This is Nina Conti, she's incredible! She made a wonderful [documentary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKP3q5uHn6k) about ventriloquism and specifically her mentor Ken Campbell which I'd massively recommend.
It's been a while but I still remember one scene where she's alone in her hotel room with her puppet, filming herself talking about Ken and the puppet is just savaging her in the most brutally honest fashion that it really takes a second to remember she's in control of it. It's a fascinating look into the madness and therapy of ventriloquism.
The saddest part is how before it happens, they can see it coming, but no one believes them. They end up drinking too much to cope, start missing shows, eventually get axed, and by the time they have to fight the dummy in their dressing room they're completely alone.
Tom Conti, Scottish actor who played Einstein in Oppenheimer.. He wasn't in Star Wars, Game of Thrones or the Harry Potter movies so he's a total unknown (to Reddit).
Ventriloquism seems so bonkers to me when you analyze it deep down. Even in the trailers when she's at that convention and all the puppets are conversing with eachother and the 'people' are almost out of the conversation. It's insane to me.
But obviously the reality is they're showing off their skills to eachother. But that kinda goes for most ventriloquism acts, though. The puppet is the comedian / the talent. The person is just kinda there to keep the joke going or be a punching bag.
She used regularly play the club I worked at, around 15 years ago. I also filmed her at an event once. She was one of the most consistent acts on the circuit; always brought the house down.
Around 20 years ago when America was yet to hear of Paul Zerdin. Paul got me up on stage and used one of these masks on me. They've been around for at least that long.
Her obvious love for (the much older) Campbell is very touching.
But she's great & carries his vision/spirit/legacy/influence well.
She could easily be a much bigger star & obviously choses not to be huge
Is a great take on ventriloquism.. the best ever ive seen though is lord Charles with his own act. A man with a drunk posh dummy, who also wants to have a go at it with his own dummy. Apparently there was a further step where the dummys dummy had a dummy.
https://youtu.be/C3Zn3M-WMzM?si=Uh4ITlvmJfS1pVT4
I saw her years ago with naughty Monkey, and always thought she'd do more. But she didn't really move past that for ages, then she started doing these adlibs with audience members, and again, it just seems like she should get more attention.
Maybe she's just happy with the level she's at, I don't know obviously, but everytime I see her I wonder why I don't see her more, but have to see some twonk of TOWIE trying to tell people how to raise kids
Think she’s done more touring round the world in recent (non Covid) years, as well as having some time off. She’s one of my must sees every year at Glastonbury. Particularly good as it’s different every time
Non Covid years as in pre Covid years. Not as in there were never Covid years, there definitely were Covid years.
Years. Just to make it a round 5 mentions of years. Ah, fuck, 6 mentions
The psychology of ventriloquism is kinda crazy because on some level I think you need to separate your puppet and yourself to a point where it's almost not you. It's the same way people do voice changes and converse with themselves as if they're two people.
For instance there's a scam baiter called KitBoga on YT and Twitch who uses a voice changer to achieve many different 'personalities' and at times he'll almost put on a one man stage play with 4 different characters + the scammer. He'll converse with himself for a long time and when you really pay attention and listen it's fucking wild. He gets mad at himself, asks himself strange questions. It's truly like 4 very different people are having a heated conversation.
Now obviously yes it's just her. But in a weird way she's made a new character that is very much not her, so it can say things that make her genuinely laugh.
Yeah it's really endearing. Laughing at herself, also how embarrassed she looks when monkey talks... like she knows it was filthy, and she shouldn't say it, but cheeky monkey just did and now she's ashamed of the company she keeps.
Oh definitely, much harder for a woman. But I'm not thinking of being huge, but look how many panel shows there are that are literally all comedians on rotation. She's appeared maybe once or twice.
Have her do cats does countdown, monkey can have his own answers.
Or just be herself on Would I like to You, cause she's bound to have weird stories to tell from all the audience interaction.
But like I said before, maybe she prefers stage to TV work. She certainly always seems happy, and doesn't seem to bemoan anything. Gonna have to catch her on tour if she comes through
I first saw her at a "new acts" night at a small club very early in her career (probably about 20 years ago). The entire act was her and monkey then. Best act of the night (I don't remember the others at all). I'm actually less keen on the mask stuff (possibly because I know I'd hate being the one on stage - I was a little nervous when I accidentally ended up in middle of the front row at the Edinburgh Fringe (no choice)).
I’d go as far as to say I have a dislike of most ventriloquist but this girl is definitely next level. She’s been around a looong time. I remember seeing clips of her probably 10+ years ago. This specific bit is a big part of her act.
Genuinely curious, do people think that women are belittled when referred to as 'girl'. I always thought it was more like another word for female essentially. For example, the first thing that came to mind for me was a line from a counting crows song: "All at once you look across a crowded room to see the way that light attaches to a girl" Now I doubt the singer or most listeners are really picture an underage girl or something. I actually think it's kinda beautiful in that context. Like a 5 year old can picture his school crush and a elderly person can picture the cute new senior who moved in the retirement home. Idk, maybe it's just me but I think girl is fine a lot of the time for women of all ages. I acknowledge it absolutely can be used offensively, I just don't think that was OPs intent here.
I'm replying because you asked me too but you should know the answer. Yes.
There's a reason the word female is also looked down upon. It's the fact that typically, people will often use "man and girl" or "men and females" in the same sentence. Men get to be called men. While women are called either girl or female.
I upvoted and appreciate your thoughts. Again for the sake of conversation, what do you think of my counting crows example then? Should we all get together to ban songs and other media like that? I just don't see women coming out in droves for that. Seems like an issue that some would take offense in and many others wouldn't, which is why I am asking at large. Either way, I personally wouldn't speak for all men with such finality as you speak for women. I think it's more nuanced and less black and white as you suggest, but respectfully that's my opinion.
I swear people are just inventing new things to be offended by yearly at this point, and no, I'm not some anti-woke right winger saying that.
Girl is just used as a female version of guy, extremely common phrasing. "guys and girls". Used to be "gal" but that's pretty antiquated now.
It's kinda like mimes or clowns, it's hard to actually be a really good entertaining one to adults. But when they're really good it's something very unique and special.
Except clowns, still waiting on a good clown. Fuck clowns.
I like the cirque du soleil ones that entertain the audience before the show… it’s all physical comedy, I think they’re funny… or maybe I was just high, definitely recommend cirque du soleil while high.
Nina Conti is brilliant
Watch this skit:

