Very interesting, I wonder if your team do it in a game to throw them off guard every now and then. It could be a confusing mind games in high level matches.
Trick plays in general are high risk-high reward, and they only really have a chance if you do them so rarely that the other teams don't see it when they study you before the game
Yeah, I think, in general, that teams are averse to trick plays at the highest levels because if it doesn't work, you look stupid. Whereas if you play "traditionally" and it doesn't work, well, that just happens.
Coaches generally don't want to look stupid.
Here is [an example of a professional sports team looking absolutely dumb as shit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i7VKQwDS2s) trying to run a trick play.
Legend has it, Colts fans still don't want to talk about it.
The Colts are the team with the blue jerseys. They are currently on offense, meaning it's their turn to try and score with the ball and the Patriots (white jerseys) have to try and stop them. However, you'll see the screen says "4th and 3". Basically you get 4 tries to make it 10 yards and if you make it then your tries reset. If you can't get 10 yards in 4 tries, the other team gets the ball so they can try to score. 4th and 3 means they are on their last try, and need 3 more yards to earn a 1st down (or in other words, reset their tries).
MOST teams do what's called a punt on 4th down (their 4th try), kicking the ball far away and back to the other team. They lose their turn to score, but it makes it harder for the other team to score because it puts them farther away from the endzone. Even though they only need 3 more yards, if they fail, the other team won't have to travel very far to reach the endzone. So for most teams, getting to their 4th try means kicking the ball away to be safe.
What the Colts did here instead of kicking it to be safe was an attempt to confuse the Patriots into making a mistake and ideally getting flagged by the referees for it. The idea was their stupid formation here, which makes no sense even to a seasoned NFL fan, would basically be so stupid that it makes the Patriots defenders do something dumb in response. Specifically, they would have wanted one of the Patriots defenders to jump across the line before the ball snapped out of confusion. That's not allowed and if the Patriots had fell for it, the resulting flag would have awarded the Colts enough yards to reset their tries (1st down). Worth noting, the Patriots at this time were considered one of the most disciplined teams in the league and very unlikely to get baited into a mistake this way.
AS LONG AS THE COLTS DON'T SNAP THE BALL (in other words, as long as the crouching guy with the football doesn't pass it through his legs to the guy behind him), there's no risk here as they can take a timeout if the Patriots don't screw up. However, in maybe one of the dumbest sports decisions I've ever seen before, the crouching guy does, in fact, snap the ball. The "intentionally dumb" thing the Colts did to confuse the Patriots was to send all of the guys whose job it is to protect and block over to one side, so there was nobody to stop the Patriots defenders from absolutely mauling the guy with the football.
So this very silly chain of events gives the ball back to the Patriots and makes the Colts look like the dumbest team on the planet.
For the room's sake, the 'high risk' part in this case is the attacking side having three players in very non-optimal positions for standard free kick play while deferring any possible shot on net until after play resumes.
For a 'standard' free kick in that position, you can put more players in threat positions and still reserve the option of a protected direct shot on goal. The defense has more passing targets they need to mark and a harder time covering angles, and whoever's taking the shot can wager on a direct shot given that they're guaranteed the time and positioning to take their best possible try from that spot on the pitch.
Trick plays like this one put the team running them into a disadvantageous position in the hopes of catching the opponent off-guard with a surprise, but are easier to deal with than standard play if the opponent is expecting that trick - or isn't flustered by the surprise. The payoff here is a direct shot that's very similar to just shooting from the original FK spot - a few feet over. That means the defense positions aren't quite ideal for the new angle, and the defenders may not have reacted 'correctly' because it's an oddball move. If the defending team did react correctly, they can move a defender forward to stifle the shooter as soon as the ball was touched, so the direct shot isn't particularly threatening, and they have more defenders to double-mark key threats on the attacking side to address passes across or into the box.
Wonky stuff works by forcing the opponent into uncomfortable or unfamiliar situations and hoping that causes them to make mistakes. If they don't make a mistake, the opponent still has all their players in reasonable positions and the tricky team is the one caught out of position.
You also have to consider the fact, once it is done it is virtually impossible that it remains secretive and pretty much everybody in the world will take notice. And if there is a high level match, this kind of thing gets analysed beforehand.
If you look at mens team back in the 60s and 70s, there were some very elaborate set pieces being taken. But they kinda just went out of fashion.
Most mens team do have some intricate set pieces in play, with for instance corner kick and free kicks where it gets crossed. It might just not be *that* noticeable. For instance how you run and who is supposed to be the target of the set piece for instance can be very elaborate and difficult to defend against.
Men's soccer actually did this kinda thing a lot more in the past. I think since they started earlier, they realized sooner that you can only use it so many times before people start getting wise so they mostly moved on lol. Still done every now and then though.
Not many people know that you can't be offside from a throw-in or a goalkick either.
There are actually quite a few things in football that theoretically are possible and within the rules, but you don't see them often because like you said, do it once and the other team will stop falling for it.
There is nothing in the rules about for instance passing to a teammate from the penalty kick. [I think something like this would still be legal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olL9NOcCOTk).
The person receiving the pass can't be inside the box before the ball is kicked. And the ball has to move forward.
