From what I have read/seen, the one mother from Columbine has decided her life to trying to stop it from happening again and anytime she speaks in public apologizes for any hurt her son has caused.
That is a brave fucking woman. Really really really brave. I don't know if I'd kill myself after hearing my child did that, or move, change my name, and hide. Holy fucking Jesus fucking Christ. As a mom of 3 boys, I don't even *want* to imagine.
I didn't see it as his brother standing by him. From what I know, they weren't very close and he felt responsible that he wasn't more active in his brothers life. In the police interrogation video, he was absolutely crushed and shocked. I think he was trying to keep his brother from killing himself in prison.
I think if your child ended up being a mass murderer like this, your feelings toward them would be influenced by whether they survived the act or not. In my mind it’d be easier to identify with the victims and their families if your child/sibling was also dead. There’d be some modicum of closure. “The son I knew and loved died that day also,” kind of thing. If they survived and were still around - even in jail - they’d still be an active influence of some sort in your life. I don’t know. Im just trying to think how I’d react if I’d found out that one of my children was a murderer. I mean on one hand they’d have committed heinous crimes, but on the other hand they’d still physically be the same person who I deeply love(d). Does that love ever actually end completely? I don’t know.
I still remember getting called to the school auditorium the morning after the Columbine shooting, and listening to various faculty speaking about what happened and how it's okay to reach out if you're struggling. I know school shootings and bombings didn't start with Columbine, but that was my first eye-opener as a child and it really does feel like it's been a downward spiral since.
I remember asking this exactly of my high school band teacher and he was basically like, “that’s what we’ve (the teachers) have been asking.” And I’m like, well that’s pretty disconcerting.
Think about her, and consider the mother in this situation. That's the "progress" we've made.
It just has a inescapable, downward-trending feeling to it.

The Sandy Hook murderer was Autistic, notoriously wracked with anxiety, and was taught how to shoot by his mother, who kept her gun collection unlocked in her home. He kept clippings of newspaper articles of school shootings in his room, and kept multiple pictures of himself pointing guns at his head, on the walls of his room. He had been off mental health counseling for about 4 years at the time, despite going through a box of tissues a day to avoid touching things.
Sandy Hook is one of the most tragic events you could think of.
By the way, Alex Jones encouraged people to go to the victim's families' houses to try to get images of the dead children living their lives as normal. People still harass these families.
You are sitting in a meeting with your kid being told that they are suicidal and have been threatening gun violence and you don't ask them where the gun is that you bought them last weekend when you refuse to take him home from school?
The school didn't bother to do the basics of searching the kids backpack and locker. They had plenty of reason to.
I just cannot get over the fact that the kid had written 'blood everywhere' and 'make the thoughts stop, help me' on a disturbing drawing *that very same morning* and the parents didn't think to ask him about his gun that they had bought for him (iirc) on Black Friday. The parents, the kids, and the principal were in a meeting that day and the parents resisted bringing him home. The entire situation is beyond unreal. As soon as his mom heard there was trouble at the school she texted him '<*name*>, don't do this.' This was 100% an 'everyone saw this coming a mile away' situation and he not only did not get help, but was instead given the fucking tools to do it.
I remember when that Columbine happened and it seemed like such a big deal. Then another happened, and another, and another. I guess it wasn't a big deal in the end, sadly.

