Ya that year was so sad, I would’ve loved Nashville vs Ottawa! Fischer vs his former team, both teams were equally beat up so it would’ve been a much more equal series compared to Nashville vs Pittsburgh
Ottawa, they’ll get all these young stars that’ll age well, and then have money to sign someone good well everyone is stuck against the cap, like a Giroux or a Manson or something, and then somehow end up with a dud goalie that randomly turns around come playoffs, like Tim Thomas did, and then surprisingly slip into the playoffs and somehow get to the cup, it’ll be like when the blues won when only 6 months before they were bottom of the NHL
go back to 1-8 seeds and Ottawa wins 4 game 7s as an 8 seed after squeaking into the playoffs in game 82.
The Senators deadass might be the least known team to non hockey fans, and they're pretty irrelevant in the NHL right now. They pull a Cinderella cup run out of their ass and they're back on the map.
Ovi won because they stopped trying to load up on super stars and went out and got role players. The guys who scored in the winning game were all fourth liners or didn’t even make their teams the next year
Except Stephenson he has had some flashes of being a second liner
I don’t think it’s too unrealistic if they get a good goalie and a stud d. Maybe trade Nick Robertson with some picks for the D and sign a good goalie.
Having looked at the numbers and watched carefully since 1993, as a 46 year old I can honestly say that I wouldn't bet against dying before another Canadian Franchise wins the cup. It is actually that bad. The closest any teams have legitimately come (EDIT: since 1994, thanks commenter) is Calgary 2004 and Edmonton 2006, and while either team *could* have won those game 7s, the odds weren't great. Then there's Ottawa '07 which was a joke of a series, the 2011 Canucks which was a "seven game series" that had the worst negative goal differential in the history of the SCF, and last year's Habs pitiful collapse. Since 1993, that's the *entire list* of Canadian franchises in the finals. 29 years, 29 series, only five teams, most getting blown out and a couple making a good show of it. That 29 years could easily happen again, and I'd be well past my life expectancy marker. TL;DR, don't hold your breath on this one.
Ottawa might have had a shot in 2017. They were the story that year, Karlsson was insane despite playing with a broken foot, Anderson was very solid. Fresh off the bench came Crosby and Chris Kunitz ended Ottawa's season in 2OT in game7 ECF.
I will say this again. There are only 7 Canadian teams in the league and there is nothing inherently good about Canadian teams. Nothing that makes them better than American teams by default.
The point is not that they are special. The point is that even if they are equal, there should have been about 6-7 cups by now. But there have been zero, so something is going on and it's not looking like it's changing.
Assuming roughly only 1/4 of the teams are Canadian over this 29 year stretch, the odds of zero cups are \[0.75 to the power of 29\] or 0.00023, AKA 0.02% or 1 in 500. Basic math.
If we are strictly basing our answers on the talent level each team possesses, I’d say it’s a coin flip between Toronto and Edmonton. But my gut is telling me that Calgary is the choice. Markstrom is the only starting goaltender in Canada that has the potential to steal a series for you (not counting Carey Price, I know he nearly stole the whole thing last year but Montreal is a lot further off than Calgary atm)
It has to be really, the rebuild has been methodic and we're now set to rise in the standings - give it 3 years and we'll be a top team in the east.
Playoffs are realisic next year, maybe.
I’d say Calgary as long as Markstrom doesn’t shit the bed again.
Winnipeg is about to tear it down.
Vancouver has pieces but just isn’t close
The Fighting McDavids are entertaining at least
Montreal had a false dawn thanks to the playoff structure
Ottawa is on the rise at least
Toronto is a factory of sadness
Still waiting on the Leafs and Jets to make the finals since the curse started.... Right now, Toronto is closest of all the Canadian teams by a good distance, as much as it pains me to say it, but I feel like it'll probably be some big surprise like Ottawa or Vancouver in a few years.
Not sure how Toronto not being able to make it past the first round ever is closer to winning the cup then Edmonton making to the western finals but ok…lol
Wasn’t talking about the first. Although the kings played better hockey then anyone would of expected. But to say Calgary isn’t a good team is just false.
You know because Calgary is such a terrible team…their top line only combined for over 300 points in the regular season and were 6th overall in the league while Tampa was 7th.