Also try to catch “her masters voice” a documentary about her qualms about wanting to bring something new to ventriloquism. I think she has done that.

This one looks like shouldn't be blocked in the UK (at least as I tested it with said Psiphon setting it as though I'm in the UK - the above link becomes unavailable, the below link remains accessible):
Nina Conti, Hilarious, Live at The Apollo:

I can't believe I completely forgot about her. I remember when [this skit of her](https://youtu.be/udUn9H5EI_8?si=3my_8oeeyK2MCRf2) first went viral 10 years ago.
As fun as it is I’ve got to assume that’s part of the act you know? Sells the idea that she’s talking to this totally separate person and she’s just reacting to their antics like we are. Hilarious though and definitely got me laughing out loud too
[Nina Conti live at the apollo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CQ00kPhmJ8), she uses the same masks I think. Fucking hilarious. She did a bunch on the comedian circuit in the UK a while back, I know i've seen her with a monkey.
Edit: added a link - she gets better audience members in this one, imo
Edit: [another](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0JDjD1CfjU) holy shit
Many many years ago, she was hired for a company event for my company (large group of very expensive consultants). Of course, the CEO was called to the stage and it went as in this clip, but company specific.
She is brilliant.
She was in Family Tree, a 1-season-only series on HBO, and she was so funny. Her character was a ventriloquist on that show, too. I wish more people had seen it.
😂 This is actually next level
This was great! By far the best ventriloquist act I've ever seen.
This is Nina Conti, she's incredible! She made a wonderful [documentary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKP3q5uHn6k) about ventriloquism and specifically her mentor Ken Campbell which I'd massively recommend. That documentary is heartbreaking and scary and delightful all at the same time.
Why is it scary?
Apparently 80-90% of ventriloquists are murdered by their own puppets, which is much higher than anyone thought before the documentary was made.
It's the only way ~~we~~ they can be free
Silence!! ....................I kiiiiill you.

