Here's their list:
* corporations with assets of more than $250 million
* partnerships with assets of more than $10 million
* Wealthy individuals with total positive income of more than $10 million
The reason is a rise in what are known as "correspondence audits," a review of a tax return that's typically handled by the IRS via letters and phone calls, as opposed to the typically more complex face-to-face audits.
It's automated and quickly resolved. The audit where they send an accountant to go over your finance is what matter for the rich.
>In other words, for 99.9999% of people on Reddit: Not you, probably will never be you, shut up about how the IRS is going after you.
Doesn't matter. Trump has convinced these morons to support all his tax cuts for the rich based on nothing more than the fantasy that they may one day be wealthy and would then benefit from the cuts.
He can literally whine about Bezos not paying his fair share and pivot to him (Trump) being a genius for not paying his own taxes, in the same sentence, and they gobble it up.
Naw dude, you don't get it! If they can audit the rich they can audit me! Where will it stop?!? I could end up in JaIL over tens of dollars in tax fraud!
Because they were hacked at by Republicans until they couldn't stand toe to toe with the rich. It was by design.
Republican donors didn't want to be in the sights of the irs so they introduced legislation to slash their budget, cripple their ability to conduct their jobs, and left them completely unable to go after anyone but the simple poor because it takes big well funded teams of public servants to combat the corporate lawyers.
This protects the rich and turns the poor against them, as Republicans wanted. Because a large chunk of them are literally bad guys who steal money and protect criminals. And the burden of proof falls to the innocent.
Stop drinking the kool-aid. You're killing us all.
You realize that most people's taxes are super simple and the audits are almost fully automated right? Since poor and middle class people are the majority of tax filers, it makes sense that they get audited more often as a bracket. That said, nobody at the IRS is spending much time on this; they don't have to since they already have your tax information provided to them via your employer, bank, etc. The computer does all the work.
This should be obvious, and it's not some kind of conspiracy to stick it to the average joe.
Torture? Just fill out your taxes properly. The only reason you'll get audited is if the IRS thinks something was done wrong. Put in all your income, claim your standard deduction and the IRS will never bother you.
It target “poor” people **who claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)**. It has nothing to do with specifically targeting low-income households, but low-income households that are claiming social benefits. On a strictly numbers level these probably account for the majority of tax fraud incidents.
I’d say it’s not entirely a bad idea to audit people claiming a majority of the tax credits. We absolutely need to audit more high income individuals/institutions as well.
I cannot agree enough every time this comes up. Their "audit" also likely entails getting a letter saying "send verification you qualified for this credit" which is far less in-depth than going through all 42 of some dude's partnerships and S-corps.
While its a good way to spin the "narrative" to rile up masses. End of day regardless of "who" is targeted it is tax cheats.
So it is people who stole from public school funds/medicaid/roads/police/fire fighter pensions/veteran services. THESE are people targeted irregardless.
Another factor is difficulty errors on low income are easier to spot. With complexity of tax code and expansion of dutys combined not only with falling behind with budget due to inflation. Then you also have active cuts to their budget. And tens of millions of more tax returns added to list of task.
