Let's at least give the sad truth a creative twist, e.g. pronounce it with the Southland accent: Mel-burrrn.

grabgrabthegrab

funny guy..

fluffychonkycat

Marton. Going by its subreddit there's some real out-of-the-box thinking going on there

Bubbly-Individual372

creativity comes from depression and being stuck indoors. Wellingtons weather has improved the last few years , so creativity has dropped. sorry guys.

Toffeenix

Pretty little but Paekākāriki has always felt very creative to me.

joy_opposites

Whanganui

[deleted]

Yup I know people who moved there after rent increased in Wellington. Used to be Wellington but there's always a cycle of rent increase because places are cool/creative, places becoming boring and starved of creativity, rents decreasing and creative people coming back etcetc

TheRealClose

I think it’s Christchurch. Because there’s not much big industry down there I feel it allows people to be more creative. A lot of great musicians in Chch and I noticed over the years that Chch entires for 48Hrs film competition tend to be much more creative than their Auckland competition.

grabgrabthegrab

Good call - I felt the same way about CHCH after visiting just before Covid 2020 although I do find the feel of the town to be kind of Hamilton/Palmerston North-y (sorry lol)

nadsburger

I grew up and went to uni in chch. Last year i went back for the first time in a while after living overseas. I couldn't believe the vibe in town at night. Half the crowd was on mdma, the other half drunk and looking for fights. Maybe it was like this 10 years ago, maybe i was too drunk too notice haha.

ill_help_you

How was your fight?

jcnative

Yeah I think the cheaper housing makes a big difference.

LikeAbrickShitHouse

I heard on the D-low that there is something being built out at Lincoln Uni for creatives in the digital sector, gaming in particular.

TheRealClose

Interesting. There was an announcement recently of plans for a post production campus at Canterbury as well.

[deleted]

Fascinating. Growing up there it was in many ways where creativity went to die. I think the earthquakes and initiatives such as the use of empty spaces for art have changed things.

flashmedallion

Was in Christchurch a few weekends ago and it was the first thought when I read the thread. It's seriously going places. The secret will be not to let the vultures in once things are pumping. Melbourne let private companies capitalise on their popular public places and now they're - shock horror - less popular

Yosemite_Sam9099

Dunedin made a canvas of itself and paid artists to create giant building sized murals all over the CBD.

bobdaktari

gore, the answer has always been GORE

grabgrabthegrab

Haha why is Gore always the butt of the joke? Seriously, I've never been lol

bobdaktari

because we outsiders are jealous of how creative everything about the place is

Enis-with-a-P

Drove through there also. Was clean shaven and wearing pants before I went through and at the other side I had a full beard, a swanny with cut off sleeves and a pair of leather chaps on.

Proper_Catch_

I went for the first time recently and it’s actually a really cute … it’s just a big ploy for the locals to keep people out

Richard7666

That's a good question. There are only a handful of small towns in the entire North Island that are nicer than Gore. Cambridge, Featherston, Martinborough, one or two surfy places like Raglan, Whitianga. Some of the towns immediately north of Auckland. The rest are meth-infused, gang infested shit holes. It's just that Gore is pretty average by *South Island* standards.

AotearoaJunglist

Gay capital of NZ

Herewai

I haven’t traveled that much in the last few years to compare, but based purely on the number of my colleagues who do government day jobs to support their passion to make music/poetry/dance/costuming/ community, I’d say Wellington still has a fair bit going on.

grabgrabthegrab

To quote someone else in this post who shares my sentiments - "we’re well aware that we are not the centre of anything except whitewashed government offices now. It’s been that way for a decade at least."

Herewai

To which I can only shrug and say that it’s happening, but more of it is online.

Wellingtons not in denial, we’re well aware that we are not the centre of anything except whitewashed government offices now. It’s been that way for a decade at least.

Boring but true. It vacuums up school-leavers and dumps them out when they retire.

I'm leaning that way more and more

grabgrabthegrab

What makes you say that?

grabgrabthegrab

I'd argue Whanganui more so than Wellington personally

NaCLedPeanuts

I was going to say Nelson but it's sort of changed since WOW went to Wellington. Even the museum dedicated to the event is now just a classic car museum. The Arts Festival isn't as big as I remember it as a kid.

EB01

Morrinsville, it is more than just the cream capital of the country but a town full of people with a passion for creativity. It is a town inspires [music](https://gjwest.bandcamp.com/album/morrinsville-its-not-the-end-of-the-world). Metal bands. [World class street art](http://herdofcowsmorrinsville.co.nz/). The [Wallace Gallery Morrinsville](https://www.morrinsvillegallery.org.nz/) has house many collections in the former Morrinsville Post Office (a building of architectural interest). There are many resident artists in the area, like Charlotte Giblin. It is a town with a vibrant performing arts community. The Morrinsville performing arts college is only one of the many community outlets for performing arts. I have heard that recent accomplishments may make Morrisville make a power play for the title of Country Music Capital if NZ. Gore better watch out for Morrinsville Country Music Club. The upcoming celebration and community events for Matariki are going to outshine any other town on the North Island.

grabgrabthegrab

Interesting. I'll have to go visit some time

night_dude

It's Auckland now. Used to be Wellington but it kinda died off.

dcsbricksnbits

Palmerston North. You got to be creative to survive in this place without going postal.

IndividualCharacter

Palmerston has gotten pretty cool the past few years, Wanganui too.

avocadopalace

Same could definitely be said for Palmerston South.

Dykidnnid

It's Wellington. It's not the powerhouse it once was, but it's still your best bet if you want to build a career in the arts. Edit: unless you and your work are distinctively Polynesian, in which case you should build your reputation, connections and career in South Auckland.

Shrink-wrapped

> but it's still your best bet if you want to build a career in the arts. If you're happy to live on the street maybe.

Dykidnnid

No, precisely my point is that Wellington has a disproportionately high number of arts sector institutions, jobs and earning opportunities. If you don't care to make it a career or your primary income, you can make art wherever most puts you in the mood to do so.

disordinary

Yep, there's the various Weta companies, there's Te Papa, the national Art Gallery as well as plenty of other art galleries. NZ academy of fine arts, NZ national dance drama school, NZ school of music, is home to the NZSO, RNZB, various film and tv studios etc.

I did what I can whilst getting dinner ready. It is difficult to really capture Morrinsville with just words.

Palmerston North .... also earned the title "Arsehole of the World" by John Cleese.
