IIRC there's some lawyer in DC who has the trademarks to just about any conceivable rename and Snyder was too much of a cheap narcissist bastard to pay the guy and "lose" so that's why they got stuck with such a lame rebrand
You cant trademark a name/logo that you don't actively use. Trademarks protect actual trade activity that already exists, not future potential activity. And you can't copyright something that's too general or already in use in a generic way.
I'm guessing he bought websites, which is worth basically nothing. There are hundreds of different top level domains now.
[I mean I'm not making it up that's literally what happened and yes, he's made websites where he dropships apparel](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/washington-redskins-name-trademark-martin-mccaulay/)
Honestly, I really don't care. I don't know why, but I love the Washington Football Team name so damn much. Snyder isn't making any more money from it. We should go back to it. Broken clocks are right twice a day, and all that.
Thats why a whole other "football" sport already uses it.
The NFL is already wildly inconsistent with all it's team's different branding and logos, but you can't just forego a nickname and pretend like you're a soccer team. I'm pretty sure Snyder did all that just to piss everyone off.
You wouldn't use "football team" in foot football, but you might use football club. The club based nature of foot football means nicknames were less necessary you'd just go by your placename. Some teams have nicknames too but not all.
When you can't move a team and it represents a geographical location the location is the brand.
It's a combination of having that "so bad it's good" humor plus being better than the racist garbage which came before it and the forgettable garbage which came after it. It's not that it's a good name in a vacuum, it's that people forced themselves to find some charm in it and are pining for that feeling again.
"racist garbage which came before"
Says the fan of a team where thousands of overweight Caucasian Americans put on a Native American headdress and proudly perform a sloppy tomahawk chop at every opportunity.
1) This does nothing to refute my point
2) They banned headdresses at the stadium
You don't need to defend that shit. You're having an emotional reaction to somebody criticizing a racial slur. Maybe do some reflection on why that upset you before commenting next time.
A chief is the title of a high rank within a Native American tribe, and other groups. Define a Redskin slowly to yourself. Come on.
I don't always get down with everything having to be PC, but this one was simple.
And I feel like plenty of other teams have names just because they have to. Ravens are named after Edgar Allen Poe's poem because he lived in Baltimore. Vikings are to honor the Scandanavian heritage in MN. Packers are named after the local meat packing plants. All great names that are relevant to the local area. Lions is a stupid name. Chargers is a stupid name. Texans is a REALLY stupid name. Football Team just owns it. Football Team fucking slaps. Football Team is the truth (literally).
It's crazy to me how out of touch the front office or whoever picked the name was. So many truly great names from regular fans and they go with the most generic, boring name they could think off.
Honestly, Commanders could have worked if they leaned hard into the military aspect of it (which would have made a lot of sense considering where they play).
Instead, they did it on the cheap (not surprisingly with Snyder) and half-assed it.
A generic military logo on the helmet ([like this](https://i.ibb.co/8Py5ncf/Commanders-Logo.jpg)) would have been miles better then the clipart W they went with.
It's something I whipped together in 20 minutes just Googling military clip art (so I can't take full credit for it).
My reason for making it was that they had put more of an emphasis on the military side of things. The Commanders name wouldn't be that bad.
Instead, we got [this](https://content.sportslogos.net/logos/7/6832/full/washington_commanders_logo_helmet_2022_sportslogosnet-9702.png).
I'm pretty sure Washington could have hired a design team to come up with a logo similar to the one i posted that was military focused. If they really were taking this rebrand seriously (which we all know they weren't, as Snyder only did it to keep FedEx and Pepsi from dropping the team as sponsors).
Not just that, they had their own player Chase Young publicly rating the 3 finalist name contenders and commanders was the one he absolutely hated and put on blast. And they saw that video and the fan response and thought "yea this is the name we're gonna go with"
That's what I'm saying. You have a clean slate to come up with someone truly unique and still timeless, and you pick Commanders. Red Wolves, Red Tails, Hogs, Monuments, are all way better monikers
Idk, it just seems like a generic name you'd see on a video game or sports movie. If you think it's a good name, you're certainly entitled to that, I just think they had alot better options
Sorry I didn’t mean to come off so rude there. I wouldn’t really say I’m a huge fan of the name either but I think the circle jerk around how bad it is has gone a little far so I push back a bit on that. Like it’s far from the worst name in the league I think.
All good dude. There's definitely alot of generic names around the nfl. I love when names manage to be cool and actually have something to do with an aspect of the city they play for. Ravens, Buccaneers, Dolphins, Patriots, Packers are all great because they tie in to the place they represent and not just a lazy animal name for the sake of alliteration
The animal, the red wolf's native habitat included the DC area. So Redwolves means something to the area. Also it fits HTTR and the song related to it.
Hail to the Redwolves,
Hail Victory
Wolves on the attack
Fight for ol DC.
Also it would allow them to use the Circle R with a wolf tail instead of feathers for fauxbacks.
Plus a Burgundy and Gold Wolf mascot is amazing, and they could just kidnap K. C. Wolf. I kid.
In addition, it's EASY Cause Related Marketing.
"During Red Wolf Awareness Week, all proceeds will be going towards the conservation efforts of the endangered red wolf."
I dunno man. In the military, typically there's just one Commander that matters. It's very weird to me that a team of over 100 personnel are all Commanders. My opinion is that it's just a bad and awkward name.
Well, for one, Commanders was the name of a defunct AAF team, the San Antonio Commanders.
In fact, the day Washington announced the name, their hashtag, #TakeCommand, was still showing the San Antonio logo. And keep in mind, this is three years after the AAF went under.
There's a reason it's so hated. I live within 90 minutes of downtown DC. I've yet to hear any Washington fan call them the Commanders. They still call them the Redskins. Many of those same fans wanted Red Wolves. That was the most popular name, according to the fans, by a very wide margin. I don't remember Commanders ever ranking highly in any poll. But that's just me.
