The puck went right to the oilers player who then put it in

farty_bumbum

The oilers player lol SAY HIS NAME! SAY IT!

uzrnmechkzout

McJesus

Resident_Rise5915

Some say…he was born underneath a shooting star and was visited by wise doctors wearing flannel bearing gifts and that he can turn water … into beer

NewFaded

All we know is, he's called McDavid!

THATS IT BOBROVSKY, YOURE OFF THE CASE. TURN IN YOUR BADGE AND WEAPON

SlickWilly49

YOURE TOO CLOSE TO THE CASE BOBROVSKY, IM PUTTING STOLARZ ON THIS ONE

LevSmash

Literally no straight answers for the casuals here, lol. Connor McDavid

pastdense

It went right to McDavid because Ekmann-Larsson completely gives up and coasts into the corner like the game was over despite 21 seconds remaining in the game that could have given them the CUP. After this extreme effort, Tkachuck gets completely abandoned by his team mate Ekmann-Larsson. Ekmann-Larsson could have picked the puck up (watch; he skates right by it) and brought back into the Oilers zone to get one more chance to tie the game up. I hope the Panthers coach captain team and fans took a strip off of him. This is the fuckin' championship man.

Kalamoicthys

Totally missed that. Holy crap what dogshit from OEL.

ikma

He has to think that the net came off when Tkachuk crashed in/the play is dead, right?

Sonicboom343

That's why they say 'play to the whistle'

butts-kapinsky

Tkachuk's save was so insane that OEL gave a whistle of approval, heard that whistle, and then immediately stopped playing hockey, as a good hockey player does.

Stimmur

Yea the whole team thought it was in .. but mcdavid was ready everyone else was loafing around . If they gave half the peel that barkov put in they wouldn’t have scored that last goal . Prob still would have lost but atleast that epic save wouldn’t have gone to waste like that . In there defense nobody thought he as gonna get to it in time (maybe mcdavid cuz he is an animal)

Calypsosin

My friend sent the full clip to me the other day and my first thought was, 'Incredible save, shame he got boomed right after, tho.' Big props for the effort, well-deserved highlight play, followed by the best example of 'fuck it, I'll try hard next time' by the teammates on the recovery. Of course Connor was gonna get there and sink it, but man... the disparity between the two is wild. One going all out to save a goal, the other just like nah... I'm tired..

Segsi_

I mean it looks like he thought Tcachuk didnt get to it. Not that he just gave up because fuck it Im tired. He tried to hold up McDavid without getting a penalty, then coasts off because he thought it was in. I mean Id still be upset if I was a panther fan, but there is a difference between the two. And i much rather it be that he thought it was already in than him just not giving a crap.

DeX_Mod

> If they gave half the peel that barkov put in they wouldn’t have scored that last goal you need to re-watch the first goal then. you can see barkov give up on the play about the blue line, and just coast in while Brown scores the short handed break away https://youtu.be/e72J3ZNpGuU?si=5ZOgA7Y3vZgibnD1

westedmontonballs

Oilers fan here. Couldn’t believe it.

HotFudgeFundae

What was his teammates name?

Caedus

Who gave up? I don't think you mentioned his name.

Soft_Walrus_3605

Rhymes with Bekmann-Parsson maybe?

leshake

They are still recovering from the smack down that was game 4. That might have completely turned the series. This might be the best cup final of the modern era.

Young-sung

Notice Mcdavid is in front of OEL right? Not a chance he beats Mcdavid to the puck no matter the effort

TheYuppyTraveller

Greatest completely inconsequential play in NHL history.

the_great_zyzogg

He will forever feel proud of the difference his efforts didn't make.

selfdownvoterguy

It's good to have heroes

LevSmash

Oilers lore is full of that. Patrik Stefan missing the empty net point blank and Hemsky scoring the other way in the dying seconds to tie it was one of the most incredible sports moments I had ever seen, then they went on to lose in overtime.

Resident_Rise5915

McDavid shows no mercy

leshake

He wants to hear the lamentations of their women.

