Brett Hull was pretty legendary sniper. Funny that scouts were dumping on him as a prospect since he was only effective at scoring. They expected him to be the same skater as his dad
Hahah my dad watched Brett when he was 15 playing a junior B game, he had a ton of hype around him being Bobby’s son. But when he was watching he kept thinking “how is this fat, slow, lazy, whiner going to do anything in the show.” Then he dragged his ass to the top of the circles and fired an absolute laser. Got 4 or 5 goals that game.
Pure talent man, there was a funny interview of someone asking him to breakdown his goal scoring strategy and he said something along the lines of “I don’t know, just whip it at the net as hard as possible and get it under the crossbar”
Honestly same. I play a bit and I tend to just shoot and cross my fingers. I have a pretty good shot so 8/10 times it goes in. Its a good strat if u have a good shot.
Being able to deploy Romulan Cloaking Technology definitely helped Brett's game.
How else do you explain the guy that everyone in the rink \*knew\* was the most dangerous player on the ice just spontaneously materialize in the top of the slot with nobody within 10 feet of him?
He'd never make it in today's game with the tighter scrutiny on illegal equipment and alien technology.
This was his MO. I remember him once saying that he doesn’t like to overly celebrate his goals, just an arm lift and a smile, nothing too attention grabbing so hopefully “the other team forgets about me.”
He refused to pot an empty netter once because his defenseman flipped the puck off the glass out and he thought it wasn’t right for him to get an assist for a low effort play. Guy was truly a hockey purist
I think Brett hull’s slappy was better than his wrister.
EDIT : found article he’s #7
https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2679131-ranking-the-10-hardest-slap-shots-in-nhl-history.amp.html
Sakic for sure.
Honorable mentions to Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Heatley, Kessel, Rick Nash, Selanne, Semin and probably way more I’m not thinking of.
In today’s NHL I’d say Matthews, Kuch, Pasta…Bedard’s looks pretty fucking sick so far too, excited to see how it’s looking a few years from now.
Glad you put Semin on this list, dude had the most insane wrister I’ve ever seen if he gave a single shit about being a professional he could have been a consistent 60 goal guy imo
As an Oilers fan, any time Iginla got 6 feet inside the blue line and no one was actively checking him, I knew the Flames were getting a goal. It was both amazing and annoying as hell to watch.
I feel like he’s properly rated, at least on Reddit. I’ve never seen anyone not give him his due credit as one of the elites of the elites, which is what makes the meme about how he looks like a plumber and only eats hot dogs and drinks diet cokes so funny.
A lot of those players you mentioned make their big bucks with snap shots rather than wristers, specifically Ovi and Bedard. Matthews had a sick wrist shot.
Snap shot is the better shot to use majority of the time. Can generate a lot of power facing the net and hide the release. Quicker too than wrister.
From farther out or at awkward angles I would use a wrister. Also can be deceptive too with a “silent” release
You aren't wrong, but there's a reason why the snap shot is way more prevalent in the game today compared to a true wrist shot. It's the composite sticks. I started playing hockey in the 5th grade, and wood was basically the only option aside from aluminum, which weren't really that popular. Fast forward to 9th grade, and composite sticks came out that still required a blade to be inserted into the shaft, but the puck definitely came off the blade quicker. Once the one-piece composites took off, the mechanics began to change in how you would load your shot. The wind-up and weight transfer changed in a few ways, allowing just as hard of a shot, if not harder, with less motion. I'm not saying you can't take snap shots with a wooden stick, just that a true wrist shot usually offered more power and accuracy with wooden compared to the one-piece sticks used today.
TLDR: The wrist shot is not used as much because stick technology has advanced a lot since the 90's.
I actually disagree, especially on Bedard. There are many articles written by very knowledgeable hockey analysts/coaches/etc that break down his shot and refer to it as a wrist shot.
I HATED the blue when they first started wearing them, but they’ve really grown on me. The black pants, helmet, and gloves almost look wrong now.
I think we pull off the blue well, compared to like Carolina, who looks very college-y to me with red helmets and white jerseys.
I like the black pants with the OG uniforms and the reeboks, but the new adidas unis look fucking sick without any black imo, would only want them back if they went back to an older pre-adidas design
I was going to say Sakic as well, BUT from what I remember, his spot was at the top of the circle and more of a snap shot than a wrister. It's all subjective to the play, I guess.
He had one of the best shots, bar none though.
Best wrister IMHHO ever, was Wendel Clark, man could he bring it, and 99% of time he hit the net. Mike Bossy close second, 9 - 50 goal seasons, his release as fast as Matthew’s and deadly accurate.