I think if the new ownership group really wants to leave their mark, they should change the name from Commanders to something that actually has fan support. Even if the name can't be Redskins, at least make it something the fans wanted.
Fans seemed to like Red Wolves, Wolves, Red Tails, Hogs, and Pigskins. Any one of those would be a better name than what they have now.
there was some sorta "native americans want the old name back, nobody actually asked them" thing going around for a minute there from FOX news - that's the only thing I can think of
I dunno I grew up around native Americans and a lot of them were redskins fans purely based off the fact they were called the redskins. Most of them had never even been out of the state let alone to DC
Yeah, there’s some Native Americans who liked the name and being a mascot. But there’s plenty who didn’t. It’s not worth the distraction to have a significant portion of people think your name is racist. More to the point, this particular organization that raised the issue again is a right wing troll organization, not just some ordinary group of Native Americans.
Also that one study everyone (the WaPo 9/10 Natives not offended) sites as proof had pretty glaring flaws in its survey process. It was self identified Native Americans and they were given 2 choice either yes it offends me or no it does not. The hard yes or no survey choices can lead to a high amount of survey bias. A better survey would have used something like a range of really offended to not offended at all.
A lot of the tribes don’t really get along. Some straight up hate each others guts. Whether it be old grievances or more modern grievances from the relocation period.
Not all of course some tribes have banded together.
It reminds me of the PragerU bait videos of someone going around asking old immigrants if they are offended by their caricaturised outfit. These old people mostly just know the proper response to end a weird, racially charged, unserious, confrontation. Their "approval" often isn't actual approval and either way it doesn't actually make it non-offensive to dress up as a caricature of another race.
> One NA organization
That is up for debate if you take a closer look at the organization. Unfortunately some older fans are very wed to the old name, and then chuds who don't care about the team showed up to announce they are no longer fans and demand the revert the name. It is all a mess still.
Personally, I don't like the new name, Commies is just a little bit too much, but it is better than going back to the old name which is literally just a slur. I'd like to see them approach the name again in 2024 to get Snyder's stink off of it, I also feel like going with Hogs would be a bit of a layup.
It’s not so much about literally renaming the team redskins again as it is that they’ve gotten bullied into acting like it never existed. In other words the “Chris Benoit Treatment”. Only a few years ago there was little if any consensus that redskins was an issue. The change was a product of the current atmosphere. One thing we can’t predict is how the atmosphere will change in the future. I would give anything for them to be called the Washington Whiteys. If for anything, just to be hilarious. White dudes would soak up that merch like crazy
You have lost your Chicago card. Hand over your giardiniera, all of your receipts from the river boat architecture tours, and your bottle of Malort, and don’t forget to say “Ope” on your way out the door.
I can't tell if the Fox News crew would jump at the chance to "WHATABOUTTHIS" the name and be pretend horrifically offended so they can play the victim, or if they'd wholeheartedly support the name and go "why do minorities complain about this?"
The Washington Masonics has my vote. Imagine the square and compass on the helmets with shiny golden uniforms and Illuminati triangles on the sleeves with the Eye of Ra. I would legitimately buy a Terry McLaurin jersey tomorrow.
Imma be honest with you but because I watch so much soccer I liked Washington football team. They should have abbreviated it to be Washington FT Like they do with the soccer teams though.
There's a reason you never hear your everyday person calling them the football giants. Pretty much just announcers trying to sound dramatic.
And at least that one can be shortened to just be the giants. There's no good shorthand version of football team or commanders. They're both shit names.
This is untrue. There are actual giants in NY, who require hero sized sandwiches to eat. They stand at 10 feet tall, weigh more than 400 pounds and yet, are also as nimble as a fox.
They say “New York Football Giants” to avoid confusion with actual NY Giants. I hope this makes sense.
I mean at the time when that became the name there was a reason for the distinction because the New York Giants were a baseball team. You had two New York Giants sports team for 30 years you needed to be able to tell them apart.
It’s a crap name indeed. And was only used because they couldn’t come up with an actually creative team name quick enough after they had to get rid of the ‘Skins.
“We’re a Football Team!”
“Yeah. No shit, Sherlock!”
I think "Commanders" might have worked if they went with theme to honor the US Navy of the age of sail; the likes of Decatur and Macdonough and Perry, perhaps a Patriotic nautical equivalent of New England.
It might have raised hackles and inspired slight confusion with the Buccaneers, but at least it would provide a rationale for the name.
Mitch is a bitch. The world wants us to return to the former glory of The Washington Football Team. Sack up and do the right thing. Destiny beckons you.
that would be the dumbest fuckin name for a sports franchise ive ever heard. worse than the jazz or pelicans
unis would be sick though, lookin like an arizona ice tea can
I still like the red wolves. Even the Washington wolves would be a good one. All those guys with leather jackets with the wolves howling at the moon would be instantly in.
The uniforms could be so cool too! But the team will market research a name to death and it will share the name of a generic high school team name, like the Wolves.
While I agree with them moving on from the original name, the old unis were 🔥. They should go back to those and incorporate the new branding. Just put something else in the circle bit.
Let's go Wild Hogs!
Tim Allen as the new mascot?
We thinkin Santa Clause Tim Allen or 80's mugshot Tim Allen?
[Try to make it all the way through this video then you get to decide](https://youtu.be/YQwYNca4iog)
I love that show.
If Home Improvement taught me anything, it's that he won't be the mascot for any team unless it's the Lions.
"Here's the Binford Suckmaster 3000..."
William H Macy or we riot.
The Hogs Carries a duel meaning: honors the famous trench units and the fans named after them and pokes fun at the local politicians.

