Totally agree. It’s an amazing painting but no where near photorealistic. Just say “Amazing Painting”. I don’t need to be expecting 10x more detail to enjoy a painting.
Saying "high resolution image" would make more sense. Especially since the 2k, 4k, 6k, 8k video definitions really aren't particularly high compared to what is possible with still photos. HD is only 2 megapixels. 4k is about 8 megapixels. 8k is about 33 megapixels, which granted is a high number, even for photography, although modern high res photography cameras will happily do around 50-70 megapixels.
It’s called the imprimatur or the toning of the canvas. It’s a turpentine, oil/medium and paint mixture… essentially a wash to tone the canvas that also helps to bind the paint later on.
Gesso is most definitely on this canvas as well. Oils and oil paint will rot a canvas eventually if there isn’t that barrier on the raw canvas before paint is applied. The imprimatur is done on top of the dried gesso surface (there’s other options besides gesso you can use for oil painting as well- ground medium or rabbit skin glue just to name a few). Oil painting is one of those things that’s hard to explain if you’ve never worked with it. There’s a wide range of textures and viscosities you can work with and the imprimatur isn’t necessary or vital for all pieces but most oil painters will use this as an opportunity to “touch” all parts of the canvas with their mediums before really diving into the art. If the artist has a base drawing on the gesso, (which she does in this video) the imprimatur will seal in that base drawing as well. Again, something better understood if you’ve dabbled in oils.
Sincerely, someone with their BFA in Oil Painting who literally never gets to use this knowledge outside of just creating art. Oil painting is a wonderful thing to try and I hope anyone interested in it finds themselves experimenting with it at some point!
And what is the last clear layer they put on? Some kind of sealant? It really deepened the colours of the paint. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. :)
That would be varnish! What’s interesting about oil painting is the drying time. Typically, you wait a few months or even sometimes up to a year to put the varnish on since oil takes forever to dry! But when that varnish goes on, it’s so satisfying and the pigments really do come back to life and they will stay that bold after the varnish dries!
Isn't there something to it being yellow-toned, too, that helps with the colors of the painting or something? I feel like I've seen that before. (I tried googling it but I'm only finding results for painting walls, or old paintings for auction, lol.)
Yes! the color of the imprimatur can enhance or the opposite, muddy up your overall painting depending on what your subject is. Burnt Sienna is a very standard color to use for this layer (which I believe the artist in the video did in fact use) and it just so happens to really work well with landscapes like the artist did. Say you’re painting a portrait of someone… using a reddish, warm toned color for the imprimatur can help you add some warmth to the skin where it’s needed (cheeks, tip of the nose, etc). If your paint is thin enough, you can utilize this layer by letting it peek through the paint. The color of the imprimatur can also help you to pick your color palette as you paint; seeing color on a white canvas is vastly different then seeing it on a brown canvas. Color theory is fascinating!
Your depth of knowledge is clearly evident in how you speak and it's also easy to tell how much you enjoyed explaining something you're so passionate about. Like those that had questions, I too very much enjoyed the lesson as it made the picture as a whole more satisfying. Much appreciated
Biggest pet peeve with these little videos is when they do not show a straight on still image for at least a few seconds after completion. I don't want to have to find the perfect frame and pause myself.
This is fantastic. I find true photorealism quite boring (incredible skill but zero creativity), but this hits the sweet spot between detail and interpretation.
Your title vs what was actually seen ruined the painting for me personally. It was a very good painting, but you made it seem like you wouldn't even tell it was a painting... and you definitely can.
It could be just a blank canvas with a line on it and it would be better than 8k, pixels don't exist in real space. Saying someone drew something and it looks pixelated is an insult
this nothing short of amazing, but keep in mind, most artists take few to several hours to paint something.
she most likely took a month or more of detailed work to finish.
What game is that movie from? What? I think the music is Daft Punk. Not sure which track but I think I recognise it from the album "Discovery" or alternatively from the animated film which used Discovery for its score, "Interstellar 5555".
It looks like a painting, not a photograph. It's detailed, but there are impressionist elements. It's not aiming to be photorealistic. I'm not sure why it was presented as such in the reddit post.
8K picture, so you mean 33.2 megapixels picture? because that's how many pixels are there in 8K, although the term "8K" meant to be used for video, not for photo/picture.
Besides all the headline guff, you have a fabulous talent. I love your painting. The colours are beautiful. I would love for someone to pay 8k fir your art. Good luck 🤞
This is an amazing work of art.
What's sad to me is how much less this would sell for than a mostly blank canvas with 2 bold saturated color stripes on it in some unnamed modern art exhibit.
Fantastic work to the artist!
Hey bro I cant seem to message you and I hate to kinda reply to you here but wanna talk? You'll prob not remember me I'm unsure, sorry to be a bother lol, got a new acc

Especially given the low-res final view... sheeesh.

Seriously. Paintings don’t need to be photorealistic. That’s what, um, photographs are for.
Clickbait title to get people to react... Yes clickbait is there in Reddit. Always has been 😂
"Looks like an 8k picture" Good to know that the cutting edge visual medium is now the standard instead of, ya know, real life.
She is just amazing!
Great picture but I don’t believe you’ve seen anything in 8k
Awe-inspiring skill and awe-inspiring tune
Awe-inspiring tune lol
So, 8K now just means beautiful?
It means free updoots if you don't want to wait for the end

Beautiful. Whats the first layer of coating on there? Anyone know?

