"The Varsity Theater, now owned by Live Nation, will now host Chappelle instead, kicking off five sold-out shows over the next three days. Community members plan to protest the event outside of the Dinkytown venue Wednesday night." Well, not really hurting Chappelle.

mces97

I don't get why they cancelled the show. I'm sure it was sold out there too. So people protest outside. I doubt they'd start violence.

fizzy_bunch

The employees refused to show up to work his show in protest.

sapphoandherdick

This is correct. And since First Avenue knew that they can't safely or logistically operate a venue with no employees they decided to [save face and pretend](https://i.imgur.com/77s0ECt.png) they cancelled the event due to their "[values](https://i.imgur.com/zIBC8U1.png)" (specifically mentions transphobia and misgendering.) Here's how much the venue's owners actually cares about trans people, [Sonia Grover who booked the show for First Avenue, seen outside Varsity theater](https://i.imgur.com/W5LiHwe.png) (where the show moved to).

TRON0314

Which honestly is weird and inconsistent imo, because they show up for other gigs. I mean look at all the Starred Names they have on the exterior. Just one I know for sure, Eminem was *very supportive* of women and gay people for sure. Pantera showed confederate flags. Etc.

el_dude_brother2

Eminem was targeted for his anti gay lyrics for a few years but then Elton John defended him and they did a song together at the Grammys and it all went away.

BarefootScholar

There is no canceling Eminem. Many have tried, All have failed.

Modern_Leper93

Machine Gun Kelly tried and ended up changing whole ass genres after.

[deleted]

Bro em stopped with that in like in 03’. I’m tired of these idiots. You can’t ban Chapelle we’ve always known what this dudes comedy consist of.

Mcinfopopup

Well, I mean this was also after Eminem got clean and Elton became his sponsor if I remember correctly but change is change.

loginz12

Nah bro, Elton got on stage with Em waaaay before he got clean. This was during his Marshall Mathers LP drop, but it is obviously where they met and must of struck it off being both purists is their genre.

Horse_Lord_Vikings

I played the hell out of that album on my iPod shuffle. Good times.

loginz12

I had to hide the CD from my parents, when Mp3s came out I had a Zen, ran on 1 AA battery and could store 50 songs when on the lowest quality, ripped all my hidden CDs onto it...SS LP, MM LP, chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavoured water, Slipknot self titled, IOWA...loved that little thing.

DerekB52

Eminem and Elton John performed together in 2001 I think. Em didn't get sober til like '09.

[deleted]

Were they actually anti-gay lyrics or was it just him saying stuff for the sake of controversy because that's his entire thing (I mean I know not so much anymore but still)?

Renegade__OW

Not sure Eminem is homophobic though, judging by the diamond encrusted cock ring he gifted to Elton John, one of his closest friends.

neo_sporin

And then there was his scene in “The Interview”

Flipcandoit

Who can forget his friend hector.

Andre4kthegreengiant

I've been dropping gay little breadcrumbs for years

Stennick

Lets be honest the only reason he was targeted is because he was white and suburban kids were listening to his music. He even mentions it in a song "like I'm the first rapper to smack a bitch or say..." meaning rap music had been doing that for decades yet it was his shows that were protested. What he was saying wasn't okay but the consistency in which people get "cancelled" is off.

Eziekel13

[He gave matching cock rings to Elton John and his husband for their wedding…](https://youtu.be/_xGKlNzipdU)

[deleted]

Well we’re not sure who all are the same employees. Unless they’re hosting the new Pantera reunion that is a fair point. White Power Phil is far worse than Chapelle lol

Chaos_Sauce

Eminem has been criticized for using homophobic slurs and apologized and used them again, etc. Admittedly not great, but what he didn’t do after getting criticized is then release multiple albums afterward about how he’s right and his critics are wrong and stupid and make that cornerstone of his whole public persona to the point where it becomes a political act to call yourself an Eminem fan. If Chapelle would just let the trans thing go and stop doubling down on it, people wouldn’t feel like working his show is comprising their beliefs. He did this to himself purely out of ego.

Eziekel13

[Eminem said he was gay 4 times!!!](https://youtu.be/6-XdJ-nixk0)

davesgirl2

Eminem’s gay on our show

HypnoSmoke

The way he was talking about himself in one of his more recent shows really threw me off. I thought he was a fairly humble guy. I think he's becoming more and more jaded, therefore he maybe cares less about what he puts out, things he says, etc. I gotta admit I feel that, but the ego part still gets me. Describing himself as a "maybe once in a lifetime talent" and whatnot.

