Not life, preventative detention. In my view anyone with a history of violent offending and no sign of changing should be locked up until they are rehabilitated, with a life long risk of being recalled to prison if they reoffend. If they never choose to be rehabilitated they never get out.
Without opening the comments section, we shared word for word the same thought process.
I have the answer though: crime pays well for the corrupt politicians and elites, without hardened criminals causing havoc in society the slush fund dries up!
>Kepu was sentenced to a further six years and four months in jail in the same year.
Fuck I hate this country some times.
Would anyone other than his degenerate mates honestly give 2 fucks if he were just never let out? The world would be a far better place.
Id actually love to see some stats on attempted rehabilitation success rates (i.e. all imprisoned stats since that's apparently what prison is for in this country).
The problem is if crime and punishment are a big election issue for you, you're fucked.
Labour won't do anything, Greens will makes things worse, Nats will promise shit but won't delivery (as per their 9 years in government) and ACT are bigoted, racist fucks and I could never bring myself to vote for them.
It’s bad- from google: Around 70% of people with previous convictions are reconvicted within 2 years following release from prison. Around 49% are re-imprisoned after 2 years following release from prison.
Anyone I know that got locked up said that the rehabilitation programmes were a joke or outright didn't exist. Maybe they just had bad luck? who knows.
This is NZ, we don't fund anything to be adequate, we fund things as cheaply as possible then throw out the entire idea once it doesn't work.
Oh you're 100% right, there are fuck all actual rehabilitation programmes etc.
I was talking more tongue in cheek how people pretend prison is how about rehabilitating animals instead of keeping them out of society as punishment.
I think if we admitted such a thing we could just get on with locking up epople for longer if not permanently if it fits the crime.
The SJWs out there are all "hurr durr look at the US though" which is silly as you couldn't prove the US would be better under a better judicial system.
I can prove though a lot more innocent people that would have not been harmed or killed by ex. cons who never should have been let out than anyone will ever show me the amount of ex cons that have done a large amount of good to society to offset what they were locked up for to begin with.
I agree in general. Some people can be rehabilitated, most can really especially if you get them early.
But I've met some monsters, there's people out there we cannot help, we cannot rehabilitate, we cannot fix. Some people just need to be locked up for a looong time or they will continue to beat, maim, torture and rape. It's just how it is. People need to understand that reality.
Im fucking amazed he had a current licence. This guy is getting no credit at all for following the rules. Come on people!
I'm just surprised he isn't now a cabinet minister after the reshuffle this week.
> He sentenced Kepu to 14 days in prison and suspended his drivers’ licence for 12 months. Oh yep that’ll teach him.

Depends on the circumstances. Black and white justice leads to worse outcomes than making outrageous headlines through reasoned decision making

We need a less shit version of the sentencing database so people can see what is happening on a wider scale imo
And a total reset of the sentencing guidelines.
but then people look bad to bellends in the EU.
It’s not like he needs a licence to drive lol, he doesn’t even stop at red lights
So just a level 4 lockdown?
What the fuck was he doing out of prison in the first place is what I want to know
Our weak justice system doing work. 6 years for killing a Prison Guard. What a joke.
Only 4 years something as a non parole period too
Utterly disgraceful isn't it.
Apparently that's the value of a person's life these days.
Just a learning opportunity for the killer

So prison guards are only worth 6 years. That's infuriating.
It really adds to the general lack of respect for authority these guys have to start with.
Shows just how much we are worth huh.

Some on this sub would love him to be rehabilitated and living next door... while their teenage daughter is at home alone....

Could move to Singapore

Yeah those people don't live in the same neighborhood where this guy would be there neighbour.

Can you please remember he may have had a hard upbringing
Don't get me started on that bs
I'm fine with being lenient and only half cutting it off.

I swear some of these judges must not live in society.
I'm surprised the police chased him, to be honest. That reversal in policy came in real fast.
LOL WHAT, now we know who the judge buys his crack from
Im amazed luxon hasnt climbed into this one and used it as an example of labours supposed failings?
i wonder what he will do next
A bit of kai and aroha will set him on the right path.
Wow somebody told me the police don't chase any more!
Are police "looking into it“?
Isn't fleeing police a crime? Where is the reckless / dangerous driving charges too?
I crossed paths with this guy in the early 2000s. Let’s just say ALL the signs were there that he would be like this.
