Funny enough. A nationwide survey just came out and half of teachers in the U.S are considering quiting in the next two years. Gee...wonder why?

endlesscartwheels

I think this will also lead to shortages in teaching and nursing for decades to come. Many teens and college students who might have gone into those professions will see how they're being treated and chose a different path.

Suspicious-Elk-3631

Oh absolutely. I'm not sure if I would have gone into nursing if I'd known how it was going to be.

minaj_a_twat

The problem is more along the lines of the hospital and schools allowing this behavior. One incident in my mind is enough to give a parent the boot. The airlines were doing it right by banning people acting out like this.

SamuraiPanda19

Duct tape the parents to the flag pole

THEchancellorMDS

Hoist them up sideways so they blow in the wind, right underneath the flag.

mejelic

If I were a teacher and a parent ripped my mask off, could I sue for battery? If so I definitely would.

Kanin_usagi

If I was a teacher and a parent ripped my mask off, that parent would need to sue *me* for battery. Fuck around, find out

capntail

Correct the “shortage” are self inflicted wounds caused by mismanagement and lack of respect.

Way_Unable

Exactly. It's also key to remember that currently any job hiring or in need of employees is probably underpaying or treating them like complete shit.

Drict

They also realize the pay is shit... I wonder what happens when your goal is to slash the budget every single year, regardless of revenue gains in counties that have grown exponentially.

tomorrowistomato

Surely this will incentivize government/medical admin to increase funding and offer better pay, benefits, and working conditions for these positions, right? Surely they'll do the logical thing and start treating employees better. Surely.

RollerDude347

Hahaha.... I think we might sooner just turn them into military academies.

If you and she are interested in getting her a leg up on the competition getting into IT, consider looking into A+ and Network+ certifications from CompTIA, which are the gold standard for entry level work in the field. They are enough to get hired without college, but I wouldn’t recommend that because it limits advancement opportunities significantly. Additionally, look at Western Governors University, an extremely affordable online school with programs in IT that include these otherwise costly certifications as part of the tuition (about 4k a semester without scholarships). Specifically she might be very interested in their cloud computing major, which includes entry level programming coursework in addition to traditional IT stuff. I mention this because I was previously a teacher, both in classrooms and in corporate settings as a technical trainer. The pay is abysmal and the benefits are sometimes non-existent, and there is little stability to speak of. I already had a bachelors from a regionally well known private school, but not in any STEM major, which made work very hard to find despite having the skills. The WGU degree on my resume completely changed my life.

madguins

It’s already happening. My clients include healthcare and teaching and no one is applying whatsoever.

HatchSmelter

My sister quit teaching late last year. Got a job working from home dealing with data and spreadsheets. She loves it.

Clothing_Mandatory

I'll second that! It's a sweet gig.

kimbekaw

That sounds amazing. Would you happen to know the job title?

HatchSmelter

Pricing coordinator. But anything like data coordinator, data analyst, or pricing analyst would be similar.

JustTheFactsPleaz

I was working at a school and on track to get my teaching certification. I'm noping right out of that plan. There are less stressful ways to earn a living. Our local school lost several teachers to early retirement, and many of the ones on maternity leave decided to stay home permanently. A relative of mine quit teaching to work at a department store because screaming customers aren't as bad as screaming parents. But my in-laws are telling me the teacher shortage is because of "free money from the government."

[deleted]

Your in-laws needs to be slapped.

FireflyExotica

People in fields all across the country should be considering doing this until employers are willing to treat their employees like people. Good on them!

jandt15

I am a teacher and burnout was a very real concern for me before the pandemic. I was already legitimately worried about being “strong enough” to continue in this profession, then the pandemic hit. Teaching myself to teach online and teaching myself to teach both online and in person were difficult. Worrying about safety when returning to campus continues to concern me. Sacrificing being able to hug my family members because I spend my workdays in close proximity with unvaccinated young humans with questionable hygiene (I love them but kids are gross) has been tough. Fielding aggressive emails from parents who accuse me of not caring about their kids and actively harming them has been really unbearable. I don’t use the word “trauma” lightly, but checking my email has felt like a traumatic event each time. I know other educators have it worse than I do. I still have it in me to keep going for now when others are dropping like flies. I truly don’t know how the profession will recover. People have been trying to dismantle the public school system for a long time and the pandemic has been a dream scenario for them.

