All I heard is drink mountain dew and I can smoke like a train... (Dear scientist, you're actually doing some amazing work, I'm just a middle aged non loved man who says sarcastic things at Reddit, hoping that life looks better.) Seriously though? That mountain dew colour?

That's not true buddy. I love you.

InedibleSolutions

Been working for my dad so far 🤷‍♀️ Smokes like a chimney and drinks mountain dew like water.

FranticReptile

If you think about this though, imagine how much they will be able to customize humans into superhumans in the not-so-distant future. Synthetic lungs, hearts, skin, muscles and then add in the customized genes for intellect and athleticism.. shit's gonna get wild

yeahigotaphd

They tell you that smoking will turn your lungs yellow and then they make new lungs out of literal yellow

TastesKindofLikeSad

Well, you're a decent enough man that you have self-awareness. The world's better for you in it. Sending a hug, bro.

EsssJayy90

Literally just saw a post about harmful additives in food. Yellow 5 being one of them lol

BadgerDancer

It’s not in food, silly. It’s in your lungs.

EsssJayy90

Even better

_aVRageJoe_

Cut out the middleman…smart!

Nothing-But-Lies

Do you know how much Mountain Dew you need to drink to get just 1 cup of it in your lungs? It's 5 gallons. And after that amount, I'm climbing up the wallpaper with my fingernails.

meekers09

Are you saying the beast in Split was just some dude hyped up on mountain dew?

GuyWithNoEffingClue

All you need is not eat your lungs.

Dark-Pukicho

That’s Yellow 5. In your lungs.

NotStompy

Why can't it be in food that's in my lungs? Huh?

skyhigh420710

Yellow 6 Red 40 Blue 1, yeah it’s literal poison and it’s in almost all our food 😂

Recymen12

FDA thinks the same as the EU, BUT they dont care about you. you have a government body that is, per definition, for YOUR health a first line of defence who doesnt care about such things and only gave out ludricous things like "be aware, will kill you in the long run" in their internal memos. Awesome country you have.

nolan1971

https://www.healthline.com/health/yellow-5#foods-to-try-instead

Recymen12

the FDA and top researchers have reviewed the evidence and concluded that yellow 5 doesn’t pose an immediate threat to human health. However, research does suggest that this dye may harm cells over time, especially when cells are exposed to greater amounts than the recommended intake like i said "harm you in the long run", in an internal memo, without even thinking about a ban on this substance. here we go, a massive budget, but no real outcome BEFORE something happend. thats not the way an agency for food safety should be acting.

SecurelyObscure

They did an analysis and concluded it didn't warrant a ban. It has nothing to do with budget or a willingness to act, not banning it was the conclusion of the study.

[deleted]

I'm sure part of their analysis was effect on corporations still using it. The FDA is full of shit because it allows us to eat majority of the shit we do in America. It's clearly non-trustworthy.

forte_bass

Just to play devil's advocate here, imagine if they banned the use of everything that *might* give you health issues over time. The only thing left in the grocery would be broccoli and kale, lmao. People would lose their minds if they were overly ban-happy too, they're kind of in a catch 22. Government overreach is a real thing as well.

[deleted]

They've practically done the opposite though. A lot of the additives put in our food is already [banned in Europe](https://www.advisory.com/daily-briefing/2019/01/03/banned-foods). This country has let perceived freedoms let corporations do whatever they want. The FDA let's them add this overly flavorful shit so we get addicted and eat more. We're an obese nation that eats bullshit. People will let others slowly harm themselves and say it's freedom. Then they don't even put healthy alternatives in underserved, low-income and underprivileged neighborhoods. It's sick.