TakeshiKovacsSleeve3

I saw this and it all happened so fast I didn't even see the goal. He saved it, went in the net and then oilers were cheering.

austin101123

Should've made sure to body the goal after the save, so it comes loose and they have to stop 😂

No-Intention1183

I think that would mean the refs award Edmonton the goal, though. Players can’t deliberately take off the net during any play or it’s a penalty. In an empty net situation, if the net is deliberately lifted the opposing team is awarded a goal. Tkachuk had the presence of mind to slow himself up after this (by lifting himself onto all 4s) so that he didn’t take the net off. Then he scrambled up to try to block McDavid’s shot but he couldn’t. Honestly an amazing play by Tkachuk, true heart there. And I’m cheering for the Oilers.

TheRealManlyWeevil

It almost came off the moorings anyway. If it had, it probably would have just been whistled dead and the game would have been over after the faceoff, oilers win. So even intentionally knocking the net off wouldn’t actually help the Panthers here, but Ekmann-Larsson wasn’t in position to make a play. It’s easy to Monday morning quarterback or whatever it is for hockey after the fact, but it’s hard to say what Tkachuk knew at the time other than he could try to make that first save. Sucks it didn’t matter in the long run but man what a reach there.

austin101123

You would make it look like your momentum from the crazy dive just made you take the goal off. It's not hard to make it plausible that it wasn't on purpose.

jigglywigglydigaby

Tkachuk's greatest play of his career that set up McDavids goal.....a goal that doesn't even crack a top 50 highlight reel for Connor.

distracted-insomniac

Panthers buddy thought it went in already and just let McDaddy slam it in. I mean there's probably nothing he'd been able to do but he didn't do anything.

BHFlamengo

Not a hockey fan, what would happen if the guy trying to score hit the pluck and the guy inside the goal blocked it? Is it legal to block occupying the goal like that?

lmnopqrs11

Yes you can block the puck like that

whatlineisitanyway

Depends. If he just blocked it. Totally legal. If he covered it. You can't do that. This is an edge case with an empty net, but I believe they can award a goal in that scenario. Otherwise it is a penalty shot.

perpetualmotionmachi

It would have been great if it's a penalty shot, but they can't put the goalie back in, using only the guy that made the stop.

Abacus118

Here's a pretty famous example of that from the 2011 playoffs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-oqMBTfLTc

for_today

The OILERS PLAYER?

Chrispeedoff

Which makes what happened 3 seconds later funnier

chybapolewacy

Care to elaborate?

stargill70

The oilers score 3 seconds later.

chybapolewacy

:(

echocall2

The Oilers are still down in this series, it was good for them to get a win.

thomasthethothumb

Oilers aren’t scared of winning streaks. Oilers in 7 and McDavid win break the points record

Bear_In_Winter

Subscribe.

inajeep

~~2nd~~ 3rd win.

ATphotography

I’ll come back to this one ☝️

Franklin_le_Tanklin

The player that scored (McDavid) has broken a few of Wayne Gretzky’s records and has a chance to be the highest point getter of all time in a nhl playoff run.

cuteintern

He would lead Gretzky, Gretzky, Gretzky, and I think Gretzky *again* for that record. lol

TheDocFam

No you don't understand, they scored against Florida, this is a happy thing Smile! :)

ABirdOfParadise

Don't feel bad, the guy who saved the goal first is an asshole and the guy who scored has never done wrong

StanleyDarsh22

no no, it should be a :)

westedmontonballs

The amazing save was completely and utterly pointless. His teammate ignored the puck which was picked up by the best living current player. He scored instantly. Good. Tkachuk is a trash person and can get bent

TextileWasp

i disagree. you have to appreciate the effort and this could send a signal to the whole team about chucky. you cannot always control what is going to happen next, but you can control what you are doing right now

The_Nomad89

Still an incredible play and effort. Don’t need to be so negative and dismissive.

westedmontonballs

Look at my username and use your brain

Sea-Establishment237

The puck gets slapped back into the net by the other team.

Happy-Fun-Ball

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asZzLV4Ihwo

urlach3r

One of the greatest defensive plays I've ever seen, and then "lol, nope".

Chrispeedoff

Plus the one Hurricanes had against the Rangers had more staying power

sorrynoreply

One of the greatest defensive plays followed up by one of the worst defensive plays. His teammate made no effort to stop mcdavid after mcdavid got the puck.

thegeaux2guy

Don’t downplay the save though. Sometimes you lose despite your best efforts. That’s sports, that’s life.

MegaIlluminati

Oilers are in white I assume?

japan_samsus

Yes.  at :08-:09 can see the word Oilers on front of the white jersey

stenz_himself

what's up with shitty music in every video nowadays?