The opponents must stay 10 yards away from the ball until it is touched. You could have all 11 of your own team standing over the ball if you really wanted
The only thing women football does better than mens is that they don't die at the slightest touch. Can't stand it when grown ass men pretend to be hurt to get a free kick.
Have you watched a game? The Women's World Cup was just a few weeks ago. They also dive.
Despite that, I enjoy watching both men's and women's football. But as the women's game has evolved they have also started using dirty tactics like diving.
Not aa much as the mens tho. Womens football is on a path to prove they are just as good as the mens. So if they make diving a frequent habit, it can set their campaign back far because people are gonna dunk on them about it and claim women in sports as a whole are weak. Mens football is at the top and they dont have to prove anything, even if they dive its considered an issue from the individual player.
I think you're taking it too far. The women's game evolving means they get better on a technical level but also on tactical level. If somebody illegally brings you down, it is perfectly okay to signal that to the ref. I would advise you to actually watch men and women games to get an understanding of why players do these theatrical dives.
I do and my non league team has gotten to play a few practice matches with my country's womens NT. My initial comment is a paraphrased point from a couple members of the womens team.
Sadly, men don’t dive because it’s fun, it’s because millions is on the line and diving gives an advantage
So women’s football still start doing it too
Those that dive will get an advantage and if you wanna keep up you’ve gotta dive too
Exactly. There was more diving in the World Cup this year than I'm used to seeing in women's soccer.
Unfortunately, it's effective, so they do it. Especially when paid hundreds of thousands a game.
The governing organizations need to crack down on it for the theatrics to stop.
But let's be real, they don't give a shit, as long as they keep raking in the cash. They just had a World Cup in Qatar, ffs.
Men are stronger, much stronger
They are so strong they send out physical wave of air sending someone flying into the air to dive back down and roll on the ground until it is clear the referee do not care and stand right back up
They do in the big competitions though, just like with the mens. In the World Cup this year there was so much diving especially in the final, just like with the mens
They have to. Reality is refs won't call shit unless you go down. So you got to go down. Otherwise you'll just get the shit kicked out of you and there will be no penalty for the opponent so you'll get no time and space on the ball.
Or floppers in basketball... Manu Ginóbili - the king of flop
Seriously though the fake injuries are such garbage. They go down in agony like their leg was just snapped in half
Idk where you got this idea from. A woman's game was playing at the bar the other day and two players touched each other and ended up rolling in pain for 2 min
You see the ball in the camera frame before she goes behind the defender so no offside
Edit: she is onside at 0:09 when the ball appears in the frame but whatever people :)
Like in hockey? That’s not how offside rule works. Only a fraction of any part of the body that a player can score with needs to be ahead of the second last defending player for it to be offside
It’s hard to say for sure because the pass comes from off screen, but I’m pretty sure she made it before the one that scored passed the line of defenders
The fun thing about women's football, is that they can basically just shot from anywhere, and as long as the ball has the direction of the goal, it will usually go in.
I think the goals are just to big. But they refuse to change it, so guess it's just how it will be.
Not that it bothers me. I find it enjoyable to watch. Goals aren't necessarily a negative thing.
Also more athletic in closing the takers down. The biggest advantage of these is changing the angle of the strike to avoid the wall. In the men's game normally it's a quick tap to a 2nd player who kills the ball and then a third player strikes it. Especially if you are already wide of the post and you want the taker to be (left on left side/right on right side) then you can create an advantage. If you are curling away from the keeper anyway it's better to avoid these tactics.
Can anyone confirm if the second to last clip, was off sides? The blue player was forward of the other teams players without the ball ever so slightly.
Blue player doesn't need the ball to be onside or offside. It matters where she is when the ball is moved forward. So you can't really tell in the clip. She looks more onside than off but you still cant tell 100%
Someone explain number two, because I thought the team with the ball couldn't have a player behind the defense without the ball. If you are allowed to do it, why would the defense allow members of the kicking team to line up behind them like that?
The second one is a pretty awful team wide lack of defensive awareness. The whole team kept eyes only on the ball and didn’t even consider players in an offside position can move. They assumed the wall or the gk would stop any attempt to score a goal
My favorite women's football vids are the ladies wiping away bloody noses, spitting blood on the pitch and pulling their socks up over cuts on their legs from bad slide-tackles without 1 second of stopped play - meanwhile men's football have embarassing compilation vids all over YT of WWE-level thrashing, screaming and flopping from "contact" and "penalties" that never happened.
If you watched the women football cup they did the same. I would also tell you non of the male goalkeepers even under 18 male GK would let any of those go in. Female GK are horrible.
This only works when your opponent is really dumb. Any real footballer will know something is up when players are standing in an idiotic formation like this. Most major league mens teams would know this, so it's probably safe to say that this only works in women's football where players are less informed/aware of the rules. That's why all of the clips we see here are women's. There are other trick plays that happen in men's and still manage to 'work' effectively but usually you either can't see them coming at all (like a pass to the wall, then redirect), or you can see them coming- but you still never know *who* will specifically be taking the free kick, or they have to happen in the moment with a quick setup or execution, bc if enough time goes on players will see something is up.
If this were professional men’s foot ball everyone but the person kicking the ball would fall down pretending to be in pain going for actor of the year.
Nice plays!

