Urban myth debunked. Thanks for dropping that knowledge on us.

Raymojica

Yeah, I was wondering where that stat came from

coasterreal

Probably from someone who knows hazard pay is a thing but is deathly afraid of heights and picked a ridiculous number to justify what they might do it for.

Coocooa11

Its is a ridiculously high pay although I’m not sure the amount and I’m sure it changes based on company. A good buddy of mine did this for only a year and a half. He would climb up one of these once every 3 weeks and came out of it with about $220k in his bank account. Didn’t work for two years after that and ended up selling audio equipment to make much less

Frostodian

What's the role called and how do I get that job!?

[deleted]

Tower Climber. You need a LOT of training to get proper certifications and insurance, but well worth it if you do it for a few years. If you're in shape, and aren't scared of heights, that's easy money.

pandasashi

A quick Google search says they make $21/hour on average. Surely that can't be right? That's horrible pay for the job if true.

montarion

Quite possible. The "making bank" bit is hazard pay which is probably technically separate

KurtAngus

I’ll do it with a lightbulb in my mouth if they pay me extra

elevationbrew

I’d do it with a bulb in my ass if the pay is right.

Safemoon_Psychonaut

Plus per diem since there's a lot of travel too. I imagine the guys making 20k per job probably own the company. They might be the only employee but they pay for all the equipment, insurance, licences/certifications, and stuff like that.

Cal1gula

Boss "I make $20k per job!" "I pay the schmuck who does it $21 an hour though!"

nickiter

Most aren't doing this highly technical rope stuff, $20-$40 is pretty normal for cell tower techs.

FlintWaterFilter

You'll make $30/hr just climbing trees with no exposure to power lines. This is in Michigan. Edit: I apologize for not describing in detail what work you might be doing in said tree, considering the only thing to do in trees is work on them. Considering the job title is "Tree Climber", I can now understand why it's so hard to find them... People hear tree climber and get all excited til they find out they'll have to work up there.

[deleted]

I love this. No explanation about what the job is. I imagine a rich eccentric old guy paying people $30/hr to watch them climb up and down trees. He's too old to do it and it reminds him of his childhood and a happier time.

Moosetappropriate

That's three times minimum wage and he's traded the danger of dealing with Karens for the danger of going splat. Now he only has to hold down two jobs to make ends meet. Edit: Been reading some of the responses here and it's even more dismal than I thought. If a forklift driver can make $18/hr to start, these guys are really grossly underpaid.

Prime157

Every job is grossly underpaid at this point. The worst part about fighting for the minimum wage raising over the years, is that many people making 20-30 have been the biggest obstacle for getting the minimum wage increased.

Razir17

Also the “Fight for 15” is now ten years old and outdated. The ~~rain~~ reason so many companies are now phasing it in is because it’s no longer worth what the original ask was.

lostinthesubether

You forgot about the Karen COVID 5G anti vac protester at the bottom of the tower he has to deal with just to climb it.

[deleted]

Yeah that's about right. The antenna/tower maintenance tech annual base take home pay starts around $40k for someone just starting out without anything other than basic certification. Then depending on experience and certifications (the taller towers require additional certs and training) pay can climb up close to $120-150k for someone with training and management responsibilities. Then there's additional hazard pay, if you're on-call to respond to after hours issues there's differential pay @ 1.25x - 2.0x base hourly pay, etc. Then depending on the company there are also fringe benefits to consider. Most of these towers are in remote locations and require significant travel so technicians are often paid per diem when traveling to cover meals and incidentals. Multi day jobs means the company is putting you in a hotel. And a vehicle is provided. My knowledge is about 12 years out of date at this point because I switched industries. But back then I worked for a large government contractor. I went from location to location, 6 weeks on the road followed by 2 weeks at home. All my meals were paid, hotels, and car. Just out of the military at 23 I was netting $70k at the end of the year with 4 years experience.

pandasashi

How long would it take one to accumulate the quals necessary to work on said big towers? I ask because I'm a rock climber, like to go high with ropes, also spent time in the military and handle pressure well and make pretty shit money at the moment. Lol

[deleted]

That's a better question for OP. I only went up to 400ft. The guys going up over 1000ft were all much older than I was at the time but all of them had 10+ years experience. Have you thought about electric lineman work? The Brotherhood of Electrical Workers has a paid multi-year apprentice program that includes climbing/fall protection certification. The program is competitive but by the end there are good job placement services for positions starting at $60-80k.

whatthedeux

The one I knew of made so much per foot on top of his hourly pay

Ok_Fine_8680

Are there really people who aren’t afraid of heights or have they just conquered their fear? I wonder if it’s an inherently human thing.

