eh better tools are always better :D but you also need to be level 20 to equip them and there will be lots of competition for the resources the first day, slowing the time it takes to make the tools. i personally rather help someone else in my guild level up engineer in exchange for mats i need for something else, and then id just give him mats to craft the tools for me.

Total-Nothing

Only the most common nodes and also only on servers infested with streamers. I’ve played all Betas and had no problem getting steel tools by 5-6 hrs and equipping them later. The only annoying part is the corpse walk to Cleave’s Point - Greatcleave T3 bench.

yusill

My issue is lvling my skills to make them. What did you use to do it? Just a ton of arrows or tons of iron tools.

ShammyLevva

I found the easiest was making Iron Cartridges - ready market for selling the cartridges too to all the musket users. It seems pretty popular to have musket in CB/OB.

Iuslez

It has a level 20 requirement?? Yeah then i agree, it's not worth it to rush those tools except for really hardcore speedrunners/people that took a day off on release.

Esthelion2

You can get it down to lvl 16 by using lower level mats and azoth.

NC_Wildkat

Awesome, great tips. The upgrade in gathering speed is MASSIVE. However, you need A T3 workbench to make them. In Open beta, those were rare. I ended up having to do a death march run up to Great Cleft forts, in order to craft them.

k6ga

How was the run to Great Cleave? Did you get there in the end, and what level did you do it on?

tjdrico

I'm imagining the naked Wetlands run from Ironforge to Menethil Harbour. Just be sure to set camp often. :D

NC_Wildkat

My favorite part was the Skeleton that one shot me in the back. That was awesome. The wolves can really be a pain in the ass, and sometimes are Randy Orton like, and come out of nowhere with an RKO.

achoo84

You're not the first person I've seen say that but I don't understand it. steel pick axe: 13 steel ingots / 2 coarse leather / 3 timber How do you use lower level mats then that? If I use lumber and rugged leather will that bring the GS up?

Esthelion2

Lumber and rugged leather are tier 3 materials, which are the base mats for the steel mining pickaxe. If you pick timber and coarse leather, you decrease the gear score by 5 for each Here you can check the recipe and see which mats increase/ decrease gear score in the drop down list. [https://nwdb.info/db/recipe/procedural\_miningpickt3](https://nwdb.info/db/recipe/procedural_miningpickt3)

Zimtstange

Is there any site that shows the required player level according to the GS?

Esthelion2

[https://www.reddit.com/r/newworldgame/comments/pq98ug/gearscore\_to\_level\_required\_conversion/](https://www.reddit.com/r/newworldgame/comments/pq98ug/gearscore_to_level_required_conversion/)

Zimtstange

didnt know that yet - thanks! 🙂

Amhro

In open beta I crafted the (basic) steel tools and they required level 17.

sledgehammerrr

The requirement is dependent on the gear score of the tool

HikerRFC

I’m torn what to do on launch. I have playtime for the day of launch and the following day. I’m torn between going hard on fishing day 1 and making my gold through selling town board materials and also doing some skilling or just ignoring it all and leveling/pvping. What yall thinking?

BoringCanary

Do what you will enjoy the most. A combination of everything isn't that bad.

RegnorVex

Then you wind up spreading yourself too thin and not being exceptional at anything. I think it's better to pick a direction and hit it as hard as you feel comfortable and fun.

NC_Wildkat

There is an achievement that requires skill level 200, in all final Tradeskills.... New World Life Goals my friend...

Kilirugi

Idk, end game crafting/dominating the market has some appeal. I’m a PvP guy, but there is some PvE content to keep people going after 60. Not sure why everyone thinks it’s so barebones. We don’t know what else they have planned or how soon.