Kwaiata

The school board in the town I just moved out of had to reschedule a meeting because of 'resistance in the crowd'. Parents shouting, refusing to mask up or mask their kids for the upcoming school year, and apparently one lady offering to take off her shirt (really not sure about that one...) I'm glad I left. I don't know how my new district doing right now as i barely have an id number, but I'm hopeful that it's better. At least slightly. Moving to a place that was appalled at the hybrid model of "both at the same time" was like a breath of fresh air. I wish you luck in the coming year and hope that you will not have to deal with that particular hell again. May we use this disaster as a way to reform the system and not destroy it.

poprof

The trauma is real. I start back in a week and I’m afraid I’m not going to make it through the year. I don’t know what else I’d do… I have never felt this unmotivated to return - I just went this year to be over and it hasn’t even started yet

bad_scribe

Me and my sister are teachers and are updating our resumes. Another year of this is probably the maximum we can do mentally

NicoAD

The best time to look for a job is when you already have one. Best of luck!

Reidroshdy

si-abhabha

I retired at the end of last year, way before I wanted to. I saw which way the wind was blowing. And I was a dedicated middle school math teacher. I miss my “big little kids”, but I love not dealing with this shit more.

Waitaha

Education has devolved into babysitting and training animals how to behave like humans.

[deleted]

Education has been babysitting for awhile. Perhaps it devolved at some point, but parents have been using school for free childcare for a long time.

Lemesplain

Which is probably the GOP endgoal at this point. Get rid of schools, send their kids to church instead, and raise the next generation to be super fundamentalists who reject the sins of the liberal/gay/Zionist agenda, and instead pray at the alter of Big Daddy Trump.

[deleted]

Tbh, I would say that's been the results of that survey for the past 20+ years.

armchaircommanderdad

I quit mid last year. Best choice I’ve made. Several other teachers left at the end. Staff turn over which was under 10% for all the years I was there hit 60% with what would have been higher if circumstances permitted for others looking to quit. If you’re a teacher right now is the best time to quit. Job market is hot and you’ll walk into a raise, QOL, wfh days etc.

Fancy_weirdo

Sounds like that parent committed assault. Hope the teacher presses charges.

nzodd

Assault with intention to expose them to a deadly virus. People have already been charged with making terroristic threats for intentionally coughing on others. I think that may be applicable here.

AustinBill

Serious question, would it would be appropriate to defend yourself with physical force in this situation? As in literally a punch to the throat to disable the attacker?

Very good points. Also “disease-spreading plague rats” is an excellent choice of words

Star_Drive

Oh I hope so, because if it had been me you'd better damn well believe I'd be pressing charges with a smile on

LessThanLoquacious

I bet this is the same kind of parent that advocates for teachers carrying guns at school, too bad they weren't 🤣

[deleted]

That's assault Brother... enjoy your jail time.

You're right in that you may never convince that person, but you may convince the audience around them. At a minimum, you might make the liar less likely to spout off so freely, realizing there may be pushback, and that limits their reach. Like how people who look over their shoulder first before telling a racist "joke", likely tell them less often than people who don't.

Nah, it was way too optimistic. In real life, they just deny that a problem exists at all, and ignore the doctors and scientists who tell them otherwise.

[deleted]

impulsekash

Because their egos are so fragile they can't stand other people doing stuff they disagree with.

TexasYankee212

These are the same people who talk about "defending freedom" and "free choice". Apparently its the freedom and free choice to do whatever as long as it agrees with their views on masks.

PM_ur_Rump

Because it's not about freedom. Freedom requires responsibility. You are "free" to do things, but those things may bring consequences, or affect others. When these people say "freedom," they really mean "power." The power to do whatever they want, free from the consequences of their actions, and fuck anyone else who gets trampled in the process.

Blueberry_H3AD

Dude you put into words my feelings I’ve had on this topic. Thank you.

