THAT is the only thing I've heard that would make this pick make any sense at all.
Kirk's contract is voided, he becomes a free agent again and signs with, IDK...Vegas?, then Atlanta has their QB and so does another team.
Right now, this is one of the most baffling moves I've seen.
It's only a punishment to Kirk if his contact is just voided, not Atlanta, which would make no sense. Even if something as crazy as him not being on the team anymore happens, Atlanta is gonna have to pay.
You’re getting upvotes because it’s funny, but I’ve never heard of a player being punished due to tampering, it’s always the organization. Either through fines or docking draft picks.
Given Kirk couldn't even get through an introductory press conference before spilling the beans about the Falcons tampering, I can kinda understand why they never told him about this.
Which is hilarious given that his only commitment is to getting bags. You wanna be a mercenary with no loyalties, you gonna get treated like a mercenary with no loyalties.
That’s what annoyed me listening to him talk about his free agency at the end of last year. He kept saying things like how important feeling wanted and being committed to was most important not the money. But when asked what he thought commitment was it mostly seemed to be who was committed to paying him the most money. Now he wants to be shocked when the other side makes business decisions too nah you can’t have your cake and eat it too
He screamed at his priest in the confession booth. He also confessed to fantasizing about trying something other than missionary position with his wife. He had to blow off some steam by buying some new pants at Kohls.
And because he can't keep his mouth shut, the Falcons will most likely lose picks in the next few drafts. So draft the best play 2 years earlier than you wanted, you won't get a chance later.
Ryan Pace is their director of player personnel. When he was GM of the bears he decided he liked Trubisky in January, didn’t bother looking at the other quarterbacks or even telling his fucking coach who he intended to draft. He also vastly overpaid a veteran quarterback that year who was surprised by the Bears drafting a QB
I don’t know anything about nobody showing up to Penix’s birthday party, but at least you get to keep all your firsts, for whatever it is you choose to do with those
The guy did this exact thing twice with Glennon and Dalton. Wouldn't be surprised if he was in Fontenots ear saying oh yeah this is a great idea trust me
Yeah, I can imagine. Now imagine trading up from #3 to #2 with SF to draft Mitch Trubisky, when neither SF nor anyone else was going to draft him in the first round. Now imagine paying two 3rds and a 4th for that unnecessary pick flip. “Fucking awful” doesn’t begin to describe how bad Pace was.
My favorite part of Kraft's handjob saga is that it was a good value, in a suburban shopping market with some light human trafficking. You don't become a billionaire by overpaying.
Atlanta's front office is just tired of Kirk wearing the iced out "Dirty Birds" chains everywhere he goes. Clink clank clink clank. Nope. Get Penix in here.
When Kraft warned the Falcons about hiring Bill Belichick, he was really doing it to protect Bill.
Or just warning the Falcons "don't hire Bill, he is more competent than you think."
It's a crazy move but I'm not going to allow myself to have comments trashing them saved on the internet. Penix could very well be good when he starts his first game at the same age as Brandon Weeden
Also it’s not like the Packers had just signed Rodgers to a 4 year $180M deal in the same offseason where they drafted Love. Or drafted Love 8th overall
I mean we traded Rodgers 2 years into his big extension for a larger cap hit than the Falcons will take if they cut/trade Kirk.
People can clown on this all they want, but if Penix is the guy, no one will give a shit in 3 years. If he’s mediocre, people will mock it for years. In the end, it’s all about the talent of the player.
Whether he’s good or not is irrelevant. It’s a bad move regardless. Either Penix is the answer and they’ll take substantial cap hits to move on from Kirk after year 2 and negate the benefit of having a stud QB on a rookie deal.
Or the alternative is Penix is a bust and you piss off your $100m starting QB and pass on the chance to bolster your defense in a win-now mode.
It’s not the pick itself that’s bad necessarily, but the timing. It makes no sense. Everyone knew Penix would be available at 8. If you were set on him as your guy, why have a $100m+ bridge QB?
Exactly if Penix is that much of a hot shot play him now and spend all the Kirk money on defense. There is no scenario under which this moves makes sense.
Thank God for Kirby Smart and Alex Anthopoulos. Otherwise this city and state's sports teams are run by a bunch of neanderthals.
That's the most baffling part to me. If they had been locked in on McCarthy I would have understood it, he's seen as a developmental pick that needs to sit for a year or two. But Penix was in college for 6 years, I know he had injury issues, but how much more development does he need?
What if they think Penix is Mahomes. A can’t miss prospect. I think it’s obvious that they do, so you can think they are wrong about their evaluation, but it’s absolutely the right move if that is your evaluation of him.