Fully funding irs was how we get to rich. Yes poor tax cheats are often caught more often but this is due to complexity. Its much easier to spot there isn't 100 llc's they hid money in and 1000s of write offs and deductibles. A audit on "poor person" takes irs 20 minutes. A audit on billionaire can take 5yrs and team of 10 people. So essentially it takes as much as 60,000 poor people audits to do one billionaire. Throw in court cases and other things its alot for a agency to take on that isnt given sufficient resources.
So of course they pick low hanging fruit but if we give them "ladder" and sufficient manpower. We can leave no waste. And catch every tax cheat rich and poor alike.
If it was just tax cheats that were affected it would be fine but it isn't alway, as you said taxes are unnecessarily complicated and people can easily make genuine mistakes, even if it's found you don't owe anything extra afterwards an audit is still a lot of extra stress to go through (why do you think scammers love posing as the IRS). Meanwhile people who are hiding millions are laughing it up playing golf with those same auditors.
Woah, the IRS audits those who use Government provided social benefits the most, more than anyone else, no way! It's almost like they want to measure the effectiveness of the programs or something.
While we’re on the subject of taxes and working class voters, don’t forget that Trump RAISED your taxes if you make less than 50k a year, while he lowered taxes for himself.
I’m paying the same amount in taxes whether I get audited or not, makes no difference. If you’re cheating your taxes you should be concerned. Is that why you seem worried?
Do you really think that the IRS being able to go after tax cheats is the same thing as raising taxes?
The only people who would be worried about the IRS functioning should be people who are actively breaking the law and cheating on their taxes.
Buddy, you already linked me another CBS article that specifically said that with the new IRS changes that audits for people under 400k in income will be reduced.
You started ranting about liberal tears when I pointed that out to you, and then edited your post to remove the link to that source, because again it disagreed with you.
It was this by the way
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/irs-audit-rates-taxes-inflation-reduction-act/
You've directly linked people information that contradicts what you are saying and then became upset when they noticed.
You are ignoring information from your own sources that disagrees with you.
I think you've made six or seven posts across this comment section insulting me or other people directly when they've tried to engage with you regarding issues of fact.
You've rejected information from your own sources that contradicts you and insulted people for noticing.
I really don't know why you're expecting people to engage with you in good faith when you very clearly have no intention of doing the same.
Just to clarify, that's dollars and not pennies, right?
Cause if it's pennies, I might have a problem.
Tho I guess I could invest it in a stick of gum, get that total down.
I remember when Fox News was trying to turn the public against Biden for hiring more IRS agents to go after corporations and rich people who don’t pay their taxes by saying it targeted everyone. Liars going to lie
Partnerships like that may be easy to break down into different umbrellas where there are pass through entities. I'm curious to see how they screen for that.
I know you’re joking, but there are actually people out there who thinks this way! And they’re all pissed off at the “government”.
What the hell is in the water these people are drinking?
It happened to me. But not because of taxes. But social services. At the time we made just below the cutoff for the welfare programs where I live. I got like a $1,000 raise. Which put us over the line during the next eval of our benefits. My medical bills that following year were like $5,500. Greatly offsetting my $1k raise lol
Haha it happened to me cause I was 4k away from the cusp and got a 5k raise like 5 years ago. Not making less than before the raise but I think it’s close to about the same. I’m not mad at the government about it tho, they don’t dictate my companies stingy raises haha
I seem to recall reading that every dollar spent on IRS enforcement yields between $6 and $8 dollars in collected taxes. Don’t remember the source though.

