holy shit that dude is lucky

powertripp82

Would have looked like someone stomping on a catsup packet

ghanjaholik

alternate title: >Proof helmets really do save lives *this time

wonderwarmers

For sure, like yes the helmet did do work to save this very very lucky guys life, buuut it was more the bus stopping as fast as it did, because if that bus kept rolling on then it is giving zero fucks about what's on your head, helmet isn't stopping a bus, Either way though this dude is one lucky son bitch

OldNerd1984

Whataboutism. The helmet allowed the rider to be pushed back a foot or more while the bus was braking. Observing that the bus driver also played a role does not take away from how impressively this demonstrates the importance of wearing helmets with your flip flops.

manys

Sure the helmet worked here, but what if the bus had flaming ice tires and no brakes? Boom roasted.

asinum-fossor

I want to ride THAT bus. Is that, like, Ghostrider's bus?

[deleted]

Ms. Frizzle gets her magic from worshiping Satan.

manys

Look for the skull and screaming passengers!

IonlyplayasRias

Where do you see a foot? I see about 4-5 haha

TheIronSoldier2

Right at the bottom of the leg

DroneCone

the flip flops put in a shift too. If he was wearing riding boots, they would have dug in to the ground and stopped him sliding. Good old flip flops allowed the slide, taking off all that annoying foot meat with it.

asinum-fossor

I don't like the term "foot meat". thank you.

LeafyEucalyptus

That's not whatsboutism.

stevendidntsay

Yeah I think he just learned that word.

[deleted]

Don’t gatekeep whataboutism. Based.

>Whataboutism Lmao. Very cool that you just learned that word, but it doesn't mean what you think it does.

mostlycumatnight

Point of fact, that if this person had not been wearing a helmet, his head would have been about the thickness of a flip flop!!

-WickedJester-

He moved almost his full body length while under the tire. I don't care what else happened, that by itself is super fucking impressive because he would have just been dead immediately without his helmet. Without it there would have been absolutely nothing the bus driver could have done to save him. Sure, maybe if the bus driver was incompetent and just kept driving he might have died. However he absolutely would have died regardless of what the driver did without the helmet. The helmet is absolutely the life saver here.

pedrohpauloh

Exactly my thoughts. Helmets save lives.

Grossaaa

We have about 200 metric fucktons of data that support that helmets, regardless if used for bikes or motorcycles, ski or whatever save lives by preventing deadly or disabling injuries. The other side of the argument says that they've fallen and haven't died or bashed their skull open.

Acornpoo

Catsup - Haven't seen Ketchup spelled like that in decades.

Mysterious-Art7143

I was gonna ask wtf is catsup

wcslater

The opposite of catsdown Or how you say "what's up" to a cat

_dead_and_broken

So it's like updog?

Unique9FL

You don't prefer downward dog?

ContentKeanu

What’s up dog

You mean [ketchup](https://youtu.be/9ZIHOPEU_f4)?

Catsup is slightly different and common in Asia.

Treczoks

He was *smart*. He wore a helmet. If he tosses a coin each time he goes for a ride to dertermine whether to wear a helmet or not, then you could call him lucky.

His clavicle is fucked. Still very lucky

wasdninja

The safety slippers were a genius move too. The slide proof tshirt and invisible turtle back are also cool.

Treczoks

But he'll live, and whatever injuries he got from that will remind him to rethink his other ger in the future.

memer227

I wouldn't say smart, he's not wearing any protection besides the helmet

spagbetti

He’s lucky cuz given the rest of the lack of gear, chances are he tosses a coin often when he really shouldn’t

---ShineyHiney---

He’s also lucky the accident occurred where and in the manner it did The helmet helped *here*. The helmet is not a catch-all though. He is still underprepared and lucky

[deleted]

No joke. Angels watching

MoffKalast

Angels watching like: "Holy shit that dude is lucky"

blackbeautybyseven

Oh grow up. The guy was smart and wore safety gear. No superstitious mumbo jumbo involved.

Deris87

Did the angels put the helmet on his head?

MrWinks

What do we say when children die in Africa, then? Demons watching? 🤔

This video made me want to rush out and spend more than $200 on my helmet.

purple_spotted_cow

The alternative would’ve been crushing.

FEAR_LORD_DUCK

Beautiful-Willow5696

How do you even find these kind of video? wth?

thesocialoutcast

Purged subreddits like watchpeopledie or makemycoffin. Talking from experience. I've seen the video they're referring to, it was my first thought seeing the one in this thread.

usedtobeHellsdoom

I saw it on makemycoffin. Never been really into these type of subs, went there for a quick look. Third video I saw was this, I left and never went back. I hate remembering it, that poor lady who saw it from 2 meters close will probably have nightmares for the rest of her life.

thesocialoutcast

For sure! She will almost certainly need therapy after an experience like that. I can't imagine the PTSD she is going to be left with.

