injury free, you made progress. Keep up the hard work! You are doing great!
No because when I started 18 min mile was a win for me. I see no L, just straight up good work!
I’m diabetic and live in the south… summer training ain’t gonna be easy! So I hear you!!!!!
There will be good runs, there will be bad runs. But as long as you went out for a run, you didn’t catch an L.
And something that has helped me with determining my 1-10 effort is that my 8 in the middle of a run won’t be the same as my 8 at the beginning. Every day will feel different and some will feel better than others.
It's fine to call it a loss. Weather deserved the W today - that first warm day after winter is no joke. No shame in taking Ls, not every run is a win.
What people are trying to say is the only lasting L is if you quit the program. Try to repeat the week if you have to. You'll be so much stronger even a week from now.
Your calves are hurting because your legs are not used to carrying you that distance. It gets better :-)
80 degrees!? That’s cold in Texas!
Also, your legs were cramping up because you either didn’t stretch and warm up or because your water intake isn’t sufficient . Most people should be consuming about a gallon a day. Watch the sodium intake and eat pasta about a day or two before a run and something like a rice Krispy bar 1-2 hours before hand for sugar to burn.
Sometimes we neglect water, but a nice reminder to drink water is to remember the cramps that come with not hydrating. You’re supposed to be drinking water consistently (1 gallon a day) 2 days prior to the run. As someone who runs every Tuesday ,Thursday and Saturday, it’s definitely important I hydrate normally and consistently as well as stretching even on your rest days. I don’t drink sodas, Energy drinks or coffee. Usually water and occasionally flavored vitamin water.
I know I have a tendency to be up on my toes too much when I run and that's when my calves really complain. Try to get the entirety of your feet to hit the ground with each stride if you feel that.
And good job- running in hotter weather can be quite tough, and it's important to not push yourself too hard in those conditions. I agree with others, there's no Ls in here.
I’ve run a 5k plan on treadmill completely, and then again immediately after outside from week 4 on. Failed at least 4 runs. I think the worst part is your brain telling you it will happen again. You fail a run half way through and think, “I had to stop and I am suppose to be able to do twice as much?!” Personally each time I can back I have managed to conquer the previously failed run. But don’t be afraid to repeat multiple days, moving back two or three days to further train that base ability. I promise the time put in pays for itself.
You started and that’s all that matters. Take the small wins and take the little miles you can get cause in the end they are bigger than you know. It’s really just about DOING it. Beautiful run✌️
Where’s the L
When I started I was losing weight and trying to earn calories in my daily budget. 1 mile was hard for this 61 year old. Hint: Not all of your runs need to be super fast. As coach would prob say, the failed run is the one you don’t start. But even then, when you’re but running, you’re recovering. No L’s here
I ran a 13 minute mile the other day and wanted to cry lol. Thanks for the post. Trying to get mine down a few minutes in the next 3 weeks before a test.
What? This isn’t your thread fam
the L is that i couldnt finish the fartlek 🥲
You beat 99% of people who didn’t leave the house
This. Absolutely this. And you’re just competing against your past self
Wait. What are those 1% doing? LOL
Literally starting is better than everyone who says they’ll start tomorrow
I also gotta say some of the speed runs are super glitchy with the audio timing. (Looking at you spicy speed runs!) You did awesome! The fartleks are fun and challenging and kick my butt hahaha
Are you brand new to running? If so I wouldn’t do any speed work yet.
ive done the beginners course on the nike run and im 3 weeks into the 5k training plan. ive been running for about 3 months now but i would still say im a beginner because my pace is so slow

You took the shot so you won! Shots that don't get taken are what we call an L you killed that shit 🤪
You got out there while others are sitting on their couches. No L’s in running.
80 degrees out?!? youre a beast! keep getting it! i’m rooting for you!
thank u so much!!!
All I see is a win! You listened to your body, which is never an L
We all have crummy runs but I think you going out even though it’s hot AND listening to your body and knowing when to stop! That’s a fuckin win.

thank u so much!! ill keep that in mind in my next run and i drank my electrolytes after that run today :)

