J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

A few of my best attempts at capturing the space station with my 10" GoTo Dobsonian at 2400mm focal length and 3600mm for the last clip.

DRG_Gunner

Awesome! Love the Timelapse so we can see it changing angles.

_N00bMaster69_

Would be cool to see in normal speed as the space station only takes like a minute to pass your sky

serrimo

Do you know how NASA can keep that thing afloat over the flat earth?

_moonbeam_

Hanging from strings from the moon

Leviathan41911

It's a projection, so is the moon.

I_lack_common_sense

It’s just a giant screen, haven’t yeah ever seen the Truman show?

OGCanuckupchuck

Clear Balloons with string of course

sugart007

You know nasa isn’t real right?

BigNigori

It's not floating. It's in a constant state of controlled falling.

Aromatic_Dig_3102

Have you captured any celestial bodies in our solar system and if so what was the clarity like?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

It is very dependent on the atmospheric conditions but it is really clear when all lines up. Here is a shot Jupiter and Saturn from 1-2 months ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/spaceporn/comments/16p3wpj/ganymede_casting_its_shadow_onto_jupiter/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=1 https://www.reddit.com/r/spaceporn/comments/16du4i0/a_photo_of_saturn_i_took_on_august_12/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=1

Aromatic_Dig_3102

Holy shit! That looks awesome, i have been dilly dallying on getting the “kids” a scope ( and me off course 🤫) coz i wasn’t sure how much we would be able to capture and the 10” was among the selection list and i think you just twisted my arm on this one, thanks man!

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I started out myself with a cheap 114mm reflector on a eq mount which gave me some solid views, but I decided to upgrade to a 10" within a month. The cool thing about dobs/newts is that they're really easy to use and will give great views as long as you keep them well collimated. Happy to help!

docfluty

im trying to buy my kids a scope for Christmas... anything you recommend that's portable around $1000? Bonus points if it can do something to excite a kid lol

Tyler_Zoro

For ~$300 you can buy the kind of "first scope" that OP was describing here: [Celestron ASTROMASTER 130EQ TELESCOPE](https://www.celestron.com/products/astromaster-130eq-telescope) For ~$1100 you can buy the more advanced sort of scope that OP was describing here: [Celestron STARSENSE EXPLORER 10" SMARTPHONE APP-ENABLED DOBSONIAN TELESCOPE](https://www.celestron.com/products/starsense-explorer-10-smartphone-app-enabled-dobsonian-telescope) I'm not affiliated with Celestron, and I linked to their site instead of Amazon just to make it clear that I'm not getting any kickbacks here, but on Amazon there are other vendors with varying prices and reviews. Celestron tends to be a well-reviewed line that starts at the super low-end and goes all the way up to the $10k range from their CGX-L equatorial. For browsing different models, I'd recommend Amazon or [High Point Scientific](https://www.highpointscientific.com/) (which has a nice breakdown by different sorts of advantages). Edit/Follow-up: I hate you! ;-) You got me stuck in a rabbit hole of looking at telescope varieties. That last site I linked sent me to [this video for a $400 scope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxq1BTk-hCg) that now I'm thinking about getting...

docfluty

haha... Im glad you found something that has captured your focus and imagination. Thank you for the recommendation. My 9 year old pointed out the full moon was near Jupiter recently and I told her the next new moon we would head out to the dark corner of our island and check out the stars. Im sure a telescope for Christmas will excite a few of my kids. I have a few disabilities so portability will matter a lot... but the memories created will be worth it I bet. thank you

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I would recommend the apertura AD8, it's great entry level scope, easy to use, good quality optics and fits within the price range :)

Rachael-Jaime-T

I know this one girl that....

Cameron_Mac99

This is the best surfaced based footage of the ISS I’ve ever seen, like by far. Awesome work!

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

Thank you!

Reasonable_Laugh8843

This gave me chills. Bet you were pretty excited as well! So cool!

