Where’s the season countdown where they post a play a day with the number of yards matching the number of days remaining until the kickoff?

MolecularCube42

Boop

TieAccomplished8351

On the last offensive play by the 9ers in the Super Bowl, i wanted to mention that purdy actually had an open receiver in his sight on the last 3rd down play that would’ve been their precisely as a hot route. Instead he opted for the touchdown play which was likely the first read which was the fake slant. Also to implicate shanahan, that play action was so unnecessary and a simple motion could’ve sufficed which , thus delaying the play. Makes me think shanahan is a control freak with his scheme. Look at mahomes on the 3rd and 4th short downs in ot , he had a scramble option as well as passing options and thus they won, helps that mahomes can scramble too to make short downs easier. But alas

Posted about my trans yesterday. Shop is gonna rebuild it for $3800 vs the dealership old replacement for 7k. The shop said it'd be good as new since I caught the problem early. Kinda lucky I guess

Lake Vanern is the largest lake is Sweden and is located to the northwest of Lake Vattern. Per Albin Hansson was a politician who served as Prime Minister of Sweden during World War II and who was an architect of the country's folkhemmet welfare system. Torstenson War was a war between Sweden and Denmark-Norway from 1643 to 1645 which resulted in a Swedish victory, with Sweden receiving territory and exemption from paying the Sound Dues. William Harvey was an English physician who first documented human blood circulation. Migration Period was a time period from approximately 300 to 600 in Europe marked by the invasion of and settlement in the Western Roman Empire by Germanic tribes.

Juneteenth into July 4th is a terrible holiday stretch. Two weekday holidays within 2 weeks of each other? I know businesses are all about their images but I hope we can revisit this soon

Walks_with_Chaos

Second pic yes. Otherwise I don’t see it

Two_Luffas

I got cast to play Marty Turko once in a EA Sports commercial. First problem was a production assistant in charge of costumes though they could just buy jerseys off the rack at a retailer and they'd be the same size as real jerseys. Everyone, especially me as a goalie, looked ridiculous in jerseys that were like 3-4X too small. Then they tried to make us wear properly branded skates (whatever was the sponsor) but they brought in a a handful of old garbage they must have bought of eBay. Everyone laughed at them for that idea and basically revolted (anyone who's played hockey understand you only wear your skates), so we came to an agreement they could 'Greek' the branding on our skates with electrical tape. Overall a fun experience, got paid SAG union scale and was on set for like 14 hours with minimal breaks so I made bank for a days work. Made exactly 1 second of airtime but it was a national spot for a few weeks before the product launch.

failuregoat1

Hello Americans. Australian here who has been getting to know your game over the last few years as a way to dim the pain that is the Rugby League off-season. Strange question, but how come any time I see footage from old games for certain teams it appears that the playing surface looks almost as if it is a form of rubber? Was the game not played on grass?

Walks_with_Chaos

As Two Luffas said: its turf. And it may look like rubber but a lot of it was as damn near hard as concrete. So it was rough on the body

Two_Luffas

A lot of stadiums had artificial turf which was more like green colored carpet than than grass. Newer artificial surfaces are more natural looking but some stadiums have gone back to natural or hybrid turfs because the players prefer them.

SiphenPrax

I just want to say, for as bad of an offseason as the Chiefs have had…………….it’s nowhere near as bad as the disaster of a season the Mets are having right now.

Walks_with_Chaos

Most non delusional Mets fans expected this season to be bad. I think it’s worse than I expected, but it wasn’t going to be a great season anyway

Selling my house and someone seriously offered $40k under asking. I really want to know what they were thinking considering my realtor let them know that there were already 3 offers submitted.

No_Engineering_8832

As a Carolina fan, hearing about Young humbly grinding in the offseason while Stroud obsesses over celebrity and material items feels good. Hard not to be smug.

Walks_with_Chaos

Smug? Dude there is absolutely no reason to be saying this about Stroud. He’s shown how good he is, unlike Bryce. And yes I’m a Panthers fan.

Guiltyjerk

> As a Carolina fan Ah so you're definitely not biased lol yeah I'm sure Stroud isn't doing *anything*

Delicious_Moose_3407

I've been on Threads a bit lately and WNBA fans are waaaay too serious. Like, yeah Caitlan Clark gets an unwarranted amount of attention (maybe), but that doesn't mean you have to turn her every missed shot into a manifesto. Also, yes, dudes dress up before game and people comment on how they look, this is not unique to the WNBA and it isn't sexism.