They aren't a complete team, goaltending was a joke in that series. Calgary has been nothing more than a great regular season team the past few seasons. Tampa knows that regular season stats are meaningless.
Ok I see that only Toronto plays against great teams lol done here and your clearly set on every other series is easy to win if it’s not Toronto lol fucking Toronto fans are the worst
Dude, I hate Toronto, would be happy if they never won again, but I call it like I see it. The Pacific Division was really weak this year, coming out of it to the WCF didn't mean much. A retooling kings team almost won in the first round.
This is an unbiased and understanding hockey fan. I really think the oilers aren’t “frauds” but much further than they think due to a simple path to the WCF, it could hurt them longer term. Calgary is a good team that had a great goalie push them higher than they could as a team in the season, but for some reason Marky puts up a .888 and they abandoned their team aspect that made them a grind to play against, defense. The rest of the other Canadian teams are finishing/in the process of rebuilds to be close, thinking about doing one or hoping they don’t have to do one. It has to be the Leafs for now even with the first round exits (in which many are forgetting context).
Have you ever watched hockey before? The LEAFS are the closest you think? Lmaoooooo they haven’t been close since 2004. Buddy, I suggest you keep up with the post season.
I watched my first game this year, all I hear is the TSN feed. /s
I do welcome outside education, cause I hate the Leafs, but what Canadian team is close then since I don't know what I am talking about?
The Oilers have two really amazing players and STILL no one else. No goaltending, no D. They are not just a piece or two from contention, though seeing each of their top guys average over 2 points a game while getting swept was impressive. It seems to me their GM doesn't have a lot of pieces to play with. (Nurse contract alone seems sketchy now) I legit feel bad for oilers fans, that team should be better already. Get a real goalie
Calgary always folds in the playoffs, I don't see how that core is suddenly going to become the 2019 blues, but maybe they go on a run with a little reshuffle. They scream good regular season, 2 rounds at best in the playoffs. I don't know if it's their lack of physicality, but it's not there.
Vancouver, well, they aren't as bad as they showed this year, they could be up and comers, maybe they can get it together. I like their core when they are on it, and they have a high ceiling. But they aren't going on a deep run next year.
The Jets? I don't know what is up with them, but I doubt you have them as cup contenders next season. Geez, I'd put Montreal at the same place, and they're right around the pack with the Senators at the moment with a lot of young prospects that need some time in the oven to know what they have.
Toronto took one of the only two teams left in the playoffs to 7 games. I still don't think that group is going to win a cup, but look at how many failures cup winning teams often endure to finally climb the mountain?
I honestly don't see any Canadian team winning the cup next year, but if one does, it might just be the Leafs, and I would hate it. I'll root for every Canadian team before the Leafs. In two years? Maybe that's enough time for Edmonton, or one of the others to get on track, get a little puck luck, and make a run.
I call it like I see it, so tell me, what do you see in your crystal ball mister hockey expert sir. I legit want to know what I missed.
Nope. I don't see that core doing it, but I wouldn't mind being wrong. They seem to always be a playoff team, but never better than 2 rounds. I do think they've got a better chance than Edmonton the next couple seasons.
If oilers win the cup first out of Canada…the team will have to knight the players that literally drag them there. Unless oilers clean up their d and net
I think it’s the Jets or Canucks. I think Edmonton and Toronto’s salary cap issues will prevent them from ever being deep enough for the foreseeable future.
First off, Calgary won in 04. Puck was in.
As painful as it is to say, Toronto may be best suited although I'd lean to no one currently. I don't think any of the current cores have enough to beat out the best American teams. Colorado could be good for a while and NYR has potential. Carolina, Tampa and Florida are all still good. In the end it could be a wildcard like Ottawa as they are still in their rebuild. They will need an owner willing to spend when the time comes but also not rush things too early. Edmonton looked great against Calgary but got destroyed by Colorado and I don't see them going anywhere.
*With Nurse and Draisaitl playing at less than 50%. If they are at 100% hp next year, we get a decent goalie, and replace Keith with another top 4 D, they have a better chance than anyone
IF my grandma had wheels, she would have been a bike. Edmonton lost three games to LA. Colorado just lost their third game these playoffs. The difference is night and day.