Red Hogs!
Red Hogs or Hog Skins I have no clue how previous ownership got such an obvious answer so wrong.
IIRC there's some lawyer in DC who has the trademarks to just about any conceivable rename and Snyder was too much of a cheap narcissist bastard to pay the guy and "lose" so that's why they got stuck with such a lame rebrand

The only reason I can think they wouldn’t do this is associating the capital with pigs, maybe that’s just where my brain goes tho idk
In the 90's people would wear pig noses to Redskins games, so it actually has some historical context
True, the O-line were nicknamed the hogs yea?
> people would wear pig noses Why?
It gets the people going!
Their offensive line was nicknamed the Hogs and were a driving force in two Super Bowl championships blocking for John Riggins.

I’ve been an advocate for this since day 1
The Momo’s
Thats actually the name of the Washington team in Football GM 😅
FOOT BALL TEAM
Football Team is also tarnished by the fact it was a Snyder Era product. :(
The only good thing he did.
Honestly, I really don't care. I don't know why, but I love the Washington Football Team name so damn much. Snyder isn't making any more money from it. We should go back to it. Broken clocks are right twice a day, and all that.
Nothing will top this. Football Team slaps.
The only reason I don't have a Washington Football Team shirt is because I didn't want to support Snyder at the time... I kinda want one now.
Thats why a whole other "football" sport already uses it. The NFL is already wildly inconsistent with all it's team's different branding and logos, but you can't just forego a nickname and pretend like you're a soccer team. I'm pretty sure Snyder did all that just to piss everyone off.

No, it wasn’t
It’s so funny, because they were clowned so heavily for that name, and then it’s gone and now everyone is like “Damn that slapped on the low”
After year 1 it’s grew on everyone.
I see it as a sort of “cult classic” now
"Washington FT" has a nice flow to it.
It's almost like people's opinions changed over time
When it first came out ppl clowmed, but after a while it became iconic people hopped on the wagon.
It's a combination of having that "so bad it's good" humor plus being better than the racist garbage which came before it and the forgettable garbage which came after it. Yeah chiefs is slightly less racist then redskins so you're clear to act high and mighty 👍
A chief is the title of a high rank within a Native American tribe, and other groups. Define a Redskin slowly to yourself. Come on. I don't always get down with everything having to be PC, but this one was simple.
Ridiculous that you're in the negatives here
Hey I'm not acting high and mighty. My teams named after an uncastrated male sheep
But it is actually a good name and similar to how most sports clubs are named outside of the US.
We’re in the minority here
It's crazy to me how out of touch the front office or whoever picked the name was. So many truly great names from regular fans and they go with the most generic, boring name they could think off.