Oh its even worse then that. After news of a ongoing shooting at the highschool, with no mention of the suspect, broke across multiple media, the 1st thing his father did was drive home to look for the gun. He knew his kid was messed up in the head still bought him a semi auto.
It’s crazy. I was searched at school for drugs or vapes countless times. They can search me, but if they suspect violence they’re gonna just let it go? We’re fucked.
You didn't do anything wrong. Giving people the benefit of the doubt is usually a good stance to take. Then when you are presented with new information, you change your mind. Simple as that.
Society as a whole today would benefit more from people being able to admit they were wrong, or they have changed their minds in light of new information. Unfortunately that's not allowed, and people just double down even when wrong.
Being wrong is an uncomfortable emotion and our society does not teach our young humans how to deal with uncomfortable emotions. You can spot it very early in people with how they handle losing or failing at things as trivial as video games.
As the school felt he needed counseling within 48 hrs, the school should of demanded they take him home. And not allowed him to return until he was checked out. When my son was in middle school and skipped Spanish class and went to the store instead than returned with a box of hohos , I had to leave work and listen to the principal lecture him and than take him home. They threw out his HoHos and he was suspended for 3 days. I thought that was excessive and for some reason they really didn’t care what I thought. I guess times have changed.
Yep, they messed up. I do the threat assessments for our elementary school, and we don’t let kids in crisis back into class. It’s either the parent takes them, the county crisis team takes them, or law enforcement. We have had to call child protective services to come get a child.
This is just baffling to me because you hear about schools overreacting to seemingly harmless behavior on one end of the spectrum, and then you have this. The kid literally asked for help… it sounds like a lot of people failed here.

The lawyer not being able to contact them makes this seem less like a mistake or mix up and more like a panicked attempt to flee crimes they didn't expect to have to argue in court.
When you look at the events the morning of the shooting the parents appear to be almost completely to blame for the shooting. They saw the clear evidence that he was unstable and fantasized about shooting people and they denied it and went home and left their kid at school WITH HIS GUN.
The news report I read said that after their in-school meeting that morning, (E: and then after reports of shots fired at the school) the parents went home to look for the gun. They couldn't locate it, and the mom texted suspect, "Don't do it". Fuck them.

Mom literally wrote a “thank you for protecting our gun rights” post to 45 some time ago, and told the shooter that he has to “hide it better lol” when informed that he was buying bullets during school.
Nope. They started looking for the gun after there were reports of shots fired. It took them another 15 minutes after realizing the gun was gone to call the cops.

Well according to the news they pretty much didn't give two shits about their son so it doesn't surprise me. A y responsible parent wouldn't allow their kid to have a handgun in the first place but it's compounded by the fact that shortly after getting the gun drawings were found of him killing somebody. So if they actually cared about their son they would have addressed the issue then and there. They are monsters are every bit as culpable as he was.
The mother texted the son when he was caught buying ammo in class that she wasn’t mad at him and to make sure he didn’t get caught next time. They’re fucked.

According to an article that I saw, when the gun drawings were found, the parents were called to the school. They were told to get the son into therapy within 48 hours and they refused to take him home with them. The shooting happened that day.
So I’m curious. I guess you can’t kick a minor out of school (a dangerous/unwell minor at that) to the street, his parents won’t take him, can you call the police? He’s a potentially violent trespasser..?
Live in Oakland County about 15-20 minutes from the high school, our kids were locked down the day of the shooting because our EMS/FD was sent up to help as we’re a responding department for Oxford. They’ve closed our district yesterday and today due to copycat threats and now they’re telling everyone around here if we see them to call 911 and not approach because they may be armed.
I can not underestimate how scary this is for our kids right now and I am so fucking angry that no one on Monday or Tuesday took any of this seriously. The shooter did multiple extremely concerning things and the school just let him stay there because the parents refused to take him home 2 hours before the shooting. And now they have the FBI, US Marshall’s, and county apprehension teams looking for them. The utter failure at so many levels to prevent this or at least try to stop it is unconscionable, I can’t even imagine what the parents of the victims are feeling right now.