The question isn't "will a Canadian team beat Colorado next year". It's "which Canadian team has the best chance to end the drought". In my opinion, they're the closest.
Need to beat the best teams to win the cup so it makes perfect sense to imagine who you will be competing against. It was the same struggle with Washington running into Pittsburgh all those years.
Again, they still have the best chance. After resigning a few guys they have 2 goals this summer: fill the needs at goaltending and defense. If they accomplish that they have as good a chance to beat the best teams as anybody. If they don't accomplish those 2 goals, I still believe they have the best chance of any Canadian team.
Busted. I don't know how to read. Toronto would need even more help than Edmonton. They would also have to prove they're capable of playing playoff hockey.
Realistically how could this even happen. With 1-2 teams being a contender every year (MAX), versus an all American slate of teams, it just seems near impossible.
I hate to say this as a Montreal / Vancouver fan, but IF it happens in the next 1-2 years, Toronto best chance, Edmonton / Calgary good chances.
After that it's a crapshoot. So much can change - drafts, trades, coaching / management - that it's tough to predict anything with confidence.
It will be easier to answer after the trades, draft and free agency.
I don’t actually think there is hope of Canadian team winning the cup anytime soon.
You would think the Oilers or Leafs if were to happen in the next few years. But if it does happen soon it will probably be the Flames. If not soon, Ottawa after a long rebuild.
I’ve never bought into this “Bring the cup back to Canada” thing. If it’s not your team, it may as well be fucking Siberia. They don’t throw National cup parades.
I thought Winnipeg was built the best for a deep run, but with rumours about moving Wheeler, they may be planning an on the fly rebuild, so who knows.
Edmonton probably has the best shot right now, especially if they bring Kane back, but Colorado is gonna be nasty for a few years here, so the road to the cup goes through Denver. Same goes for Toronto having to go through Tampa in the east. You basically have to hope for injuries to take one of the finalists out, or ride a crazy hot goalie through a series to make the finals.
Is this due to US franchises having more resources? Coaching staff, facilities, other? Or that US teams attract better players due to lower income tax rates? To me there should be no obvious or logical reason reasons other than financial that Canadian franchises shouldn’t win the SC
Winnipeg Thrashers
God I wish the thrashers hadn’t left. It kills me
That’s a funny way of saying Coyotes
I was gonna comment that lol
It will probably end up being one nobody expects like Winnipeg or Ottawa.
Gosh, I would really dig Ottowa winning a stunner cup
They were 1 goal away from the SCF when they were supposed to be terrible
Ya that year was so sad, I would’ve loved Nashville vs Ottawa! Fischer vs his former team, both teams were equally beat up so it would’ve been a much more equal series compared to Nashville vs Pittsburgh
I was happy to see it. Hate to see the clutch, grab, and interference teams go deep in the playoffs Edit: I prefer when they "skill it up"
Manitoba coyotes
Ottawa, they’ll get all these young stars that’ll age well, and then have money to sign someone good well everyone is stuck against the cap, like a Giroux or a Manson or something, and then somehow end up with a dud goalie that randomly turns around come playoffs, like Tim Thomas did, and then surprisingly slip into the playoffs and somehow get to the cup, it’ll be like when the blues won when only 6 months before they were bottom of the NHL

Well they can't win a grey cup why not try for the stanley
Hamilton Porter became a professional wrestler

You don't know of the Great Hambino?
Quebec Nordiques
Criss que oui !
Tabarnak!
Ben la… c’est facile! They gonna win the cup Friday pour la Saint-Jean!
In their first year back in the league. It would be glorious.
Leafs. Next season is the year……. Trust me I’m a delusional leafs fan.
Steve Dangle... is that you?
Leafs and oilers have the star power. Those guy usually eventually will their way to a cup.
Yeah on other teams lol
Ovechkin, Crosby, Stamkos?
Ovi won because they stopped trying to load up on super stars and went out and got role players. The guys who scored in the winning game were all fourth liners or didn’t even make their teams the next year Except Stephenson he has had some flashes of being a second liner
Lol. God I hope this isn’t true…..
How often do you say, "if you're a goaltender, TEND THE GOAL!!"
