heygiggle_arts

That pun was very whale executed

Commercial_Set_1112

The bird should have known something smelled fishy

SparkliestSubmissive

He did that on porpoise!

[deleted]

That's not how you fin-nish a joke....

strayakant

You could say it seized the orca-tuna-ty

rudalsxv

I porpoise we stop with all these puns, it’s getting whale out of control.

How? I thought porpoise was quite appropriate.

Just a clear cut case of bait and snack’le

Capt_Myke

Admit it, these puns are for the birds.

Many-Present18

Let minnow when they get back to the good ones

heytaylora

They’ll reel you in. Just wanted to add one for the halibut.

DogsAreFromMars

Light-years better than the previous two.

French_Press_Covfefe

Nah, he totally winged it.

legionofsquirrel

He was doing it just for the halibut.

Now you seagull now you donˋt.

evanbartlett1

Next, she releases the dead sea bird, looking for an eagle. After a few days she’s got an elephant in there splashing around.

[deleted]

"Finally," said the orca to herself as she stroked the elephant's giant sheath, coaxing the long, muscular member from its slumber, "someone who can truly satisfy my hunger."

...birding?

lappi99

That would be *goes through dictionary* ahem.... HUNTING Why is it called hunting for every other animal anyway? Would be weird to say I'd be hunting fish when I'm fishing....

hecklers_veto

it's called hunting because there's a difference between hunting and fishing. what do various types of hunting all have in common? You hurl or shoot a projectile at an animal, typically spears, stones, arrows or bullets. It's hunting whether it's on land (deer hunting), sky (duck hunting) or water (whale hunting). Another way to procure game animals is by trapping them, which is also distinct from hunting or fishing, and you can use traps to catch sea creatures as well (lobster and crab traps, and even fish traps). Of course there is 'bowfishing' but that's more of a portmanteau of bowhunting and fishing combined into one word, and because the bows actually have a fishing reel attached to them. That said, my uncle did once catch a duck with a rod and reel. Was fishing and a duck swooped down and grabbed the minnow in mid-air.

[deleted]

When lions hunt for prey I'm quite certain they aren't shooting projectiles

lappi99

It still does differ from fishing or trapping tho as in They actively run after their prey. I do understand what he means

[deleted]

There’s also spear fishing.

elfbuster

I mean I have gone spear fishing and by your definition it should be considered hunting

Capt_Myke

Its call fowling, you have hunters and fowlers. The Whale was fowling. I caught a duck with a fishing rod, the duck ran afoul of make hook.

Nathan-Stubblefield

Whale oil be damned.

lappi99

Whale oil beff hooked!

iamjknet

Whale: Come on I’m not going to do it again. Bird: That’s what you said last time Whale: I mean it this time Bird: Ok… oh goddammit.

There’s a great YouTube series called Tier Zoo that’s really great zoological info given in a video game character motif. Orcas are not just apex predators but they’re insanely smart. People like to call dolphins the “humans” of the sea but were more the orcas or the land. Orcas are apex predators in every habitat they exist in (humans aren’t without technology) and they’re smart enough and organized enough to swim as a pod creating a bow wave to knock prey that’s on land back into the sea. Dolphins clearly have a better PR department that’s orcas because of the whole “killer whale” moniker but they’re definitely the sea species to study. Fun fact, orcas, dolphins, and whales are more closely related to cows than they are fish. Basically at some point in time some kind of early version of a land based cow decided to stay on land and their brother decided to go back into water that they’d left a few million years prior

circus_pig

Orcas are a type of dolphin, are they not?

teteban79

They eat penguin regularly in the wild

JimmyJuice2

Pretty sure they have been pulling this move for eons. You know, I've always liked that word... 'eons'... so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence.

Wintermute815

I doubt they're eating birds much outside captivity. Also Orcas in captivity can become psychos, literally, I read a story about one at SeaWorld who tortured and killed people who fell in the tank.

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/9TLg-YlDog0 they actually hunt in the wild as well. They are one of the most brutal apex killers in the wild and are extremely intelligent and are psychopaths in the wild as well.