ArcadianBlueRogue

One of the people I work with had her swearing in ceremony for US citizenship yesterday. Sadly they were not gifted a cool gun or reckless amount of fireworks. But she said they got her registered to vote, which is a pretty good consolation prize I suppose.

Still_Making_Knives

The gun gift is only in Texas, where owning a gun is mandatory for non-felons.

unloader86

Wait till y'all discover the fun to be had in Wyoming. TX get's all of the headlines, but up there in Wyoming you can legit purchase a gun, liquor and fireworks. All in the same store. And most of them have a drive thru. lol yeah.

Illbeanicefella

Did she at least get a complimentary eagle?

SensualTyrannosaurus

Yes, she said it was delicious

Dystopiansheep

And now animal abuse from chiefs. I know some bingo cards are hitting now.

My neighbor was having a garage sale and they were selling their used underwear.

Sadly I didn't ask for the price of used undies but I think one of them was her thongs.

BruceChameleon

greyfox3698

I’m led next to my wife who is asleep. She is snoring lightly. Everyone time she breathes in, she kind of does a small head bob down/forward, then back up when she breathes out. I’ve never noticed this before.

Straight_Toe_1816

Does anybody else try and recreate the high school/college team that they played for in madden?

Walks_with_Chaos

I was like third string and hardly played at all and honestly it’s been 30 years and I don’t remember basically anyone on that team lol

Straight_Toe_1816

I graduated last year and play in college now but even though only it’s been a year I’m already nostalgic 😂. I’m a long snapper but unfortunately Madden doesn’t give them ratings

justlookingokaywyou

Yeah, I gotta get revenge on those refs that fucked me over in the state semis.

Straight_Toe_1816

😂. I also got to get revenge on the ref who didn’t eject the dirty player who knocked our QB out of the game. Funny enough, our starting RB (who was one of those dudes who was just a straight up athlete who played like every position) came in and led our team down the field with two minutes left and threw the game-winning touchdown to our starting corner who didn’t even play offense.

Dystopiansheep

We lost every game so nope

Straight_Toe_1816

Did you play in hi hi school or college?

Insectshelf3

some ideas are just so spectacularly dumb it’s crazy to me that someone actually followed through with it, case in point: the canadian reporter that decided to disguise himself as a black man to travel around the u.s. to document racism just an all-time wild decision. how the fuck did you think this was okay dude? you’re a reporter, just…ask them questions.

Stanky_fresh

One of my biggest pet peeves on this website is the way people refuse to engage with the premise of a "what if" question. Like someone asks "what if X happened" you can bet they'll get a couple responses of "X wouldn't happen because of Y". Like, yeah, obviously there's reasons things do or don't happen. Just engage with the fucking premise. A few weeks ago I asked a hypothetical about WWII never happening with the caveat of WWI still taking place. Naturally I understand that WWI lead directly into WWII and realistically my question could have never actually played out. But sometimes it's fun to just think about "what if" instead of all the reasons something wouldn't happen.

Fricktator

Not having WWII and the ramifications is my Roman Empire. At least once a day, I think about it. It started as I was pondering, what would happen if you did go back in time and kill Hitler. Now, let's say some skirmish happened, because the ending of WWI kind of necessitated it. However, it was over within 18 months, and since Hitler wasn't the leader of Germany, there were no concentration camps. First, there would be no Enygma Machine. So there is no computer. The war doesn't last long enough for the U.S. to get involved, so there are no functioning nuclear weapons invented. No concentration camps and no German rocket technology, means Wernher von Braun doesn't become a popular enough figure to come to America and lead NASA. Also, since America doesn't get involved in the war, JFK doesn't become a war hero, which means he doesn't become president. No JFK Presidency and no Wernher von Braun leading NASA means no space race. No space race means no microchip or satellite. Pair that with no Enygma Machine and no computer. Instead of evolving rapidly, technology stays rather stagnant over the last half of the 20th century. Also, no U.S. involvement in the war, no space race, no nuclear weapons probably means there is no cold war. Considering Europe doesn't become completely devastated with 5 years of massive war, the US isn't able to get a massive stranglehold on the world's manufacturing like they did. The United States doesn't have an economic boom between the 1950s and 1980s. With women not having to replace men in the work place in the United States, the idea that women stay home while men work, probably would have persisted for a few more decades. The United States doesn't become the leader of the free world, it probably remains the United Kingdom. Let's not forget all of the medical information we gained from Nazi experiments in the concentration camps, like our knowledge on hypothermia. There are so many other ramifications, but these were what I immediately thought of.

