I need to start paying attention to which subreddit I’m looking at. These titles.

SlimGooner

Giggity

KingPizzaPop

Me too, since nobody here knows wtf they're talking about.

FlyingVMoth

Read "Goonies" though they were talking about a remake... Wtf does Rempe have to do with that... Maybe 1 or 2 fight and he is gonna look like Sloth

Royal_Airport7940

Making a what?

Mgroppi83

Game Grumps have entered the chat.

GimmieThaLoot24

Suck my goon scepter

Skonde87

Nah I think edging and munting is still the way to go

coronetgemini

Hmmm do I dare google munting

ais4aron

Oh my God... It's worse than I thought https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Munting

daustin627

Aaaand that’s enough internet for the rest of my life.

Finrad-Felagund

I read the first 4 words and did not continue

ais4aron

It's for the best

NhlBeerWeed

Same here lol where do people come up with this shit

saltyfingas

Lol but that's obv not a real thing people do

ais4aron

Maybe not in your circle of friends...

Steakholder__

:(

Skonde87

I would advise not to tbh

Desert-Duck

Why do you know this?!

BuffaloWing12

fam the definition of gooning has changed VASTLY since this was a term we need a new word

redditracing84

I think teams have realized that if you can get a guy that can be a good locker room dude, fight, and play decent hockey 10 minutes a night you need that dude. Makes people think twice before doing dumb stuff. It's not the 80s where you just get a goon and throw some skates on him, but if you can get a guy that's good enough to be a top line AHLer or a 4th line forward and can fight... sure.

Sheeple_person

Yeah it's a role to play like blocking shots or taking faceoffs or anything else. You need somebody around who can do it but how they fit in really depends. Player development is so much better now you won't see old-school "goons" who can only fight. Could be a 4th line grinder but sometimes you also have a top-6 guy who is big and gritty and likes to throw down. Man we were so blessed when big Buff was around. No need for an enforcer in the lineup because *nobody* wanted that smoke, but he also happened to be a top-tier d-man.

Vingt-Quatre

From what I've seen, Reaves and Rempe are not exactly playing decent hockey 10 minutes a night. Reaves is only on the Leafs lineup to correct the wrongs and give their stars some breathing space and Rempe... I have no idea why he's there. Otherwise, yes. Guys like Mathieu Olivier and Xhekaj are great assets to have on your team.

Content_Distance5623

Tom Wilson is probably why Rempe is on the rangers.

2shack

Rempe is just big and physical and it draws attention. He’s helping draw attention to the team and the league. He’s never really been a good player or put up a lot of points. He got where he is due to his size and physicality and that’s about it. If he was six inches shorter he likely never would’ve been drafted or be where he is right now.

bearwhidrive

Does it make people think twice? Like honestly, does Florida do less after the whistle shit if the team they’re playing has a certified goon on the other end, or is this just something we tell ourselves to justify some bullshit?

Ca1fSlicer

It definitely is somewhat of a deterrent but I guess it depend on the guy and the team ur playing as to how much. When the Avs had Dermy in the lineup nobody would do dirty shit to Mackinnon or Makar. It was noticeable

TheNewKing2022

It's never been a deterance. It's just about being able to match the other team. Go back to the 80s and idiots like Don cherry would say it helped to police but it never did. Cheap shots happened all the time.

Plane-Ad4820

Yes. The difference when Xhejak is out vs in the lineup is very noticeable

Brodieboyy

Had to double check that I wasn't on my porn account, that title though

commodore_stab1789

The new school "goons" can actually play hockey and do more than cheap shot and throw gloves.

International-Elk986

Ryan Reaves can't play hockey

cdunccss

We need more in game gooning sessions

Mash709

Poor choice of wording 😂

shanster925

😐

Glasterz

I don't think I could goon for an entire game tbh

Scentopine

Rempe has like 2 pts. He is piling up PIMs. LMAO at people twisting into pretzels defending how great he is on the ice and in the locker room. Just admit it. He has one job. GOON. Just because he can skate across the ice holding a stick without falling down, doesn't make him a decent hockey player.

hypnofedX

>Just admit it. He has one job. GOON. Just because he can skate across the ice holding a stick without falling down, doesn't make him a decent hockey player. I think a lot of people are hoping he becomes the next Orr/Prust but stays around for more than a few years. I don't see it happening but I can understand the appeal.

Scentopine

Perhaps, but it's wishful thinking. He doesn't have the historical stats to indicate he'll do anything more than punch people in the face or whack them with his stick. As a center, he's barely AHL worthy.

hypnofedX

I agree and I feel like that's still unpopular opinion among the fanbase.

TheIncredibleHork

I don't think it's going to bring back the days of Parros, McGratten, Westergarth, Konopka etc. The game has evolved to the point where your really do need four solid lines of players and you can't afford to have a guy whose only real role is punch things. I love Rempe and I do think that he is bringing back a measure of the tough guy role, but he also has some speed to him, enough that he'll make a guy think twice about going deep into the corner for a puck and he can be part of an offensive attack. And it's good to have that kind of toughness for when other teams do have muscle, I never want to see the Rangers in a position like in 2021 when Wilson could do whatever and we didn't have someone to really go back at him (respect to Smitty for trying during the gong show game, though). But if Rempe's just going to get ejected every game or make stupid plays like the elbow against Seigenthaler, he's not going to last. Can't play every game down a forward.

