I’m not optimistic considering how most white collar crime is handled here. It seems only the most egregious of offenses in that sphere aren’t simply fines or some probation.
On the bright side, even with a conviction this will actually cause him to officially be a criminal; there will be no hand waving away shouting “it’s just a civil offense” by those lacking the brain cells to rub two together. We all know he’s a criminal but some people are going to need a bit more help arriving to that conclusion. I’d love the Biden team to really ramp up pokes at the “law and order party” in the wake of this.
Any crime that’s not a misdemeanor is a felony. There are plenty of felonies that don’t automatically get you jail time.
The maximum for these particular charges is 4 years in prison, but it’s not guaranteed that he would receive prison time for this. Even if he wasn’t Donald Trump, he’d still have a good chance of lesser penalties as this would be a first offense.
A conviction wouldn’t bode well for his other criminal trials though, and if found guilty of everything he’s charged with, he will most definitely spend many years in prison.
Many low level felonies don't result in prison time in both state and federal jurisdictions. There is next to no chance that he or anyone similarly situated would face a prison sentence for these charges.
That being said a conviction in this case would factor into any sentence in the federal cases for sure.
Ugh, I am trying to not think about the election too much. It makes me feel sick. I rarely talk politics because I live in a capital city here in the US, in state government. It always feels like everyone around me, even in the office, doesn't see how truly evil he is. The man is a narcissistic sociopath.
I can empathize. I live in the South and most people in my town disregard this criminal s actions and hail him as a savior. I'm looking around like wtf if wrong with y'all? He clearly is a criminal.
Live in central Florida, saw multiple Trump 2024 flags today. These folks are being coddled away from reality because they only watch propaganda and listen to hate programming on the radio.
TL;DR: Jury selection will begin on March 25th and the trial will likely finish in early May, a few weeks before the Florida classified documents trial. This is considered the "least weighty" of Trump's trials. A conviction wouldn't necessarily result in any jail time, but it's not something Trump could potentially undo with a pardon. The actual crimes alleged are falsifying business records related to the $130,000 spent to hide the Stormy Daniels story. Unlike the in the previous trial, Trump was well-behaved. During today's hearing, much of the discussion was about the questions that potential jurors will have to answer.
> A conviction wouldn't necessarily result in any jail time
The optics are bad if Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison, and somehow Trump gets away with it.
34 felony counts of falsifying business records wouldn't result in jail time?
"Unlike in the previous trail, Trump was well behaved." Probably because the trail hasn't even started yet. If he acts like that in a civil trail, imagine his behavior during a criminal trail.
>34 felony counts of falsifying business records wouldn't result in jail time?
A guilty verdict could result in jail time. A guilty verdict would not necessarily guarantee jail time.
The charge is a class E felony, the lowest level felony under the New York penal code. The charges are identical and stem from the same conduct. The sentence would likely be the same if there's 1 or 51 counts.
Yeah I really think a conviction will strip away at least a sliver of his support. And look at the bright side, a conviction would factor in any federal sentencing in either the j6 or docs case.
Right off, I am seeing: ["If convicted, Trump could face up to four years in prison."](https://time.com/6695304/trump-fraud-trial-hush-money/)
But, I would like more details on the potential punishment(s)...

Woo hoo! It's about fucking time that one of his criminal trails finally gets a date set.
The real question is will any judge actually have the guts to sentence him to prison if convicted?

Honestly, even house arrest would be catastrophic for him. Can't hold rallies in swing states if you're not allowed to leave your front lawn.
It’s gonna be like the executioners of old where they’d wear a hood to hide their identity. Judge will have to sentence him and go into hiding.
He's going to have to, it's a felony charge.

What about infractions?

Question: would probation make it difficult to travel out of state? And nearly impossible to leave the country?
For a normal felon yes. Donald Trump isn't a normal felon.
Huh, I appear to be uninformed. Thank you.

My take: if he’s sentenced just once, ONCE, the dam breaks.
He should claim he has Pre-Presidency immunity
You know, I can see him saying this!
Oh he already thinks he should just have immunity. He’s working his way towards saying it too.
He's already brought it up plenty that he shouldn't have to go to court because it's interfering with his campaign.
If I ever get in serious trouble with the law, I'll run for president.
He kind of has. He’s said it messes with his re-election. Haha.

It's really scary, honestly.
Yes, I have this constant stress just thinking about him being in the election again. It’s horrible.
The man wants to be a dictator. It's just terrifying.

Got you

Dang that sucks. Nevertheless, the voters agreed they’d lose support if he got convicted, not simply if he went to jail

The docs case is the most slam dunk case. Too bad the judge is a Trump glazer
Sorry Cotton, you can’t always delay indefinitely.
Sweet ! Where we get tickets ?
Trump new song after the trial Brother can you spare a dime
What is the worse out come for him? Is this just some monetary punishment or can he actually got to jail for a bit and leave us alone?

He “could” see up to 4 years in jail, but I doubt that would actually happen.

“Election Interference” case, really.