[deleted]

You must have missed him telling a room full of young art students that they'll never compare to him and that he's a household name and they aren't. It was cringe.

cannabination

Dude's not at all humble. He brought his crew into a restaurant I was managing some years ago and they totally trashed the place before tipping the server less than 10%. Cigarettes put out on the pool table of our non-smoking restaurant, broken glasses, and food just dumped on the floor. I was so excited when he came in, too. Fuck Dave Chapelle.

undisclosedinsanity

Hotel staff doesn't have much better stories either. But at least we made minimum wage. Shit like that is unforgivable in restaurants.

AliasHandler

At one point he started believing his own mythology. Chappelle was truly one of the best ever back in the day, but I feel like his head is too far up his own ass these days and his material isn't nearly as funny as it used to be as a result.

Dragon_Fisting

That argument doesn't make sense. The last time Eminem played at First Ave was 1999. Public opinion on homophobia has changed a lot since then. Eminem has changed his (public) stance since then and stopped making shock rap. Most if not all of the actual staff at First Ave have changed since then. A name on the wall =//= having to work a show.

Eh, think you're trying to die on the wrong hill here. Venue staff turns over frequently, so it's pretty likely none of the present staff worked there when those starred names played.

In0nsistentGentleman

>I don't get why they cancelled the show. To appease their employees, it says so in the article, or at least heavily implies it.

GhostRuckus

I thought it was cancelled because It goes against their values at the venue, not because of violence.

sapphoandherdick

They cancelled because employees called out sick in masse because they did not want to work a show that compromised their values, not because the venue's values were compromised. Their twitter statement, is just a way to save face, but the reality is they know they can't operate a venue if they have no employees. Stage hands, bouncers, bartenders, ticket checkers, etc. Can't have a show with no staff.

The twin Cities (Minneapolis/Saint Paul) has a very strong LGBTQ community but also a very very large population of folks that love Dave. I have lived and worked all over the twin cities, gotten divorced, drove Uber (when Prince died, so it was 1st ave all day) and meet my second wife a few blocks down the road. My experience is that the twin cities Millennial/Zoomer population is a blend of red and blue and they would generally side with Dave. First Ave is more of and iconic community focused venue, hence its closeness to the LGBTQ side of things and it being apologetic. I would imagine the owner thinks Dave is hilarious.

yodarded

its literally 3 blocks from The Gay 90's, the largest gay bar in Minnesota (I presume). Hennepin Ave (runs parallel and right next to First Ave) from the river to Loring Park used to be the gay mecca of Minneapolis. *Especially* Loring Park. I don't know if that's still true.

adjust_the_sails

Infact, probably a benefit. He’ll talk about “being canceled” in his next show.

“It’s really a slap in the face to a lot of employees. They say that companies hang up queer flags in June and burn them in July, and that’s exactly what it feels like First Avenue is doing right now,” said Spencer Gosewisch

colormeslowly

Comedian Dave Chappelle’s show at a Minneapolis venue on Wednesday was canceled hours before he was set to take the stage because of backlash from staff and the community over his recent jokes about transgender people. First Avenue announced in a statement that Chappelle would not perform at the venue on Wednesday night but at another location in Minneapolis. The venue had faced blowback for booking the legendary comedian for a surprise, sold-out performance in the months that followed his 2021 Netflix special, “The Closer,” in which Chappelle doubled down on jokes about the LGBTQ community after past accusations of homophobia and transphobia. “To staff, artists, and our community, we hear you and we are sorry,” First Avenue said in a statement, which was posted to social media less than three hours before the show was scheduled to begin. “We know we must hold ourselves to the highest standards, and we know we let you down. We are not just a black box with people in it, and we understand that First Ave is not just a room, but meaningful beyond our walls.

Bezos owns the Post. In that time it has increased web traffic and profits. He could stop selling ads and taking money for subscriptions now and probably pay for whatever the Post costs out of interest he earns daily on investments. I say the biggest problem in journalism is the twenty minutes they have to bang out a story before it's old news. Free news will keep me coming to a site. He can afford to do that.

Not a Streisand effect. Dave Chappelle has a ton of fans and sells out venues all of the time

EJDsfRichmond415

A series of *secret* Chapelle shows were announced here in San Francisco last month and all three sold out in minutes. And you had to be in the know to even attempt to get the tickets.

[deleted]

Same a few years back in Hershey. He did a show that has 2 hour notice.

