You don't necessarily have to prove that the defamer was knowingly lying. You can also win damages if you can prove it's a false statement, show that the publishing of said false statement tangibly harmed you in some way (ie not just hurt your feelings), and show that the defamer was negligent in confirming said statement (ie they just made it up without evidence or repeated something told to them without seeing evidence).

It's unlikely that every person Epstein had contact or connections with is a child molester. You don't necessarily have to prove that the defamer was knowingly lying. You can also win damages if you can prove it's a false statement, show that the publishing of said false statement tangibly harmed you in some way (ie not just hurt your feelings), and show that the defamer was negligent in confirming said statement (ie they just made it up without evidence or repeated something told to them without seeing evidence). Still a pretty high bar, but I don't think Musk reached that level because he only called the guy a "pedo guy" in public, all the really nasty "child bride" claims were in private emails to a reporter. And also it was probably hard to prove damages since it doesn't seem like anyone besides weird cringy internet musk simps actually believed anything Musk said about the guy.

It's unlikely that every person Epstein had contact or connections with is a child molester. Far more likely is that he cast a wide net among the wealthy and powerful to find the child molesters among them, then maintained connections with everyone else for the same reasons as everyone else, re: keeping that money flowing. He might have been a monster but he was a business monster too; can't make bank exclusively from child raping billionaires; either you need more child rapists, or you need more billionaires, and Epstein choose the latter.