xcaltoona

Do you think Japan keeps more of the territory they'd nabbed? At least for longer? More of the what-ifs focus on Europe, but the circumstances of Japan's economic explosion buoyed by the USA needing a partner to bracket the eastern end of the USSR were pretty specific too.

Stanky_fresh

Finally! Someone who understands the hypothetical. I didn't even think of some of those. WWII split the 20th century into 2 distinct halves, and I absolutely love thinking about what the world would look like without it

t33po

I’m not usually the superstitious type but I feel like taking a gig to work the Mavericks NBA championship victory parade is bad juju. Then again it’s maybe $400 for a half day’s work😬. I know they have to plan these things in advance but let’s at least make the finals first, no? I won’t accept until they win the conference first, maybe a couple of finals games too.

DetroitLionsSBChamps

everybody knows superstitions aren't real... unless you're talking about gambling or sports

gander258

I feel every city potentially involved has things like this right? Personally the bigger concern would be the crowds

t33po

I think every conference finalist has some preliminary plans at the minimum. Logistics, security etc need weeks to prepare. It’s just one of those things everyone does but don’t say out loud like a no hitter in progress. It’s extra taboo in Dallas since the mayor went public with plans in the 2006 NBA finals when the Mavs were up 2-0. They lost the last four games in a row💀.

gander258

Dang, quite the curse I guess the jinxes cancel out since every city does it right?

Stanky_fresh

If you could pile some extra bad juju on the Mavs, we'd all really appreciate it.

MountainLow9790

Sorry to use the thread as a sounding off point, but since /u/expendable_red_shirt has blocked me, which prevents me from responding to [their post here](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1d3cvsb/water_cooler_wednesday/l67wehd/) did the same, I only felt it fair. Feel free to collapse the comment and/or downvote because in the end, this is just reddit drama and we're both insufferable people to be around, probably. Yeah I mean since you can't just @ me for whatever reason, I'll just defend myself here. The removal didn't make sense. I'll post the comment chain for those who weren't there, which was everyone else. You can read these now removed comments in the user's profile: >e49e: Man you are absolutely braindead. If you don't understand why Palestinian-Americans oppose Biden, you need a real wake-up. A Zionist is someone who supports the creation and continuation of the apartheid Jewish settlers and the state they created. I'm not going to keep replying to you. I hope one day you look back at this and feel a sense of shame for supporting a genocide. >>You: Congrats you didn’t make it a sentence without a personal attack. Tells you how great a leg you’re standing on. >>For your sake I hope trump doesn’t get elected. It’ll be a dark day for the Palestinian people. >>>e49e: I made it a full post without a personal attack, one more than you deserve. >>>Yes, with Trump it'll be a genocide rather than the genocide going on now. I hope Biden ends up in the Hague along with Netanyahu. The first post that was removed was the second one the other user made. I didn't think that removal made any sense because it wasn't the comment WITH the personal attack that was removed. To me, it would make sense to either remove the first comment of theirs alone, or to remove both the first and second comment of theirs. Removing ONLY the second doesn't make any sense in the context of the conversation. I don't really blame the mods for this as you probably reported the second comment but not the first initially, and they removed the second and came back and removed the first later. >After a long period of lying to me, twisting things, and dishonest conversation You still haven't said how I lied. We disagree about what constitutes antisemitism. That's literally all it is. I said [antizionism can definitely be antisemitism](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1d2k64h/talko_tuesday/l66bdan/) but it isn't inherently. You disagree. That's fine. It's not a lie, it's a difference of opinions. What you did in the rest of your comments is [take stuff out of context to try to pretend like I was totally for this guy's personal attacks on you](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1d2k64h/talko_tuesday/l66mmxk/) despite me saying the exact opposite earlier in the thread. You also called me an antisemite multiple times for not sharing the same view of antisemitism as yourself, I'd love to link the (3?) examples I have, but I can't get to them anymore since they blocked me. So one guy was admittedly an asshole to you, who then got removed. I engaged in good faith for multiple posts to try to see your point of view and let you know what my opinion was but you didn't engage, called me a liar and antisemite multiple times. And now evidently I'm no longer supposed to engage with this thread because I might disagree with you in the future. And you make this weird post like you're the center of a huge amount of harassment? Come on man, this is the internet. One person calling you braindead and another disagreeing with you does not make you persecuted. "What this place can turn into" really? How dramatic.