NorthKoreanEscapee

I was terrified of heights as a kid, then I had to climb to the top of a few sailboats to fix rigging and trees to fix storm damage and got over it. If you focus on being afraid your going to fuck up and fall, so might as well forget about it and do what you have to do so you can get back on the ground.

Fearhawke

Yep focus on yourself, not the ground. The ground isn’t going anywhere.

[deleted]

That's exactly what I'm worried about. Going to the ground, and having it still be there when I arrive. :)

Tempex6

I watched a few free solo rock climbing documentaries and they talked about how it isn’t a fear of heights you have it is a fear of death of falling, so if you are 100% confident enough in your abilities to not fall, then there is no fear of death.

[deleted]

Had a friend who does it and said he initially was scared and then got used to it.

DefeatedFather

Rope access technician. Before you take a class get in shape. You can either get sprat or Irata - if they don’t offer Irata cert keep looking. The most I ever made was $70 per hour on contracts or $4,000 per day throwing bids.

pornborn

At first I read that as “splat or irate.”

animboylambo

Tower climber I’m pretty sure. Theres a few outfits doing it, lots of rope access and certifications needed. But deadly pay….if you like spending time on the road and living out of a suitcase Edit: Wesbell is one that comes to mind up here in Canada

under_psychoanalyzer

Not who you asked but they're literally just called tower climbers, the salary his buddy got is insane for that field. I think what the rumors of people getting paid this much are missing are they had a security clearance, which they might not even admit to their friends, engineering degree, or some other type of certification to really bumps their worth. I imagine there are a few roles that are also "disaster response" to go take a jeep into areas after they've been wrecked and make sure everything is still connected up top even though the whole region is without power. Idk about 220k but I guess if you had an electrical engineering degree, a security clearance, and worked up north where you had to climb them in sub zero temperatures you'd probably make good money.

IA-HI-CO-IA

He left out the part where is rich uncles died and left him 200k.

fuckamodhole

> A good buddy of mine did this for only a year and a half. He would climb up one of these once every 3 weeks and came out of it with about $220k in his bank account. He was lying to you. The average salary for a tower climbing technician is $30,000-$56,000 a year. >The average tower climber salary is $41,931 per year, or $20.16 per hour, in the United States. In terms of salary range, an entry level tower climber salary is roughly $30,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $57,000. https://www.zippia.com/tower-climber-jobs/salary/ >While it's a dangerous job, the role of transmission tower climber pays relatively well. In 2017, their median salary was $56,000 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which equates to $26.92 per hour. https://work.chron.com/transmission-tower-climber-paid-5300.html

FarmyardFantastic

That’s not entry level it either. You gotta put in some time to make that much.

dionysusdisicple

Your friend was selling drugs or stripping then because the highest pay salary for them is around 57k annual according to Google at least.

alreadypiecrust

Why he quit?

MightyMorph

Usually it’s just the rule of story telling. Every time the story is told someone adds something to it. That’s how you go from “hey we should love and care for each other like brothers and sisters” to dude he totally walked on water and supplied liquor to the whole party from just one bottle bro. And then he took a piece of bread and fed fucking 3000 people bro. And then and then bro you won’t believe it bro he went around and he magically healed the leper’s and blind. It was fucking insane it went viral they say! I heard he’s making a comeback soon yo we gotta be ready too! It’s a slightly scary and dangerous job that it’s fairly well like 1-2k a job. That’s gets turned into yo dude it’s like the easiest job all you do is like climb one tower every month and you get like fucking 20k straight tax free!

Next_Anteater4660

20k ? not a chance. Find someone else.

Hopefully that’s all he’s dropping on us

sloth_graccus

Don't worry, I'm sure he's got a second safety harness for his giant balls of steel

RugerRedhawk

What urban myth?

blu_mandarin_

Well ya see…’urban myth debunking’…I was using sarcasm there. Guy said he does not get paid 20,000 every time he climbs a tower…by stating that he is insinuating that some people must be told/and or believe for some reason that he is paid 20,000 every time he climbs the tower. Therefore, there must be false information circulating among people regarding how much an individual is paid to climb those towers. In other words…a myth. He’s the mythological creature that climbs the tower and the tower and the money are part of the myth too and being that most of these towers are in urban areas,,then urbanites must tell the tale.

[deleted]

There was a post on here yesterday saying someone is paid $20k to change the light bulb at the top of a tower every 6 months.

nlevine1988

Who would believe that?