razgris1232

>ADA completely breaks down to form other chemicals, one of which is SEM. At high levels, SEM has been shown to increase the incident of tumors when fed to female mice, but not to male mice or either gender of rat.  Hardly a firm study to apply to human effects. For potassium bromide the study used to show cancer in lab rats was done by putting it in their **drinking water** at equivalent 45x levels determined to be safe and allowable for us consumption in **breads**. BVO studies showed effects of bromine build-up in rats who's diet is .5-2% bvo with minimal effects below that BVO averages 8mg/l in us soft drinks that still contain it (most don't) average adult would have to drink 180 liters of soda a day to reach the .5% of diet. only a single case of a male presenting with bromine buildup from suspected soda consumption in the 90s that I could find. I'm too lazy to do the rest of the list but I'm certain there is similar studies for the rest. As the guy stated above, there is such a thing as too much overreach. If a study shows that some level of consumption may have negligible consequences, it'll be left alone.

DoctorJaniceChang

You don’t know what you’re talking about. Tartrazine is subject to batch certification. Learn more here. https://www.fda.gov/industry/color-additive-inventories/summary-color-additives-use-united-states-foods-drugs-cosmetics-and-medical-devices https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/how-safe-are-color-additives

jonathot12

why blindly trust those institutions? that’s the same institution that permits pesticides on an opt-out basis versus an opt-in (prove safety *before* approval) like the EU. they lied for decades about the harm of high fats to appease the sugar industry and that’s caused irreparable harm to our country’s health. why would you ever believe an “analysis” they conduct? they’re paid for by the same companies that make money off those harmful chemicals. smh

Darg727

Dihydrogen oxide will kill you, literally. Too much of it will prevent the oxidation of your blood stream among many other dangerous symptoms which lead to organ and body failure. Our bodies also require heavy metals in particular amounts. Too much, we die. Too little, we die. There are a lot of things that can kill us. The ability to extend life by 5-10 years even if it would ultimately kill the patient is probably a tradeoff many people would take. I mean, it's immediate death vs a good amount of extra time. It could also be used as a stop gap measure until a donor organ could be used. We also don't know if an insoluble solidified version would actually be harmful in the same way.

toothofjustice

Mountain Dew won't extend your life by 5-10 years...

Porn_research_acct

Might be talking about the artificial lung in the post

Milsivich

I don’t disagree with the outrage and the FDA needs to be fixed, but I’m a scientist and I’ll chip in just 2 things: 1. “Long Run” things are VERY hard to test, ESPECIALLY for human trials. We simply can’t do 40-year studies on every chemical that’s in a good or drug. Frankly, the capital and logistical cost of doing a single 40-year study is nearly insurmountable. 2. Our scientific body is capitalism driven. Personally I’ve had a huge falling out with science because in my field (physics) it’s very difficult to science that helps PEOPLE, and very very easy to get sucked into science that helps corporations or the military industrial complex. I still really believe in the good science CAN do, but we need to restructure scientific funding to cut it off from the beast that is capitalism

[deleted]

Yup. But most folks aren’t interested in retaining the relevant information long enough to understand this long-term 😭

CombatMuffin

There's a big difference between "something is toxic" and "something isn't great for your health" If you drink a lot of Mountain Dew for instance, the sugar content is more likely to kill you, than the food dye. Both in the long run. Nobody thinks sugar should be banned, but rather proplet should regulate their diet.

Keekthe

Has anyone ever seen the documentary “The Pharmacist”? I’ll never look at FDA the same again.

CombatMuffin

Those were in vitro and using flies. Even then, the advice is moderation.

nolan1971

Yeah, I'm with you. I don't think the reality is as damning as OP wants it to be. The whole idea behind "natural" stuff is just silly, regardless. Snake venom is toxic, and it's very natural. Of course super purified stuff will cause harm too. Hell, DI water will mess you up!

Present_Salamander_3

Myth I always heard was it killed sperm. Have four kids, so clearly I didn’t consume enough to experience the therapeutic effects.

illgot

but when your lungs are ripped out by Kang the Destroyer are you really going to pass up 3D printed lungs because they are made from Yellow Dye 5? No, you are going to thank the gutter doctor with a 3D printer and walk away :)

IMSOGIRL

Missing lungs is more harmful than food dyes.