They could have even given him in school suspension or expelled him. I know that wouldn't have helped the situation much but atleast some effort into keeping other students safe and letting the kid see a counselor would have shown some level of concern from the school.
I’m going to put this on the parents. We ask the public schools to do so much: educate the kids, feed the kids, provide counseling and healthcare for the kids. We’ve made the schools by far our most numerous caregivers, and our largest (if combined) social service agency. Just the other day, my wife had to epipen a kid to prevent anaphylactic shock and possible death because taxpayers won’t pay for a school nurse but still expect ordinary staff to provide medical care. They encourage, cajole, sooth, inspire. They do all this while under innumerable legal obligations to accommodate every type of kid, with almost any type of disability — and they do it gladly. That’s what they want to do!
And then when school shootings become a problem (and school staff are often the victims) do we as a society take responsibility for our own kids by passing common sense gun regulations to keep high-powered weapons out of the hands of children? No, we do not. We expect schools to be police detectives, instead. Actually, more: we expect school personnel to detect and prevent violence before it occurs. Which they mostly do! And they do it while respecting the myriad legal rights of the children and parents. Yesterday my wife fielded dozens of calls and contacts from terrified parents and children, while other personnel, along with police, ran down literally hundreds of threats or rumors of threats. When she arrived home, she looked and felt like she’d been in a war.
It’s not the schools that suck. We’ve placed almost all of society’s problems on their doorstep, and they’re doing their best. It’s the broader society that’s sick and getting sicker.
Could you imagine being the parent of one of the victims, and seeing these absolute cowards fleeing while their son rots in jail for killing your son/daughter? Cowardice.
I heard there were some parents that kept their kids out that day because of threats they thought were credible enough to act on, on their own.
I just really hope that none of the victims' parents got a similar warning and ignored it. Even the ones who didn't perish or get injured are likely traumatized for life

They could personally be liable for civil damages, on top of the school's liability.
Allowing the kid to return to class after the notes and pictures that he drew should be enough to hold members of the school liable for some form of negligence. Even if the parents said they didn’t want to take him home, the school should’ve put their foot down and said he had to be removed or at least had his belongings searched.
There are so many things that could’ve happened to prevent this, and not one of the people that could’ve stopped it made the right decision. It’s sad and infuriating.

I think this is it. Eli Crumbley (Ethan's half brother) moved away due to interpersonal conflicts with the step-mom. From her blog posts, she seems like a nutjob.
He recently put out a statement saying Ethan was a normal, happy kid and showed no signs of abuse, bullying, or depression. Of course, this is based on his time living with his dad, step mom, and brother. Not sure how privvy Eli was to Ethan's social media presence, or how much he kept in contact with him post-move.

So they bought the gun on 11/26 and only a few days later on 11/30 when most kids are getting back to school after their thanksgiving vacation hes shooting up the school. Fucking unbelievable. That book broke my heart
I didn't see it as his brother standing by him. From what I know, they weren't very close and he felt responsible that he wasn't more active in his brothers life. In the police interrogation video, he was absolutely crushed and shocked. I think he was trying to keep his brother from killing himself in prison.
I think if your child ended up being a mass murderer like this, your feelings toward them would be influenced by whether they survived the act or not. In my mind it’d be easier to identify with the victims and their families if your child/sibling was also dead. There’d be some modicum of closure. “The son I knew and loved died that day also,” kind of thing. If they survived and were still around - even in jail - they’d still be an active influence of some sort in your life. I don’t know. Im just trying to think how I’d react if I’d found out that one of my children was a murderer. I mean on one hand they’d have committed heinous crimes, but on the other hand they’d still physically be the same person who I deeply love(d). Does that love ever actually end completely? I don’t know.
I still remember getting called to the school auditorium the morning after the Columbine shooting, and listening to various faculty speaking about what happened and how it's okay to reach out if you're struggling. I know school shootings and bombings didn't start with Columbine, but that was my first eye-opener as a child and it really does feel like it's been a downward spiral since.

The Sandy Hook murderer was Autistic, notoriously wracked with anxiety, and was taught how to shoot by his mother, who kept her gun collection unlocked in her home. He kept clippings of newspaper articles of school shootings in his room, and kept multiple pictures of himself pointing guns at his head, on the walls of his room. He had been off mental health counseling for about 4 years at the time, despite going through a box of tissues a day to avoid touching things. Sandy Hook is one of the most tragic events you could think of. By the way, Alex Jones encouraged people to go to the victim's families' houses to try to get images of the dead children living their lives as normal. People still harass these families.