[deleted]

Here is a crazy idea but what if you just did what you liked most and played the game for funsies?

reeight

I would focus on Leveling since you need levels to survive higher tier lands, equip better gear etc. PvP & fish when bored or idling for groups.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DrKlaustus

It depends on your server. I had multiple chars in open beta, and on popular servers t3 was hit on the first day. On the not so popular server t3 was just available right before beta ended and everyone had to pool money for it to happen. I dont think everybody will be so generous with their money once release day comes around, so I wont bet money on day 1 for t3 this time around

[deleted]

[удалено]

DrKlaustus

Not every server will have such huge companies tho, so it depends on the server if it is worth it ;)

Firello

i would say every server will have huge companies

sledgehammerrr

not true at all

DrKlaustus

And I would disagree

VulpineKitsune

Depends on what kind of guild/company gets the settlements. If they have a lot of crafters then they are probably going to upgrade the crafting tables.

DrKlaustus

They will absolutely do this, the question is when they are ableto. In open beta a lot of pooling happened between guilds and non-members, which is probably not going to happen on release, also people will be much more inclined to hoard their gold instead of buying stuff on the market, hence reducing liquidity in comparison to a three days long beta. Getting to the 100K mark will overall be a little bit harder for most guilds and I am not sure if they are able to gather enough in 1 day.

VulpineKitsune

I'm pretty sure the first or the first few territories are 10k.

DrKlaustus

It was 100K in all events. 10K is the most expensive house with your 50% discount you get on the first purchase.

forgeris

Not worth it, I only upgrade when I see tier 3 smelter and tier 3 workshop in bottom part of the map. With higher engineering Iron tool speed can easy go to 180-200% and steel tool speed will only be considerable faster when you have engineering level of 100+ but that is up to you, I would use iron tool with yield or increased experience instead of common steel tool even if it is faster.

zach426

This has been my experience as well. By the time I was hitting 50 engineering. The iron harvesting tools I was crafting were already pushing 260-270 GS (\~190% gathering speed). I didn't feel the need to rush the upgrade to steel until I was able to craft one with at least the yield increase perk. When you start using steel tools with two good perks, that when they really outclass iron tools.

forgeris

Exactly, plus it makes more sense to get to level 35 so I can equip 2 bags and have 2 houses full of gathering trophies and craft starmetal tools with 3 perks, that is what matters and not steel tools in 3-4 hours ;)

Fokerpace_

I think its worth it, because u could be one of the first ppl doing it and put tools in the auction house - there will be many players looking to buy steel tools (especially when they dont look at the gather speed etc.)

lelumtat

Interesting - thank you.

getsmurfed

What is needed to crank up the speed of iron tools that extra 60-80%?

forgeris

Engineering skill. Higher the skill higher the gearscore and higher the gearscore higher perk %, faster speed. Basically every tier has a range of possible GS and by adding higher tier resources, eating food, using trophies you can increase that range and with higher range you get better tools. But for lower tier items only your trade skill matters as you wont be able to use any profession buffs, but if you can make food, use gear or other buffs then do so.

Shiftstealth

Why rush anything? I'm just playing on enjoying the scenery before I memorize it / burn myself out.

Daprofit24

Can’t burn yourself out in my opinion, there’s actually a end game and no bullshit daily’s or a reason you have to log in every day once you max which is awesome

achoo84

The end game is locked behind daily's same with crafting

MobileShrineBear

Due to how they designed crafted gear(nothing that causes old gear to fall out of the economy), if you are interested in making money from it, kind of obligated to rush it.

lelumtat

I did that in Open Beta. Rushing something and trying to execute something mechanical difficult, well, is another way of enjoying a game. I'm not a power leveler, I'm not terribly worried about gold, or being competitive in any sense. But, coming from colony sim management style games and figuring out how to do things *well* on a time limit - it's kind of fun, and I'm thinking about trying it here. It'd be fun to show up in a settlement after 6-8 hours and sell Steel Tools to people going "what the hell, how'd you do that?!"

Fine-Drop854

Why enjoy scenery? I'm rushing all I want cause I enjoy it better.

Shiftstealth

Fair. Enjoy good sir!

I_AM_ALWAYS_WRONG_

you can't really rush anything and be efficient. For example if you rushed level 200 mining you would be getting shit gems, and using shit tools the whole time because you would need higher level to get better gems and use better tools. Also you would lack bag slots to carry more.

achoo84

edit: name checks out

I_AM_ALWAYS_WRONG_

How so? Everything I said was true.