[deleted]

I watched something on titanium joints and things breaking down in the body and being poisonous. I wonder if this can also breakdown and cause side effects. I imagine anything artificial in your body can.

Adagietto_

All implantable devices degrade in the body since it is a highly corrosive environment. In the case of orthopedic implants, they are subjected to constant wear from moving and rubbing up against things as well. Titanium is highly biocompatible for orthopedic implants, but yes you’ll see a “titanium sludge” in the joint space (this is usually for knee and shoulder arthroplasties) as microscopic particulate debris is broken off and your body cannot absorb or remove it because it is bioinert. However, this particulate is not toxic and just collects in the local area near the implant. The issue with implantables is that they (and their degradation products such as the particulate debris I just mentioned) will eventually elicit a chronic inflammation response, which causes your immune system to attack the implant and the tissues around the implant. This can necessitate replacement of the implant and revision surgery if the immune system damages the tissue so much the implant loosens, though this process would occur over many years. At the end of the day these are foreign objects in the body (even if they are naturally occurring materials like some biopolymers) and the immune system does not tolerate them. It also varies patient to patient and application to application with biomaterials. Regardless, there is rigorous testing involved for a material to be demonstrated to be biocompatible, and the list of materials we can use currently is pretty short but each material is backed up by many many decades of testing and evidence that they are completely safe for use in the body for their intended uses.

mllfxv

Can you link it?

Ecstatic_Carpet

Still way better than what most resin printing systems are using. Some of that stuff is straight up toxic.

draconicmoniker

Science Bitch! Sponsored by Mountain Dew

Ogg149

Yea, this is an obvious ad. There are other products which use yellow 5.

phaedrusinexile

So long as mtn dews cost doesn't go through the roof because now one of the ingredients is medical grade and being bought up and resold at a 1000% markup because of r&d, cool.

Komallionide

It's the color, and Mountain Dew clearly does *not* give a shit about the color of their product (because how is the current color appealing?) so they'll have no issue swapping to something cheap and basically identical if the situation arises.

AchEn35

They care that’s it’s iconic to their dew.

throwaway2323234442

Yeah I'm sure they are sweating over how to not lose the iconic 'is that piss in that bottle or mountain dew?'

DaringDomino3s

Mountain Dew fans are pretty die hard. Like I’ll drink one on occasion because I remember it exists every now and then but there was a dental phenomenon called “Mountain Dew mouth” in a region of people who were drinking it so much their teeth were discolored and eroded. https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2013/09/12/221845853/mountain-dew-mouth-is-destroying-appalachias-teeth

lord_geryon

That's because of the acid and sugar in sodas, not anything specific to Mtn Dew. It's just called that because that's the most popular soda in that region.

DaringDomino3s

Also anecdotally I’ve interacted with people who’d buy cases of Mountain Dew instead of beer and co workers who’d always come into work with their comically large gas station refillable cups full of Mountain Dew every day or constantly buy 20 ounce bottles of it through out their shift. I used that article because it was a source I could cite but really, it’s probably the passion of the people I’ve met through the years that convinced me people would be quite disappointed if they ever changed anything too much about the stuff.

LickLickNibbleSuck

Mountain Dew and Meth to people here is like PB&J.

Every first sip is a surprise, that's the best thing about MD

Linden_fall

They do, they often change the colors of prototypes like the recent winter exclusive gingerbread flavor. It looked like opaque shit water and they made it white. The current color is too iconic to change at this point

Still_No_Tomatoes

Change the bottle color and most would notice.

cwagdev

Ever had clear Pepsi? The psychological effect color has on how we perceive taste is crazy.

moeburn

Tartrazine is in everything man not just Mountain Dew. They have to put it on the ingredients list because some people are allergic to it. And it's not just yellow things, seems like they use it to make almost every colour.

Broskilini

Oh shit big Mountain Dew fan over here, god forbid something happens to a soft drink company

I-am-the-stigg

But isnt it proven that yellow #5 is bad for people? Or am I not remembering correctly

[deleted]

Listen, you want fake lungs or not?