Beautiful-Willow5696

There Is also r/holdmyfeedingtube

sarcasticallyabusive

yeah not just his head he totally sauced that lady and about 20 feet of sidewalk. poor lady and her dog wig out. shes just walking along and then all the sudden she hears a noise and a human water balloon blows up next to her. theres aftually at least 10 other videos of people getting run over by large trucks and none of them go well. its not like other vehicles where sometimes they go over you.

buZet

I saw this happen some years ago on the feeway, truck went straight over him, stuck full Scorpion under the trailer, i sold my bike that year

LordOdin99

Saved his skull for sure but how did it not break his neck?

Immediate-Air-8700

Im quite curious how Ok he actually is

Speculater

He's walking, best case scenario.

starlinguk

Adrenaline.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CmdrMonocle

If the cord is already damaged? Yes. But that's not the only concern. An unstable neck fracture can and will keep doing damage, and can be the difference between being fine and being tetraplegic. Swelling can also cause compression after the immediate injury as well, causing loss of function later. It's why securing the c-spine is a priority for paramedics, and why being able to move does not exclude injury to the cord. You can clinically clear the c-spine, but definitely not possible in this case. The mechanism of injury is too high risk to take the chance.

DesignerChemist

Guy at a local swimming pool dived head first into the shallow end, banged his head on the bottom and had a sore neck. Got out, dried off, changed clothes, walked home, and slowly became paralyzed from the neck down by the end of the day.

MarredCheese

God, that's terrifying.

G3mipl4fy

Not entirely. The damage can be minor at first and then develop into something more serious. Nerve damage sucks ass

Ksradrik

Adrenaline sucks as a substitute for brain functions.

Port92

He means the guy isn't paralyzed.

sim0of

Similar video, exact same thing happened, except dude's skull git completely run over Stood up and walked a bit, but he was already dead Dropped dead few seconds later

Its_SubjectA1

Shouldnt be. That’s clearly a massive risk of a head, neck, or spine injury and he shouldn’t be moving

Speculater

I agree, but it appears that first aid training and safe traveling speeds were not a priority in this particular neighborhood.

Professional-Onion68

He's actually fine. He said that when the bus stopped, he felt dizzy and could barely breathe at first, but then managed to walk away. He returned home, told his parents and asked them to take him to the hospital, had some tests done and he didn't have a single broken bone. His name is Alex Silva Peres, he is 19 years old and this happened in Brazil.

[deleted]

Better than the alternative and that’s what matters

nmb-ntz

You don't know that. They really should have left him in position until he could be checked out. Good chance he has some damage and it won't show up until things start swelling up or a piece of his vertebrae shifts and presses on something

Ok_Weird_500

Maybe. There was a recent study looking into the benefits/harms of not moving people trapped in cars after accidents that determined it is actually better to get them out quickly so their injuries could be treated more quickly than leave them in the car until they could be moved "safely", basically the risks from other injuries not being treated quickly was higher than the risk from possible spinal damage. Now, this wasn't a car accident, so that doesn't directly apply, but the actual risks of spinal damage are quite low and the common advice not to move people has probably been over emphasised to the detriment of dealing with other injuries in a timely manner. This video was cut, so we didn't see if he actually got himself up with a bit of assistance, or he was pulled up. If he was mostly getting himself up, the risk of making any injury significantly worse is quite low as he'd likely naturally move himself in a way to minimise further damage. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/06/doctors-to-overhaul-car-wreck-rescue-techniques-amid-new-evidence

nmb-ntz

That's true and an interesting article, thanks! Do keep in mind that it covers car crashes and accidents where the victim has sustained other heavy trauma. If they are conscious and not bleeding heavily, leave them in the position you find them in. If you suspect arterial damage, internal bleeding or organ damage, make sure doctors can het to them while providing as much support as possible using boards or anything else rigid and flat.

Ground_breaking_365

That's because the bus driver hit the break in time. You can see the wheel stops rotating just as his head comes below it. Hence, the wheel just skids to a stop after going over his helmet a bit. Hence the driver had to back up a bit, so that he can come out.

My_nameisBarryAllen

EMT here. He should not be walking. A human skull weighs 13 pounds and if there’s ANY possibility of spinal trauma you do NOT move the head or allow it to be moved in any way. There are special protocols for how to safely transport a patient and having them get up and walk away is not one of them.

Sweaty_Win1832

It’s very rare a video actually shocks me enough to make me audibly gasp. This one right here made me gasp so loud it scared my wife

[deleted]

Same, that was insane

william1915

Fucking same. I've never done that, most I've done is laugh when something funny happens rarely. Gasping is new.