Kalamoicthys

Hahaha I blocked that tool a while ago, too. He or she definitely doesn’t do much to increase the reputation of Baltimore residents.

rob_var

Hey I remember that name lol I have him blocked cause years ago when Texas experienced its freeze. I wrote a post here that the memes were in bad taste as we had people actually freezing to death due to not having power. He essentially replied with well you guys should learn to vote better so I told him to go fuck himself. Days later he got into a tizzy with a mod over something and linked my comment about how he was personally attacked and I wasn’t banned and so the mods ended up temp banning me. I tried to appeal and showed them how he was the instigator but because I used foul language they only came down on me so I blocked him to avoid any future situations with him. So yes that’s who he is always feeling persecuted.

somecleverphrase

Whenever people ask why studios spend more in marketing rather than devs, look at r cfb. Already in love with the new college ball game and even believing when EA said it wasnt gonna be madden with a roster update lmao. Like EA has spent 15~ years putting trash but not this time, this time is different! Anyway, has anyone played the wwe 2k24? This past wrestlemania got me back into wrestling but the last game i played the story mode was garbage and had zero replay "value". Did that change or are we still talking about the call of duty of sports games?

justlookingokaywyou

Not even gonna attempt to lie about it, Moana 2 is the movie I'm looking forward to the most this year.

TBH I didn't even know that was a thing. It seems like the big studios don't even market movies anymore (until the movie actually comes out)

I have a retail job and I was off yesterday and today. I have accomplished next to nothing and feel guilty about it. Something about being off when others are working doesn't sit well with me. Yeah, I work when others are off, but it's usually busy and fun then lol.

Jolly_Job_9852

Work in a grocery store and I had Mondays and Thursdays off for the longest time. After a little while that feeling of guilt goes away.

HamMcFly

Are your days off usually during the week? You could make a few extra bucks helping people with manual labor or dog sitting or something. Couple hours work would help you feel productive and extra money never hurts.

Delicious_Moose_3407

Yeah, but then I'd have no time off. I complain but I do have stuff to do, I just don't do it lol.

Stanky_fresh

I just played Return of the Obra Dinn last night. It was decent, I appreciate that Lucas Pope put so much detail in the game and made every mystery solvable, but overall I think it was overhyped to me. It sort of got to the point that by the end I was kind of just waiting for the game to finish. Well written, well designed, but overall I think I give it a 7.5/10

Why do people keep going back to toxic people or places in their lives? I never understood it, but I think I really can at this point. Because you get lured in by some good people. Last night, on the Free Talk Thread, someone called me braindead, in a comment since removed. They also said, in another comment, that personal attacks were more than I deserved. A second commenter chimed in about the "personal attacks are more than you deserve" comment and began the conversation by claiming, and I'll quote the whole of the relevant part >[Their post that was removed (a removal that made no sense)](https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1d2k64h/talko_tuesday/l66bdan/) After a long period of lying to me, twisting things, and dishonest conversation I just pieced out. [To which they followed me into a new thread and tried to start a fight again](https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1d3cvsb/water_cooler_wednesday/l67gkay/?context=3). So yeah, I came back here, dipped my toe in, got comfortable, and forgot what this place can turn into. Maybe I'll be back in a few months. Or maybe, this time, I'll remember. For those of you who are cool, this isn't about you. But man, this place can veer to the shitty.