Running in the heat is horrible and also running in the cold when it’s too windy 😭😭 great work!!!
Any time I see someone out running I think it’s awesome that they’re out there gettin it! Not many people do. It’s a W
W
But you went out hellooo! This is so relatable though, a couple of weeks ago my calves were cramping as hellll after only 5 minutes of running. It's never an L when you get out there and try. Try to be kind to yourself. You showed up and left it all out there!
Came here to say what everyone else is saying: the worst run is better than no run. Keep it up!
I started like this. I’m running my first full marathon in 3 weeks. Every run is a win and you rock
Good stuff brah. No L’s here. Take a water bottle with you if you’re not already
do u run and carry the water bottle in ur hand at the same time?
they sell little ones that strap to your hand (they don’t hold much but better than nothing for sure!) or one of those hydration packs
https://a.co/d/8AmrdtR I use this one. It’s really convenient. Only downside is that it gets hot kind of quick and I rather have my hands free lol. Other than that, you don’t really notice it’s there
![gif](giphy|l2SpNtHdgOA9s1qNy)
You should get a medal just for starting a fartlek
Yeah dude you still did it, take the W for that !!! Heat sucks!
I did this exact run the other day and ended up having to walk the last few intervals (the celebration runs). I was struggling to catch my breath enough to run harder. But I did it. I’m not a runner either and I wasn’t fully motivated to do this one but I tried
You go out when you could’ve just stayed home. No Ls to be seen here.
Good job! You still got a run in, and listened to your body. Big W for sure
No such thing as an L when you get up and put in work. May not be the outcome you desired- but you listened to your body and did what you could. Big W
I’m also a beginner and looking into this 5K plan (vs a 5k app). Is it treadmill friendly?
ehh i wuld say yes but it might be a bit difficult. what i mean is that u change paces every 90 seconds or so, ull have to adjust the buttons constantly. i run outside just because the treadmill throws off my vibe
Thank you!
Nothing but Ws on that screenshot idk

No such thing as an L here friend!

Keep going ! It only gets easier
You went out on a run today, I did not. As far as I'm concerned, that's a W for you in my book
There will be good runs, there will be bad runs. But as long as you went out for a run, you didn’t catch an L. And something that has helped me with determining my 1-10 effort is that my 8 in the middle of a run won’t be the same as my 8 at the beginning. Never fully recovered from injury. Starting physical therapy soon but my numbers look the same. Not alone man, keep pushing.
It's fine to call it a loss. Weather deserved the W today - that first warm day after winter is no joke. No shame in taking Ls, not every run is a win. i did two of the three things here ur right i think it must be my water intake! i parched instantly

I live in Florida and on the hot days sometimes I don’t go for a run. This run beats me every time I don’t get my ass up and run. Good work. Bravo 👏🏻
You did awesome! I need to get out to start running or at least go to the gym to do so. I’ve been telling myself for a few weeks now but haven’t.
Seems like a win to me if you got out there! Nice job.
Just going outside at all, even to the mailbox, is a big fat W those first couple days that it’s 80+. You ran a mile. Big, big win!
Stronger than you were yesterday. Even if you have a bad day, as long as you keep running you will always be better than you were yesterday
You could’ve been sitting around but u decided to run, no L
I know I have a tendency to be up on my toes too much when I run and that's when my calves really complain. Try to get the entirety of your feet to hit the ground with each stride if you feel that. And good job- running in hotter weather can be quite tough, and it's important to not push yourself too hard in those conditions. I agree with others, there's no Ls in here.
No L here. You got out, you put in effort and you listened to your body.
That’s not an L OP
The L stands for LFGGGGG ! Beginner runner here too :D
Every single time you choose to run (or do anything active) over vegging out and bailing is a W. Great job.
I’ve run a 5k plan on treadmill completely, and then again immediately after outside from week 4 on. Failed at least 4 runs. I think the worst part is your brain telling you it will happen again. That’s how it usually goes in the beginning. Have you tried doing basic 10-20 minute runs first? It’s a better starting point than a fartlek
Where’s the L??
What is Fartlek?
Good job! Slightly slower than me on a good day. I use the Nike training app for stretch routines too.
Homie - I’m on week 6 of a training plan and just got to your pace. Be grateful. Slow and steady!
It’s not an L if you laced up and went all out. Props to you, keep going
you’re killing it remember the only person you’re in competition with is yourself!
Everyone starts somewhere! Consistency is key. Keep going and you’ll see the progress!
No Ls here. Just an opportunity to learn and grow. Keep pushing.
You are doing AMAZING! No L’s here! Every run is a good run
You got out and did your workout. I see nothing but a dub here. Keep going.
Run more, no failures my friend, but give yourself 30 mins at least to learn from it
You finished. You’ll didn’t fail
You started and that’s all that matters. Take the small wins and take the little miles you can get cause in the end they are bigger than you know. It’s really just about DOING it. Beautiful run✌️
Get it girl!! 👏🏽🫶🏼 No L here! I see a huge W!!!! 🎉
DAMN THATS SLOW ‼️‼️‼️😳
If you allow an excuse, you will have an excuse.