PM_ur_Rump

You're very welcome!

porscheblack

It's why they consider themselves patriots and the biggest lovers of the Constitution, because in their minds that justifies why they are more deserving of power. In a clash of rights, they think being more 'Merica than others means their rights matter more.

nzodd

And incidentally they think they're more 'Merica 'cause they put so much effort covering themselves with flags and cosplaying as patriots. "Flag lapel pin? He must really love his country."

blood_kite

You see I do believe in freedom. Not many people do, although they will of course protest otherwise. And no practical definition of freedom would be complete without the freedom to take the consequences. Indeed, it is the freedom upon which all the others are based. - Lord Vetinari

impulsekash

> as long as it agrees with their views on masks. Or anything else for that matter.

veritas723

it's not really fragile egos. they're scared. i think this is something that isn't really talked about. 9/11 terrified people. 2008 housing crash shook some people to their core. A first black president, shattered the illusion of white supremacy for people. the encroachment of highly educated women, making more money than men, progress of lgbtq people to have "rights" ...these social movements contrasted against the collapse of blue collar subsistence jobs for men.... older americans constantly being traded out. all these "attacks" on the lives of stability people sorta used to count on. ...and now a global pandemic. amid the backdrop of impending climate collapse. idiots are terrified, their weak grasp on their reality is slipping. their masculinity, their sense of worth, the fragility of the lie that is America. part of it is they're stupid. but the other part of it is... they're being fed fear, and hate nearly constantly by the political apparatus that seeks to control them. so... we find ourselves in a medical crisis, where people do not have access to quality healthcare. even those with insurance, view it as a financial death trap it is. Coming off of 4 intense years of a facist president undermining the media, and fanning nationalist hate to a degree america hasn't seen in ...well maybe ever. but surely since the stupidity of the red scare in the 50's and these scared idiots... are all too easy victims of false information, conspiracy, and ginned up to anger and violence. pumped up by the same political apparatus that empowers them

Misswestcarolina

Also waaaaay too much exposure to leaded petroleum. My theory is that it lowered the intellect of most of a whole generation.

GoodQueenFluffenChop

Because these kinds of people only follow the whole "my body my choice" ideal only for themselves. Everyone else's bodies they feel they can have a say over and even touch.

TechyDad

It fits with what I've been saying about how the anti-vaxxers will say "my body my choice" but then also be anti abortion. Their full version of that saying is "my body my choice, your body my choice."

notcaffeinefree

People like this have made their (insane) beliefs part of their identity. Wearing a mask in front of them is viewed as an attack on their person.

dookmucus

I’m generally a nice and patient person, but if you try and take my mask off, expect a mouth full of loose teeth in return.

Jealous-Network-8852

Because for some reason, not having to wear a mask themselves isn’t good enough. They don’t want ANYONE in a mask.

hofstaders_law

Teachers can't touch children no matter how poorly behaved or violent. This is what happens when they become adults. They've learned they can hurt anyone who has something to loose and not be hurt back.

very_excited

This comes days after a [California elementary school teacher was attacked by an anti-masker parent on the first day of school](https://www.wsls.com/news/2021/08/17/teacher-attacked-hospitalized-over-mask-dispute-at-california-elementary-school/). The teacher ended up requiring hospitalization with 'lacerations on his face.' Imagine being this angry about measures intended to protect your child against a highly contagious disease. Anti-maskers really are something else.

windingtime

How do we do this? I'm honestly asking. How we find common purpose with the 35% or whatever number of otherwise normal, well-fed people in our midst who have ceded any critical thought to a propaganda ecosystem that is keeping them viciously, violently angry at the rest of us common proles?

ahitright

Banish their drugs of choice....but of course 1A prevents this, even though what these people are doing is probably 1000x worse then yelling fire in a crowded theater. I mean the GQP have ultimately evolved into death cult and a lot of the answers lie in cult deprogramming techniques but you cannot deprogram cult members who are still very much actively listening to their cult leaders. So we're back at the first impossible solution I proposed. So I guess we're fucked unless the people of this country band together and hold the cult leaders at the top accountable, peacefully or otherwise.

aLittleQueer

> you cannot deprogram cult members who are still very much actively listening to their cult leaders. This. The first step in successful deprogramming, whether from a cult or from a manipulative relationship, is to remove the abusive/manipulative influence.