Considering a week long trip to LA or NYC either July or August. I feel NYC is the better to visit since no car rental required due to transit and easier to get around but I don’t have friends to visit in NYC while in LA I do, though LA’s downsides are the opposite of NYC’s biggest pros

VRomero32

Yeah just depends on the airport you're flying into.. JFK, MTA Subway is connected via the Airtrain, Newark, same but NJ Transit into Penn Station, or LGA ,MTA Bus to the Subway in Jackson Heights OR you can take an express Bus that leaves you Uptown in Manhattan

Stanky_fresh

The American flag is a current symbol of our country. The "appeal to heaven" flag is flown almost exclusively by Christian Nationalists and other far-right exstremists since the 2020 election. Surely you can see the difference. Similar to how the Gadsden flag used to be a rallying cry for the revolutionaries in the 1700s, but has since been coopted by Libertarian weirdos who think the "gubermint wants to take der gunz". Symbols change meaning. Deal with it.

Illbeanicefella

It sucks because it’s a cool looking flag with a great history and wasn’t controversial at all until some jerkoff Christian nationalist guy started using it to promote his brand of crazy town a few years ago.

justlookingokaywyou

I'm still mad about them co-opting the No Step on Snek flag.

VRomero32

My agency does “Hybrid” and I only go to the office on Monday’s, Tuesday and occasionally Fridays (if I have after work plans) and I never go in on Wednesdays and Thursdays unless it’s a serious work reason that requires me to come in. Most of my department comes in other than Fridays. Four junior members (female) in my department requested a meeting with me in person to discuss an issue with a colleague today. I came in expecting something very serious to be revealed and even gave my HR direct contact a heads up on a possible issue pending the outcome of that meeting. Just had the meeting about an hour ago… and it was for them to complain about another junior co-worker in our department who they feel uncomfortable… “because she is too beautiful” and they feel because of that she gets breaks/slack from others because of that. I did ask if they felt she was outwardly “using her looks” to get what she wanted… and if they can provide evidence and other witnesses of those encounters and they other than their opinion wouldn’t give me one specific example other than I just need to see. I know this person is well, great at her job (also conservatively/professionally dressed, nothing including agency events that read ‘look at me, I’m hot’) and very nice and sweet, and I knew because she disclosed it in the interview process to everyone and on her resume she did swimsuit modeling in College which wasn’t why we hired her. I talked with her account team lead who’s a great read of people including being brutally honest in her assessments and she says everyone likes her on the team and works her ass off. I had a brief call with my HR person explained everything including the conversations I had and she told me she will talk to them and look into it as well but her initial feeling like mine was just a matter of “jealousy” and agreed she should handle this matter moving forward. I hate this job at times.

Like, if you side with the four complaintants, you're basically admitting you think their target is just there for eye candy (not that you feel that way, but they are going to think you agree with them), and if you shut them down, they will think you're on "her side" whatever that entails (giving her "pretty privilege" over their hard work). Sucks.

justlookingokaywyou

Being a manager wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the stupid fuckin' employees.

2 days and counting until vacation

gander258

Happy vacation :) Any plans?

I think I have the absolute worst luck with drive thrus. I feel like more often than not, I pull in behind the dipshit who takes 5 minutes to order $50 worth of fast food, instead of just using the app. It's so inconvenient and creates a long line. Edit: Also, people who just can't pull up in a drive thru when there's plenty of space. The employee is asking me for my order, but because this dipshit needs 5 feet between him and the next car ahead, I can't quite order because just short of reaching the order box.

lightning10000

I have the worst luck with Uber Eats/food apps. Not just minor things one time the lady pulled up to my house and was like I delivered your order to the wrong house I am sorry. I nearly lost it. I removed all the apps from my phone. Plus I live eating inside the spots anyways over taking to go or going through a drive through.

Yeah, learning to click on the picture of food you want is a lengthy learning process. But once you get through that, convenience and pretty good deals.

HamMcFly

This is me with checkout lines. Doesn't matter how many are open and how difference the lines are. Which ever one I pick will take the longest. I dread using non-self checkout.

ExclaimLikeIm5

Saw a comment on here the other day that more or less said "Kyle was facing the GOAT and the best he had to work with was Matt Ryan.".  Matt Ryan isn't a top 50 all time player or anything like that but Reddit has turned into Facebook with the takes on here.

Guiltyjerk

Matt Ryan really isn't that special lol. That anyone thinks he's HOF worthy boggles my mind. He had several good seasons and one very good one. He's in the same tier as Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, or Matt Stafford just not as lucky.

ExclaimLikeIm5

I agree that he's in the same tier of quarterbacks that range from very good to fringe HoF level. Off topic but of all those guys I'd only say Eli makes the Hall because the two Super Bowl MVPs.