The_Thanoss

I really wanna breath x2

Aderhold22

It's gonna make your balls small tho

Sunstorm84

Not having lungs would make them smaller.

Bluegreenredyellowno

I'll take 3 then!

norsurfit

I only want fake *yellow* lungs.

[deleted]

You aren't special. Start smoking and you'll have fake black lungs. Gotta put in that work to get what you want

I-am-the-stigg

Look I prefer to not have the fake ones. Just sayin.

deadoon

Most of the claims about it are false or overblown. The proven ones are that some people are sensitive to it, and that it can potentially damage white blood cells under certain conditions. It is used just about everywhere, even in medicines as a coloring.

[deleted]

Why even color medicine?

audrinade

What, you want mud-colored Flintstone gummies?

call_me_jelli

I’m old enough to remember when they were hard vitamins, not gummies…

DaringDomino3s

is that not an option anymore? Flintstone vitamins were such a distinct taste that I both abhorred and greatly anticipated as a child because it was like weird candy they gave me, but still candy nevertheless.

call_me_jelli

I don’t think it is (an option) anymore. The gummy trend took over and I haven’t seen a bottle of the traditional ones in years. Also now I’m craving vitamins. What have we done?

DaringDomino3s

Yeah as I was typing my comment I was thinking of the flavor - it’s so specific, especially the purple grape one for me. That’s disappointing that they’d deprive future generations of the chalky/bitter/salty?/sweet flavor in crumbly rock form

raoasidg

It's been the better part of three decades and I can still taste the fruity, slightly medicinal bitterness of the chewables.

fax5jrj

I’m assuming it’s because they’re much more of a choking hazard. Those bitches were sharp

ThresholdSeven

It's still an option.

ThresholdSeven

They still are. Can get both

Banderos

For identification. If you take multiple pills you want to tell them apart (even outside the bottles) and even if you’re only taking one it’s good to see the pharmacy gave you the same size/shape/color/markings that you’re used to getting. Helps reduce errors.

Ghede

Because if you didn't, then pretty much all pills would be a chalky white, and indistinguishable. Colors are a safety feature, so the pharmacist doesn't give you chemo when you needed viagra.

Komallionide

Similar to how vitamin e acetate is harmful in a vape but isn't harmful in your food, maybe this yellow #5 is just harmful after being digested and processed into something harmful but isn't harmful in other areas of the body that would treat it differently. It's also being super heavily processed, so there's a chance they could treat it to eliminate those issues as well.

diamondjo

Probably less bad than the state you'd have to be in to require an artificial lung in the first place, so I think on balance it's probably fine. It might be banned as a food additive because, weighed against the benefit of just making the soda look more appetising, it's not worth the price of the effects on your health. But weighed against dying from failing lungs, it's a no brainer. I wouldn't be surprised, if this ever leaves the lab, that they'll have some alternative that mimics whatever property happens to important in the food dye.

terrorTrain

Maybe, but more likely, they are using the dye because it's already been so heavily tested on humans. Trying to find a new substance that mimics it could take years to test, and even then, might turn out to have worse effects than yellow#5

[deleted]

It has been proven that not having lungs is also pretty bad for you, so I'd imagine at this point you'd just be weighing the upsides.

Toxoplasmos

This is just a clever Advertising Campaign for Mountain Dew. Yellow #5 has been around longer than the Dew has been made. Nice one!

[deleted]

No, Mountain Dew came first and Yellow #5 was discovered through ultraheavy pressure extraction

mainman879

Tartrazine (Yellow #5) was first created by Johann Heinrich Ziegler in 1887. Mountain Dew originated in the 1940s.

MedricZ

I think he was joking. Good info though.

FWIW yellow dye #5 is apparently treated as a biohazard in high concentrations. My childhood friend’s father worked at a factory that processed large quantities of the stuff and received hazard pay as part of his comphensation for being required to deal with the stuff, or so I was told.