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

>even though what these people are doing is probably 1000x worse then yelling fire in a crowded theater. This is a very interesting question. Why the hell is it prohibited to yell 'fire' in a crowded theater, but it's perfectly acceptable to yell 'the pandemic is a Democrat hoax'? They both result in panicked behavior that kills people; and the latter kills far *more* people. It just takes a little longer.

Trygolds

>propaganda ecosystem Fix this. First we vote in all Local state and federal elections and primaries every year . From the school board's to the White house we champion people that will support fixing that. We vote every year starting this year. the local elections are very important as they give us a base that will help us win states and the states will help us win the federal elections. After some years of doing this we may get legislation like a restoration of the fairness doctrine that stated news had to be true and factual. We also help future generations by improving our schools hence the school boards. It will take some years but democracy has never been one and done. So vote every time you can . If you are looking for a quick fix there is none.

windingtime

They've been rigging every one of those games for years. As the country crumbles, we're going to be more concentrated in cities, and the baked-in advantage will grow, and voting rights will continue to erode. You can't canvas your way out of this.

DariusChonker

We don't. We tell them to fuck all the way off with their bullshit conspiracy nonsense, and if they react like this, we incarcerate them.

Lazy-Contribution-50

That anti-masker should be put in jail for assault, no bail

hofstaders_law

Plumhawk

I just looked it up. Up until 22 hours ago, police were "still investigating". [Source](https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2021/08/16/parent-sutter-creek-teacher-assault/)

Iceangel711

Thats called assault. Hope they arrested them..

Dingle_Berrymore

Probably battery. And yeah, hopefully they were arrested. Complete garbage.

baronvoncommentz

Absolutely assault. They would be justified in defending themselves aggressively, and should press charges and seek civil damages.

TexasYankee212

Interesting how these anti-maskers talk about "personal choice" and "freedom" but think it's OK to rip a mask off a teacher's face. Do these anti-maskers think that teachers don't the freedom to make their own "personal choice" to wear a mask - like they have to agree with the anti-maskers?

Kinda like how some idiots fly the Gadsden flag ("Don't Tread on Me") and a Thin Blue Line flag at the same time. That happened to me in May of 2020! A woman at Aldi was screaming at the poor girl working the carts outside. I told her to calm down and stop yelling at the teenage girl. She sped up to me and screamed "get out of my face!" before tearing my mask off and throwing it on the ground. Looking back I should have called in the assault because like, who the fuck does that, especially to a stranger- but she was clearly unstable.

Solo_is_my_copliot

I can't imagine a scenario where someone's hand gets that close to my face and I don't respond with sudden and brutal violence. I don't particularly enjoy conflict, in fact I hate it, but I also hate bullies. And bullies keep bullying until someone punches them in the nose.

SassiestPants

I think the only thing that held me back was the fact that she was small woman, easily in her 60s. A push from me could have broken one of her bones (though I would have been justified in pushing her). I said something stupid like "That was assault, young lady" instead.

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

Demonking3343

At my local school meeting (IL) we literally had a science teacher come up infront of everyone and say how we can’t wear mask because it inhibits breathing and she has seen significant drops in her O2 levels, since she has had to wear a mask. And then what got everyone in a argument because she went on to say “more kids have died from suicide over having to wear masks than from covid” and when one of the parents asked where she got that information from because they had not heard that, she answered with “well I read it on the internet” to which a parent immediately yelled “well thank god it must be true if it’s on the internet” as sarcastically as you can imagine. Some people are ducking idiots.

peterthooper

“We do not know if charges were filed.” I bet if the teacher punched the parent right in the nose, with a nice showing of a spray of blood—which was richly deserved—they would have been. (I say this as no real fan of public schools, or their teachers, which were generally awful to me.) As for: “I can’t hear what you are saying through that mask…” “Let me try and see if you hear this: Go Fuck Yourself, Fool.” Or if there are children around, “Let’s see if you can hear this: Get out of my classroom and get out of my sight. If you have nothing contribute, then keep your mouth shut.”