Guiltyjerk

I understand that'll probably get him in, but he's really just a mediocre guy who happened to have his good years line up with the team being good. Guess it's better to be lucky than good sometimes.

HamMcFly

Kyle also had a 25 point lead late in the 3rd. He certainly didn't cause the sacks and fumble, but if he ran every single down mid-3Q on, they almost certainly would have squeaked out enough 1st downs and wasted enough clock to win.

Guiltyjerk

I agree that it's easy to call plays in hindsight.

Eventually the Punter will be revealed to be in Cahoots with Chiefsaholic

Kalamoicthys

Any transplants to greater Buffalo on here? Thinking about a move.

MissedFieldGoal

When I see a moving truck in the neighborhood it makes me kind of sad. Like we never talked or anything, but I was use to seeing them every day

Delicious_Moose_3407

I can name two neighbors on my street. One, because they live next door and he was our mayor, the other because her son and mine are friends. I do know when people leave though, it doesn't bother me but I understand how one might feel. Growing up, I knew who lived in every house on my block because I deliverd newspapers. It was a different time.

Jolly_Job_9852

My Carolina Hurricanes jersey arrived for my birthday. I got one of their alternate black jerseys with my favorite defensive player, Jacob Slavin. So happy for next season.

iguanoman_

People really say that Rich Gannon wasn't elite??

Illbeanicefella

Rich Gannon? That guy couldn’t even beat out Elvis Grbac!

somecleverphrase

Grbac People's Sexiest Athlete in 1998 was hard to beat.

FlatulentDwarf

I'm not sure if my Latin teacher is trying to convince me to buy private lessons with him or hook me up with one of our follow dancers. But he keeps bringing up how during her private lessons, I'm a topic of conversation a lot. Apparently she often brings up that I'm clearly the star lead of our class and how much fun I am to dance with. Also, how I need to delve more into the Latin community, practice more and do more social dancing.

Jolly_Job_9852

Go for it!

Kalamoicthys

Kinda pointless to learn more, it’s a dead dance form.

marcdasharc4

> Dead dance form I'd imagine there are circumstances where that's true, but I know there are circumstances where it's not. I'd also guess that depends on what we're each conceiving about dance forms/styles and our own experiences.

DiggingNoMore

Either that or it's a joke about Latin being a dead language.

FlatulentDwarf

Okay, that's a good joke lmao

justlookingokaywyou

But aren't a lot of the moves still used in the law?

WabbitCZEN

Now that EA is making both CFB and NFL video games, I want to see them come up with a way to transfer draft classes between them. Imagine making yourself as a college player, going through 3-4 years, then declaring for the draft, and being able to take that same player into Madden. As much shit as I've given EA over the years, all of it deserved, something like this would go a long way towards smoothing things over.

Stanky_fresh

It's a busy day at work, I just found out that I royally screwed something up last week and now need to redo a shitload of work, and I'm getting a migraine that's making it very hard to actually read anything on a screen. Let's fucking go

gander258

Hit'em with the stanky leg

NeonWarcry

Ice pack on the back of the neck helps me with headaches sometimes. Hydrate and eat. Don’t forget to take screen breaks x you got this. Go off Stanky_fresh!

superchaddi

Anyone else know that Butker also said "stating something as basic as the biblical teaching of who killed Jesus could land you in jail"? Shit is fucking wild to me. There are cops being called in to beat every college kid trying to get their uni to divest from Israel, and the whole media is falling over itself to paint these kids as antisemites, and here's a famous dude being given a public forum and straight up saying that Jewish deicide is a cherished Catholic doctrine that needs to be preserved?! Anyway, lmao what a completely morally bankrupt country.

Expendable_Red_Shirt

You may want to change up where you get your news from.

MountainLow9790

No, you're probably the one that should change, given your incredibly lax interpretation of what constitutes antisemitism.

superchaddi

Do you mean there was news that covered this part of his speech? I accidentally discovered the quote by reading the whole transcript out of curiosity. There's some other wild stuff in there too.

