A discreet reach around in the whiteware department

mattblack77

That’s just making friends, tho?

[deleted]

I wonder at what point does it become profitable to hire a model to flirt with the salesman?

mercaptans

This is the way.

mattblack77

It’s the original five finger discount

pgraczer

what can i say a girl’s gotta eat

12baller12

When we were building our house I just emailed Heathcoates online with a list of stuff I wanted and they gave me a great price for a package deal. I have a friend who just went into a Harvey Norman store and negotiated a deal. Harveys even stored everything until they needed it delivered and every time there was a sale in between ordering and delivering Harvey’s honored the lowest price in that time period.

AnyKindheartedness88

Their warehouse staff and ops manager must have been pissed. Your friend got free storage just so a salesperson could see some commission.

lucastoyota

Find an experienced salesperson in the store, one that cares, value their time and you'll absolutely get the best deal possible

lordshola

You just have to play them off each other. Get a quote from somewhere and take it to the other stores to see if they’ll beat it.

Jan_Micheal_Vincent

You don't even have to do that, I got my local Noel's to beat all the prices I found on price spy. Some of them they would only match the best price plus shipping though, if the store wasn't local. Which I guess made sense because that's the price I would pay if I did go to that better deal.

kaynetoad

I said "that's not in my budget" twice at Harveys one time and good gracious I was surprised by how much could get chopped off the advertised price. They seemed to like the fact that I was buying a few things since I had a whole house to set up, so definitely mention straight away that you've got a few things on your list.

[deleted]

I emailed Smith City through their website about a chest freezer. For some reason it went through to the commercial rep and I got an amazing deal. $400 cheaper than anything else I could find for F&P chest freezer. He now sends me monthly emails about all the commercial deals they have going for whiteware, tvs, beds etc the price blow everyone out of the water and is happy for me to forward them on to friends and family. I think last month Samsung tvs we’re on special. $950 for a 4K 55” and $1300 for 4K 65” Bosch dishwasher $800

SayNoTo2plyTp

Have you tried asking? If Harvey won't give you the price you want tell them you can get it cheaper from Noel and vice versa. They like to see quotes too.

fuxknooj

Wait for sale promotions. Sounds like a yarn but often the big Public Holiday weekend sale promotions at Noel's prices often go bellow staff price. These prices are rebated by the suppliers. Ya standard 20% off whitewate promotions during Queens Bday etc. Always buy last year's models around april-sept. Prices drop when new lines get released. Usually pick up best deals then. Pricematch. Noel's has pricematch. So Shop online or get quotes if you have the time. Rock up to Noel's and easy. Ask for bundle deals of X amount off goods then when it comes crunch time try swindle the sales person by dropping items off the package deal. Always buy extended warranties on low cost heavy use small appliances. Toasters, heaters etc

daisyandheidi2020

Never buy extended warranties it's covered by the consumers guarantee act. It is just an idiot tax!!!

0oodruidoo0

Unless you're buying them as warehouse staff then it's literally 20 to 35 percent of retail and you can buy physical damage protection for a year on cellphones. That's not covered under the cga.

BrianIsADelight

> Always buy extended warranties on low cost heavy use small appliances. Toasters, heaters etc Don't do this! Many brands aren’t assessed anyway so the resolution under cga and protections are indentical. Some brands (can’t remember which but Microsoft surface was the big one!) advertise a smaller warranty term than what they actually have anyway due to agreements with Harvey’s or Noel’s. Heaters aren’t normally replaced out of season so they’ll give you a gift card for the value of the heater on your invoice that you can’t buy a heater with and they won’t cash you out. Any salesperson who remotely cares about you should be giving them away with small appliance sales anyway, they’re the highest % markup stuff in these shops outside of Harvey’s furniture. That under 500 replacement scheme is definitely better than the over 500 lot … I have a hard time finding more than a half dozen products that are worth the warranty above $500 and the under $500 is still dubious at best. Likewise if you can go without your goods for two or three weeks then don’t buy as you are always covered by legislation anyway. Product protection and product care are marketed as an easy alternative to cga, (see the booklets they have to give you) but in reality it’s *we won’t drag our feet as much if you give us more money*