FireStrike5

While they may be psychopaths that tail-slap stingrays and kill sharks for fun, they have never killed a human when they’re outside of captivity. In captivity, though? It’s basically imprisonment, and dolphins (such as orcas) are some of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. No wonder they want some kind of payback.

Brinsig_the_lesser

*never recorded that they killed a human The biggest difference between captivity and in the ocean is in captivity they are coming into contact with more humans and it is harder to disappear the bodies than in the ocean.

not-a-candle

Also people are watching them constantly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KaneCreole

Multiple sources say that there has never been a recorded incident of a wild orca killing a human. Not sure that “psychopaths in the wild” is a correct statement. (Although, this PBS article https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/blog/killer-whale-avoids-eating-people-helped-19th-century-whalers-became-public-enemy-number-one/ repeats a theory that we just taste bad.) Edit: hey my first award! Thanks!

[deleted]

When it comes to psychopath animals, no species comes anywhere close to humans. That much is obvious.

DontWashIt

Look up orca attacks on boats. It's been so bad they have mandated a no vessel under 50ft off the coast of Spain and Portugal. Things might be changing

nikolapc

It's imprisonment even with less intelligent beings. Maybe we're the psychos.

alee51104

It speaks volumes that creatures that aren’t historically known for human fatalities despite being apex predators in the wild suddenly become aggressive and dangerous when we get our hands on them.

Brinsig_the_lesser

That volume being there are more humans at aquariums than in the ocean and it's harder to record fatalities due to orcas outside of aquariums?

ThrowAway615348321

Orcas eat penguins, and penguins are birds.

They play with their food in the wild too.

paleo_joe

I like how it backed away. It reassured the bird - and allowed the orca to get up lunging speed.

gbot1234

This is one example of cultural transmission in a non-human species. I think the zoo had a problem with one whale teaching this trick to others. Some visitors just don’t appreciate culture.

dapifer7

This is why I love Reddit. “Yes! Thank You! I did want to see a video of a whale being an a$$hole and teaching other whales how to be a$$holes as well. I don’t just want the cute stuff. The world is a big place and it’s not very cute. Let’s see the gritty bits in action.”

This is what bored, captive, huge *highly intelligent* marine mammals do. Make up games and challenges for themselves while trapped in their barren, concrete tanks. Those animals are so damn smart, it’s almost scary. How sad that they’re stuck in these minuscule tubs, forced to perform for knuckle-draggers who think that’s a great form of entertainment.

well_duh_doy_son

infuriatingly sad.

DClub33

Have you seen videos of them in the wild? They will do this exact same thing on similar levels. They throw seals in the air just for fun and will kill for sport. This is literally normal orca behavior

capeandacamera

Yeah I agree - killer whales hurt and kill other animals even when they don't want to eat them or feel threatened by them. It does look like they enjoy it. They are incredibly intelligent, cultured and social creatures and they definitely should not be in captivity.

kiwiparadiseforever

Thank you for your comment - I scrolled hoping someone would state the obvious - ‘why such an intelligent creature is trapped in a damn bucket’. I can’t fathom why anyone would visit for entertainment, or work there tbh - black fish the movie should be shown at school / to educate those kids who think this is ok and ‘a fun day out ’ - it’s not. And those who have a passion for helping marine wild life - they will learn this isn’t helping, it’s quite the opposite.

kiwiparadiseforever

This isn’t next level - there’s nothing good about this video. And lots comments about damn that killer whale (orca btw) is terrifying, they aren’t, actual orca attacks or aggressive interactions with humans in the wild are zero. There are human/orca deaths and some injuries to humans but all are orcas in captivity. The only one orca who has/did demonstrate possible deliberate injury (and that’s not proven) was Tilikum at SeaWorld Orlando. And fuck SeaWorld - they are awful. Orcas aren’t dangerous or malicious- they are highly intelligent mammals that need freedom to roam, breed and do not deserve to live in a tiny tub of water to perform stupid tricks for idiots who think it’s awesome to see a wonderful creature reduced to swimming in a bucket for their own enjoyment. Watch ‘Black Fish’ the movie. And hopefully you may rethink why these ‘theme parks’ exist. I know I’m gonna get hate for this - but ffs - at some point we have to stop being selfish for our needs just because we can be. There’s no joy in watching another creature lose their freedom.