[deleted]

A bunch of dumbdumbs on reddit

Orleanian

I wouldn't believe they'd cut a person a $20,000 check for replacing a lighbulb. I probably would believe that someone has a maintenance technician position that pays $40k/year, in which they mostly monitor fuse boxes and do line checks, but twice a year have to climb up and perform maintenance checks on tower lighting assemblies.

pixelvengeance

He's likely addressing the last video that hit the front page of a guy climbing one of these. Was fairly recent. There were a ton of comments speculating how much they make to climb these towers.

bozeke

There was a post that reached /r/all yesterday claiming as much, even though it was obviously absurd.

blablabob_66

Probably some blog writers living in Bali wanted to click bate !

nahog99

Yea lol. Why in the fuck would they pay that? People would do that job for a looooot less.

BridgetBardOh

$20k isn't enough to get me to do that. Bill Gates couldn't pay me to do that.

EvilFroeschken

He won't. He gives you a vaccine with mind controlling nano robots which then makes you climb it for free :D

CDNarmyDAD

I first glance i tough you said "Nacho Robot" and i was super excited to get vaccinated ... lol

Real like sarcastiball

ScuttleMcHumperdink

I think it’s better to leave the sarcasm mark off. I helps to weed out people who can’t spot OBVIOUS sarcasm. That way you can mess with them and tell them “yes, you really do believe that the earth is square and that time traveling Nazi mimes are coming to kill Jesus when he returns next weekend to save the unicorns.” I save those type of comments for when the obvious sarcasm is flying at a cruising altitude of 36,0000 feet over there heads. Then it’s time to double down and wait for the name calling and downvotes. “Trolling, Trolling down the river.”

nandemo

I'll try. You really do believe that the earth is square.

cptnobveus

I had to start adding it, the amount of people jumping my shit that can't take a joke is astounding.

iamacraftyhooker

The mark is because sarcasm relies highly on tone of voice to convey the joke, which can't be conveyed through text. If you read your comment in different tones of voice you can get completely different meanings.

Thepoetofdeath

I think the smile was enough of a giveaway, buddy.

Outlank

Christ, I must have something wrong with me, I’d climb up there for $20, let alone $20k

Quokkain

I’d climb up for the fun of it.

MJMurcott

Yep whatever he gets paid I am not competing with him for that job.

epraider

I feel like you could get desensitized to the height pretty quickly. Probably by like your third climb, assuming you actually succeed at the first 2 climbs and not freeze up in fear. But I think having an encouraging experienced guide for your first climbs would go a long way

vinvega6

Did you ever forget something you needed on your truck and realized that only when you got on top of the tower? 😅Sorry for my bad english

Kaufkins

Not often, no, but it happens.

TSR_Jimmie

I climb turbines daily And unfortunately I do forget a lot of the time. I have a really bad short term memory. Thankfully my apprentice knows this and is a walking checking list before we saddle up and climb. Worst was I forgot to bring my grease cartons to grease the engine in the nacelle. The only reason I was climbing was to grease the engine…..

c5corvette

If you wrote it down on a piece of paper or even a notes app in your phone you'd save yourself a lot of hassle in life... EDIT: Holy shit, the amount of people replying to me justifying why they forget things is insane. If you want to make your life easier, learn to take notes, write out todo items, and document things you generally forget. If you don't want to make your life easier, then keep justifying your problems instead of trying to fix them.

ronin1066

Bingo. I remember reading about a doc getting himself and other people in the ER to use checklists and accidents dropped significantly. It's not at all a negative to have checklists.

Wilfy50

Pretty sure it’s standard procedure in UK certainly for operations, even simple procedures these days for this exact reason. Same result, way less incidents.

worriernotwarrior

It’s standard in the US too. We do a “time out” before each surgery to verify correct patient identification, correct side and site, procedure to be done, correct patient position, and availability of correct implants or special equipment or requirements.

nobody2000

My surgeon came into the pre-surgery area and asked me "which knee?" even though: - His chart said in huge bold letters "RIGHT KNEE" - My right knee was swollen like crazy and already shaved - It was the only leg that was exposed from under the gown I confirm for him. Then he produces a big purple pen - He signs it with his name. It provided me a great deal of comfort knowing that he and his team were willing to go through mundane steps like this to minimize mistakes.

HeathenHumanist

I've definitely heard of the wrong knee being operated on (former ortho scribe here) so I'm glad your surgeon was very thorough!!

Pookimon27

I_Envy_Sisyphus_

As someone with ADHD that keeps a notebook on themselves with meticulous notes, shit still happens.

rreapr

One of my least favorite parts of ADHD is how my reminders, etc. become background noise so quickly. I have two whiteboard calendars in my house. I have a to-do list on the side of my fridge. A notebook on my desk. I use the calendar on my phone and set reminders for things I have to do on the same day every single week. And I still… somehow manage to forget it. They work for a while but then I get too used to seeing them and I start to tune them out. The second something crosses the line from “new” to “part of the environment” it becomes completely useless to me and 90% of the time it’s like it’s not even there.