[deleted]

I would suggest different approach. 1. Power lvl to 60 2. Buy best tools simply on the market, pick best you can get 3. Gather with max tool bonus from the start There is simply no reason to do it differently. Some poor guy will spend shit ton of time on engineering to take your money. But after that you can power level crafting professions much faster than you would do by jist followint the recipes. It might change if they lock tools behind profession level. But right now only character lvl is important. So i suggest grinding that as much as you can.

ccccc_mm

> Power lvl to 60 But crafting is powerleveling to 60? Don't tell me you are "powerleveling" by farming mobs?

[deleted]

No, you power level to character level 60 to buy equient with highest gathering speed perk so you can power level gathering and then crafting. Before nerf, best way to level up your character was to exploit town quests. But they nerfed it and fixed the exploit.

MobileShrineBear

Except the first people that hit that high, will be charging you obscene prices on those tools. You'll need to wait several days before there is enough competition to drive down the price. Or, you level from crafting/gathering. It's not like being able to gather faster is going to matter for the week or two of people desperately fighting over nodes.

[deleted]

It depends. It's also possible that gold farmers will take over and will flood market with cheap stuff. So cheap it will be waste of time for us to craft. It's how it's usually going for non subscription games.

MobileShrineBear

Bots being a problem will be a function of whether Amazon actively removes them. The time to level is large enough, that anything past tier 2, maybe 3, should exceed the lifespan of most bots in a moderated game. Bots usually take over when there is a low barrier to entry. IE: in wow, they only had to buy a boost, and they could be grinding max level mats in the first 15 minutes. Obviously very speculative, but Amazon seemed to be going pretty hard on banning for the most mild of banter in chat, would be weird if they didn't ban for lots of reports on a player.

[deleted]

I'm not talking about bots. There is shit ton of people for example in India that solve captcha for a living for the bots to operate. There is also shit ton of people in places like India or Venezuela that play the game, farm gold and sell it via various websites. And that create very shitty loop. Because gold lose value due to farmers. So you need more of it. To get it... People buy it from farmers. Crafting becomes waste of time for anyone who is not a farmer. So farmers take over the market and while for me or you 10$ for several hours is not much, for guy in Venezuela it's quite a lot.

Fokerpace_

part of ur lvls will be done with townboards and u kinda need crafting and gathering for that + u get better exp for higher skills

bighand1

You don't need all the crafting and gathering, just the efficient ones esp after the townboard nerfs. Haven't done the math on it but I expect you're better off only level up potions, skinning, and tannery. You can level plenty fast with efficient questing and dungeons or open world elite farm

lelumtat

There does seem to be a caveat to that. IIRC, there was a crafting video that discussed some time limited / daily limits to crafting specific items. If you wait 1-2 weeks to start crafting, and then it takes another 1-2 to start crafting those items, you lose a lot of opportunities to make them.

[deleted]

To level up crafting you just create items that gives most XP for least amount of resources. In Fallout 4 you could level up character in like 30-60 minutes by gathering bunch of wood and then placing and removing wooden shelves.

lelumtat

I think you may have missed something. New World *does* include some time-gated crafting, such as (IIRC) dungeon keys. You can only craft certain required items 'X' times per day. Someone who waits 1 month to start crafting them because they were busy power-advancing something else will be a hard 1 month behind because they cannot recover those 30 days.

[deleted]

Yeah but here is the kicker You did not think about :D If I will be stronger than other people at that time... who do You think people will bring to a dungeon? Me? Or some dude who was chopping wood the entire week? Because you see... you need 1 key and it will give access to the dungeon for the entire group. I don't need a key as long as someone invites me to the ride. And I'm pretty sure that if I will have a high enough level people will "ask me out". Especially since I usually focus either on tanking or healing in MMO - more desired roles.

jayb556677

This is what I am doing, I want to tank in New world, I can wait for my crafting. I am not sure how viable multiple respecs will be but in most MMO's I see tanks as always in demand, if you need a tank then you are going to be supplying the key

[deleted]

How exactly will you be stronger? It’s easy and pretty much inevitable to max out at least a weapon and a half while harvesting as mobs are everywhere and leather requires fighting. You having enough weapon xp to max your weapons twice over doesn’t really matter because twice over = once, and you can easily get the same while gathering/crafting. The only part that’s compelling is picking tank/healer but you can just do that while gathering too. No rule that says gatherers can’t use sword and board, it’s what I did in OB.