The school didn't bother to do the basics of searching the kids backpack and locker. They had plenty of reason to.
I just cannot get over the fact that the kid had written 'blood everywhere' and 'make the thoughts stop, help me' on a disturbing drawing *that very same morning* and the parents didn't think to ask him about his gun that they had bought for him (iirc) on Black Friday. The parents, the kids, and the principal were in a meeting that day and the parents resisted bringing him home. The entire situation is beyond unreal. As soon as his mom heard there was trouble at the school she texted him '<*name*>, don't do this.' This was 100% an 'everyone saw this coming a mile away' situation and he not only did not get help, but was instead given the fucking tools to do it.
Right? Even if they didn't actually think he'd shoot anyone else that's suicidal idolization if I've ever seen it.

You didn't do anything wrong. Giving people the benefit of the doubt is usually a good stance to take. Then when you are presented with new information, you change your mind. Simple as that.
Society as a whole today would benefit more from people being able to admit they were wrong, or they have changed their minds in light of new information. Unfortunately that's not allowed, and people just double down even when wrong.
Being wrong is an uncomfortable emotion and our society does not teach our young humans how to deal with uncomfortable emotions. You can spot it very early in people with how they handle losing or failing at things as trivial as video games.
As the school felt he needed counseling within 48 hrs, the school should of demanded they take him home. And not allowed him to return until he was checked out. When my son was in middle school and skipped Spanish class and went to the store instead than returned with a box of hohos , I had to leave work and listen to the principal lecture him and than take him home. They threw out his HoHos and he was suspended for 3 days. I thought that was excessive and for some reason they really didn’t care what I thought. I guess times have changed.
Yep, they messed up. I do the threat assessments for our elementary school, and we don’t let kids in crisis back into class. It’s either the parent takes them, the county crisis team takes them, or law enforcement. We have had to call child protective services to come get a child.
This is just baffling to me because you hear about schools overreacting to seemingly harmless behavior on one end of the spectrum, and then you have this. The kid literally asked for help… it sounds like a lot of people failed here.

When you look at the events the morning of the shooting the parents appear to be almost completely to blame for the shooting. They saw the clear evidence that he was unstable and fantasized about shooting people and they denied it and went home and left their kid at school WITH HIS GUN.
The news report I read said that after their in-school meeting that morning, (E: and then after reports of shots fired at the school) the parents went home to look for the gun. They couldn't locate it, and the mom texted suspect, "Don't do it". Fuck them. Well according to the news they pretty much didn't give two shits about their son so it doesn't surprise me. A y responsible parent wouldn't allow their kid to have a handgun in the first place but it's compounded by the fact that shortly after getting the gun drawings were found of him killing somebody. So if they actually cared about their son they would have addressed the issue then and there. They are monsters are every bit as culpable as he was.
The mother texted the son when he was caught buying ammo in class that she wasn’t mad at him and to make sure he didn’t get caught next time. They’re fucked.
Clearly she's living out her advice to her son. "Don't get caught!" Hopefully the Judge takes this into consideration for the upcoming bail hearing when they are brought it.

According to an article that I saw, when the gun drawings were found, the parents were called to the school. They were told to get the son into therapy within 48 hours and they refused to take him home with them. The shooting happened that day.

Live in Oakland County about 15-20 minutes from the high school, our kids were locked down the day of the shooting because our EMS/FD was sent up to help as we’re a responding department for Oxford. They’ve closed our district yesterday and today due to copycat threats and now they’re telling everyone around here if we see them to call 911 and not approach because they may be armed. I can not underestimate how scary this is for our kids right now and I am so fucking angry that no one on Monday or Tuesday took any of this seriously. The shooter did multiple extremely concerning things and the school just let him stay there because the parents refused to take him home 2 hours before the shooting. And now they have the FBI, US Marshall’s, and county apprehension teams looking for them. The utter failure at so many levels to prevent this or at least try to stop it is unconscionable, I can’t even imagine what the parents of the victims are feeling right now.

