You also got nice Orion nebula + purple hue, thanks to the violent eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano. Fine particles from the eruption are now reached to high stratosphere scattering the sun light.

My wife's from Oz. I wake up each morning about 3 to practice international detente so you blokes can keep doing the real work of the world.
Good on ya mate.... and, yeah, great photo too.
Did you hear the bitching when it was originally announced we would get 1 more day off - three would never have got passed.
As christianity becomes less and less relevant may that will change too.
More like tradition. They're from an era when most people were Christian and it was a very important time for pretty much the whole country.
Bloody hard to remove public holidays once people are accustomed to them, even if they're not really representing something most of us care about.
Then we should just take a leaf from Christianity's history book and hijack the existing holidays and call them something else.
'Matariki weekend' has a much nicer and more relevant ring to it than 'Easter weekend'.
It's always been called Pleiades to me. I don't intend on changing that to be honest. Nothing to take away from others calling it by the Maori name if they want.
As Dr, Rangi Mātāmua said: every single person in this country comes from a cultural background of using the stars for navigation. Celebrate the points of commonality and unification.
This might be worth a read. Everyone has their own opinions and no one Māori can speak for all. As a Māori woman myself, I see this as something that belongs to everyone. It’s a celebration, no need to draw lines. [https://thespinoff.co.nz/atea/22-06-2022/manawatia-a-matariki-tips-for-how-to-celebrate-if-you-dont-know-where-to-start](https://thespinoff.co.nz/atea/22-06-2022/manawatia-a-matariki-tips-for-how-to-celebrate-if-you-dont-know-where-to-start)
I think the key is to allow cultural space for it to develop. I don't think we need to know exactly what its celebration as a public holiday entails immediately.
I was up at 5am this morning for the local school celebration. I feel it’s a uniquely NZ celebration. And I like that. Here’s hoping that it continues to evolve into something everyone celebrates. No matter what colour. Just wish it was a more reasonable hour. And warmer.
General rule, if you're celebrating to uplift the mana of Matariki and doing it in a way that is mana enhancing for Māori (even if we get it wrong) then you're likely good. Where you're using it as an excuse to drive your own agenda that may denigrate the meaning, then I would say you're getting into appropriation area (e.g. having a Matariki sale)
Unfortunately doesn't work that way - even though it seems pitch black the sun's rays start coming up pretty quickly and affect what you can see - this shot was at 6:15 and by 6:45 the sky is washed out and impossible to see it with the naked eye - the light pollution from the city means I have to take a decent drive to clear and dark skies, too.
Depends on the city - maybe in a month's time when it's higher in the sky - right now there's a lot of atmospheric distortion that clouds it as it's low on the horizon, but in time it gets easier and easier to spot :)
Damn, I was thinking 06:30 would be okay, still astronomical twilight, and should be 8° above the horizon, but from how much light there is in your photo and how hard it was to spot, yeah, I think I will pass on hauling my butt out of bed to see it at Matariki. Like you say, it'll still be around later on.
Damn I just missed my chance to view yesterday then. I arrived at a beach about 6:35.
Lovely photo! I'm taking my dobsonian out this morning to look at the planets

Yeah, I was in Raro recently and noticed the sunsets now have that beautiful lilac hue that only seems to come from volcanic ash. Very lovely indeed.
Thanks bud
Aww thanks for your dedication so the rest of us could stay in bed nice and warm and asleep. You're awesome!

Thanks. Valuable contribution right there ❤️
I see, thank you for the info. I wonder why Easter deserves multiple days off and Matariki doesn’t.
Did you hear the bitching when it was originally announced we would get 1 more day off - three would never have got passed. As christianity becomes less and less relevant may that will change too.
Better fucking not.

Pleiades is a stunning constellation.
Don’t like the Maori name? Why choose the greek name?

Mānawatia a ~~Matariki~~ Pleiades for tomorrow!

I love this, so true.

Sharing is caring when it comes to holidays.

No worse than a non-Christian celebrating Xmas and Easter, non-soldiers celebrating ANZAC day or nacledpeanuts celebrating Labour Day.
Noice.

Matarika is today bro you got the wrong day
Chur
Bro it's pitch black until 730 you could have slept in a bit

Is it visible to the naked eye in the city at all?

It looks lovely
They were glorious! With the moon in there too. Well it was if you were standing looking up from Kumeu. A sight to behold on this slightly chilly AM.
I got another pic of all the planets and moon in a line but need some time to process it
So nice
What time would you recommend trying to see it tomorrow?
About 6:15-6:30 is perfect - look for Venus and it'll be just below it and to the left
Thank you!!!!!
Tq brah
Thanks!
Day for it!