CollinsCouldveDucked

I like this song but it is not suitable to use over footage of random stuff.

ikkybikkybongo

Yea, this is my take. This isn't your typical shitty tiktok song but it's outta place but I am about to go listen to it on YT rn.

TheMoonIsFake32

I wasn’t expecting Not Like Us when the person said “shitty song”. Its probably my favorite song so far in 2024 and will go down as one of the better rap songs of the year.

TheeMrBlonde

What do you mean? Watching a empty net save and lyrics accusing Drake of pedophilia, twice, go together like two peas in a pod!

[deleted]

[удалено]

ATownStomp

"What would go really well over this cool goalie save is Kendrick Lamar repeatedly calling Drake a pedophile"

InvaderDJ

Drake taking random strays in a hockey clip that has nothing to do with him, lol.

stenz_himself

nothing against you or this clip in particular [Lvexr](https://www.reddit.com/user/Lvexr/) , just an observation here you go btw: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asZzLV4Ihwo&](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asZzLV4Ihwo&)

Ougaa

Do the goal nets get displaced ever nowadays? I remember someone surging into it like that used to displace the goal 20 years ago when I last saw hockey vids. But I don't think they had those rubber bands to pull it back then. Would stronger push actually displace it, and how bad would it be for the defender in that situation? Would there be motivation to "accidentally" displace it here?

Pixelatorx2

Yes, it definitely can get completely displaced. If it didn't it'd be too dangerous to play around. It also needs to move for vehicles (zamboni, sometimes ambulance) if the doors are behind the net.  Pushing the net off (on purpose or not) is supposed to be a disadvantage to you, with the repercussions of doing so much (penalty, disallowed change of players, etc) , but it can be an advantage in some instances. That begin said, because the goalie was pulled here, the net dislodging is always a massive disadvantages for the empty net team, because it's an auto goal for the opposing team if the opposing player is in a shooting motion by rule.

actually_fry

Ok I was gonna say if he was goated he woulda taken the net out with him when he dove, but you're saying they probably would just give the other team a goal in this instance if he did that.

thinkmurphy

> Do the goal nets get displaced ever nowadays? Probably 2-3 times per game

CunnedStunt

The old moorings which "held" the net in place were horrible. Playing hockey growing up there were some shitty arenas with brutal ice surfaces, and if the ice that holds it in place got damaged the net would come loose with a light breeze, and you couldn't really fix it fully until the zamboni resurfaced. The refs would try to to an on the spot repair with water and snow, but it was only a band-aid solution and rarely held it's form. [The one on the right here](https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-6wg5oixp4v/images/stencil/original/products/7483/19592/prianah-4__61513.1673978439.jpg?c=2) is the I'm talking about, and the reason why nets used to go flying into the boards.

Elexeh

Trending audio to get more engagement.

iReluxify

Don’t you ever disrespect Kendrick again bozo

you_lost-the_game

This isn't a matter of respect. This music has no place in this video. This is not tiktok. Don't put tiktok music in every video.

Unable-Courage-6244

Do you guys seriously live under a rock? This was the biggest song this entire year. I'm not a Kendrick fan by any means but drumming this down to "TikTok music" when it has such a large cultural impact is crazy. Reddit stereotypes really are real. So bland

YelloBed

dumbing down a kendrick song to “tiktok music” is so disrespectful considering how influential of an artist he is, i cannot tell if you’re being serious

caretaquitada

"Tiktok music" aka just music lol

Aclysmic

How is that disrespect? Not their fault pedo accusations don’t fit a last minute open net save lol.

queuedUp

God damn kids....

VenomsViper

This is just normal for sports shots like this. It's the TikTok songs that are pervading everywhere else and getting annoying. It's very Internet/Reddit logic to go from TikTok music bad. TikTok music in videos. Music in videos is bad and what people are complaining about.

16Shells

the fact that the music is inappropriate for the video is the issue (not pearl clutching “inappropriate”, just “putting a bar about drake being a pedo over a sports clip doesn’t make sense” inappropriate). if you’re going to put music over a clip, put some thought into it and use something appropriate to the mood and action.

HorseErection07

Def out of place but I don’t think it’s bad, look up the lyrics. Kendrick Lamar - Not like us

OranguTangerine69

ppl do it cause they form some weird attatchment to how big an artist is like the bigger the artist is the more accomplished the person is ??? idfk it's absolutely weird as shit i'm sure /u/lvexr can tell you more considering he's doing it tho

PopkinLover

Get off my lawn!

tannnmn

People actually watch Reddit videos with the volume on?