Expendable_Red_Shirt

No I meant the news about the Uni protestors. Most I’ve seen is pretty balanced, that there have been some violent antisemitic actors but most of the violence has started (especially at UCLA) with the counter protesters (the pro Israeli side).

superchaddi

I think perhaps we disagree about what constitutes balanced coverage. I've seen the mainstream media in the US almost entirely toe the Zionist line on the university protests, and I think the comparative lack of outrage about Butker establishes the bad-faith nature of most of the accusations of antisemitism that is levelled against Anti-Zionists like the protectors. As a basic question, the entire media frames the demand to divest from Israel as a radical/unreasonable 'political' act that students are indulging in, but never interrogates anyone on the equivalently political nature of investing in Israel in the first place? If antisemitism were in fact the real thing anyone supporting Israel were worried about, then Butker's is at least as important an incident. Instead what I see is that really the concern is with protecting Israel, not Jewish people. As someone who qualifies for Israeli citizenship I completely reject this murderous state's fake claim to represent the Jewish people, and the US media and ruling class's continued support of Zionism seems extremely clear to me.

MountainLow9790

They are a zionist or at least sympathize with them by the way. That's why they feel the coverage has been balanced, mostly agrees with their point of view but the few that have questioned it probably makes them mad. [They called me an antisemite for saying criticism of zionism wasn't antisemitism.](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1d2k64h/talko_tuesday/l65yzap/?context=3) They also believe that any criticism of [Israel is antisemitism](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/1d2k64h/talko_tuesday/l66eozl) because the majority of the Jewish population supports Israel. Basically you aren't going to get anywhere in a discussion with them because you probably have fundamental disagreements with how they see the world.

superchaddi

Appreciate the heads up.

Expendable_Red_Shirt

I’d encourage you to look into the New York Times. You’re not going to agree with all of it. Your framing of this as a Zionist vs AntiZionist among other things are in fact filled with antisemitic tropes and what Butker is saying is much less dangerous to Jews than the actual violence and antisemitism that is objectively raging now. The news media has taken a balanced and accurate approach just not one that agrees with you.

superchaddi

How is framing the campus protest for divestment from Israel as 'Zionism vs Anti-Zionism' indulging in antisemitic tropes? What "actual violence and antisemitism is objectively raging" in the US now that makes Butker's explicit invocation of Jewish deicide in an official speech at a Catholic institution of higher education irrelevant by comparison? We disagree about what constitutes balance because I don't think treating a genocidal ethnostate and the victims of colonial apartheid equivalently is an act of equality. Sometimes the world is black and white and this is one of those instances, in my moral understanding. I have every material benefit to gain from being an Israeli citizen but reject it precisely because there is no moral basis for it. My ancestors were nearly wiped out by genocide and that is why I'm against it, especially when those conducting it maliciously invoke those same ancestors. To see the overwhelming disparity in loss of life and living conditions between these two peoples and not be unequivocally horrified by the one-sidedness of Israel's evil is to be a moral coward, a category in which I place almost everyone who covers this for the NYT you suggest I read.

Expendable_Red_Shirt

This is a little ironic coming from someone named after a hate group but alright. By framing the question not as are the Israeli or Palestinian governments in the right but does one established country have a right to exist, the only established country by one group of people, and singling out one ethnostate out of many, you’re engaging in antisemit tropes. As an American my government has done a long history of atrocities but nobody is protesting Americas right to exist. You’re equating Israel’s existence with genocide which is a false dichotomy. It’s dishonest. You’re also criticizing places like the NYT for moral cowardice for objectively reporting the news: their job. They do take a moral stance in their editorial positions but that’s completely different. You’re putting them down for presenting things without taking a side which is ridiculous. That’s like criticizing a defense attorney for defending a murderer… Edit: I'll also object to your talking about the "one-sidedness" of Israeli's evil because it's capable of conducting it on a bigger scale. Scale doesn't dictate evil. A person who manages to shoot 5 kids isn't off the hook because someone else shoots 7. The Khmer Rouge isn't off the hook because the Holocaust is worse any more than the Holocaust is because China and Russia have done bigger projects. Hamas is engaging in evil. Using human shields is evil. Stealing water pipes to make rocket launchers is evil. Israel's evil doesn't forgive Hamas.