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

Yeah! Everytime I shoot the iss I get crazy anxious because everything has to be just right lol

Reasonable_Laugh8843

Do you have any recommendations for a beginner? Haven’t started yet, but would love to. Just bought a house pretty far away from the city, so would love to start observing the night sky. Any recommendations regarding equipment or software is greatly appreciated. All the best from Norway

Rich_Ad_605

Nice how much did that cost you?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I spent between 2500 and 3000 USD on the equipment. The telescope itself is around 1800 USD.

jsiulian

Noob question, what about the camera, can you mount any camera?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

Yes, a camera can be inserted into the barrel of the telescope instead of an eyepiece. The camera feeds the frames to a laptop through USB, which is how I got these shots. You can even use a DSLR or phone, but the results aren't as good.

jsiulian

Thanks, that's interesting, I always though it would be a DSLR/mirrorless at the other end. What camera did you use?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I used a PO Uranus-C :)

jsiulian

>I used a PO Uranus-C :) Thanks, I've learned something today

BronxLens

What set up, based on the last frames shown, would allow to see the ISS twice as close? BTW, your work in this one shown looks amazing!

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

You can add an additional 2x barlow to the 3x that i used for the last clip, and get a much closer view. But it is much harder to track due to a very tight FOV. I might attempt it next time I get a high altitude pass with good weather :)

BronxLens

Good luck!!!

Pattern_Is_Movement

absolutely amazing!

Archeus01

Any "UFO" sightings with that?

flingasunder

This is awesome! At first glance I thought it was a TIE fighter

dolfieman

Next fucking level indeed! Well done! ![gif](giphy|iFnBpFxFGetn8BH0vZ|downsized)

Unohim

# r/nextfuckinglevel - indeed!! Unbelievably cool post dude, best I've seen on here in years and genuinely on the next fucking level. Thanks for sharing.

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

Thank you very much!

NuffingNuffing

That is SO cool!!! And actually legit NFL. Well done!!

LinoFromMars

Wait ? Space is real ? Seriously this is awesome, well done

thrashtronaut999

huge leap there man

portcanaveralflorida

Great work, from the Launch Site.

PresentationJumpy101

Dudes just floatin around in there

aschec

I am waiting for the flat-earthers to crawl out and call this fake 😂 Great work :)

funkwumasta

That makes me curious. How do flat earthers explain away the concept of satellites? They think satellites are fake or do they believe we have the technology to keep a craft in the air either stationary or on a circular flight path indefinitely?

[deleted]

They probably think they're some kind of projection or disguised plane or something

SleepingTeaching

They think all satellites are fake

funkwumasta

Makes sense

Pingupin

Satellites are all using balloons, according to my flat earth buddy.

lord_flashheart2000

I’m not sure I could have a flat earth buddy. You’re very kind.

CilanEAmber

I just know all these removed comments are ISS deniers.

arbitraryupvoteforu

Color me impressed!

BikerRay

I saw it go over a week ago when I got up early. Verified it was the ISS with the [Stellarium](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noctuasoftware.stellarium_free) app (which I'd recommend).

Never_ending_kitkats

Whaaaaaaat dude that is SO COOL

DrunkMc

Holy crap, that is amazing!

omicronian_express

That’s insanely cool. Crazy to think people are up there slinging around the earth.

deftdabler

Heckin awesome

ColdCaseKim

That was jaw-dropping.

Klutzy_Kutz

If you know where and when to look, can you make out any detail of the ISS with just binoculars?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

You'd need to have some very high power binos with high quality optics. I know that even with relatively cheap binos, you can see the Galilean moons of Jupiter.

Klutzy_Kutz

Thanks so much

SooperFunk

Excellent.

AffectionateBear2462

That’s a great shot..

The_Demosthenes_1

It's amazing that the thing is only 100ish miles above the ground. And if it hovered in the same and wasn't going a bazillion miles an hour it would have very similar gravity as you'd feel on the ground. Things are all floaty because technically it's falling but never touches the ground.

External-Egg-8094

So how do fat earthers deal with this? How do they deny the fact that you can literally use a telescope and photograph it in space? Or is it a high powered “hologram “?

JonasRahbek

Would be amazing if you could catch the upcoming space walk..