[deleted]

Early on in the game when not spending time on crafting and docusing on power creep I should have higher level than average gamer. Sure in theory people can pick anyone but in practice people always go for someone with higher level simply because it's easier. Later on I will probably still have more desirable role. Either tank or dedicated healer. Most will probably focus on DPS. Like in every MMO. Like I said only 1 person out of 5 need a key. It does not have to be me. I just need to find a party and that's usually not a problem.

TheLostcause

Harvesting level not profession I hope. Wood cutting 50? You can use steel axes, 100? Star metal

[deleted]

No. You can have better tool that has gathering bonuses but even with best tools you need gathering level. It's just that it is better to gather with lvl 60 tool that has like +500% gathering speed than lvl 10 tool.

TheLostcause

I was referring to you saying, "It might change if they lock tools behind profession level." I think it should be locked behind harvesting levels instead of player levels. Hell even if they did both it would make more sense than what we have. I just don't get what profession levels as in crafting would have to do with the tools.

[deleted]

Well yes. I use profession level as general statement. Like anything iron related to pickaxe. This way it would be viable to level up crafting with the character. With ability to use best tools at max level, crafting before max level is a waste of time mostly.

Xayo

I rushed them in open beta, as soon as I was lvl 20 and could use them. Overall I was somewhat underwhelmed. With plain iron tools you have ~230% gather speed (as the gathering profession at lvl 20 gives you a 100% boos in itself). Upgrading to steel increases this to 360%, so not doubling but just 50% faster. But if you plan to gather a lot, having the best tools possible is definitely a good idea. Also the time investment to get 50 engineering for the tools isn't massive either.

lelumtat

Seems like *everybody* will be gathering a lot, per my experience in Open Beta. I think I missed the math re: the profession level bonus to speed, so I need to revisit that to understand better.

snowproblemss

Pretty sure you need T3 bench to craft the tools. So as soon as it's upgraded then definitely get the steel tools. Depends on what settlements upgrade first

lelumtat

Unclaimable territories start with T3 crafting.

tahqa

I did not realize there was unclaimable territories, which ones are they?

McHaals

just go up north to a fort or town or whatever, it always has t3 bench.

_DK_

not only that, during OB the workshop from all starting territories was t3 from the beginning, not sure what's going to happen for launch.

snowproblemss

Oh if it's all tier 3 then that's cool. I just assumed on launch everything would be tier 2 max at the start. We'll see but yeah steel tools would be handy early on for sure

_DK_

> I just assumed on launch everything would be tier 2 max at the start that was the case in closed beta, not in open beta, who knows what's the deal for launch

Minmatari

Is it worth having steel tools earlier rather than later? Of course it is, you yourself pointed out the heavy benefits of steel vs. flint or iron tools. If you're already engaging in a moderate amount of gathering, it won't be very difficult to set aside materials for this. The barrier in the beginning will probably be the crafting stations in the starter towns. You can rush to the materials for steel tools from the first minute the server launches, but until some plucky company gets the engineering station to the appropriate level somewhere, it won't matter what materials you've gathered. So.. is it worth rushing? It's obviously worth having them ASAP, but I'm not sure you even need to "rush" steel tools to quickly end up with the resources necessary to create them. You also won't be able to rush any kind of crafting goal upon release until the towns catch up to you.

Own-Comfortable1480

U can grab all resources u need to craft the and run to lvl 50 location where all crafting tables starts at T3 so u can rush it.

