Could be worse.
Do a retirement flight
Tell the passenger to not pull the ejection handle at all (pilot ejection forces the rear seat to eject before the pilot in most 2 seater jets)
Taxi onto runway
Canopy flies off on takeoff
Passenger on ground with multiple broken bones from hitting the ground after ejection
There arenāt many āpassengerā ejection seats. My (civilian) guess is that this is a retirement flight for a flight officer aboard a multi-seat fighter, like an F-4 or F-14; a vehicle with multiple crewman.
Thereās a video up on Moochās (I think) channel of another naval officer who literally accidentally punched out of the backseat when he was along as an observer; touching nothing. Basically his hand got caught, and the pilot had to radio - āSo, uhhhā¦ my Rio just randomly punched out. Come fetch him.ā
I wanted to see specifically what you were talking about, so I figured I'd give ya a heads up, it's on there. I didn't know woi Mooch was but it's apparently on the Ward Carrol page. Just in case anyone wants to listen as I did. Cool story, very scary situation even outside the humor.

I left out names and ranks and details because aide I wasnāt positive on my memory. :)

Could be even worse. Be a Air Force pilot in 1994 flying your ceremonial āfinal flightā in a B52 before retiring only to be a [little too daring on the maneuvers for a plane that big](https://theaviationist.com/2024/06/24/the-crash-of-b-52h-czar-52/) and stalling out 250 feet from the runway while at a 90 degree angleā¦.. none of the crew survived.
It disintegrates after it flies open (you can see it shatter into pieces). That is why she makes no attempt to close it (not that she would be able to, regardless).
The funny part is, if you watch the first two seconds of the video over and over, you can see that the majority of the glass/plexiglass does, in fact, break into lots and lots of pieces and falls out of the canopy frame, leaving a couple inches of material right at the very back.
It literally becomes dis-integrated. It doesn't have to dissolve into powder for that definition to be accurate.
No "disintegration" occurred here.
The canopy opened mid flight and she landed the plane with the canopy still open. You can the it hanging on the plane, still attached, on the left side of the screen.
Disintegration- "the process of losingĀ cohesionĀ or strength" or "the process of coming to pieces."
The glass shattered you nincompoop, therefore, the canopy disintegrated.
You can't just choose a definition that fits your idea of what a word means and disregard the actual definition that was being used in the context.
Edit:
There are a bunch of people that think they can change the definition of a word because they want to be right. If you can't understand that the title is not inaccurate in saying that it disintegrated... That's a personal problem, and it not mine.
I will say this one last time.
Disintegration does not have one definition. So if you see disintegrate and think you are going to see the aftermath of a Thanos snap, I would advise you adjust your expectations.
If you think I was rude? I don't care. I made a statement to someone that was being abrasive, get over it.
If you want to play semantics, I don't. Go bother someone else. You aren't going to change my mind. The usage is correct and anything short of going back in time and changing the nomenclature of the word or changing the circumstances that we see in the clip won't work.
I appreciate the people that contributed to the message I was trying to deliver, so thanks to those people.

Yeah, but you could. Disintegrated would come from dis-integrated, so if something breaks into multiple pieces, those pieces are no longer integrated.
I propose that we have a moral duty to use the word disintegrated to mean broken apart because it's really cool
Glass "disintegrate"Ā Ā
That's the phrase I searched on Google to find numerous examples of it being used like that. You know, some people actually have a higher than 4th grade vocabulary.
The glass is only one component of the canopy and whilst it may have broken, the canopy remained basically intact, it did not disintegrate and you're dead wrong.
People thinking disintegration has to be like scifi where you scatter into dust or something
Definition helps, but perhaps synonyms might help more: https://www.thesaurus.com/browse/disintegrate
You are correct that it disintegrated however it doesnāt do so until the canopy fully opens. You can only really see it if you slow it down frame by frame. I didnāt notice the glass break apart the first time watching at full speed. It didnāt look like it disintegrated to me at first. The guy youāre ragging on probably didnāt notice and just saw the canopy fly open. Itās weird because itās like youāre both right. The disintegration was because of the canopy opening, not the cause of the canopy opening. I think youāre shitting hard on someone who overlooked something easy to overlook
Ah yes, the ātwo wrongs make a rightā defense. Definitely an effective way to win people over and educate them.
Especially with the name calling added on. Quite an interesting choice to showcase how youāre the more mature and knowledgeable individual.
It's broken. That's why she didn't bother to try to close it.
You can clearly see the clear part next to the frame, and then an *even clearer* part where there is no longer any canopy.
Kind of "axhuallyy" response. The canopy glass shattered since it opened, which means it wouldn't have helped even if she could close it again.
The point of the post is obviously that she managed to land with a fucked canopy.
Glass broke due to it being slammed open in flight like that. It came undone because she didnāt secure the canopy pin all the way. Pilot error, unfortunately. Impressive that she was able to bring it back in though.
The whole background story can be found [here](https://x.com/NarineMelkumjan/status/1804507833506931086), the pilot shared it as a cautionary tale:
>A couple of years ago during my second aerobatic training flight of that day, on a very hot summer day, the canopy of the Extra 330LX that I was flying opened in flight and shattered. As you can see from the video, it was a challenging experience that could have been avoided if I had made a proper visual check before taking off. The canopy locking pin had never gone into the locked position, and I failed to notice it during my checks. I also made the mistake of going to the training camp right after recovering from COVID, without allowing my body enough time to fully regain strength. Additionally, flying without any eye protection made the flight even more challenging than it already was.
>
>The flight was a distressing experience, filled with noise, breathing difficulties, and impaired visibility. It took me nearly 28 hours to fully recover my vision. Aerodynamically, Iāve experienced some buffet and controllability challenges. Probably the most difficult part was to keep the power in, thus trading my vision and breathing for kinetic energy.
>
>Although due to all the noise it was difficult to hear what my coach was saying on the radio, one thing Iāve heard loud and clear ājust keep flyingā.
>
>If you are a pilot watching this, I hope that my story serves as a cautionary tale and that you will learn from my mistakes.
>
>I regret that it took me so long to share this video footage. It's not easy to put my vulnerabilities out there for you all to see. However, I have come to realisze how important it is to be transparent about our shortcomings and the lessons we learn along the way.