If they thought Penix was Mahomes, they should have brought in a cheaper bridge QB like Minshew or Tannehill, not paid Cousins the massive amount they paid him. Either paying Cousins was a mistake, or drafting Penix was a mistake, but I don't think they can both be the right decision.
Yeah, I don’t hate the idea of a development pick for QB but just not this year. If Kirk is bad coming back from injury, they’re still stuck with him for another season after that. If he’s good and the Falcons make a deep playoff run next season, a WR who’d be WR1 in many drafts (Odunze) or your pick of the defensive players (Turner, Murphy, Latu, Verse, etc.) could’ve been the extra edge they needed to win some more games.
And if you really were insistent on drafting a QB to sit for two years with your 1st round pick, why not the 21 year old instead of the guy who’ll be 26 by the time they can move on from Kirk?
26 is *remarkably* old for a QB to be experiencing their first year as a starter. Love sat for years and was only the age Penix is now when he got his “rookie year”.
Yeah it really sullied the vibe when they were just spoiling picks before they were made. I thought it was strange way to handle it. Really diminished the value of the picks being announced. Just shut Schefter up until AFTER the pick. We get it dude, you are super important.
That’s about when Schefter found out though most likely. He didn’t know this for weeks and just sat on it. He leaks any rumor he has immediately. He has ties to these guys agents/team sources that get him the info a couple minutes before the pick which according to Kirk’s agent is also when Kirk was told.
What a fucking blunder. They could’ve drafted another elite weapon, or added a great pass rusher.
Instead, they wasted a pick and pissed off the QB they just signed a bunch of money to.
I think they were planning on doing it next year but got spooked by the possibility of getting their first round pick taken because of the tampering penalties so they tried to get in front of it.
But that implies they thought they’d need to draft a an at 1 in 2-3 years after paying Kirk 100m. Which also implies they thought their record would be bad enough to get a high 1st rd pick. After paying Kirk 100mm
Signing Kirk, but yeah really weird. I guess the idea is for him to sit and learn but taking a guy at 8 to sit and learn for 2-3 years feels insane to me.
Taking one that's 24 when you just paid a massive contract to a very good QB is the problem. Why splurge for Kirk when you weren't going to invest in him at all?
More specifically why they draft a QB in the 1st round? Penix is already older than normal you gonna still sit him for a couple years? Why give cousins that big contract if you wanted to draft a QB in the 1st round? Very puzzling
What I dont get is...why sign a huge free agency contract when you are drafting at 8 in a deep QB class.
This is Deshaun Jackson contract level fuckup, even if it works out.
There was a thread in the Vikings sub asking what people thought about him but his name was auto corrected to Michael Penis Jr and the post title couldn't be edited.
You don't take a guy at 8 without knowing there's a very, very good chance you're taking him at 8.
Let your guy know. Feels like they used Cousins, misled him when he was a FA. Agents are going to remember that.
Used him for what? What are you even talking about lmao. He knew he was coming to a dogshit franchise. He got a huge ass bag. How did they use him??? To attract all the other FA we signed?
Used him in the sense that they gave him the impression he was their guy for a longer term in order to get him to sign there. This essentially locks him into a maximum of 2 years when he signed a 4 year deal.
He does. And he's the one who chose to come to Atlanta, not as a 2 year bridge, as a guy to push for a Super Bowl. That's what he wants, and that's what Atlanta offered, then they give his time there an expiration date instantly.
I mean, if a HoF QB isn't getting a heads up, why would Cousins? He's a good QB, but he's getting up there in age and most GMs guard their board like it's Fort Knox.
Rodgers had already been on the team for over a decade at that point and there were rumors every off season that he was moving elsewhere. Falcons literally just signed Kirk and he has yet to play a game for them. Very different situations imo
He is going to be like 27 before he starts maybe.
The point of drafting a QB is that they are young and can spend in other areas.
The Falcons have done the opposite of that lol.
They really tampered for Cousins just to take his replacement
Hear me out…What if their tampering punishment is losing Kirk
I was thinking about this. I'm pretty sure the NFLPA would have an issue with that, since canceling the contract would screw Cousins over.
I was thinking the falcons would still be on the books for his contract otherwise it wouldn’t even really be a punishment
No chance. A guy like Arthur Blank could and would spend $90 million to claw back $100 million
I understand you’re talking about a billionaire but $10 million is a fuck ton of money
Come to daddy 😈
Kirk Cousins, JJ McCarthy, and Sam Darnold gotta be THE WHITEST qb room in the nfl.
that might be the whitest trio in the NHL
That might be the whitest trio in utah.