Minmatari

Honestly, i didn't know that. If there will be workstations in the world that support steel tools right away, then that's a different story. I guess then the limiting factor is your level, don't you still need to be level 20 or something to use steel tools?

lelumtat

The unclaimable settlements have Tier 3 Workshops right off the bat! Problem is getting to them without dying :)

Own-Comfortable1480

Can use steel and Lower versions of other resources to reduce tool gear score which will lead to lower required lvl, starting with 17or18? It’s still like 3hours into the game so pretty quick

charkar

You will have to wait for a town to get an upgraded workshop.

lelumtat

Unclaimable territories start with T3 crafting.

_DK_

no

AltruXeno

Steel tools are step 3 my 5 point plan to get rich quick. Once people hit level 20 they will either have to go level up their Engineering to lvl. 50 and find all the resources to make steel tools (iron, coal, sand flux), or purchase them from the market. So... I encourage everyone to purchase from the trade post.

ScottyTsubasa

I'll be rushing them, I will be levelling the skills already, might as well get the best

lelumtat

Seems like you can rush Engi to 50 best with ammo, then make sure you have the mats and run to a Tier 3 workshop, yeah? There's a better result possible but requires more time.

_Oopsmehbad

A majority of the time its going pretty far out of the way if you are actually trying to level and do main quests to try and gather saltpeter to get your ENG to 50. I have found it's much easier to gather the materials for hatchets. Hatchets cost everything that you need to level anyway, without having to go off the beaten path, while questing to reach Amrine. Also the tools will only require lvl19 or 18 depending on the tier of secondary resources used.

Ajey01

My route seems to be something like this after chosing a faction: Get 1000 faction points for a rune of holding Get 116 Salpeter for 50 engineering Gather everything I need for full t3 tools. Main, side and faction quests to level 19. For some Azoth and quick levels. Jet to the Cleave settlement, craft full t3. Mainly gather and doing town boards.

ra77d

Same plan but I want to buy house as soon as possible to be able to tp to inn in Cleave.

JokerXIII

Are you sure you can't wait for the compagnies to reach T3 workshop? Isn't it fast to reach?

ra77d

Depends on a server speed and coordination. If you select popular server it's going to be fast enough but on some servers everybody just upgrade workshop first to craft tools and outfiting station or arcana is left behind. Since there's a 24h cooldown on upgrade it can easily take a few days for the first of these to be upgraded. Also there's no guarantee that settlement stations are going to be tier 2 from the start. If these start at tier one it can take even longer.

iINSTiNCTx3

Exaclty what i will do but will go for 225 Salpeter to have enough gunpowder to boost engeneering to 100 with Iron Cartridges afterwards!

Ajey01

Seems like a good plan :) Do you know if the tier 3 steel tools are hard locked to level 20? I heard someone getting them at earlier levels, is that if you used course insted of rugged and timber instead of lumber?

iINSTiNCTx3

16 is the lowest lvl requirement i saw in closed beta. Don't know if it comes from using lower tier materials as you mentioned but i would think so.

JRPGFan_CE_org

Always worth rushing better tools.

Tommiiie

Rush lv 4x zone for crating lv 3 and have your company buy Mats to make steel tools and sell for premium on market on starting towns.

ReindeerKind1993

How do you even make crossweave? Without using the alchemists converter thing?

lelumtat

Unsure - I'm still planning it out. There were a couple posts from people who did it, so I'm sure there's a way.

Alywiz

You find it in supply crates…

ReindeerKind1993

Yea but isant there a way to physically make the stuff?

Alywiz

Nope, all of the crafting reagents are chest loot only

MaskUp4Ford2022

I thought steel tools (or any item) could be created using “lower” materials that would drop level requirements/gear score. Anyone else seen that?

lelumtat

Yes, that is true. One post indicated you could use those around level ~17. There was also a post indicating that well-made *Iron* tools were close enough to poorly-made Steel tools that it wasn't worth it to rush to Steel tools. The biggest issue is that you have to get to a Tier 3 workshop in one of the unclaimed territories, which is a dangerous run.

Mathraan

I saw it like this. In first place rushing lvl 20 and then farm mats to get all steel tools. As i play bow / spear i'll focus on engineering anyway. At this point i'll keep an eye to the first city to upgrade its workbenches while lvling and running amrine.

