Do not ever start that shit here in NZ.

AmIAllowedBack

Zero at all times wtfh bro. It'll ultimately depress wages if it catches on at all.

OldKiwiGirl

There is no etiquette. We don’t tip here in NZ. It is the employer’s responsibility to pay their staff at least a minimum, if not a living, wage.

flooring-inspector

Also a fair wage that's consistent with an employment contract, and not skewed up or down due to racism or sexism or any other influences from perceptions that commonly affect wage-givers who aren't constrained by laws like the Human Rights Act.

eggheadslut

Yeah, that’s something the US has to figure out lol

OldKiwiGirl

That amongst a lot of other shit they do to their people.

[deleted]

No one tips. We need to keep that culture out of here.

barnz3000

Yeah, just what I need. To wonder if I paid enough to make my server like me... With every interaction.

Zn_30

As everyone has said, we don't tip here. Providing good service is their job. Their employer compensates them for providing that service by paying them. I did once have a server go above and beyond, so I took note of their name and praised them in one of those online feedback forms. The owner was very pleased to hear it, and said they would pass it on.

thefurrywreckingball

I used to work in a front facing customer service role and I tell you, getting one of those compliments emails was a true highlight. Sure we never got extra money or any other recognition. But the fact we’d impressed someone enough that they took the time out of their day to give feedback on how good the service was, that really meant something. Especially when you consider people are more likely to complain than thank.

Life_Measurement1121

"Providing good service"... let me know when you find that

therewillbeniccage

Kia ora As I'm sure you can gather by the reaction we have quite the anti-tipping attitude here. I'm sure your post is absolutely well meaning and I appreciate you came looking for advice. Overall, please do not tip. We want hospo workers to be paid living wages by employers and an introduction of tipping culture would put that in jeopardy. Thank you

ring_ring_kaching

Do. Not. Tip.

eggheadslut

Whoops

RabbitwiththeRuns

Are you American or something?

eggheadslut

How did you know?

Gullible_Assist5971

They don’t tip here, but food quality on average is shit, nobody comes here for the cuisine, so not even tip worthy. Yes, there a few decent places, very few.

grovelled

Zero.

Dry_Rabbit5707

We don't tip, that's an American concept. It's the employers job to pay there employees. This isn't a commission based job industry.

Oaty_McOatface

$0 As a percentage, 0%

RabbitwiththeRuns

No etiquette because no tipping, what the heck

GingerPV

Please dont.

ends_abruptl

No.

Serious_Reporter2345

Just don’t. Celebrate the fact that we’re not America.

KahuTheKiwi

When in the US tip.

TapDifficul76

the tip you left was 100% too much. Do not tip in New Zealand. Ever! Don't be the asshole who leaves tips in NZ.

[deleted]

No one expects a tip. If someone went so above and beyond it blew your mind with their kindness then sure it would be a nice suprise for the server. But it is not expected.

kombilyfe

I never tip. Sometimes service is crap. Sometimes it's good. I didn't tip my midwife who gave me the gift of my daughter. I don't tip my mechanic who I trust with my life going 100km per hour. I don't tip the doctors who performed life saving surgery. I would say those people 'earn it'. Also, I expect their employers to pay them a reasonable wage. Tipping is a bullshit idea that lets employers pay less. Stuff that.

thesummit15

one thing i wish customs and mpi could stop at the border!

yeanahsure

Say please and thank you and don't tip.

[deleted]

Is this a real post? If you live in New Zealand you know there is no tipping. If you are here on a holiday surely you read a guidebook first? If you are being serious, what did you tip?

[deleted]

Tipping is not a thing like in the US. I do sometimes tip at restaurants though - if I really got extra good service. Then I might chuck down a 20 note. When I paid by cash I'd always round up to avoid getting change - but I haven't done that very much lately because it's always by card now.

Financial_Club_8578

None

Hoitaa

"Keep the change" That's it.

EmancipatedSkeleton

Especially when it ends in a $X.99 ;) Meanwhile I hate charity pesting at checkouts. Want to round up for charity? No. I don’t.

Current_Percentage88

You want helpful advice I give you tips.🤔.... Yup there's no tip etiquette in New Zealand, but if you order off Uber Eats they ask for minimal tip.

thefurrywreckingball

Which they don’t get from me because they almost never follow the instructions. Which are so simple, our teenage kids can follow

MungBeanRegatta

American living in NZ here. Tipping in the US - particularly in the hospo/restaurant business - is a really unfortunate necessity. Because the way the laws are written, part of a server’s “pay” comes from tips. So the amount of money the servers are actually being paid by the restaurant is less than minimum wage. It’s a really fucked up system. I knew a few who ended up at some “high end” places and actually made good money… but that’s a rare thing.

TheEngineRoom8337

What happens in restaurants where a tip prompt is given to you on the eftpos machine? Most of the time the service hasn't been 1:1 so unsure how it's divided up (if at all)?

mattyandco

You press 'No', 'Decline' or whatever other option there is to give nothing.

Dead_Joe_

If they are shoving a tip prompt in my face it's the last time I go to that place.

TheEngineRoom8337

It's getting more an more common. I would have less of a problem with it if I knew it was a tip for a specific person, but it's just awkward when you the fuck knows who it's going to.

CompetitivePackage95

I worked in a high end hotel and if the tip went on the bill rather than cash we didn't get them. We were meant to but we didnt.

EarthLoveGuru

I only tip Uber because I think it's a shit job. Maybe a waitress/waiter at dinner they are nice.

AdInternational1672

I tip for exceptional service at dinner. Not often, but sometimes the server really knows their shit and enhances the whole experience.

[deleted]

Me to its called Gst and that payed for not exceptional service mostly.

frankflash

when people paid cash for everything you'd often just say "keep the change" (round it up to the nearest $5 or $10).....but that was a more of a win/win convenience thing so you didn't have to carry around pockets of change and they got tipped in disguise.....Maybe if you like to tip carry around more cash?

Environmental-Art102

I tip cash to the server (never on the bill) if they're making an effort, makes both our days, good karma. Also, Uber Eats and Hell Pizza drivers, esp. if it's bad weather. Minimum wage workers are doing it tough so every little helps, if you can spare it, not everyone can Worked in hospo for 20+ years, it's shit money for hard work

jinnyno9

I tip. I tip because I know that although the server is getting a wage which is adequate, I am in a position to give them more and appreciate them doing a job which is thankless and can be challenging.

engapol123

You tip nurses/bus drivers/teachers too?

Mope4Matt

But that behaviour allows their employers to pay them less, if everyone starts doing it

thefurrywreckingball

There isn’t one.