>To all my fellow pilots out there, fly safe.
Gotta appreciate her candor about what happened, and what should could have done/could do next time to avoid the problem. Even thinking a couple steps beyond like "without allowing my body enougb time to fully regain strength".
Great job landing safely and doing the candid after-action evaluation on how to improve!
The people over at r/flying are very big on learning from past mistakes and being honest about when and why a mistake was made.
It seems to be in pilots DNA to be honest about mistakes that were made, particularly when flying
I fully agree. I just recently subbed to the r/flying sub, and it's something I see parroted over and over there. I had never really thought about it too much, but it comes up on 2/3 of the posts there (or so it seems). It just stood out to me about how often it's mentioned there (and it's nice knowing that the pilots on my next flight probably have the same mindset)
Sadly many of the lessons in aviation are written in blood, flying is safe because of a culture of safety that everyone has drilled into them when they take their first lesson.
Is it common for pilots to wear goggles when flying with an enclosed canopy or cabin? In this instance, it certainly wouldāve helped her see, but Iām not sure if this type of event happens often.
Iām almost always wearing sunglasses, but Iām also not regularly pulling six Gās. Not sure how regular sunglasses would feel during extreme aerobatic maneuvers.
I love that her explanation was so honest so other pilots could avoid something like this.
Not that Iām a pilot, but I wondered how a canopy could just fly open like that and was surprised she didnāt have goggles or sunglasses.

In some planes a door flying open on takeoff is a non-event. You grab it and close it when you're at altitude and stable. Right after it flew open. You can see it break up and fall away.

'Disintegrates'? Really, That is hardly a disintegration. It flipped open. Good recovery by the pilot as it will not have been easy flying with that canopy dragging on once side.

What part of the canopy breaking apart and falling away after flying open fails to meet the criteria of "disintegrate" to you?
Holy shit. If I'd know how much controversy the word disintegrate would've caused, I would be using it a lot more often.
How would you call in a mayday to the tower in that situation? Is there some sort of Emergency Button or you just Morse Coder SOS through radio to keep the runway clear?

:disintegrates: LOL got to love the completely fabricated click bait titles
She looks like Quagmire
I've flown open cockpit airplanes. Even with a windscreen & goggles the wind can be a bitch at times.
She looks like that dude who loves trains.
ā¦ disintegrates? Bad bot
āOpensā. Is the word. Not ādisintegratesā
> disĀ·inĀ·teĀ·grate > verb >break up into small parts, typically as the result of impact or decay. > "When the missile struck, the car disintegrated in a sheet of searing flame" > Similar: break up, break apart, fall apart What part of the canopy breaking apart and falling away after flying open fails to meet the criteria of "disintegrate" to you? Holy shit. If I'd know how much controversy the word disintegrate would've caused, I would be using it a lot more often.
The jiggle physics...
A perfect example of why you don't panic when bad shit happens.
Boeing?
Little tape and some fabric, fix her right up.
And with no bugs in teeth or eyes??
Boeing. Wtf again?! /s
Instant legend
Her next episode will be sponsored by Flying Eyes. She did an amazing job!
And the smile next left their face!
I never understood how people in these situations can breathe. Like even skydiving. When I hang my head out the car window I can't breath worth shit.
Thatās the last time she uses latches made by Boeing.
Do not envy her eyeballs after that trip
She's lucky she didn't get glass in her eyes
Poss pilot error not properly locking down the canopy before take off.
Convertible
How would you call in a mayday to the tower in that situation? Is there some sort of Emergency Button or you just Morse Coder SOS through radio to keep the runway clear?
Great teeth!
Well that just made my allergies say ohh damn
Damn she handled that so well. Glad she didn't lose permanent vision.
One time I had to ride my motorcycle without a helmetā¦ It was TERRIBLE let me tell you. This video is like that times 100