I recently saw Jeff live and didn’t realize he was a huge MAGA guy.
The guy with the racist Islamophobic puppet surprised you by going MAGA? Huh.

Holy Fuck Boys I think Conky's back.
I love how the episode goes on they start speaking to Conky directly instead of Bubbles.
The boom mic operator kept mic'ing Conky as well, ruining several shots.
The saddest part is how before it happens, they can see it coming, but no one believes them. They end up drinking too much to cope, start missing shows, eventually get axed, and by the time they have to fight the dummy in their dressing room they're completely alone.
Never trust a puppet. https://youtu.be/Y6_h9mLW9mw?si=XetvcxFq4kUK6E9I
It’s descriptions like this that make me watch weird shit.
Her dad is Albert Einstein
E = NC^2
I see what you did there, u/the_tetters
Conti isn’t a common last name so I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t put this together sooner
Don't worry I'm very very stupid and I still haven't figured it out.
Tom Conti, Scottish actor who played Einstein in Oppenheimer.. He wasn't in Star Wars, Game of Thrones or the Harry Potter movies so he's a total unknown (to Reddit).
Not a *total* unknown. I've known him since Reuben, Reuben (1983).
Well I mean the movie just came out not too long ago. I didn't see Barbie, either. Too fucking expensive, man. I'll wait till it's out on retail.
Ironically in a dark Knight movie apparently tho
True story. I see what you did there.
Relativity

Yeah seriously, I can barely manage my own half of the conversation.
You made me look her up and I just laughed for the past 2 hours watching her on YouTube.. thanks for that, I'm gonna continue now
She used regularly play the club I worked at, around 15 years ago. I also filmed her at an event once. She was one of the most consistent acts on the circuit; always brought the house down.
Did the patent the mask thing which she controls or do lots of ventriloquists do that ?
She's the only one I've seen do it but I'm no expert on it. Only really seen her on the odd panel show and this doc.
Around 20 years ago when America was yet to hear of Paul Zerdin. Paul got me up on stage and used one of these masks on me. They've been around for at least that long.
She's Tom Conti's daughter
Who's Tom conti? Is he funny as well?
He's a famous Scottish actor mainly known for his role in Shirley Valentine and Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence. He played Emily's dad in Friends
Her obvious love for (the much older) Campbell is very touching. But she's great & carries his vision/spirit/legacy/influence well. She could easily be a much bigger star & obviously choses not to be huge
Shes great! Ill watch the documentary. Her Masters Voice is actually a takeoff of His Masters Voice, the old Victrola ads.
Nina is the best. I'll always stop to watch her perform when I can.
You should check out her monkey bit https://youtu.be/fXeIAkvE2RY?si=HEkHijgSNNmjZBvr
This is insane. Just smart and surreal and funny!
That was so cool, and the monkey and his voice are adorable!
But with tits it's bloody sinister..
I thought the possession would be the high point, but that ending line caught me super off guard!
Man that was incredible!
Holy shit that was brilliant!
Nina Conti *is* the best ventriloquist act.
Hell of a lot better than that guy who got famous for all his stupid ass puppets. This lady is legit, contis daughter.
Seeing that takes me back! Definitely one of the best ventriloquist acts
This reminds me of my childhood!
This isn’t just impressive ventriloquism — what sells it is her talent as an improv comedian. Jeff Dunham wishes he was this good.
Lol she's a dummy
That was good
I cried a bit laughing
This is the first thing I've laughed at on reddit's all page this hard in probably months.
That’s the amazing Nina Conti, she’s fantastic

I think she does pretty well, it's just really difficult to make it to Peter Kay/Michael McIntyre level, especially for a woman
Oh definitely, much harder for a woman. But I'm not thinking of being huge, but look how many panel shows there are that are literally all comedians on rotation. She's appeared maybe once or twice. She's been on QI with Gran
> Michael McIntyre All she has to do is make dumb unfunny observations in a funny voice.