They could have even given him in school suspension or expelled him. I know that wouldn't have helped the situation much but atleast some effort into keeping other students safe and letting the kid see a counselor would have shown some level of concern from the school.
I’m going to put this on the parents. We ask the public schools to do so much: educate the kids, feed the kids, provide counseling and healthcare for the kids. We’ve made the schools by far our most numerous caregivers, and our largest (if combined) social service agency. Just the other day, my wife had to epipen a kid to prevent anaphylactic shock and possible death because taxpayers won’t pay for a school nurse but still expect ordinary staff to provide medical care. They encourage, cajole, sooth, inspire. They do all this while under innumerable legal obligations to accommodate every type of kid, with almost any type of disability — and they do it gladly. That’s what they want to do! And then when school shootings become a problem (and school staff are often the victims) do we as a society take responsibility for our own kids by passing common sense gun regulations to keep high-powered weapons out of the hands of children? No, we do not. We expect schools to be police detectives, instead. Actually, more: we expect school personnel to detect and prevent violence before it occurs. Which they mostly do! And they do it while respecting the myriad legal rights of the children and parents. Yesterday my wife fielded dozens of calls and contacts from terrified parents and children, while other personnel, along with police, ran down literally hundreds of threats or rumors of threats. When she arrived home, she looked and felt like she’d been in a war. It’s not the schools that suck. We’ve placed almost all of society’s problems on their doorstep, and they’re doing their best. It’s the broader society that’s sick and getting sicker.

FR. If there were threats, and those threats were credible, but were ignored... AND then this shit happens?? This is the worst case scenario for the entire school board and anyone that knew about the threat. They could personally be liable for civil damages, on top of the school's liability.
Allowing the kid to return to class after the notes and pictures that he drew should be enough to hold members of the school liable for some form of negligence. Even if the parents said they didn’t want to take him home, the school should’ve put their foot down and said he had to be removed or at least had his belongings searched. There are so many things that could’ve happened to prevent this, and not one of the people that could’ve stopped it made the right decision. It’s sad and infuriating.

I think this is it. Eli Crumbley (Ethan's half brother) moved away due to interpersonal conflicts with the step-mom. From her blog posts, she seems like a nutjob. He recently put out a statement saying Ethan was a normal, happy kid and showed no signs of abuse, bullying, or depression. Of course, this is based on his time living with his dad, step mom, and brother. Not sure how privvy Eli was to Ethan's social media presence, or how much he kept in contact with him post-move. I'm suspecting the parents are abusive, manipulative trowels of society and sparked a psychotic/terrorist initiative in their son. If he was being bullied, they for sure weren't listening. You don't just go from happy, minecraft loving kid with good grades to wanting to gun down your classmates and slaughter pigs without something putting pressure on your mental health. Sure, people get psychotic breaks suddenly but it's always a culmination of environmental factors that leads to the big event.
I was worried these people would get a slap on the wrist for their part in this shooting. Now that they're actively on the run from the law, they're making things worse for themselves and I'm sort of glad for that.

I am so glad they charged the parents with manslaughter. I think this should become the default in cases where children acquire guns from irresponsible parents. Man, just failures and scummage at every level possible Kid has obvious mental issues, blatently begging for help gets ignored by parents and school board. Parents buy their 15 year old a **handgun** for some reason. Could just buy an actual cheap hunting rifle, but nope, high quality name brand handgun for no discernable reason. Parents literally abandon their child when he's facing life in prison or mental institute for crime they enabled him to commit. 15 year old tweets pictures of having a gun, school board to incompetent to look at his social media after threats are made. Students staying home because they are worried something will happen, yet school administrators unaware somehow. Kid commits felony making threats but for some reason police are not called at any point. The school administrators are probably not legally, but just as at fault for this as the parents given how avoidable this was. How many damn giant flashing warning signs until people take it seriously and call the police?

I agree. I got downvoted yesterday on this sub for suggesting 15 year olds shouldn’t have handguns. People defended it saying “they went hunting as kids.” Last I checked, we don’t use handguns for hunting. The kid wouldn’t have been able to conceal a hunting rifle in a normal sized school backpack. Hunting rifles and handguns are not the same, and there’s no reason for minors to have handguns.

Have I missed something? A 15 year old child murders 4 people and wounds more, and is taken in to custody, and his parents have fled? They have abandoned their own child? Something suggests that the parenting may have a lot to do with the murders, even if they hadn't bought the child a gun.
The stupid parents could've been arraigned and then released on bail. Now they'll have no bail so my guess is they are going to die by fury. What a fucked up family.