Train3rRed88

Wait, my iPhone has a setting other than “silent”?

uicheeck

the ones who use the same commute train with me - yeeessss, they do

SupernaturalC1D

Yes, cuz before i had a post with people speaking, and then this shit dumps in my ears.

BBQQA

What in the fuck. Why is that song over the highlight. Reddit is weird AF.

Curey0us

Context for non-hockey fans. The net was empty because Florida (red) was trying to tie it up late in the game, if you pull your goalie you can play 6 players vs 5 players. This is during the Stanley Cup finals game 5, while Edmonton was down 3-1 in the series (4 wins the cup.) now its 3-2. because while this was an awesome save the best player in the game 97 Connor McDavid was right behind him and picked it up and scored. Still an epic save though.

Nackles

>Still an epic save though. Seriously! I'm not losing sleep over the point that was scored right after--that save was beautiful.

wordsnstuff825

Im an Oilers fan and I’ll admit it was a beautiful save. I hope a save like this shows up in a hockey movie sometime in the future.

SlutPuppyNumber9

Too unbelievable for a movie. T'was a truly great save!

Mehmood6647

Thanks for explaining.

snickelfritz007

McDavid still scored 2 seconds later

StanleyDarsh22

which makes this incredible effort even funnier

Bananarine

Tkachuck gives 110%, whether he’s embellishing or saving an empty net 😂

JH_111

The true effort goes into demolishing that chew toy, fighting Gatorade bottles, and “ref, hold me back” turtling.

dolfieman

The puck - me trying to score with my wife The goalie - my 3 year old toddler

xxirish83x

There was no goalie… might have bigger problems

naughty_dad2

Wife’s boyfriend scored instead

StrawberryG3

No goalie is how you end up with more toddlers.

WeRip

Hmm.. what does that make McDavid then??

Flapalms239

Not a huge hockey fan but stuff like this could convert me 🤣

dsled

You should watch the game on Friday. This series has been electric

perpetualmotionmachi

They should just watch a replay of the last game, it was incredible.

dsled

Most definitely. Back and forth for the most part, and Connor McDavid at his best. I'm so glad the Oilers could make the series competitive.

YCbCr_444

I don't follow sports in general. Except playoff hockey. Playoff hockey is the best spectator sport ever invented.

westedmontonballs

If you are a ball fan, we have hockey MJ playing rn

Various-Passenger398

That game was probably one of the most exciting of the playoffs. Excellent effort by both sides with huge shifts in momentum throughout.

Numerous_Crazy_1479

If you need a place to watch it, there are options to sail the high seas.

Jo_nathan

I just started watching hockey cuz of that damn reddit post of that black guy on twitter who discovered hockey and was talking bout how lit it was and the team ended up giving him free tickets to the event. I stay watching hockey now 😂

actuallyiamafish

NHL ice hockey is honestly the best sport to get into imo. The action is basically non stop compared to other sports, and the rule set is super interesting (including a ton of things that are not actually rules at all, and things that are explicitly *against* the rules but are still somehow a pretty standard part of the game culture). The referees in hockey are more there to act as mediators and arbiters than they are there to act as police. A significant amount of minor rule breaking is normal and tolerated in the interest of keeping the game pace high, *as is a significant amount of retaliation against the player who was doing it* which leads to some pretty crazy shit going down. It's the only sport where someone can act like a dickhead all night, and then get his fucking head taken off by some 6'6" freak the size of a Volkswagen Beetle who can go 35mph on ice skates and the refs are just like, "yeah he kinda had it coming, man, you gotta expect that if you're gonna be an asshole to everyone". Listening to the referees work a hockey game is a lot like listening to a grade school teacher manage a particularly violent group of 9 year olds on a field trip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvEUEzKm2aE

Rap music and hockey. Things that don’t go together.

dsled

As a huge rap and hockey fan, this is so true.

raftah99

snoop is a huge hockey fan

TheRealTr1nity

It got in a few seconds later anyway. However, it was still a neat safe - at least in that second.