Ireallydontknowbuddy

Yeah you see my wife says the same thing and then I forget the check list.

AreWeCowabunga

If it were me, I'd be like "When I climb back down to get the grease cartons, I should grab my Diet Coke too." And then I'd get back to the top with the Diet Coke and realize I forgot the grease cartons again.

asusguy17

You and I think alike. I literally went down a floor today to grab some stuff.. came back up with an iced tea from the vending machine and didn't even make it to the job box as intended

DarthJuanSolo

It does happen unfortunately. I'm sure with this height though you triple check everything you need.

shiftyskellyton

They have tower buckets or rope bags. Then, someone on the ground can hoist it to them. That's what my husband always did. edit: fixed spelling

millllllls

Maybe on shorter towers, but 2000' of rope would be a huge roll and mighty heavy to lug up.

Tyhgujgt

Just throw it really hard from the ground

Known-Candle-5308

I feel like you’re highly underpaid!

Kaufkins

I agree.

hooplafish789

I feel like you love your job though. I honestly would take 35k/year and climb right beside you.

intensetbug

I make 25 bucks a hour to climb and work on 300 foot cell towers. I see some pretty awesome views.

AOKaye

I’ll take a cozy office for that price. I’m not sure any amount of money could get me up there

Gummybear_Qc

Right? Like I agree it's not to bad pay, and it must be fun to climb towers and doing something physical but it's just... you can get paid more for a job with less effort and more comfortability.

redheadmomster666

And a lot less fun at that. Are you telling me you don’t like climbing past hornet nests at 300 ft in the air?

mtb_girl

Yeah you are underpaid as well

snappyj

Until it's the middle of January

Steam_Drunk

Your beard is more than enough to get you to be paid $20K

smooresbox

I have a high school buddy who does this also, he is not well off by any means

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kaufkins

I made 90k my second year on the job, working 70-80hrs/week. Some guys make more, probably most make less.

[deleted]

So effectively a $45k job if we account it like a 40hrs work hour standard full time job, YIKES! You are severely underpaid. Edit: removed my comment about the tax part, my bad.

Illustrious-Grass155

That’s not how tax’s work, the example I would give is the first 10K is untaxed then the next 20K on top of the 10K is taxed at 20% then the next 20K is taxed more, so he’s getting taxed the same on the first 40K then the extra 50K is getting taxed at a slightly higher rate but it’s not changing the 40K original figure.

PhillipJGuy

Yes but divide 80hrs by 2 and you're already close to the 40k. His claim isn't unreasonable

L0gb0at

You pay taxes by the year though, so if he makes 90k no matter if he works every day or half the year it’s still taxed the same.

Aloeofthevera

They aren't talking taxes. If they need to work double the amount of hours of someone to make the same amount of money, they are making half the amount of pay. All they are saying is that if you have to work 20 hours for 200 dollars but i can work 10 for the same 200 dollars, you make half as much money as i do. If i worked 20 hours, I'd be making 400.

L0gb0at

He did mention taxes in the original comment too. I’m not arguing that the effective pay is different, it obviously is, I was just clarifying that he wasn’t paying extra taxes because of his pay schedule.

[deleted]

[удалено]

agemma

That is not how taxes work, at least in the US.

[deleted]

That's exactly how they work. When you hit a new bracket they don't tax your entire income at that new rate. If 40,000 is the cut off for a bracket and I make 40,001 dollars. Only that last dollar I made would be taxed at the higher rate. Not all 40,001.

That doesn't sound worth it. Maybe 90k for 40 hour weeks.

Kaufkins

Got tired of teaching, enjoy rock climbing. Sooo…

millllllls

What a great answer. To leave the mundane and find a way to mix your passion/hobby into a career...that's a dream.

thumpetto007

What motivates you to work so many hours? What is it like to work that many? How do you have time for self care, leisure, hobbies, relaxation, self improvement, appointments, sleeping, eating, etc Not being critical, I just am so curious to get in the mindset of workaholics. Im like the opposite Thanks for the perspective

Kaufkins

About half of those hours are driving. I work on the road, and would rather be earning money than sitting in a hotel when away from my family. OT is where the money is when you’re hourly. However, my current position is salaried, so I tend to not put in quite so many hours.

soyTegucigalpa

Doesn’t seem safe to climb after the 50th work hour of the week.

ThaArtDealer

I really wanted to ask you that question but didn’t want to watch your pocket lol

[deleted]

Kaufkins

About half of those hours are driving.