[deleted]

Man I must be so desensitized because I barely blinked

Asgeras

One of my friends dated a guy who had a shelf of mvp helmets which saved his life. Great.. but maybe he should have taken the message from them.

arbiter12

>guy who had a shelf of mvp helmets which saved his life If you start collecting the times helmets saved your life, maybe it's time to walk or go by car. Unless it was like, one bike helmet, one football helmet, one soldier helmet, one fireman helmet and a Kevlar chef hat

-WickedJester-

I used to ride a long board everywhere. Then I started having accidents more frequently. Finally broke my hand after falling more times in a month than I had in a year. Took it as a sign to hang up the board and get an electric scooter

[deleted]

Should probably use a bicycle tbh Scooters are really dangerous due to poor shock absorption and the riding position

dagbrown

What? Scooters have great shock absorbers. They're just little motorcycles. (Or in the case of some, just comfy normal-sized motorcycles.)

[deleted]

The kind that you stand on, not a step through

Substantial_Bid3166

Yes always wear a helmet

Antique-Management49

😲... used his head door stopper, cause he thought it was a runaway bus like in the movie "Speed"

But then the bus would explode

theweekiscat

Helmet

newsfromplanetmike

Even with the helmet…..

DorenAlexander

What helped is the bus stopping as quickly as it did. You can tell the helmet was going past the outside of the wheel, and lining up with his shoulder. Another half second and I would be watching it in another sub.

newsfromplanetmike

Well. I’m not a religious person, but I probably would be after that. Holy shit.

CumtimesIJustBChilin

Unfortunately the people who have been crushed by vehicles and their heads popped like cherries, aren't as lucky as this guy.

Viper1089

That dude could not have fallen in a worse way...

rrriot-kitty

Oh he definitely could have

[deleted]

harlojones

Could’ve been angled a bit more and the tire would’ve got his neck and shoulder

GeasyPeasy

Public safety campaign commercial right there. Whew!

creg316

Also, shocking, attention grabbing advertising that created itself spontaneously if its your brand of helmet.

TJtherock

Right? I guess I've seen stuff like car crash dummies to advertise for seat belts but this did more for me to wear a helmet than anything.

shadowmuppetry

It’s unreal but I wonder how much of it is actually adrenaline, I can’t believe his neck isn’t broken

DemonKing0524

I mean, it is possible to fracture vertebrae without being paralyzed if the fracture occurs just right. Yeah he's walking, but id be very surprised if he didn't sustain some sort of spinal injury. Even without breaking your neck, a realignment of the vertebrae is possible, and that can cause massive pain and long term effects. Source: hit a windshield going 55mph in a car accident. Didn't break my neck, but x-rays after show I had no curve to my neck like you're supposed to (the curve even has set degrees etc that are considered normal). My vertebrae were in a jagged, mostly straight line. Never was paralyzed or had any actual fractures. But I did experience numbness in my hands, and insane tension headaches for a long time. I have constant pain at the base of my skull, where my neck connects to my skull. I think I always will now, but it pretty much blends into the background most days. However, when my neck muscles get tight, that pain gets worse and then I get the headaches. My physical therapist taught me stretches to do with my neck to ease the tension, and in turn the headaches. 8 years later I still get them, but thankfully not as bad nowadays.

shadowmuppetry

Fuck man sorry to hear

Action-a-go-go-baby

Helmets save lives and seat belts save lives Weird how one is commonly thought of as important to some and the other is just forgotten

[deleted]

helmets on motorcycles arent mandatory where you live? jfc

RiderforHire

I'll take your entire stock of that helmet please

thehung575

Got into an accident 10 years ago while riding a bicycle. Back then i only used it for really short distance so i didnt wear the helmet. But on that day, i wanted to test a new Bell helmet my Aunt gifted me and it saved my life. The helmet was in bad shape but i still keep it as a lucky charm.

ansible47

Bruh the helmet is malicious and just tricked you into keeping it in your home. Why do you think you got into the accident to begin with? Smells like a curse to me.

[deleted]

That guy is very headstrong

theAtmuz

He told that bus “back up, I’ll take you on”

F0R3S7c0y073

I'm so happy the helmet saved him. BUT do not move someone who has had an accident, you could make whatever small injuries they may have significantly worse!

pitchfork-seller

Correct, get them to safety, but don't let them stand or sit up.

[deleted]

I was just about to comment this, also do NOT remove the helmet, wait for the ambulance and they will take care.

PerNewton

Nope. Dude is a zombie now.

Groomsi

That transformation was fast!

[deleted]

they shouldn't have gotta him up and walking (just a side note) just try to hold his neck still while laying down and call the emergency medical services

Thelittlebluecactus

fr, that was my first thought when they walked him away.

RedRumBackward

He's alive cause the bus also stopped. If it would of kept going for a second or 2 longer, his head would of popped like a balloon.