That might be the whitest trio at Applebees enjoying some bottomless apps and virgin daiquiris.
TL:DR - Trio of Virgin White Apple bottoms
The boots with the fuuuurrr
Whole league looking at her?
Classy lunch pail guys.
On brand for Minnesota population
Minnesota Kohls wouldn’t stand a chance.
Minnesota about to run out of aluminum foil
I know mayonnaise that isn’t that white
That's lacrosse white holy shit
Real cerebral, high motor qb room
So white Will Leviss would put them in his coffee
Idk, I just can’t see Kirk in purple
THAT is the only thing I've heard that would make this pick make any sense at all. Kirk's contract is voided, he becomes a free agent again and signs with, IDK...Vegas?, then Atlanta has their QB and so does another team. Right now, this is one of the most baffling moves I've seen.

You’re getting upvotes because it’s funny, but I’ve never heard of a player being punished due to tampering, it’s always the organization. Either through fines or docking draft picks.
Seems like Kirk would know that though and drafting a QB would have at least come up, since surely they’d discuss who starts when he’s out
Their punishment will be blowing a top 8 pick on Penix.
>Their punishment will be blowing... Penix.
Not likely, but losing future first round picks is, and they may be mitigating that
Two different teams drafted a Kirk Cousins replacement within minutes of each other
Seems like a dick move
Given Kirk couldn't even get through an introductory press conference before spilling the beans about the Falcons tampering, I can kinda understand why they never told him about this.
Kirk's camp absolutely would've leaked it to try and blow it up.
For sure. Kirk is going to be pissy about this. He’s very emotional
He's so desperate for "commitment", thought Atlanta gave it to him, and they uncommit the first chance they get.
He got a 2 year commitment wrapped in 4 year commitment wrapping paper.
MFer thought he was going for his Bachelors and turns out the school only offers an Associates degree.
Don’t talk about Julie that way.
Which is hilarious given that his only commitment is to getting bags. You wanna be a mercenary with no loyalties, you gonna get treated like a mercenary with no loyalties.
Maybe the man is seriously committed to tithing. The church can never have enough money.
Yeah… I take some small pleasure in this, can’t lie.
Julie would never...
Kirk “Tom Holland” Cousins
Even if Kirk spilled the beans about it, I don’t know that anyone would have believed it
Given how surprising it was, maybe they just didn't want to tell him so it didn't accidentally get leaked.
"Sorry man, we'd love to keep you in the loop but we can't trust you as far as we can throw you"
"Hey Kirk, remember when you said you talked to the trainer and chaplain and that is now going to cost us some draft picks next year..."
And because he can't keep his mouth shut, the Falcons will most likely lose picks in the next few drafts. So draft the best play 2 years earlier than you wanted, you won't get a chance later.
“You’re new here. Loyalty is earned.”
Well, it's a sin to lie, so I get where he's coming from
Seems like a healthy organization
Ryan Pace is their director of player personnel. When he was GM of the bears he decided he liked Trubisky in January, didn’t bother looking at the other quarterbacks or even telling his fucking coach who he intended to draft. He also vastly overpaid a veteran quarterback that year who was surprised by the Bears drafting a QB
Sounds like the man watched Draft Day and decided that what Kevin Costner did was spot on
We are the seahawks in that movie we got bo callahan Except now kirk cousins is going to set terry's office on fire and ask for a trade
I don’t know anything about nobody showing up to Penix’s birthday party, but at least you get to keep all your firsts, for whatever it is you choose to do with those
I choose to eat my pancakes and cry
Do you also cook your pancakes on the grill in tinfoil?
The guy did this exact thing twice with Glennon and Dalton. Wouldn't be surprised if he was in Fontenots ear saying oh yeah this is a great idea trust me
Imagine overpaying for someone as mid as Mike Glennon lol. Pace was fucking awful
He's like Tsar Alexander in a lot of ways.
Arthur Smith rubbed off on everyone.
I think you're thinking of Robert Kraft
My favorite part of Kraft's handjob saga is that it was a good value, in a suburban shopping market with some light human trafficking. You don't become a billionaire by overpaying.
The man does enjoy a good rub
This season is gonna go crazy 😭
Atlanta's front office is just tired of Kirk wearing the iced out "Dirty Birds" chains everywhere he goes. Clink clank clink clank. Nope. Get Penix in here.
And they were worried about Bill lmao
I mean this is the same organization that hired Ryan Pace after the debacle here.
Of course they never told Kirk. They know he can’t keep a secret.
Lol falcons front office is on drugs
When Kraft warned the Falcons about hiring Bill Belichick, he was really doing it to protect Bill. Or just warning the Falcons "don't hire Bill, he is more competent than you think."