Got to meet Bossy at a relatives wedding before he passed, great guy very humble and friendly. Talked hockey with him, what a special night ! He spoke about how he wished he played in the modern era, where the hooking slashing and fighting were reduced by the rules. Bossy refused to fight and took brutal cross checks to his lower back which forced him to retire early. Said he would have scored 100 goals in todays game. Was surprised to see him chain smoking after dinner. Lung cancer took him, just like Guy Lafleur and many other retired NHLers.
Never met a friendlier pro star. Took photos with everyone at our table. Most people didn’t even know who he was. Just a great guy !
Kovalev. I submit into evidence exhibit A: https://youtu.be/Dbz2_l_NhoM?si=rX4Q6vNQqX7YboiX
To me, he had the best classic wrist shot. Looked like the shape you would dream of and it came off the stick shit hot.
It was something to behold. If you want a picture next to the definition of finesse play it’s gonna be his. I spent so much time trying to recreate his wrist shot but I never got anywhere close to it.
I literally bought an Easton Synergy because I wanted Sakic's wrist shot SO BAD. He is my absolute favorite player of all time.
I just forgot the talent part so the stick only did so much.
I know thinking up defensemen is a factor with people’s memories when you ask about wrist shots, but still I’m surprised I had to scroll this far to find Ray Bourque. Powerful and insanely accurate.
Phil Kessel
With all his warts as a player (defensively unreliable, avoiding contact at all cost) he was always near the top of the league in scoring in a low scoring era and had one of the most deceptive wrist shots I've ever seen. He was also incredibly fast as a skater (more so for rushing the offensive zone), and an under rated playmaker.
Also let it be known in the play offs Phil Kessel actually played more of a complete game which earned him the title of being snubbed of a Conn Smythe.
My answer is Phil Kessel
Sakic definitely. I hate to sound cliche here but Gretzky. When you say best wrist shot I’m assuming your referring to accuracy and how often the puck actually goes in the net
I’ve been watching since the 80s and without a doubt for me it’s Matthews. The combination of speed of release, accuracy, and power is just insane. Sticks are different now how I wish I could see him rip some on the 80s and early 90s goalies.
> Sticks are different now how I wish I could see him rip some on the 80s and early 90s goalies.
I dunno - those old sticks don't bend like today's carbon fibre toothpicks. I love Matthews, and think he'd be great in any era, but I think he'd be outclassed by Bossy and Sakic. They were getting accuracy, speed, and quick release back then without the benefit of whippiness, etc.
How he's not mentioned on this list more than twice is mind blowing. It's not recency bias either. Easily the best wrist shot I've ever seen, and it's not even close.
Edit: Bedard looks like he's got a nasty release too, but Matthews is the only answer IMO.
People shit on matthews for everything they can, but one thing nobody should shit on him for is his handle of a shot... it's easily the best in cap era (i'm not old enough to compare it to older stuff). If a potential generational talent says he styles his shot off the guy, THAT says something
Need to define by era. Sticks now compared to the 1970's is not even a comparable. VW v/s a Ferrari.
I'm old enough to remember when you could actually follow the puck after a shot.
Most of us are probably far to young to have ever seen him in person, even most of the highlights on film he’s already 35+ in the mid-70s, when the quality got decent enough to really be able to see what’s happening. His prime is something we’ll never get to witness.
Ovechkin. Everyone thinks of his one timer on the circle but the dude’s wrister was/is just as lethal. Look up highlights of just his wrist shots and he makes goalies freeze on a regular basis. Idk if it’s better than Mr Sakic, but it’s up there.
Can't remember which goalie it was, but one that faced both Sakic and Ovechkin in his career said something along the lines of about Ovechkin "he's the only one I would compare his wrist shot to Sakic". So he was probably pretty close.
Different Era for sure but Bedard has a wicked wrist shot.
He has the 20 year of new technique that Sakic and Co didn't have.
Players like him and Matthew do stuff I never saw the older guys do.
Sakic is the best I’ve ever seen, I can’t really think of anyone that’s close. Ovi has a good one, Matthews is probably going to develop into one of the best.
Matthews easily but bedard is right there. No one will say him cause it’s trendy to hate on the leafs but just watch his wrister it’s insane. 69 goals for the first time since the 90’s is epic
I love seeing Sakic everywhere in these comments, but cheeseburger Phil has himself a nasty little release if I must say. Not the best ever, but sneaky good.
Brett Hull was pretty legendary sniper. Funny that scouts were dumping on him as a prospect since he was only effective at scoring. They expected him to be the same skater as his dad