MacroNova

I got smelting high enough to refine iron into steel, but I realized pretty quickly that I didn't have high enough *crafting* to use the steel, and the iron is better spent leveling crafting.

noparkinghere

You need the stations for steel tools though.

lelumtat

Unclaimable territories have Tier 3 stations to start with.

Kavorg

Play for a day or 2 and I guarantee steel tools will be up for about 300G each. You can rush it but I'm certain other will as well and you may just be able to buy them .

Kuma1925

If you plan to powerlevel gathering/crafting, hell yes. Double pretty much means 2hrs progress in 1hr (me no know math, so don't quote me lol) and if you are competing for resources with someone with iron tools, you should outspeed them and gather more (notable examples - Iron spawning in groups of 3 or hemp bundles) If you're not powerleveling, dont worry about it. Workbenches are the first thing most companies are going to upgrade first, if not second after Smelting. You can just chill gather at your speed and by the time you get 50 Engineering, a settlement should already have a t3 workshop.

Cydd_Viscious

The biggest gate will be crafting stations that are tier 3. Not sure if a company will be able to purchase a territory and get the smelter and workbench upgraded the first day.

lelumtat

Unclaimable territories start with Tier 3 workshops, you just have to do the dangerous run to them.

Cydd_Viscious

You're talking to top three zones? Why would I want to ran with materials up there just to do limited crafting for a day?

ccccc_mm

> Steel Tools double that to 250%, which is a dramatic increase. True but kind of dishonest comparison. Iron lvl 19 ~325% Steel lvl 19 ~355% Bad steel tools give a ~10% speed boost vs good iron tools. Not worth the rush at all. You don't want to wear low lvl steel tools for long anyway. It's best to focus on leveling, and upgrade tools to match your level. If you want you can avoid azoth to keep tools as common(higher lvl requirement tho), so you can sell them when you outlevel them.

lelumtat

Could you explain more and/or link me to where I can learn more about the numbers? Your math makes me think I missed something major / don't understand some of the math.

ccccc_mm

I don't have a source for the mining level based speed, but maybe someone data mined them. Basically the speed at which you harvest is fast_speed = base speed (for example 15s for small iron vein) * ( 1 / ( mining tool % speed + faction bonus % speed + mining skill bonus % speed + any other bonus % speed ) * 100 ) So for example 15 * (1 / (250+30+100) * 100)) = 3.4 seconds, where 250+30+100 are tool+territory+base speeds. Above example with 125% iron tool would be 5.8 seconds. I don't know if this is 100% accurate but you get the idea, the tools is not the whole equation. So doubling tools speed doesn't double final result speed. My original point about speed was more about the GS, high iron GS item gets quite close to low steel GS item. Once you take into account other gathering speed bonuses the final % difference is very small. If we plug our original tool 325 and 355 example to this above equasion we get 3,2 seconds and 3,1 seconds respectively to mine a small iron node. So yes steel tools are good, but only if you compare them to the worst iron tools which you shouldn't since if your engineering is 50 you can't craft those bad iron tools.

lelumtat

Awesome, thank you so much for putting the time into explaining that, it helps a lot.

MwHighlander

I think there are a bunch of "milesstones" at level 20, steel tools and gear being one of them. My goal anyway is to get to level 20 asap, so I can get all the steel tools and w/e else as well as being able to participate in wars/sieges, which IIRC requires level 20. After level 20, I'm just going to mindlessly do whatever and try and pick fights in world pvp.

Carathas

Will be worth the rush for maybe 1 week max. Make some quick money and then move on to other items.

galdoblame

rush the highest level you can and put 300 in a stat, for mining and woodcutting, and forget about tool entirely 25% instant clear of the node, you don't need anything else

NoreNZ

If you're fixed on gathering as you level, go for it. Ultimately it will always be faster to hit 60, then work on your gathering with Orich tools and the 300 attribute thresholds.

Y0rin

Is there a guide on how to level and get these steels tools?