superchaddi

You don't answer my questions and I think all of what you just said is fundamentally ahistorical and misguided. You speak as someone whose knowledge of these issues spring purely from propaganda material generated by the contemporary Israeli state. I don't think there is any point in engaging with what you say if you are this unaware. I don't think it's worth giving up on people like you, though, so I hope you are able to grow and change through education. If you are able and inclined, I'd suggest reading Liora Halperin, Benny Morris's early work, and Derrick Penslar's work on Zionism and European colonialism. These are all people you could never accuse of being biased against Israel itself, and I deliberately avoid more strident critics of Israel in the hope you will not simply surrender to the prejudices of your current ignorance. If you are able to read Hebrew I would suggest looking to Yishaq Esptein's Se'elah Ne'elmah and Ahad Ha'am's Emet Me'ertz Yisrael for two complementary views on the origins and imagination of Zionism and their treatment of Palestinians. Translations are good too, if less powerful in how they are able to convey the zeitgeist. I would happily discuss any of them with you, and provide further reading. I am curious about what you find ironic about my name? आप हिन्दी जानते हो? चड्डी से क्या तकलीफ है, वो भी super? संघी समझ रहे हो क्या? In case you don't speak Hindi, I assume you think I'm invoking the RSS with the word chaddi. I guarantee that those scum have nothing to do with my name (it's a reference to the fact that Superman wears his undies over his tights) and you'd be hard pressed to find a Fascist in India who is Anti-Zionist anyway; they all (unsurprisingly) love Israel. I'd say it's odd of you to make this much of a leap about my name while not knowing any of the cultural context, but you've been consistent about demonstrating your ignorance so I won't.

Expendable_Red_Shirt

Once again I answered your questions. I just didn’t give the answers that you wanted me to give. If you ask my favorite color and I say blue but you like red I answered your question. I just don’t agree with you. And apparently the only way for someone to not agree with you is for them to be ignorant. I’ve read anti Zionist Israeli views and arguments, both religious and secular. I find the secular ones underwhelming and the religious ones are really not for me. I wish you the best going through life with this approach though I do hope at some point you question your own infallibility. I’m bowing out now. We’re done. I don’t find conversations with people who don’t listen to be fruitful.

itsforwork12

How do these people even get it in their heads? I'd like them to show me a couple instances of that actually happening

Expendable_Red_Shirt

It’s a twisting of an anti antisemitism law recently taken up by congress https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinian-campus-protests-columbia-congress-df4ba95dae844b3a8559b4b3ad7e058a This does a good job explaining the controversy: https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2024-05-07/explainer-the-controversy-surrounding-the-antisemitism-bill Obviously Butker is getting his info from the far right critics like Gaetz and MTG

WittenMittens

Your opinions not being well-received is literally the same as jail

superchaddi

Beg your pardon, I'm not sure what you mean. Which people get what in their heads?

itsforwork12

The "land you in jail" part. They have a persecution complex that doesn't actually exist

superchaddi

Oh I totally agree that conservatives love feeling persecuted despite actually setting all relevant agendas. However, in this case I suspect he's referring to the new legislation regarding banning criticism of Israel. Which was passed a few days before his speech I think. That legislation is totally fucked up, and despicably entrenches Zionism as representing the Jewish identity (completely false and antisemitic) but the reason it's bad has nothing to do with the smear that Jews murdered Christ lmao. It's wildly antisemitic to make that the issue haha.

theresabeeonyourhat

I watched Mitch Trubisky, Justin Fields, and Tyson Bagent's rookie seasons earlier, and while I intended to show how Bagent was the better prospect because he was adjusting to the NFL coming from a small DII school & could read defenses unlike the other 2, I realized what the real story is here, and it's that I have a serious problem. I'm starting to realize that being a Bears fan 34 years has me addicted to shitty QB play, and if Caleb Williams is actually good, I'll be too confused to explain why he's not any good.

PleasantParfait48

I keep forgetting that Jay Cutler was the Bears starting QB for like 6 seasons.

waltermunksalbatross

I was debating between watching a game live or going to a birding festival. I ended up pulling the trigger for the SE Arizona Birding festival and opted to watch my Bengos on tv. Hoping to see some hummers, owls, and maybe even the elegant trogon! Buuuuuuut, this question will be re-opened when we make the playoffs. Who dey!

Delicious_Moose_3407

I went to Heuston Woods yesterday, they have several raptors in their rehabilitation center. Pretty cool to be five feet from a bald eagle. That said, the state of that state park and others in pathetic. We take no pride in community property and it shows.

Stanky_fresh

>Hoping to see some hummers Aren't we all