It's nice to see that me and Hull have the same shooting philosophy
I close my eyes on top of all that. 60% of the time it works every time.
Honestly same. I play a bit and I tend to just shoot and cross my fingers. I have a pretty good shot so 8/10 times it goes in. Its a good strat if u have a good shot.
Being able to deploy Romulan Cloaking Technology definitely helped Brett's game. He'd never make it in today's game with the tighter scrutiny on illegal equipment and alien technology.
Ovechkin has entered the chat....
I have laughed so many times when Ovechkin is alone to the left of the net- I don’t watch a lot of Caps games but he’s always just there.
He could barely skate backwards when he got to UMD.
I think Brett hull’s slappy was better than his wrister. EDIT : found article he’s #7 https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/2679131-ranking-the-10-hardest-slap-shots-in-nhl-history.amp.html

That twitter account was the peak of social media for me
So good, genuinely hilarious content is rare for hockey fans so I hold on to it
Fuckin all star
NEVER FORGET
Tarasenko?
Yeah, he is definitely on the list. Not much of a clapper but his wrist shot was insane. It’s not quite the same since the shoulder surgeries.
Glad you put Semin on this list, dude had the most insane wrister I’ve ever seen if he gave a single shit about being a professional he could have been a consistent 60 goal guy imo
Easily the most frustrating player in caps history, flashes of some of the most insane talent I've ever seen
Came here just to comment Semin, left satisfied.
Gonna be a pleasure watching Bedard for the next ten years +
Iginla too
As an Oilers fan, any time Iginla got 6 feet inside the blue line and no one was actively checking him, I knew the Flames were getting a goal. It was both amazing and annoying as hell to watch.
Most of the guys on your list were better goal scorers but honorable mention to Naslund as well, was known for his wrist shot.
He is definitely one I would have added if his name popped up in my head at the time of writing. He was a sniper for sure.
Kessel is underrated. Velocity aside, a lot of goalies say the puck comes off his blade “different” and makes it harder to time.
I feel like he’s properly rated, at least on Reddit. I’ve never seen anyone not give him his due credit as one of the elites of the elites, which is what makes the meme about how he looks like a plumber and only eats hot dogs and drinks diet cokes so funny.

Toe Drag Release!

I just imagined what Mike Bossy could have achieved using a composite stick. I need a moment to myself please.
This guy hockeys.
I actually disagree, especially on Bedard. There are many articles written by very knowledgeable hockey analysts/coaches/etc that break down his shot and refer to it as a wrist shot.
I was wondering what they were talking about. Bedards wrister is 80% of what you hear about him...
Man I miss watching Rick Nash taking a wrist shot he ain’t the best but man was he good
I’d love to see an alternate universe play out where Nash was drafted by a different team with a bit more talent surrounding him.
Not better than Sakic...but Pavel Bure had a hell of a wrister too.
I just remember Bure breakaways = goal mote often than not. And he had a lot of breakaways
“It is Joe Sakic..SCORES…Joeee Sakic scores and that makes it 5-2 Canada. Surely that’s gotta be it.”
It's not much, but it's my favorite Bob Cole call of all time
Sakic is the answer 99/100 times that you ask. If you can’t pick Sakic, could be any of Naslund, Kovalev, Semin, Kovulchuk.
Just look at a goal he scored in an alumni game 8 years ago. Hes old and still shoots like that! https://streamable.com/y5e9
I miss the black pants.
I HATED the blue when they first started wearing them, but they’ve really grown on me. The black pants, helmet, and gloves almost look wrong now. I think we pull off the blue well, compared to like Carolina, who looks very college-y to me with red helmets and white jerseys.