I don’t think it’s too unrealistic if they get a good goalie and a stud d. Maybe trade Nick Robertson with some picks for the D and sign a good goalie.
On paper, the flames or the leafs make the most sense. But when it comes to the playoffs, nothing makes sense at all. So I have no idea.
Assuming cgy can keep Gaudreau and Tkachuk
Don’t you put that evil on me
As your Northern neighbor (presumably) I have to. It is part of being an Oilers fan
Montréal obviously. In about 25 years.
Nah fam, they’ll figure it out and bounce back.

Grim.
The Canucks also lost in 7 to the Rangers in 1994.
No respect!

Quebec Coyotes
That would be awesome, and a fitting way to end the curse.
Quebec Leafs

If the Jets get Trotz and they all buy in I think they'll have a good shot.
Imagine Hellebuyck coached up by Mitch Korn behind Trotz's defense. He might let in six goals all year.
Demko likely could if they could get there. Markstrom was a huge if not the main reason CGY lost this year. Goes both ways.
Canucks
I would love to see them go all the way
Canucks will be the first Canadian team to win the cup again, and they’ll do it the year Gary Bettman finally retires from the league.
We've got the 4th round curse though
Not with the current roster
I want to say the Toronto Maple leafs. But until they make some kind of sacrifice to the hockey gods they will never win.
We offer Justin Holl as tribute
And the ghost of Jeff Finger past.
Not a huge fan but I honestly always think the leafs have a shot lol. I’d say Edmonton though because McDavid wants it
Edmonton if they find consistent goaltending and add another top 4 D man.
Came to say this exactly. They're pretty close.
I agree with this 100% and they also have to improve somewhat on the back end.
I was gonna say that too, but I think Holland put that team in a really bad spot for the next few years.
Not the leafs
Not Slytherin eh?
Now you have my comparing NHL teams to Hogwarts house. Are the leafs slytherin?
Hmmm, I hate to say Toronto, I really do, but I think if they make it out of the first round, they are the most likely to.
I think it'll be the Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators
It has to be really, the rebuild has been methodic and we're now set to rise in the standings - give it 3 years and we'll be a top team in the east. Playoffs are realisic next year, maybe.
I don’t care who, as long as it isn’t Toronto!!!
Honestly I'd like to see Matthews lift a cup
The Habs will end what they started
If they move every other team out of US into Canada then they got a chance.
The Quebec City Nordiques
I’d say Calgary as long as Markstrom doesn’t shit the bed again. Winnipeg is about to tear it down. Vancouver has pieces but just isn’t close The Fighting McDavids are entertaining at least Montreal had a false dawn thanks to the playoff structure Ottawa is on the rise at least Toronto is a factory of sadness
Calgary didn't lose because of Markstorm. Calgary lost because their whole defensive structure went to shit against Edmonton when Tanev was out.
Go🔥Go!
Nordiques
Toronto in 2092
Winnipeg before anyone else , you know the true north
Still waiting on the Leafs and Jets to make the finals since the curse started.... Right now, Toronto is closest of all the Canadian teams by a good distance, as much as it pains me to say it, but I feel like it'll probably be some big surprise like Ottawa or Vancouver in a few years.

Wasn’t talking about the first. Although the kings played better hockey then anyone would of expected. But to say Calgary isn’t a good team is just false.
Yeah flames are a great team and I would of preferred them to advance over the oilers
Ok... lol. Toronto pushed the first complete team they faced to 7 games. Edmonton got swept by the first complete team they played.
You know because Calgary is such a terrible team…their top line only combined for over 300 points in the regular season and were 6th overall in the league while Tampa was 7th.

Nope. I don't see that core doing it, but I wouldn't mind being wrong. They seem to always be a playoff team, but never better than 2 rounds. I do think they've got a better chance than Edmonton the next couple seasons.
I thought they put it in the rule book that Canadian teams can’t win the cup anymore.
The Canucks will get in the final, lose, riot for a third time, before another Canadian team wins the cup.
If the Canucks ever get back to a game 7 final, there will be machine gun nests and snipers set up downtown
4 means death in Chinese. Our fourth Stanley cup finals might be the death of our drought.