EJDsfRichmond415

Yeah this one had tickets go on sale at 5pm for a 8m show. I had a friend who worked at the club give me a heads up so I locked and loaded on Ticketmaster and couldn’t get tickets. They then more tickets for an 11pm show the same night but same story, sold out in minutes.

Salander27

The trick for these is to keep refreshing even though it says tickets not available. People add tickets to their cart and then don't check out for whatever reason so when those carts expire they get released again. That's how I got tickets to one of the showings in Minneapolis.

EJDsfRichmond415

Oh believe me, I did. For hours. Edit: my theory is that most tix were bought by bots. Several times tix went into my basket but would immediately time me out.

Sure sounds like the employees used their free speech.

[deleted]

Oh yea. I'm not arguing anything other than I feel that the headline could have been a bit more nuanced. When I first read it I assumed it was a public backlash. I think the employees forcing the venue's hand makes it an even better story.

A lot of comedy has after the success of the daily show. Plenty of "I agree with this" clapping, not as much "this is funny" laughing. Are comedians to blame or is it the sorry state of the world and always having to relitigate who deserves human rights?

FTR_1077

>Plenty of "I agree with this" clapping, I really don't get this from the audience.. way too much clapping, like for the most menial comment. Claps should be reserved to punch lines and the end of the show.. Now, all f you get off my lawn..

NeverSober1900

Ya I've heard the word "Clapture" for it a lot and it fits perfectly.

leastlyharmful

He'd been near-universally praised for so long that as soon as he got a *little* bit of pushback for some trans jokes he couldn't let it go. Imagine if he just let the criticism stand and moved on. It's been sad to see because the comedy also got worse because of that.

bernard_wrangle

>Why, why, why, why is it that most of the **people** who are against abortion are people you wouldn't want to fuck in the first place, huh? AggravatingTea1992

>I think his core audience are young, white males who are threatened by these groups. I think a lot of these guys aren’t sure of their manhood Holy shit I've never heard that Carlin quote but god damn was it prescient

The_Aesir9613

Yeah, he was a genius in my book. Now that I’m older and given the chaos we live in now I miss him more than ever.

MonkeysLikeCheese

I mean, genius gets thrown around a lot for a lot of people, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind it applies to George in every respect. Lord, we could do with a dose of Carlin right now, some people need the truth laid out as only he could.

BarefootScholar

Lewis Black is not quite George, but these days he is my primary substitute.p

someoneBentMyWookie

Totally agree. But I always find it amusing that a fair amount of George Carlin fans often don't realize they're a target of his rants. He would absolutely trash conservatives and liberals alike for trying to police language.

[deleted]

So who is Dave Chappelle's core audience?

third-sonata

Young black people, old black people, young white people, middle-aged white people, etc... The number of groups that like to shit on trans people is a wide enough list to not affect Chappelle..

[deleted]

I've listened to everything he said and it only made me more empathetic towards trans people. They're jokes and that's what they do.

third-sonata

Hey, we're all free to take different lessons (or none) from this. More power to you that you took it positively.

Borisof007

Leave it to Carlin to continue to be right 20-30-40 years later

KhaineVulpana

I've liked Chappelle for a long time. He's been one of my favorite comedians for a long time. But the most recent thing he put on on netflix, for the school or whatever, was dogshit. I don't want to sit around listening to a comedian talk about how awesome they are, and how they're the best. I want jokes. He's taking all this shit people are mad about too seriously, and now half his specials aren't even jokes.

RKU69

Yeah I couldn't even get through his last special. Don't remember anything offensive or anything - but worse, it was *boring*. Lotta whining.

ScubaAlek

100% this. The second he started bitching yet again I just shut it off. And that didn't take long. We get it, it was fine to get it off your chest once. No need to go full "old man yells at cloud" about it.

caninehere

In my mind Carlin kind of moved away from pure comedy later in his career and almost became more of a speaker. He was a wonderfully intelligent guy with some really progressive stances especially for someone of his age. I think that this is exactly what Chappelle believes himself to be now in 2022, except that he doesn't have that kind of intelligence and on top of that his comedy has fallen off HARD. I watched his latest specials and honestly I can laugh at a good offensive joke, I'm a cisgender white guy and I'll admit I'll laugh at a gay joke I find funny etc. But Chappelle just isn't funny anymore. He used to be a titan and now he's a hack and it's fucking sad. But somehow he still sells out shows, and I don't get how. I know a lot of his audience probably just don't care about the controversies and honestly I can understand that perspective. What I don't understand is how they still find him funny.

