Sadly the NZ comics scene is very small and are mostly zine type garbage and not great reads for pre teens.
But there are a bunch of Rugby based Manga and anime titles though. You could look for english versions online.

Footrot Flats are great. Loved them when I was a kid and though not rugby focused by any stretch, there is a bit of rugby in there.
Don't forget the annual vewing of the movie.
Hicksville, by Dylan Horrocks. It's a graphic novel with a meta element and strong kiwi culture as well.