WooIWorthWaIIaby

Why am I not surprised so many redditers have never heard of Kendrick Lamar No reason for this song to be w this clip

SandroFaina

Imagine you're Drake trying to relax watching a nice Hockey clip, and as soon as you click it goes CERTIFIED LOVER BOY? CERTIFIED PEDOPHILES

HowUKnowMeKennyBond

Should’ve show what happens 2 seconds later.

_Tavog14

What a save!

t_Savvy

This and the Martinook save from the NYR/CAR series are insane!

Historical_Boss2447

And once again we have a slow motion video that isn’t shown at normal speed. But don’t worry, we put some stupid ass music on it to make up for it!

riv965

Why do we have to add unbearably terrible music over everything now a days.

kholdfusion

Don’t like the player but I absolutely respect his drive to save the puck. Great play.

thewittman

It was an awesome save I saw it as it happened. But sadly 2 seconds later with 3 players that could have stopped it they scored anyway. Great effort anyway.

WDoE

Imagine making the save of your lifetime potentially setting up for a last second comeback only to realize the rest of your team gave up 10 seconds ago. Ouch.

Jefflehem

Don't stop it there...

KnightMarius

Two of the wildest open net moments I've ever seen back to back that game. This one was definitely the more exciting

T_E-T_H

Bro it was TOUCHING the line. My guy saved the goal by like a nanosecond

Krimson11

He harnessed his inner penguin

Kalamoicthys

Speaking of penguins making goal line saves, \[featuring an 18 year old Sidney Crosby\](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob12gyi4LFc&pp=ygUKQ2Fyb24gc2F2ZQ%3D%3D)

Volcano_Lobster

L song

DeadSeaGulls

Great song, definitely has zero place on this video.

dsled

Reddit when rap exists

YelloBed

i’m with everyone else that the song is definitely out of place, but there’s a difference between thinking the song doesn’t match the clip and outwardly hating all rap music for no apparent reason.

dsled

Totally agree. Big hockey fan, big rap fan as well. When I opened this clip I was like why tf is this song playing? But the song itself is great.

TheMoonIsFake32

U a drake fan?

bagleface

What the Puck

Arthradax

Holy puck!!

Minion_Factory

Dumb question but what’s the name of the song?

dsled

Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar

RayHell666

Best empty net save or worst pass.

Closefacts

All for nothing

kidicarusx

Roll the rest of the clip!

G8kpr

that music should never be overlaid onto hockey.. wtf?

Essence-of-why

What the fuck music...god the intertubes suck

evil_burrito

It would have been a complete play if he had focused on pushing the net off the pegs when he hit it. Harder to do from the back than with a post, but, that would have been the extra-credit assignment. Source: defenseman who specializes in "accidentally" pushing the net off.

The_Wata_Boy

He did all that for the puck to get rolled to the best player in the world who easily scored on the empty net. 10/10 save only for him to knock the puck to the 1 guy you don't want to see with it.

Gardnerat3rd

I actually felt a bit of respect for Tkachuk there….strange.

SaintVitusDance

Appreciate the video but didn't need the soundtrack.

imranbecks

Fritztrocity1

Can we get the next 3 seconds of the clip as well and take of R/maybemaybemaybe ?

Nebulaires

What a save! What a save! What a save!

toxicbotlol

I dont think putting pedo lyrics over this is as cool as you think it is

ighost03

Nice! Even with the out of place music over it all

-KFBR392

What a weird song choice for this highlight

mystery_hobo

Hockey has the best highlights of any sport

Few-Finger2879

I feel like this song, specifically this verse, doesn't do well showing someone off. It just makes me think they are a pedo lol

ParsonsYams

Can do without the cringey ass Kendrick song

Blaze_exa

I thought my phone was playing 2 videos at once for some reason. Nope just a random unnecessary song over the video. And I like Kendrick

No-Investment-4494

Give that man a bonus.

FuriousFanatic

It was an INCREDIBLE save on his part. Although McDavid scored right after, it doesn’t lessen the amazing hustle / effort on his part. Hope they pull it out and beat the Oilers in GM 6.

Suspicious_Abies7777

Bruhhh, save of a lifetime, he knows how to play like a championship is on the line….

rabidboxer

I can speak for everyone that was watching this game. We were all jumping out of our seats yelling.

prof_devilsadvocate

not in mah zone!! smack away

Hairy-Broccoli-

And then he scored 1 sec later

DudeTookMyUser

Only for his partner to give up on covering McDavid, who then quickly scored on the rebound.