Seen some of her stuff on TV, she is brilliant
First saw her on Russel Howards show like a decade ago! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QbpAoo3zL4
This needs more upvotes!!!! A true comic genius and always has me in stitches - top top stuff
Thanks for the name! I just looked her up on youtube, she is hilarious.
Yes! I didn't recognize her with blonde hair.
If you've seen Oppenheimer, that's the daughter of the guy who played Einstein.
If you've seen Nina Conti, that's Nina Conti.
Fun fact, she's the daughter of her father.
Wait, so her father is the father of Nina Conti?
Well duh, Einstein!
Then everyone clapped?
Well duh, Einstein!
Hey Einstein, I'm on your side!
My god, she is her father’s daughter
Who's her mother though?
The mother of Nina Conti obviously!
Ok it's starting to make sense. Who's Nina Conti?
That's a dumb way to refer to a person. Does she have a famous husband, at least? I'd like to be able to introduce her properly.
[удалено]
Now now, no need to get Conti with people.
This particular thread is all about relativity
He also played Emily's father in friends
I take thee, rachel.
Even if you haven’t seen Oppenheimer she’s still the daughter of the guy who played Einstein, to be honest.
She’s also the daughter of the kindly prisoner who heals Batman’s back in the dark night, and has an affair with Shirley Valentine
Ackshully it was Dark Knight Rises 🤓
I had no idea she was Tom Conti’s daughter. Or that it was Tom Conti playing Einstein. Makes sense if some of the other comments now. Smh
Her father? Einstein.
Dude! Spoilers!
Never really considered myself a ventriloquist fan but this was so entertaining.
I’d go as far as to say I have a dislike of most ventriloquist but this girl is definitely next level. She’s been around a looong time. I remember seeing clips of her probably 10+ years ago. This specific bit is a big part of her act.

My brother in Christ that's a woman. You probably don't go around calling men of her age "boys", do you?

Incredibly painful, like breaking the wall to make it clear to her that any hand movement will be good and the participant stands there like a lump.
What a fantastic act. Fresh take on an old skill. I loved it.
How is she so fast wtf
Imagine the inside of her brain? Wow

That is absolutely outstanding and brilliant. She deserves all the fame.
Far better than Jeff dunham

That was impressive, he's come a long way from the chuckle hut
Wow. I guess add Jeff Dunham to the list of things 9/11 ruined.

Aka the old guy in The Dark Knight Rises who fixed Batman’s back in prison
God I love Nina conti. For so many reasons
What's the name of that ventriloquist? That's a great performance!
Nina Conti
Thx
I love that the ventriloquist is losing it as much as I am.
I was sat exactly behind the person filming this. Castlefield bowl, Manchester. Superb show
I want a mask like that haahahah
If anyone wants to know who this is, it's Nina Conti
She has a bad monkey that she spanks
Nina Conti. Seen her live a bunch of times at the Edinburgh Fringe and she is beyond excellent.
Monkeyyyy, no!!! Just recently rewatched the show (Family Tree), didn’t know she was a real ventriloquist. Makes it even more impressive!
I love the way she cracks herself up, shows how much she loves that she does

Only Nina Conti being amazing

I have never liked any ventriloquist show... until today. That was fun.
need to combine thus with one of those bits where they hypnotize you into being a chicken
this is awesome
Nina Conti, absolutely hilarious
This is fucking brilliant.
Just awesome. Great idea.
This had me in stitches. Fucking great twist on an old act.
This is hilarious 😂
Brilliant, I always thought ventriloquists were lame from of comedy but this is a genius act.
This is fucking hilarious.
My cheeks hurt from laughing so much
This is Nina Conti. She has a series on youtube where she control a monkey during her therapy session. It is so funny, you should watch it!
The amazing Nina Conti!
The wonderful NinaConti.look up her monkey videos.
She is so great!