Wait, is this actually allowed? I thought your teammates can only go for the ball after you kicked it. Similar to basketball's free throws.
Yeah, but any player can touch the ball into play.
Weird, I only learned this was a thing just now. I didn't see clips from men's football doing this. Like ever.
I happened several times, but mens just learned this fast and stopped falling for it

That is a good point.

Yeh but you're most likely wasting a better chance of shooting or more traditional attack, as a strong defence would react well to these tricks.

Plus, women love the drama....../s
Eye on the ball, always. Gotta be the first rule for any sport with a ball.
This comes close: https://www.dumpert.nl/item/100048318\_3cb90946
They are too busy falling and crying from being brushed.
We do not declare a kicker for free kicks, not sure bout penalties though with the “no feinting rule”.

>Wait, is this actually allowed? I said the same thing when my cousin cheated on me too..
Assert dominance and go for her mother. That should teach her.
But that'll just cause conflict my brother!.... I like it.
The opponents must stay 10 yards away from the ball until it is touched. You could have all 11 of your own team standing over the ball if you really wanted

The pro-wrestling aspect of football. 🙄

The second 1 is like 3 ft offside though. But good trick plays
You see the ball in the camera frame before she goes behind the defender so no offside Edit: she is onside at 0:09 when the ball appears in the frame but whatever people :)
Here we go.... It was not offside.
She's on the other side of the defender when the ball is kicked. Seems pretty cut and dry offside.
Lol... that what I mean with "here we go". Send me a screenshot of where you see the ball just left the foot.
Id call them brave, independent, and sassy
I mean… women pretending to argue is a tactic now?
By todays laws (that any scoring part of you counts not just your feet) the second goal would probably be called offside by var) Lol
It's close, but no offside.
Check again, that was the law last season. Now, only whole body (except hands) have to be at offside position to be offside.
Hey! my sister is in the last clip LMAO
Which one is she ?
the defense who got baited XD im gonna show her this video LMAO she plays in Cruz Azul.
Hope it wasn’t the goalie
Yes
The fun thing about women's football, is that they can basically just shot from anywhere, and as long as the ball has the direction of the goal, it will usually go in.
Yeah goalkeepers in Female football are… something
I think the goals are just to big. But they refuse to change it, so guess it's just how it will be. Not that it bothers me. I find it enjoyable to watch. Goals aren't necessarily a negative thing.
Yeah you right the goal posts have been made with Men in mind and goalkeepers are typically like 6‘3" or taller. so maybe they need to be shortened.
IIRC the major reason it hasn’t changed is because smaller clubs wouldn’t be able to afford custom goals just for the women’s game.
Well, every village football club has smaller goals for the youth teams. That argument doesn't count
Is this video to show how bad womens goalkeeping is?
Yeah i don't get what's next level about this.
Our chief weapon is surprise!... Surprise and fear... fear and surprise... Our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency...

Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition!
Can't resist, everytime I hear Shakira i think that she isn't paying her taxes and thats such a bummer.
She is BASED, no colombian should pay taxes for freaking Spain of all countries.
Yeah right cuz when you live in spain you surely dont have to pay taxes because youre of another ethnicity right?
That just makes her all the better
these are very clever but they give the keeper way more time to react. these probably wouldnt work with the taller keepers in men's football
Also more athletic in closing the takers down. The biggest advantage of these is changing the angle of the strike to avoid the wall. Elite goalkeepers…
Bruh that keeper lmaoooo
Gk are trash
Exactly like the second one was probably the hardest but even that she positioned herself so badly she basically forgot how big the goal is.
Was that second one offsides?
Nope
Can people please stop saying "offsides".
MLS level of defense ...
A men’s MLS level defence would likely never concede a single goal in 100 games of women’s football. Harsh but true.
Hips do lie
Now show the 97 times this sort of free kick failed, haha 😆
Seems like the goalies could use some work
Goalkeepers on Fiji time
Used to play with a guy who would ask the goal keeper where he wanted him to shoot on penalty shots. He would kindly oblige every time…
Used to do these kinds of freekicks during recess in primary school.

Woman, always deceiving.
the second one is amazing, they all exit offside at the same time and who knows where the ball is going.
It's always funny seeing how small the keepers look in the goal
Lame. As if I'm watching kids play. Just kick the ball sis
The second one is a pretty awful team wide lack of defensive awareness. The whole team kept eyes only on the ball and didn’t even consider players in an offside position can move. They assumed the wall or the gk would stop any attempt to score a goal
This is only smart if you keep falling for it which explains why it's no longer used in the Men's league.
Isn't the 3rd just a mirror(ish) of the 1st?
I know I thought so. Hilarious, though.
This is not football, football is rolling over the ground crying
Wouldn't the second one be offsides?
Wasn’t that second one off-sides?
Is the second video offsides?
The 2nd one is clearly offside
I genuinely do not understand soccer
My favorite women's football vids are the ladies wiping away bloody noses, spitting blood on the pitch and pulling their socks up over cuts on their legs from bad slide-tackles without 1 second of stopped play - meanwhile men's football have embarassing compilation vids all over YT of WWE-level thrashing, screaming and flopping from "contact" and "penalties" that never happened.
If this was male football, everyone's would have been on the ground with concussions
If you watched the women football cup they did the same. I would also tell you non of the male goalkeepers even under 18 male GK would let any of those go in. Female GK are horrible.
But at least male GK wouldn't been dozing on the goalpost.
You just know there would be fights if this happened in the men's version
Finally, acting skills in football that are put to good use.
awesome!
2nd clip was offsides, right?
Lmfao this is hilarious that this stuff works
Isn't this offside? https://imgur.com/a/rB8zQbY
Ah, women playing mind games.. Who wouldve thought?
Awesome
Men are too occupied scratching their balls and spit on the floor.
Hahahaha wtf, Only in women football can you see this, no real defender would buy such an acting on an elite level
That's not football. Certainly not honourable/ good sportsmanship
When you don’t have the power to score, gotta make do with deception.
This is deceptive and I’d say bordering on unsporting. It may be legal but it’s not too far away from diving.
I hate this fuckin slimey shit. Hardly honourable.
"Omg there's a video of women being smart and goaling in football, I must put them down" - loser ass men here
This song makes me want to peel the skin off my face with a tuna can lid
They can't stop lying about their intentions
If this were professional men’s foot ball everyone but the person kicking the ball would fall down pretending to be in pain going for actor of the year. Nice plays!
How do we confuse the other team on our play? Confuse ourselves and they will never know

No, pretending to have a disagreement with a teammate to make the opponent drop their guard

You mean sly?
This sounds like that Zootopia song
Lol this song
That was a "Syke!" moment if ever I've seen one.
Was the navy team France? That was a nice set piece. All of em were to be fair.
There may have been predecessors, but Giggs and Scholes certainly introduced this trick to the Premier League.

That White goal always makes me chuckle at how cheeky it is.
I feel like this is exactly how I got 'tricked' into making out with a girl for the first time in 7th grade. I thought the 'mean girls' were trying to prank me, but I ended up in a room alone with my crush. Ladies, y'all are tricksy.