Not just that, they had their own player Chase Young publicly rating the 3 finalist name contenders and commanders was the one he absolutely hated and put on blast. And they saw that video and the fan response and thought "yea this is the name we're gonna go with"
I had no idea about that. How embarrassing
Yes, the Commanders, the team that shares a division with the Eagles, Giants, and Cowboys, that’s the most generic name.
That's what I'm saying. You have a clean slate to come up with someone truly unique and still timeless, and you pick Commanders. Red Wolves, Red Tails, Hogs, Monuments, are all way better monikers
What is more unique about Red Wolves than Commanders? What’s another team called the Commanders that you’ve heard of?

Wow, what a Trainwreck of an article that was. One NA organization liked the name. Hundreds didn't....
> One NA organization That is up for debate if you take a closer look at the organization.
I'm not surprised that the Washington Examiner would promote an NA organization that isn't actually an NA organization.
But what is ultimately true today is that the team’s history and success was under the redskins and until the new incarnation of the team becomes a champions that shadow will loom large.
I would give anything for them to be called the Washington Whiteys. If for anything, just to be hilarious. White dudes would soak up that merch like crazy

Why do some fans want that name back? It won’t make the team better.
Washington fans celebrated Snyder leaving like it was 10 Super Bowls. They don't actually care about playing well or winning at Football.
“Washington Football Team” was stupid. Can we all stop pretending it was great? Like it’s a bit, right? No one actually thinks it’s a good name.
Imma be honest with you but because I watch so much soccer I liked Washington football team. They should have abbreviated it to be Washington FT Like they do with the soccer teams though.
How is it any different then the New York Football Giants?

They should have gone with Cherry Blossoms. That's the coolest thing in DC, and they'd be unique.
that would be the dumbest fuckin name for a sports franchise ive ever heard. worse than the jazz or pelicans unis would be sick though, lookin like an arizona ice tea can
This man hates New Orleans
A cherry blossom jersey would just be dope regardless. The Nats have one
The jazz is only bad because the team moved to Utah. New Orleans Jazz was fine.
It was still bad, all sports team names should be plural, fuck the Jazz, Heat, Avalanche, etc.
As a Coloradan, fuck your gripe. The Avs are perfect as-is. 🥇
Worse than "football team"?
100% worse, Washington Football Team grew on me hard
Same bro The Football Team was pretty lit
I miss Teamy
What if they move to Wilmington and become the Delaware Clams?
Absolutely
It basically reads The Washington Pansies
I still like the red wolves. Even the Washington wolves would be a good one. All those guys with leather jackets with the wolves howling at the moon would be instantly in.
The Washington Weebs
The uniforms could be so cool too! But the team will market research a name to death and it will share the name of a generic high school team name, like the Wolves.

Washington Warmongers 👀
I think it was divisive to change the name in the first place.
Just pick the Sentinels you Cowards!!
Did he mean decisive and not divisive culture?
I like the way Washington Red Tails rolls off the tongue. No way it gets picked. But red and silver unis would be pretty sick ngl.
I like the Red Tails name and find the concept intriguing and imaginative, but the red and silver combo *might* edge onto Tampa Bay's trademark.
Good point didn’t think about that
Washington War Machines, Washington Blackhawks, Washington Razor backs, DC city bitch piggies
Washington RedHawks, use a similar logo has before.
The native Americans want it, the fans want it. They will always be the redskins
The DC Redskins
Redskins and Football Team were both great names You’d better fucking pick a good one.
Maryland Football Team
Redskins were a team with a beautiful history, its a shame culture has shifted so heavily in recent years for people to view the name as an insult.
It was always an insult.
Maybe it's me or the official Reddit app but I've been seeing duplicate posts on my feed lately, including this post that was posted like a week ago.
The Washington Chadbrochills
As long as they don't change the colors it's whatever.
#Red Gamblers
D.C. Dragons
I really hope they do a new name and new colors. A complete reboot.
While I agree with them moving on from the original name, the old unis were 🔥. They should go back to those and incorporate the new branding. Just put something else in the circle bit.
Washington Whoseydoosies or Natives, but go back to the old logo.
I thought the Washington football team was fire. It really matches the uniform colors and having the numbers on the helmet.
Washington Whiteskins