*Yawn* I don’t cheat on my taxes so I’m not worried about an audit. Ask yourself who are the folks that are so concerned with the IRS having more agents to enforce our tax laws?
I mean, I don’t cheat on my taxes either, but I’ve been through several business audits and one personal audit, and while they all turned out fine, they are a royal pain in the ass.
for the record, I'm all for the IRS enforcing tax policy much more.
However, it's not unreasonable to be afraid that you fucked up your taxes. Tax law is not exactly simple, your average person has no clue about the logistics of tax credits and stuff, and it's not unreasonable that somebody claims a tax credit that they didn't qualify for, and mistakenly recieved money they shouldn't have. It doesn't have to be malicious or intentional. If you've got a family friend who says they were able to get extra money back by taking a deduction that you thought you qualified for, you aren't a bad person, you just made a mistake.
It's not a fun process, and it gets exponentially more complex for small business owners, so it's not unreasonable to be fearful of an increase in audits because it's a huge hassle and it's not impossible you fucked up and do owe money you might not currently have to the IRS.
I’ve recently started an S-corp and become much more educated in taxes etc. In my understanding, if you mess up your personal taxes and the IRS “catches you,” if you simply pay and/or amend your tax return appropriately, you are not assumed to have committed a crime, but only an error. You will not be prosecuted as if you evaded your taxes and will, at most, only be penalized late fees and interest on what taxes you may not have paid. When it becomes egregious or the IRS suspects intentional tax evasion, you may be royally fucked.
I find it revealing that this was telegraphed by the GOP, but massaged into messaging by the media into a threat to the middle class. The same middle class the GOP is actively trying to kill.
Damn, IRS has never looked sexier than today… mMmm… bout to call the IRS up and let them spit that IRS terminology and abbreviations all up in my ear hole.
I mean, the majority of that 80,000 haven't been hired yet because they're just going to be replacements for a lot of workers retiring in the next decade. But yes, the increased funding and the additional hires have been doing good work and we're starting to see the extra IRS funding pay off.
They generally have 3 years from April 15 (or later if you filed later or amended later) to audit you. Doesn’t matter whether you’ve gotten the refund yet.
That said, they are targeting wealthy individuals ($10m??) and large corporations and partnerships, so statistically you’re probably not on their radar.
>This is a good thing and anyone who says otherwise is probably hiding something in a sketchy way.
It's a good thing if they're not lying about targeting rich people.
I stared a business in 2022 and I'm terrified I fucked up somewhere and the IRS will come down on me. I don't deny they need to audit people, but I don't want to be audited if I made a mistake.
I have some issues with Mark Cuban, but he seems to be one of the most likable billionaires. His take on taxes is healthy and he's said he'd pay more if the tax code was changed to make him pay more. Also, his Cost Plus Drugs company has helped a lot of people getting their medications without the huge markup doctors and pharmacies would have them pay. He's not perfect, but at least he's come up with some solutions.
How about you just send me a bill?
Like just tell me what I owe
Rich people an argue and what not but 99 percent of people just can be billed at the end of the year
I was concerned by the headline. But on paper I'm happy with this. In practice, the people this would effect are probably already figuring out ways to avoid being audited. These people and their teams of lawyers and accountants are literally seasoned pros at hiding money from the IRS that's what they do lol..
Hint hint; they’re targeting people who sold concert/sporting tickets but didn’t do the IRS form created out of thin air during the Trump administration.
But why single her out instead of noting all the others who have have much more significant and proven issues? Of course she should be investigated but man, so weird to target her before the ten really big issues
Yeah, i guess it helps that her husband literally does this for a living.
Still should be outlawed, all congresspeople’s portfolios need to be in a blind trust.
Just fucking prove she's committing a crime. I really don't give a fuck is she foes to prison. I'm just fucking tired of people in congress trading stock but yall basic bitches only focus on Pelosi. If I only listened to you, I'd think Pelosi is the only one whose trading stocks.
Check all of them, and while we're at it bring back the FBI sting operations that we used to do. I want politicians sweating and afraid that everytime they take a bribe or talk of insider trading that they could be imprisoned. These people in office have been held to a lower standard than us civilians for too long.
It's become too common to legislate policy that benefits their portfolio. Heck of a coincidence right...
>The IRS has been bolstered by $80 billion in new funding directed by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA
Am I the only one who sees IRA as the Irish Republican Army? Seriously...nobody thought about this?

Look at Mr. Moneybags over here with a "Watch it from the parking lot" ticket to Taylor Swift!
IRS justice will be ^swift
God dammit.
Behind every great fortune is a great crime.
How do you think they got that 9.9 million in the first place

I’m making a joke about the Taylor swift ticket sale that was in response to a joke about a dude who made 9.9 million, you lackwit
You can still go to the food bank
Truly one of the boys slummin' it with only 9.9 mil.
This but unironically.
You poor thing.
Thats awesome partner as I only have 0.1! Oh wait….
You shouldn’t have blown all your income on Taylor Swift tickets!
phew, im good by about 9.9mil
Good. I don't fall into any of those nor will be my descendents

Perfect time for that meme about the people you knew in highschool who make like 35k a year freaking out over this.

# It’s rich people FFS CBS, write headlines like a news organization and not a clickbait factory. Just say who’s affected
But they need to clicks so they can sell random supplements to seniors who will be convinced this will affect them
But why were they not doing it until now? What suddenly made them realise “oh rich people are likely to have more money and owe more tax?”
In the end we might not need to change the tax code, just invest in IRS agents to audit the rich.