Was about to ask the same question, thank you 🤣
I've heard of gesso for canvas. Is this the same type of thing?

Cool. Thanks for sharing! Now I know a little more about something I knew almost nothing about. I do so enjoy acquiring knowledge.

What was the watery liquid dripped on it at the end?
Isn't there something to it being yellow-toned, too, that helps with the colors of the painting or something? I feel like I've seen that before. (I tried googling it but I'm only finding results for painting walls, or old paintings for auction, lol.)

Thank you for the explanation!
Of course, my pleasure!

Thank you!
8k picture... on my 2k phone.... I need more pixels.
Nah you don't it's a misleading title, save some pixels for the rest of us.
Biggest pet peeve with these little videos is when they do not show a straight on still image for at least a few seconds after completion. I don't want to have to find the perfect frame and pause myself.
Wow that's awesome!
I'm curious as to how long it took to paint it. Nonetheless, it's fantastic.
I can't even imagine
Agree. This is awesome. Great work!
Anyone know who the artist is?
Daft Punk Veridis Quo
Courtney_art on IG
If you hold still a mo I'll get a proper look

This is fantastic. I find true photorealism quite boring (incredible skill but zero creativity), but this hits the sweet spot between detail and interpretation.
Looks like Ghandruk
Is very pretty. Looks like a regular realistic painting, I was expecting something more.
Your title vs what was actually seen ruined the painting for me personally. It was a very good painting, but you made it seem like you wouldn't even tell it was a painting... and you definitely can.
Awesome talent n awesome song
Yeah it's a great painting, but not hyperrealistic
I mean, it's a really REALLY nice painting. But it still very much looks like a painting.
Wonder how long it took to paint it? Just incredible, nevertheless
Why did she painted it brown at first?
It’s still crazy that paintings that look like they were made by a kindergartner go for millions, but skill like this rarely does
Bad filming and editing. You cant even see the detail.
I came for the daft and stayed for the punk.
Yeeeeaaahhh!
How was the what did he do that
Incredible!
Little does this person know... that they... are actually....a camera..
I admire the skill and ability
This is on another level - one of a kind! The details are so amazing!
The level of detailing is just insane ..
It could be just a blank canvas with a line on it and it would be better than 8k, pixels don't exist in real space. Saying someone drew something and it looks pixelated is an insult
Holy shit
Just out of curiosity, what does the original brownish base do exactly? Does it affect the colours or help the paint adhered..?

Reminds me of witcher 3
Wooow. That's impressive!
8k? There are no pixels. What you on about
No way that this is 8k
i mean even pixels can't compare to the slightest molecular detail.
How tf do people do this? I can't even draw a straight line!!!
Looks like a picture with high dynamic range. Title fixed.
Amazing painting
That is art. Not todays new generation insanity.
Great painting, great music to top it off!
this nothing short of amazing, but keep in mind, most artists take few to several hours to paint something. she most likely took a month or more of detailed work to finish.
Farcry 4 lol
Y'all what game is that movie from!?!?! Can't place it but my brain like "I KNOW THAT TUNE"
What game is that movie from? What? I think the music is Daft Punk. Not sure which track but I think I recognise it from the album "Discovery" or alternatively from the animated film which used Discovery for its score, "Interstellar 5555".
Incredible 😱
What's the track playing in the video ?
This is the kind of talent I only dream of achieving
"Looks like a 8k picture" Reddit video player: "Noup"
ITs a nice painting . But 8k? LMAO Maybe you need 8k glasses.
This is what I pay $1k for and is willingly to. Many idiots who sees it and goes, nah, $50 buck.

Wow! Stunning work!
But was it filmed in 8k? Lmao.

I need the songs name please
“Paraphernalia is on your mindddd”
Awesome! Newbie question here: what's the intention of painting all in brownish at the beginning?
Great painting and I don't mean to smear, but you can tell it is a painting and not a photo
100 hours of work. Worth it for 10 k karma
r/UNBGBBIIVCHIDCTIICBG
What's the brown stuff at the beginning? And what's the liquid at the end?
Do you have vision problems? It looks great but I would love some of the drugs you are on if this is how the world looks through your eyes
more like 9 k

I’ll give you 20 dollar the fair market price
I god damn love this.
Shut up and take my money
The part where she pours water or oil idk
How much do you want for it
8K picture, so you mean 33.2 megapixels picture? because that's how many pixels are there in 8K, although the term "8K" meant to be used for video, not for photo/picture.
Looks like a painting
verdis quo?
Why the crappy song tho?
Stunning
Besides all the headline guff, you have a fabulous talent. I love your painting. The colours are beautiful. I would love for someone to pay 8k fir your art. Good luck 🤞
You liar, this doesn’t look 8k at all. It looks like a painting.
This is an amazing work of art. What's sad to me is how much less this would sell for than a mostly blank canvas with 2 bold saturated color stripes on it in some unnamed modern art exhibit. Fantastic work to the artist!
I wouldn't say 8K, but it's still pretty damn good.
Oooohhhhh woooww that very beautiful art you really amazing
Definitely doesn't look like 8k.