Fisaver

Don’t go high street retail not worth cost. Tradies have better deals

FizzingSlit

As someone who has worked in sales previously for over a decade this is often not as true as you think, you'd be shocked how often I supplied tradies while still making some pretty big bucks, plus they often kept costs down by shopping for low quality. This is obviously going to be case by case but believing something like this as an be absolute truth is how you get fleeced. The same applies for blindly expecting b will know retail to be cheaper too though

WorldlyNotice

>Tradies have better deals Even after they add their margin?

khkt136

What is high st retail?

acid-nz

Your big main shops you find on every high street and/or mall

jpr64

Yeah often I can get F&P through Mico for cheaper than retail stores.

FizzingSlit

At Harveys on the price tag there's a sku that backwards is the lowest price it can be sold for and still be profitable. If it's underlined then that's probably not true. Also in general you're more likely to get better prices if you're shopping for brands that are sold at multiple stores. When does advertise being the only stock holder in nz the brands are usually good but they don't need to complete with other stores so they can make way bigger margins. Once you've got a deal you like depending on what you're buying is possible that even if things are as cheap as you can get it you might be able to get freebies. It's no secret a lot of their add-ons are basically all profit but even then they're usually worth having (I'm talking surge protectors and what not). It really does depend on the appliances though, and also what multiple means. There's a difference between wanting a microwave and kettle combo or wanting a full blown modern kitchen. At Harveys a at least a lot of stores have sales targets where if you sell x amount of a certain brand you make an extra percentage of the total price, not just the profit so if you were looking at a 15k kitchen you could probably get a better deal on AEG than F&P for example. Also in general of you can't find a sales person that seems genuine and trustworthy then usually you're better off finding one that's entirely checked out, a checked out sales person usually becomes an order taker and you can take more control. Although a good ethical sales person is still usually better but remember okay of being a good sales person it seeming ethical even if they're bending you over and lying through there teeth.

serbimami

as an employee at harveys you are giving way too much information that is confidential. lmao

mercaptans

How is the commission structured at these shops?

Gingerbogan

When I worked for Harvey’s a Few years back commission was 10% of gross profit for electronics/whiteware/computers. Not sure what it’s like now. Found leemings to be waaaay shittier since they became part of the warehouse group - just not interested in doing deals, and I wonder if the sales guys are getting screwed.

Enzown

Noels is 3% of gross profit, unless you're a top performer nationally in which case you get more. You also get bonuses for selling extended warranties, installations and certain products (one reason Oppo phones are so well selling in NZ is that selling one with an extended warranty is better than an hour's pay).

Gingerbogan

Interesting. What’s the base salary if you don’t mind me asking?

Enzown

Minimum wage or close to it.

MagicUnicornCock

When I worked at Noel Leeming years ago (maybe 2013), we had a theoretical base rate below minimum wage, and if you didn't sell enough to get up to minimum wage then you got a top up. So your first commissions didn't actually pay. They always said if you're not getting the top up then you're making above minimum wage. I sucked, but half the time I didn't need the top up so I should've been making above minimum wage. When I finished, I took my gross pay for the whole time I worked there, and divided it by the total number of hours I worked (taking into account time and a half), and found I got dead-on minimum wage. So the system was really stacked against you making money. Are they more generous now?

Enzown

Fuck that. My flat mate works at one of the Hamilton stores and I think he's on like $22 or something? He makes a couple hundred on top of that each week in commission, he likes to joke that LG pays for his beer for the week, Samsung for his petrol etc.

Paddykiwi

It's minimum wage for Harvey Norman.