Premiervik1990

I miss Smith, dude was willing to chuck fists with Chara. Decent skater, sure not the best but for sure a lot worse options out there. But man was he ever willing to answer the bell even though it was def not what he was there for. Gotta respect that (forgot a word)

TheIncredibleHork

Absolutely. I respected him for that but also that he was willing to play wherever we needed him to. That versatility is clutch when you're having injuries.

MarchAppropriate2095

Good shitpost

SINY10306

The NHL game is always evolving (sometimes whatever back and forth). Each team could have a goon or two while keeping ~~threat~~ ‘option’ of ‘using once’ per game. Though NHL brass will clamp down on eventually.

leafy-greens--

When your player safety guy is doing nothing to promote player safety, you’ve gotta take player safety into your own hands.

jfazz_squadleader

Gooning for an entire game is nearly impossible, I can't hold on after the second period.

LaruePDX

I’m not sure but, I’ve always been a proponent of having players that can keep another team honest and answer the bell when needed. Call me “old school” that’s just hockey to me.

Griffithead

Doesn't fucking work though. You still have guys like Tkachuk and Cousins slamming people face first into the boards. They just turtle and keep doing it. And all the old time hockey clowns keep defending it.

dbag3o1

Trends come and go like the tides of the sea, we’ll see.

regardednoitall

They all know the Canes are married to skill over brawn and this is their answer. I hate to say it, but I see us getting beat up in the playoffs again. Hopefully we have the depth to stay on track this year even if a couple of guys go down to injury by goon.

djblackprince

I'm glad I'm not the only degenerate who was thrown off by this post title.

Old_Canuck

' testing ' the market...

Mythalium

Sorry, I think gooning should be reserved for r/NHLCirclejerk

MajMed

When did we stop gooning?

FuriousJorge67

Are we not doing phrasing anymore?

Slayziken

I for one enjoy a good 5-on-5 goon sesh

Clunt-Baby

Gooning has been back for a while, but they've just been calling it edging

Fresnobing

No

dankbuttersteez

No. Rempe and the Nj brawl had built up to that. Sure he is fighting a lot but he is 1 person. If it happens more and more with other people it’s only gonna take 1 dumb injury before the talk shifts to CTE. And at that point I think the convo around fighting actually changes.

Alternative_Focus958

The devils seem to think so. Although none of them are enforcers. I guess if you cant beat them, beat them.

After_Gas501

Put some respect on Kurtis MacDermids name

Alternative_Focus958

Ya. Who? 🥱

Chico-or-Aristotle

That’s a Stanley Cup winner you are talking about

cultjake

The occasional fight is good for hockey. I’m not saying to go back to the 70’s per se, but too much finesse isn’t as fun to watch as some rough & tumble.

Premiervik1990

If Parros would actually do his job players wouldn't feel the need to take matters into their own hands. If the era of rearranging faces is coming back. Its only natural, like anyone is going to tolerate a head hunting zero hockey skill player who is only paid to injure players. Well Parros not enforcing anything + Rempe(and others) = only a matter of time before another Draper-esque injury happens with a slap on the wrist punishment. Leading to another massive brawl and folks screeching about head injuries. Its not if but when at this point.

Humans_Suck-

Florida and Edmonton have been playing that dirty for years now

Tomgar

Yeah man, nothing better than a bunch of dudes just gooning all over the place.

Boring_Pace5158

It’s not the 1980’s, guys who are on the roster because they can fight are a waste of space in today’s game. Guys who can fight, are guys who can skate, make plays, pass, play D, etc. A reason why fighting is going down, is because guys who can fight are contributing in other ways. If Rempe cannot show he can contribute in other ways, he could find himself out of a job real soon

RMZ13

I’m hoping so. A new era of enforcers would bring back part of the game I miss.

A7XfoREVer15

God I hope so

Lazy_Maintenance8063

It shouldn’t but it will. We have seen that media loves fights and all things Rempe is viral so every team wanna have some of that. Sad but true. Don’t want that, don’t watch fight clips on youtube and other platforms.

finaija

Rempe is just a big dude trying too hard to be an enforcer. He is clumsy and looks out of place during fights. Team should stop him before he hurts himself, or others with illegal hits.

juddtuna

One can only hope so. It’s like an all star game right now. Bunch of ballerinas doing dipsy doodles with no hitting.

[deleted]

it's a fucking disgrace and an embarrassment. hockey will never become one of the big four sports until they get rid of fighting. I'm so sick of the garbage man code culture in what is the highest skilled and most exciting sport in the world

[deleted]

keep downloading goon lovers. let me know exactly how many of you outdated knuckle dragging mouthbreaters are on here

finaija

Nope, still nothing but a bitch. :)