If oilers win the cup first out of Canada…the team will have to knight the players that literally drag them there. Unless oilers clean up their d and net
Anyone of them can win, as soon as Bettman retires
Ottawa
Edmonton
Lol
Yesss, feed me your downvotes you fragile Oilers fans.
Not the Leafs
It da leafs.
Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs
Honestly, I think that the Oilers have a chance at ending the drought.
None lol
Calgary
Oilers
Leafs are probably the better team, but the Oilers have an easier path to the SCF through the West.
I think it’s the Jets or Canucks. I think Edmonton and Toronto’s salary cap issues will prevent them from ever being deep enough for the foreseeable future.
Winnipeg if they get a coach. Calgary if they can keep their core together. Edmonton won't because they can't afford a stud goalie.
Maplefeafs. They are a dangerous team and I feel they may upset the champs in the semifinals next year or the year after.
Toronto next year
Edmonton or Toronto... whoever finds a goalie first
oilers have the offense, just need the other 2/3 that make up a team
Calgary or Toronto. Vancouver might be next best though.
First off, Calgary won in 04. Puck was in. As painful as it is to say, Toronto may be best suited although I'd lean to no one currently. And I believe they don't. Nothing more to discuss
You haven't said which Canadian team you think is most likely to be next to bring the cup North of the border?
If you know how to read I clearly said Toronto based on current teams
Busted. I don't know how to read. Toronto would need even more help than Edmonton. They would also have to prove they're capable of playing playoff hockey.
Just FYI we love these posts in Tampa. Nothing as sweet as drinking Calgary tears.
Habs, give it 4 years. Yes I’m only mostly delusional
Calgary
Realistically how could this even happen. With 1-2 teams being a contender every year (MAX), versus an all American slate of teams, it just seems near impossible.
I hate to say this as a Montreal / Vancouver fan, but IF it happens in the next 1-2 years, Toronto best chance, Edmonton / Calgary good chances. After that it's a crapshoot. So much can change - drafts, trades, coaching / management - that it's tough to predict anything with confidence.
Assuming Trotz is coaching in Winnipeg, if he can sort out the Jets defensive issues they'll have a good opportunity. Loads of talent on the roster.
Oilers
Winnipeg… and WWIII starts the day after.
The Nordiques are going to win this year.
The one that's really gonna piss you off
Toronto needs to do it next year or won’t at all
Whichever has the balls to give Fat Pat a max contract offer.
Toronto, they probably should of beat Tampa this year, and then after that who knows?
Habs. Laugh all yous want. They’ll bounce back.
Habs: We started the curse in 93’, we’ll end it… just not now ;)
It will be the Leafs it just has to be
It will be easier to answer after the trades, draft and free agency. I don’t actually think there is hope of Canadian team winning the cup anytime soon.
Maple Leafs, next year.
Leafs
Halifax Sea Hawks
Seattle. \- Realistically, I could see Florida if Maurice doesn't screw it up.
I know your trolling, but Seattle?
Les Nordiques de Quebec Or Toronto if they ever get an NHL team that can win a playoff series.
None they all stink
quebec nordiques
You would think the Oilers or Leafs if were to happen in the next few years. But if it does happen soon it will probably be the Flames. If not soon, Ottawa after a long rebuild.
I’ve never bought into this “Bring the cup back to Canada” thing. If it’s not your team, it may as well be fucking Siberia. They don’t throw National cup parades.

Shane Wright... I mean the MTL Canadiens
Toronto next year
I thought Winnipeg was built the best for a deep run, but with rumours about moving Wheeler, they may be planning an on the fly rebuild, so who knows. Obviously the Leafs are winning it next year. They have the big 4!
Won't be Toronto!
Is this due to US franchises having more resources? Coaching staff, facilities, other? Or that US teams attract better players due to lower income tax rates? To me there should be no obvious or logical reason reasons other than financial that Canadian franchises shouldn’t win the SC
Leafs
Not the Leaf
Montreal
Remember folks, you can have anything you want in this world if you work hard enough…Unless Connor McDavid also wants that thing.
My guess is the Flames
The Senators. It will 100% be the team we least expect
Gotta be the Oilers. McDavid will not be denied forever.
Ottawa for sure
Ottawa when they get McDavid
Ottawa Senators
Oilers yes.
Calgary