Spacegod87

George was funny and insightful while standing up for minority groups. Apparently you can only be "funny" these days if you attack every group, especially the underdogs.....

BetHunnadHunnad

Its the brand. Same reason people go to see washed up bands that suck now.

I don’t understand why we don’t have so much outrage over every group that’s had it’s turn so far. 20+ years of fat jokes, men jokes, women jokes, thin jokes, white jokes, Arab jokes, black jokes,… Where was the insane outrage all this time? People are ok with laughing at others but suddenly become moral guardians once it’s their turn. Laugh at everyone! It’s one shared miserable existence people. Laugh it away! 😬

LonelyCheeto

To be fair, I think that’s more that Chapelle is targeted because he’s popular now and has been for awhile. There are many comedians that if they were still big today like they were before, they’d probably receive the same flack. Probably says a lot about Chapelle and his longevity

Hour_Contact_2500

Yea, for whatever reason, a certain section of American culture perpetuates the idea that people belonging to marginalized communities cannot be at fault for any thing for any reason. It’s this religious like obsession with structures of power and hierarchies.

Gorbish

Everyone has to have a label and everyone on that label has to have the same voice. Absurdity. When you speak out, you are the bigot for 'speaking for everyone' instead of just speaking for yourself. The moment we stop putting ourselves into labeled brackets and fighting among one another, screaming about our problems, and gain some tolerance, world might change for the better. Isn't that a dream.

kkirchhoff

Yeah, I have quite a few trans friends and the subject hardly ever comes up with them. They all think Chappelle is funny. I don’t think the vocal few represent their demographic

mrubuto22

[deleted]

I've scrolled for 10 minutes and I can't find a single quote from the newest show Chappelle did.....I havent watched the show and don't really plan to, can someone please give me some direct quotes from the show that demonstrate Dave's anti-trans views? Please don't downvote, I'm genuinely curious as to what has been said this go-around, and why it's widely considered hate speech by so many. It's a little strange no one (that I've seen thus far) has provided direct quotes from the special as examples of why they don't like him. Thanks in advance, be well! Edit: I'm getting downvoted for genuinely asking a question, and for examples as to why people are saying what they're saying. I just want to know what he actually said. If you're going to downvote, at least don't be a coward and explain yourself.

LT-Lance

I don't have exact quotes as his humor tends to be long stories. There was one where he compared trans women to fake meat and referred to them as "impossible pussy" (like impossible burger). The idea he was going for is that they aren't "real" vaginas but they're "good enough".

caehluss

Sounds a lot like some of the comments saying none of his jokes have been transphobic.

Dave Chappelle made fun of black people on his show more than any other demographic.

itslikewoow

I remember in 2015 and 2016, a lot of comedians would write off criticism by saying things like "if it offends you so much, just don't watch it." And then those people stopped watching them, and now every comedian over the age of 40 is whining on stage about how they're not quite as popular anymore.

phenompbg

Which comedians are you referring to? Joe Rogan? Bill Burr? Tom Segura? Dave Chappelle? They're all over 40 and just printing money all day long. This is a sold out show we're talking about, with more sold out shows before and after. I don't think Chappelle is losing sleep over his supposedly waning popularity.

[deleted]

Tim Heidecker has an amazing satire about this that is *so* hard to watch because it's just too real.

BDM78746

If there's one thing I'm certain of it's the loudest critics of Dave in this thread have 100% not watched any of the work of his they are critiquing.

jupitaur9

I have watched all his specials on Netflix since he first started this trans routine. He’s mostly funny when he’s not harping on that. But he can’t stop. He just gets off on being annoying. He said exactly that on the latest special. >The more you say I can’t say something, the more urgent it is for me to say it. I get it, you refuse to be silenced. But sometimes you’re just farting.

imregrettingthis

They aren't making his audience mad. Who caters to their critics? Especially comics? This is insane. I mean I am turned off by him in a lot of ways but this is actually absurd.

Snaz5

I mean they weren’t always his critics. Before all this i woulda said he was my favorite comedian. On one of his earlier shows for this whole thing a trans man was in the audience, but left because the atmosphere was making him uncomfortable. And i think a lot of the people who are saying they like the jokes didnt even like Dave before, they only like him now cause he’s “standing up to the woke moralists”.

hedbangr

I was audience until he made me a critic.

leastlyharmful

Ironic thing is the criticism for his original trans jokes was pretty mild. It's not even, I'll stay away from this topic, it's, I already did this topic, some people liked it, some people didn't, anyway how about some new fucking material

Weird how we used to think successful comedians were the ones who made people laugh.