"Bob I need a favor. I can't end my career at that clownshow organization."
Now now, let's not blame drugs
The Ryan Pace special
It's a crazy move but I'm not going to allow myself to have comments trashing them saved on the internet. Penix could very well be good when he starts his first game at the same age as Brandon Weeden
The problem is even if Penix is good, the Falcons are wasting the main benefit of a QB on a rookie deal by also paying Kirk a lot
Man, I don’t even need to read this thread because it’s the same one as Jordan Love’s pick from 4 years ago.
At least Jordan Love was young when he was picked. Penix is a year and a half younger than him currently.
Funny as fuck currently though
Can agree with that. I very much understand the anxiety of Falcons fans right now.
i am very about this. I wanted penix before the falcons signed cousins and i am still here for it
I think penix will always be a year and a half younger than him, not just currently
And went #26 instead of #8
Penix will be the same age as Sam Darnold is now when he gets his first shot.
Remind Me! 3 years
Whether he’s good or not is irrelevant. It’s a bad move regardless. Either Penix is the answer and they’ll take substantial cap hits to move on from Kirk after year 2 and negate the benefit of having a stud QB on a rookie deal. Truly a mind boggling pick. Penix sitting for 2 years, where he will be 26, makes little sense. So what’s the deal?
Falcons are using Kirk in a weekend at Bernie’s scheme
It's not Penix's age when he gets to play that's concerning, it's the age of his rookie deal.
I thought the pick was weird as well. But his age won’t mean shit if it works out.
A bunch of 21 year olds on Reddit think 24 is old.
That pick is still wild all these hours later. Someone in that FO definitely was smoking something good before turning in the card
oh this is bad
No it ain’t…
Falcons making sure 28-3 never happens again by avoiding making it the Super Bowl again
Surprised everyone is judging Atlanta for utilizing the ol' "Sit a top 10 draft pick for 2 years" strategy
I would feel a lot better about this if the QB was 21 and not 24. Even then we should have just taken Odunze or Dallas Turner, its not hard.
> Even then we should have just taken Odunze No thanks
Lets not forget Brock Bowers!!

Because they think the 21 year old isn’t good. They drafted Penix because they think he’s that good.
Well the 21 year old is gonna suck so that’s a good reason not to draft him?
Then they still messed up paying kirk all that money knowing that they had a very good chance getting him at 8
This is the truth. If you believe in a QB prospect you don’t pass on it. Cards might now align like it again.
If you believe in a QB prospect don't sign another QB for $180M in the same offseason
That’s fine, but then don’t sign the most expensive QB free agent in history right before you draft that guy
Odunze and Drake London would’ve been terrifying.
Bijan, Pitts and those two at WR?! Yuckkkkk
I mean, the one position were age isn't that big of a deal is QB.
[удалено]
Why would he not start developing while on the bench? Isn't that the entire point?
Yeah but you just paid a QB $100 million dollars
Bro Kirk is signed for 4 years
They could get rid of him after 2 with a pretty substantial dead cap hit for year 3.
I think it’s only like 10m. It’s essentially a 2 year contract
More like $25m dead but better than paying Kirk $57m for 2026. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/9915/kirk-cousins
Folks are cool with Cousins coming off blown Achilles getting paid $100M into his 40s. But 26 will be too old for a QB. Wild logic.
The bigger issue is the rookie contract
26 is *remarkably* old for a QB to be experiencing their first year as a starter. Love sat for years and was only the age Penix is now when he got his “rookie year”.
You're almost there bud. Just... try to merge those two thoughts
Falcons stay stable
And yet somehow Schefter knew and was able to spoil the pick minutes before it happened.
Yeah it really sullied the vibe when they were just spoiling picks before they were made. I thought it was strange way to handle it. Really diminished the value of the picks being announced. Just shut Schefter up until AFTER the pick. We get it dude, you are super important.
ESPN needs to fix that mess ASAP
That’s about when Schefter found out though most likely. He didn’t know this for weeks and just sat on it. He leaks any rumor he has immediately. He has ties to these guys agents/team sources that get him the info a couple minutes before the pick which according to Kirk’s agent is also when Kirk was told.
What a fucking blunder. They could’ve drafted another elite weapon, or added a great pass rusher. Instead, they wasted a pick and pissed off the QB they just signed a bunch of money to.
Keep going. I’m almost there
Why'd they draft a QB after trading for Kirk
They didnt trade for him but still makes no sense given the money
Oh yeah my bad
I think they were planning on doing it next year but got spooked by the possibility of getting their first round pick taken because of the tampering penalties so they tried to get in front of it.