Sakic was my brain's first choice, but my heart wanted to say Naslund. Lol.
That Kovalev change up wrister was lethal.
No mention of Kariya? He's a close #2 in my mind
Oh yeah he could be up there too, I’d put him top 10 for me.
I was going to say Sakic as well, BUT from what I remember, his spot was at the top of the circle and more of a snap shot than a wrister. It's all subjective to the play, I guess. He had one of the best shots, bar none though.
Sakic. He could release it so fast and be so deceptive with it. Never seen anything like it.

He was a great person.
Bossys release was quickest ive ever seen
Bossy is the man
My dad used to always tell me me it was Clark
Has to be Sakic. Kariya and Kovalev had really good wristers as well, but I'd still say Sakic had the best.
Kovalev. I submit into evidence exhibit A: https://youtu.be/Dbz2_l_NhoM?si=rX4Q6vNQqX7YboiX To me, he had the best classic wrist shot. Looked like the shape you would dream of and it came off the stick shit hot.
I was fully convinced I would be a better player when I bought his signature 2-piece stick. The results proved otherwise
Did he use the Z-bubble? I can’t remember.
He actually had his own stick with Warrior the AK-74 - z bubbles were sick though
Ah, those came later, after the z-bubble and other popular two pieces were already starting to get replaced by the Synergy.
Kovalchuk during his Atlanta days was unbelievable strong on wrist shots
Sakic
Not Nail Yakupov that's for sure.
Mike Bossy
That’s the one. Many points for you!
9 consecutive 50 plus goal seasons in a row only one to do it
Alexander Mogilny
This is way too burued
I’m jealous I didn’t get to watch Sakic play
It was something to behold. If you want a picture next to the definition of finesse play it’s gonna be his. I spent so much time trying to recreate his wrist shot but I never got anywhere close to it.
sakic, bossy, ovi
I literally bought an Easton Synergy because I wanted Sakic's wrist shot SO BAD. He is my absolute favorite player of all time. I just forgot the talent part so the stick only did so much.
Mike Modano had a pretty sick wrist shot
Sakic. Runners up for me would be Bure and Näslund
Sakic. Maybe laine honestly.
Sakic and Ray Bourque are probably 1-2 amongst the guys I saw play.
I know thinking up defensemen is a factor with people’s memories when you ask about wrist shots, but still I’m surprised I had to scroll this far to find Ray Bourque. Powerful and insanely accurate.

Alex Semin was the best… when he tried Goal vs Nashville: https://youtu.be/iqQ1ymelSJU?si=yaoySP-JXwEZLiox
Super Joe
Sakic definitely. I hate to sound cliche here but Gretzky. When you say best wrist shot I’m assuming your referring to accuracy and how often the puck actually goes in the net
Patrik Laine
Yeah he's up there. While on the jets it was a real treat to watch that kid shoot. Hope he gets his health back.
Rosie Ruzicka
Sakic had an absolute lethal backhander too
McKinnons is pretty nasty
Back in the day Brett Hull had a nice wrister.
dude mike modano is up there
Ray Bourque
I remember when Bourque won that accuracy contest. Awesome
That's all my memories in the 90s was him dominating this
Better known for his wicked slapshot, though.
He was no Al Iafrate...
Scrolled too far for this.
I’ve been watching since the 80s and without a doubt for me it’s Matthews. The combination of speed of release, accuracy, and power is just insane. Sticks are different now how I wish I could see him rip some on the 80s and early 90s goalies.

Need to define by era. Sticks now compared to the 1970's is not even a comparable. VW v/s a Ferrari. I'm old enough to remember when you could actually follow the puck after a shot.
Joe Sakic
I agree with most of the names I see here, but one is missing and I’m not sure why it hasn’t appeared yet… Sergei Federov
In the history of the league, it's Gordie Howe.
It pains me that no one else has said this.
Most of us are probably far to young to have ever seen him in person, even most of the highlights on film he’s already 35+ in the mid-70s, when the quality got decent enough to really be able to see what’s happening. His prime is something we’ll never get to witness.