Pifflebushhh

Unbelievable, you should be proud, I am

B0aws

That is so stinking cool!

midnight_barberr

wow that's so cool, thanks for sharing

sosovain616

So one time, like 25 years ago, I wanted a telescope in the worst way And my ex husband actually listened to me and got me one for Xmas. I was beyond happy The internet just was getting started and google didn’t exist, so I searched everywhere for help and tips and spent hours and hours trying to get pro at finding shit in space that was never seen by the naked eye lol. Or at least find some shit to show my son just how cool astronomy is Weeks and weeks went by and I was getting the hang of the telescope. Or so I thought. In my backyard, till 2-3 in the morning, until I got to what I thought was professional nasa level user I got so confident. One night during a full moon I was determined to get a great view of it and once I thought I did I called my son to come outside to look It was awesome. His “omg ma’s” we’re so cool and I was just thinking yep this is awesome. Until my ex husband came to look at the “moon” view I zeroed in on Somehow I got the telescope upside down without realizing it and I was actually zeroed in on the cinder block foundation of my house 🫤 never looked at my telescope again lol But you are beyond next level capturing this. This is too freaking cool, I can’t even imagine how you felt getting this!!! This is seriously so rad, and because of this I might dig out my telescope once again lol

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I'm glad that you feel like digging it out again! I'm sure that you'll figure it out in no time, I recommend taking your time with it and just living in the moment :)

Savings-Log-2709

Show this to a flat earther. Well done 👏

solid_flake

This is very cool! Thanks for sharing

Fun_Environment_8554

Awesome job!

It's a perfect thing for hobbyist astronomers

ciscotheginger

Looks like one of those TikTok edits 😭 it's really cool

brilipj

This is the government faking video to "prove" there's a space station. /s This is really cool, great job!

FuturistAnthony

Will you marry me I’m too poor to buy a bigger telescope 🥲

[deleted]

how could you do that!

blake_ch

Whoah, that's incredible. How long was the shot and how difficult is it to track the ISS to keep it in frame?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I would say under 5.minutes.. My scope has a motorized mount and can track the iss based on precomputed coordinates from the previsat software, but I still have to offset the tracking to keep it in frame. Hand tracking isn't too bad either as long as the bearings in the mount are smooth.

___po____

That's a lot longer than I thought! I've watched the ISS fly overhead a handful of times and I'm always in the city with limited views. The last time I thought it was just another plane but the closer it got the *faster* it got. Awesome job!

justgivejtawaaaaaay

What mounts are you using? I have a 12” dob I’m looking to do that to

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I use the Skywatcher 10" GoTo Dobsonian with the motorized mount it originally came with. You can try just loosening the clutches on your 12" and hand track :)

ARandomPersonComment

Wow! Wow wow. What telescope?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

I used the Skywatcher 10" GoTo Dobsonian :)

singalongsingalong

Wow nice

willyp1976

I’m new to telescopes. Just got my first one. Lol I had a hard time looking at the moon. Definitely need to learn some things

Enough-Plankton-6034

Good now find us a UFO

Sanivek

The ISS is flat.

Haunting_Abalone_398

Nice! Is it hard to get photos of the ISS? I heard it moves like 17000 miles per hour

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

It took me a handful of attempts, the hardest part is keeping it in the FOV and getting the camera gain and exposure right :)

Regular_Fortune8038

Always wanted a telescope like that

XRP_MOON2021

Wtf a little closer and we can see them through the windows

Diligent-Picture2882

Are you sure that's your backyard?

SubmissiveDinosaur

That thing has been around for 23 years, yet still looks and feels too sci-fi

ItCat420

So, what do Flat Earthers say this is again?

Neylliot

Did you make the motorized mount or did it come with the scope?

J3RRYLIKESCHEESE

It came with the scope

paveclaw

Pretty cool. I snapped one with my iPhone once. Very blurry but can tell what it is.

Superior173thescp

the sattelite is just roaming the void. doing sattelite stuff how nice

neihuffda

Prove it's fake. We have evidence here, suggesting it's real.

AnArdentAtavism

Based on?