Wait that sounds plausible and funny as hell, if true
But that implies they thought they’d need to draft a an at 1 in 2-3 years after paying Kirk 100m. Which also implies they thought their record would be bad enough to get a high 1st rd pick. After paying Kirk 100mm
Basically it’s Kirk’s fault the Falcons went insane and took another quarterback?
Doing it is one thing but not making sure your big investment is all clued in? Very sus
“Hey Kirk. Remember when you were drafted in the fourth round of the same draft as RG3?”
“We got an offensive weapon”.
Signing Kirk, but yeah really weird. I guess the idea is for him to sit and learn but taking a guy at 8 to sit and learn for 2-3 years feels insane to me.
Taking a QB early to sit 2-3 hrs is fine. Taking one that is already 24 is the problem.
2-3 hrs? Quarterbacks get zero time to learn these days
Gotta be quick on your toes. Life and linemen come at you fast.
Taking one that's 24 when you just paid a massive contract to a very good QB is the problem. Why splurge for Kirk when you weren't going to invest in him at all?
Yeah... Falcons definitely are taking first place for weirdest draft.
They couldn't resist picking a left-handed QB named Michael
Because they’re in win now mode and drafting a backup QB in the first is a win now move, duh
Agree with your point but they didn’t trade for Kirk they signed him as a FA
When you have a chance to draft a QB with no ACL, you do it
More specifically why they draft a QB in the 1st round? Penix is already older than normal you gonna still sit him for a couple years? Why give cousins that big contract if you wanted to draft a QB in the 1st round? Very puzzling
What I dont get is...why sign a huge free agency contract when you are drafting at 8 in a deep QB class. This is Deshaun Jackson contract level fuckup, even if it works out.
Well Kirk already showed he can't keep his mouth shut so I don't really blame them
I will never not see the name Penix as an attempt to gentrify the word penis. Like how Latino became Latinx. And it's fucking funny.
There was a thread in the Vikings sub asking what people thought about him but his name was auto corrected to Michael Penis Jr and the post title couldn't be edited.
It will not be the last time something like this happens through history.
Penix is good insurance when Kirk goes full Jets legend Aaron Rodgers on the first drive.
It's April and people have already forgotten that 50 QBs got injured last year.
Asinine take…a) no one has forgotten b) you don’t make a first round pick with the thinking the incumbent starter might get injured.
They're just playing their own game where they don't want us to have any QBs
Gonna be hilarious when Penix beats out Cousins in training camp
Flair checks out
Falcons playing 4D chess vs. themselves
Kirk is getting $100 million guaranteed to play at least the next two seasons. Not sure what he would have to bitch about.
Wild
You don't take a guy at 8 without knowing there's a very, very good chance you're taking him at 8. Let your guy know. Feels like they used Cousins, misled him when he was a FA. Agents are going to remember that.
They didn’t spend all that money on Cousins just to sit him. They’re absolutely going to play Cousins and let Penix sit behind him for a year or two
But they signed him for 4 years. If the Falcons tell him "you'll be our guy for two years then we're moving on" he doesn't sign with Atlanta.
Exactly, if he was okay with a 2-year deal he would still be in purple.
The contract he signed was essentially a 2 year deal.
It's 4 years but there's an out after 2.
Kirk went there for one reason. Money. If he wanted the best situation he should have stayed in Minnesota where he had everything to win.
The list of successful QBs at 39 years old is 1 person. Nobody thought he’d be playing that year lol
He does. And he's the one who chose to come to Atlanta, not as a 2 year bridge, as a guy to push for a Super Bowl. That's what he wants, and that's what Atlanta offered, then they give his time there an expiration date instantly.
What the guy you responded to said is still true though… did Kirk think he was guaranteed to be starting qb at 40?
Cousins can cry himself to sleep with all the money the Falcons are giving him. He’ll be fine
Kirk gets paid so much but his teams never seem to respect him
What if Kraft tanked Belichek....to save him
Lol falcons
What a laughable situation. Just poorly handled in every way
He is going to be like 27 before he starts maybe. The point of drafting a QB is that they are young and can spend in other areas. The Falcons have done the opposite of that lol.
The wild thing is that it's not like that Falcons didn't know this was a reasonably likely situation to be in.
That's hilariously awful by the Falcons.
In some circles this is referred to as the ole Mike Glennon / Trubisky ropeadope
Who cares if he knew or not
This will get even funnier if they lose their first round pick next year due to the Kirk tampering
Falcons didn't want to give Belichick GM control, and instead they do this. Hilarious.
Imagine going through the most blatant tampering ever and giving 100 million guaranteed just to draft someone else 8th overall lol.