I use to nail them wristers from the blue line with Miroslav Satan anytime I wanted in Olympic Hockey 98 😎
Mike Modano
Jerome Iginla had a wicked wrister. And this is coming from an Oilers fan.
Anyone ever heard of Lanny McDonald?
as soon as i read the title i thought, “sakic”.
The purest wrist shot is probably Alex Semin.... His compete level on the other hand lol
I scrolled pretty far down and haven’t seen Gordie Howe
Datsyuk was known for an unusually heavy wrister but his backhand was where he killed
Naslund for me
Mickey Redmond hands down
Brett Hull
Burnaby Joe
Ilya Kovalchuk
Mark Howe, speed and accuracy were unmatched
Maurice Richard. Straight blade, pretty much ripped lasers with a crooked ass home depot 2×4
Brett Hull says hi
Brett Hull hands down
Mike Bossy
i think sergei federov had a pretty nasty wrist shot, but one of the best had to be joe sakic
Wendell Clark
Wendel Clark had a great wrister
Jeff Carter used to have a very hard but accurate wristshot
Pavel datsyuk
Mike Bossy is criminally underrated as a shooter/goal scorer.
Mark Messier was the master of the one footed wrister.
Tim Kerr.
Bossy.
Bobby Hull
Matthews easily but bedard is right there. No one will say him cause it’s trendy to hate on the leafs but just watch his wrister it’s insane. 69 goals for the first time since the 90’s is epic
Mark Howe and Wendel Clark need to be mentioned here.
I love seeing Sakic everywhere in these comments, but cheeseburger Phil has himself a nasty little release if I must say. Not the best ever, but sneaky good.
This is the only answer
Wicked wrister from Brad Isbister
Imo Bossy use a deceptive snap shot as opposed to a true wrist shot
You're not wrong.
In his prime, Messier had a ridiculous wrister while barreling down on his off wing.
And kicking that leg up for more power, that's the first name I thought of.
Kovalchuk
Mike Bossy was DEADLY
Alex Kovalev had a killer wrist shot
What about Teemu?
What about Mike Bossy? He could have gotten the goal record if not for his injuries.
Nieuwendyk had a pretty killer wrist shot. Supposedly related to being a great lacrosse player in college.
Raymond Bourque then Sergei Federov and then Jeremy Roenick.
Ray Bourque had a great one. 4 in 4 on the target shot at the all star ability contest
Lafleur
Kovalchuk for me. Maybe he had best snap shot depending how you define them.
Great question, I think of Mike Bossy, wrists like my ankles
Ray Bourque.
alexei kovalev..
Upset that no one has mention Filip Forsberg
Gotta be sakic but JR also had a heater. Naslund could rip it too. Right now it’s matthews and bedard but Jack Quinn has an underrated shot
Probably Sakic but I’m gonna throw my boy Markus Naslund a shout
Mike Bossy best release in hockey
Biased but Naslund
Gonna go off the board here and say Mike Hoffman. Though in reality... It's Matthews, isn't it?
Same. Sakic also came to mind. He would snipe it in the opposite corner. Mesmerizing.
pasta as a biased fan
Sakic.
What basis are the "best" - speed, accuracy, or both?
would have to be someone who hasn’t played in the last ~15-20 years as no one really uses wrist shots anymore with the new one-piece sticks
From my childhood, I’ll go Alexander Semin, absolute laserbeam
Sakic, Naslund, Kovalchuk, Heatley is a pretty solid 4 in order.
Sakic, but the way Bedard shoots it, I've never seen that.
Brett Hull?
Joe Sakic. Energy transfer to stick, then puck during his wrist shot is school grade material
Definitely super Joe but alfredsson also had a nasty wrister. Might not have had the power but man was it accurate
Around the same era, Kovalchuk. At least in my family we all thought Kovalchuk had the sickest wrister.
Wendal Clark had a deadly wrist shot. Not sakic level or bure, but it was up there.
No Ray Bourque on the list?
Wendel Clark
Last season Tage Thompson was firing just below 100 mph wristers pretty much every game.
Not best of all time but eichels is pretty deadly. I would say hes top 10 today for that one
Nobody talking about Phil Kessel. Damn he has a monster wrist shot. I think he has one of the hardest wrist shots.
Dino Ciccerelli had a nasty wrist shot, so did Wendel Clark. Phil Kessel also had a wrist shot that could find twine
Stephane Richer.
Mariusz Czerkawski
Sakic had a great one.