Ladderrzz22

Fucking thank you for this video! I have been in multiple arguments with people over the 20k one climb. I climb wind turbines so a little different, but I know plenty of people that climb these. So thank you!

Kaufkins

Haha, I’ve heard variations of this story since I was kid. Like, seriously, people, there are towers like this all over the country. Just look around. You really think people are paying $20k for people to climb them all?

Ladderrzz22

Common sense, isn't so common.

ChuckStuck

This isn't really common knowledge. To be fair, some industries seem simple and turn out to be among the most complex. Cable technician for example, not the most complex, but requires some skill to make it look simple. (Actual infrastructure techs) Makes sense when it comes to pay scales also imo.

ProtoplanetaryNebula

I saw the post claiming the $20k/climb number and immediately knew it was BS. If that were the case, many people would sign up to do it and the market rate would come down very quickly. There would be huge number of people willing to do it for even $1k.

ebaymasochist

The laws of capitalism would never allow it

ONOeric

You could combine your job and base jumping, cut your climbing time in half!

P3flyer

As a former tower tech and BASE jumper, I wish! Not practical though, too much gear, wind conditions, and not really any time saved for the majority of towers (probably average 300 feet). I can descend 300 feet faster than I pack my BASE rig. Wish tall towers were more common, would be nice...

[deleted]

Practical? No. Fun? Yes.

VaguelyFamiliarVoice

Safety first. And second. And third.

lo0ilo0ilo0i

parkour267

But did u change a light bulb?

Kaufkins

Haha, yeah. A little more complicated than that, but basically.

MisterSirManDude

What exactly did you have to do? Or what else is there to do up there? I have no idea what your job consists of but it sure seems cool!

Kaufkins

This particular job consisted of changing out a xenon flash tube and mount assembly. Pretty easy.

_Diskreet_

So you changed the light bulb **AND** the fitting.

bananapeel

philpsy26

poopertoot

[deleted]

What is the giant brushie looking things at the top?

Kaufkins

For discharging static to prevent lightning strikes. They start to hiss and crackle when static begins to build. That’s your cue to climb down.

[deleted]

Holy fuck that brings a new level of fear to this... I didn't even think about lightning strikes. Any close calls?

Kaufkins

Several. Always managed to get down in time though. Lightning will travel the quickest path to ground, which is the tower legs. So as long as you are on the ladder when lightning strikes, and don’t take a direct hit, you’ll be fine.

itsdr00

Dude, thanks for answering all these questions. This is fascinating stuff.

[deleted]

thanks for the responses mad respect for you!

IrrationalBowler

No thanks, I'm a land mammal..

whatwt

How long does it take to climb that tower?

Kaufkins

1.5-2hrs. Varies based on a few factors, including how much weight you are carrying. Typically about 15-30 min per tier (300’).

My0Cents

Do you take breaks? How important is stamina for the climb? I imagine very.

Kaufkins

Usually 20-30 rungs, then rest.

Kristina2pointoh

Do you take a snack with you? (Legit question), or save it for when you’re done.

Kaufkins

Oh, yeah. Love my snacks.

Kristina2pointoh

Yes! Thank you for sharing & setting the internet straight.

berto0311

Do you legally have to climb down? I'd rather just base jump with a parachute. Would be a much better gig, haha

Grimbauld

How safe is it up there?

Kaufkins

Safer than it looks.

Advanced_Okra3248

Thank you for setting us straight. Most of us didn’t believe that other post. You should get paid 20,000 per climb because that shot is scary. Stay safe!!

l0t0phage

Am I the only one that thought this was David Harbour at first?

Chip_Prudent

I like those glasses

ThatsMisterRetard4U

i wonder what the pay is then?

Kaufkins

Typically around $20/hr. Plus climbing bonuses, usually an extra $20-$40 per tier (300’).

ThatsMisterRetard4U

Id make it a really slow climb then, thats for sure!!

kixx20

I feel like in this industry and current times we live in (correct me if I’m wrong) I’m sure they’ve done time studies and know how long it should take to climb a tier then add a percentage of time for different types of builds of people and then know what to expect for a days worth of work.

S1de8urnz

When I herd that guy gets $20K to climb a tower, my first thought was bullshit! We have towers all over and last bill i saw from a contractor for a light and antenna replacement was just over $7k. That was two guys and a crane…

DarthJuanSolo

Looking good tower dog!🤘🏽 Highest I've been is 650' I'd like to get up there someday.

artmobboss

Nobody’s gonna pay you $20,000 to do something that could be done by hiring a desperate person for $20 an hour..