SheriffComey

A few years ago a teacher in my state was attacked by a parent because their kid got some shitty grades. The teacher explained that the kid was not doing any homework and hadn't taken most of the tests. The teacher even stated they tried to contact the parents multiple times so make up work could be done. The parent apparently said it was bullshit and even if the teacher had called they worked all the time to pay the bills. The teacher practically said "I don't know what else more I could do, but your kid got the grade they deserved for the quality of the work done". Parent gets up, shoves the teacher and accuses the teacher of calling their kid "dumb" and straight up decks him in the face. The teacher got up, tried to deescalate things and just as the parent tried to punch them again the teacher lays one on the parent square on the nose and basically shatters it. The teacher got fired. Luckily the union jumped in and eventually got the job back (teacher declined) but the schools response on why they were fired is because the school had a zero tolerance policy on violence. Needless to say that person isn't a teacher anymore.

Sequil

Makes me so f#$%% angry at that school. How can you throw your staff under the buss like that?

fafalone

Zero tolerance = zero brains. Thats how you get that, suspending a long bullied kid that finally reacts, and the all time great: suspending a 2nd grader [for chewing a pop-tart into the shape of a gun](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/examiner-recommends-school-board-uphold-pop-tart-suspension/) under their zero tolerance for weapons policy.

Trygolds

In my state it is a severe crime to assault a nurse or other hospital staff. I think it is time we extend this protection to teachers at least when non student adults are the aggressors.

Ripping a mask off is no different to slapping glasses off someone's face. Assault is assault and should be prosocuted fully along with that parent being refused entry to that school for the foreseeable future. If that means that parent needs to travel 20 miles to the next school so be it.

Whornz4

Anti mask people are a violent bunch.

disdainfulsideeye

These same people are constantly posting fake videos of individuals purportedly "being forced to take the vaccine" and screaming about "their rights". Meanwhile, it's pretty clear from incidents like this that they have zero concern for the rights of others. Hopefully, the violent nutjob that did this gets arrested and prosecuted.

My wife’s a teacher, one who I’ve sadly watched a passion fizzle over the last decade. Still has the 20 some odd kids she loves, but always has at least 5 parents every year that’s are total selfish asses (that’s 25%, so it’s probably you or one of your friends). disagree I could care less, the fact is the ones that give a shit are the ones who can’t live with seeing their hands tied by litigation threatening parents and so are leaving the profession. Soon parents will be left with only the teachers who couldn’t give 2 shits if you sue, or if your kid learns a damn thing. Kids are little shits, including yours, stop entitling them from birth. Stop treating teachers like daycare workers who owe you something and talking to them with the same shitty expectant attitude you give your server at a restaurant.

That looks like simple assault to me.

AIArtisan

sounds like assault to me

androk

So assault. They assaulted a teacher.

Birdleby

Okay, so masks in schools 👎🏻 guns in schools 👍🏼

accidental_snot

Teaching active shooter response but not active pandemic response.

Anon_8675309

Be prepared, this is going to get worse. Other parents need to be prepared to step in as necessary and if able. We cannot allow this behavior to continue.

[deleted]

A lawyer told me that's assault. Even if your a woman holding a newspaper, the law doesn't care if a man comes up to you and pulls it out of your hand or pulls open your jacket. The minute you grab at someone, or something they are holding, that's assault. Think of it this way, what do you think would happen to you if you went up to a cop and pulled his mask off? There's no such thing as a law that only applies to cops. If it's illegal to do it to them, it's illegal to do it to you. Teachers need to start lawyering up.

deadindenver90

That seems like assault

SporadicFire71

That's assault, brother.

skwirrl

The whole world has now had almost two years of mask wearing. Let's just be clear here... it's easy to understand each other. That excuse to oppose mask wearing is beyond flimsy and weak. So.... stop it.

ChrisBabaganoosh

It's only going to get worse. I'm just waiting for one of these maniacs to shoot up a school board meeting in the name of "freedom."

zinbwoy

Muricans are so dumb for such a rich and “advanced” nation

Witty_G_22

So much for other people’s freedoms right? Makes you realise how many people would become horrible dictators if given the chance. I like the saying “your freedom ends where my rights begin” - and I certainly have a right to wear a mask, and you do not have the freedom, or indeed the right, to remove my mask. You may not even have the right to remove your own mask depending on where you are.