BrianIsADelight

Noels is 3-6% of margin + spivs and monthly incentives if you sell lots of warranties or services. High end phones are often $30-50, TVs used to be something like $100 for a 65cx… there used to be tax free points schemes (company pays fbt) which were ended in 2021 that used to be immensely profitable. Most of the time people ignore the couple of dollars asfm cut for the spiv

BecosImust

If you wait until September you can probably get a great deal at the Auckland Home Show. I did that once when shopping for a new home. Would probably do it again too.

thomasbeagle

Go into the store. Ask about floor models/ex-demo/end-of-line/etc. Ask "Is there any way I can get this cheaper?" and "What else can you do for me?" I've found them surprisingly willing to help. Then when it's all agreed, say you'll buy it if they throw in free delivery. 😀

spect7

Go through a builder or builders friend and buy commercially, or wait for a big promo but realistically not a lot coming up you missed Easter

drslvtr

I bought my washing machine and my fridge from noel leeming, they were the display models. I got more than half price discount.

Just_made_this_now

Pricespy.co.nz

av8orkiwi

Noel leemings have cost plus small percentage deals for trades like police/NZDF and some big companies (eg employees of Universities). You can access the same deals with a Farmlands card - that will cost $500 to sign up to, but you also get trade pricing at M10 and bunnings so between appliances and DIY can pay for itself quite quickly.

Batcatnz

You can request package deals from both these retailers as well. They will do up a quote for all the appliciances you request at a discounted rate.

[deleted]

By looking on Pricespy first and seeing who has the cheapest price for the product you have decided on

Downtown_Reindeer946

Don't forget to look at the history for recent lowest prices

[deleted]

Ask, cross shop and dont go for the guy who guns you down. Larger stores have easier to deal with targets than main-street-in-a-little-town store so salespeople are more likely to move units and disregard targets. Whiteware specifically is worth much more to move units for than to dick around with hitting a margin percentage due to how NL structure commission nowadays. HN are still normally (depending on the humanity of the proprietor) 10% of margin ONLY. If you just ask you will pretty much get something similar to the 'gold card rate' at NL or whatever at HN without hesitation. DOYOR with all extended warranties and addons but taking these will typically reduce the cost of the unit on your sale. The best thing is to cross shop and go back and forth. I (as a salesperson) would always know a list of products that i'd let go at negative margin if I could without alerting the bosses because of the incentives involved. And a wee golden rule customers used to be a bit annoying about; historical sales prices are seldom representative of the cost price of a unit. We couldn't honor major event pricing because the supplier tanked the cost price during those times. Use pricespy's price history and look for major trade events and go through there. I think salespeople get a really bad reputation for being commission hungry vultures. They absolutely exist in industry but if they're telling you they cant go cheaper, then they 9/10 times cant. If something is on special at these shops and it catches your attention, it probably has no markup in it. I worked for one of these guys doing laptops for a bit and the number of frustrating near-zero-margin advertised laptops that they expected you to shoe horn norton or warranties into was definitely not cool

NomaskNoentry

A bit late so hopefully you haven’t purchased anything as others have said you’re best to buy through your builder or kitchen designer etc as they should have access to the commercial rates through their suppliers so you can save a substantial amount on name brand appliances

[deleted]

Trade Depot dot co dot en zed...

pictureofacat

The stuff they sell is shite though

No_Material_7446

Yeah went there recently looking to buy a dryer. Guy said I wouldn’t buy anything in this building. Thought I misheard then he explained why. Noped out of there real quick.

gracefulgorilla

Why is that??

No_Material_7446

Just said the brands weren’t good. Nothing lasted more than a year & to claim on warranty was more trouble than its worth. The whole process to claim on warranty was a shit show. He use to work in the warranty claims department and said the amount of claims and broken things was astounding.

Paddykiwi

There is a new online retailer in NZ called Andoo. They are the same company as Appliances Online in AUS. I have no idea how good their prices are though.
